My five year old daughter loves to play with my computer. I try to keep her on the machine set up with kids’ games and links preset to sites that are Mom-approved. But often she’ll look over my shoulder and ask to feed the fish on my iGoogle home page.  The other day she told me she didn’t like the picture that I use on Twitter. Today, though, she did approve of another avatar that I’m using for this blog, VoiceThread, and other sites. I showed her a few others I had made – for a friend, for my husband – and fairly quickly she identified each person. When she asked if we could make one for her, I thought it would be fun, not to mention interesting to see how a 5 year old imagines herself.

Avatars are a good way for students to create an image of themselves without sharing personal photos.  The avatar maker that I like is called FaceYourManga. It allows you to change specific features and, even with somewhat limited options, seems to get the key elements that make a person identifiable to family and friends. The one critique I had for this avatar maker was that the bodies were really designed for adults and I was very clear that I would not create an image of my daughter that had the figure of an adult woman. It is somewhat hard to avoid, but I think we did o.k.

Em outros tempos só os nobres e pessoas importante tinham seus retratos pintados. Hoje, nós mesmos podemos criar nossos retratos ultra-tecnológicos, inspirados na estética mangá.

I think my friends are all too busy to blog. I, on the other hand, seem to have ran out of things to blog about – nothing seems interesting/important enough.

However, Emmanuel did say that as a friend, he’d read whatever I write, even if it’s mundane everyday life ongoings. He also said that I put too many pictures/videos and write much too little. So here’re some random happening!

I read an article recently that says Google’s making us stupid – nobody does deep reading anymore and “deep reading… is indistinguishable from deep thinking.” I can’t help but agree. As I read the article, I find myself scanning for keywords too quickly for a proper read. On top of twhat, Google gives everyone the same access to information so it doesn’t make me more intelligent than you. When was the last time you relied on google instead of your knowledge?

The article had me hitting the books (yes, those dusty pages binded by a crumpled spine). I’m reading My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult and it tells the story of a 13 year old girl who’s sueing her parents for the right to her body when they decide on a kidney transplant to save her older sister. The gripping story is told through multiple characters – the protaganist, her parents, her attorney and her dying sister. From my Google search (agh!), it’s slated to be released as a movie in 2009.

The latest version of itunes is getting on my nerves because it’s functions are closely linked to the itunes store and credit card information is needed to start a proper account. I’m skeptical for hidden charges billed to me. I thought technology was to keep up with us but recently, the tables seem to have turned.

This is not a brand new site, but I keep seeing theese illustrations all over the web, in IMs, blogs, forums, twitter, everywhere. It is the latest craze, it is Faceyourmanga. It is a nice little web ap that lets you make a “mangaish” illustration of yourself. Remeber the simpsonizeme.com? well its pretty much the same, just not simpson style illustrations. Theese things are fun, but have the life expectancy of a toddler in the shark pool.

Et ben c’est pas trop tot. Apres une interminable absence, FaceYourManga.com est enfin de retour en ligne avec peut être des serveurs à la hauteur. L’accès est 10 fois plus rapide mais est-ce du à la fin du gigantesque buzz ou bien est-ce une montée en puissance? On notera d’ailleurs l’absence de communication de leur part: pas une explication sur cette absence, pas un mot, pas un bisou, rien…
