I går, på banen. Snart fremme. Huffda. Uhell skjer. Det er vel dette man kaller karma.

FoL #16: Things for which we are thankful.

Our Faith: It’s not so much our faith that we are thankful for, rather it is our God where we have placed our faith. His Grace is so big and his mercy so tender. Without Him there would be no joy.

Our Family: We’re really thankful for our family this year as we are away from them. They have been good to us though and Skype with us whenever they can. We’ll miss each and every one of you.

Our Marriage: Being married is good. We’re so glad we have one another so we can share our experiences and grow together.

Our Friends: We’re thankful for friends on both sides of the Pacific. Our friends in the USA have been very supportive and encouraging. Our new friends in Japan have been fantastic to us and have helped us get more out of our time here.

Our Adventures: Our time here has been a true gift. We’re closer than we’ve ever been, we get to experience a new way of life, and see another piece of the world.

Our Health & Safety: We’re always thankful for good health. Even though H1N1 is big here we have both been fortunate enough to escape it.

Our Blog & Readers: This blog has been a great way for us to stay connected to family and friends. On top of that it helps us to process and remember everything going on here. We attribute our lack of culture shock in part to the blog. Thanks for reading our many posts!

This show isn’t what I would call marathon-worthy, (NOT insanely addictive to the point where you could literally watch an entire season in a 48 hour period with glazed over eyeballs) but it does have some merits. Despite formulaic plots and mediocre acting, I do love this show in small doses. Let’s face it, teen girls today have to be close to anorexic to merit an appearance on any adolescent-centric show. All four of the female leads on this show had normal, healthy looking bodies, gaps in their teeth, and even braces (Tootie!). It sort of reminds you of how much standards have changed for a woman’s appearance, the same way Joan does on Mad Men.

Four Musketeers is episode 16 from Season 3. The girls are forced to contemplate whether or not they want to continue to live together. I’m sure you can guess how this one ends…

Folks, as I was surfing the internet, I came across this story which I thought worthwhile to post it on my blog for you to share and appreciate the moral of the story.

Here it goes…

A farmer and his son wanted to sell their donkey in the market.
So, they walked to the market, pulling the donkey along with them.

They passed by a field and met another farmer who called out to them, “What’s wrong with the both of you? Why are you walking when you have a donkey that you can ride on?”

The farmer looked at his son and told him to ride on the donkey.
The son obliged.

A while later, they met a lady who was on the way back from the market herself.
“Shame on you, young man,” she said. “How can you let your father walk all the way to the market while you are riding on the donkey? Get down this instance and let your father ride the donkey”.

The son, red-faced, got down from the donkey and told his father to ride it instead.

Not too long later, they met a couple of farmers who were working on their fields.
“Look at that,” one of the farmers said to the other. “The father is having a good time riding the donkey, while his son has to suffer the heat and walk.”

The farmer and his son were dumbfounded.
Finally, they decided that they would both ride on the donkey.

The donkey, struggled to walk as the combined weight of the farmer and his son was just too much for him to bear. As it was trying it’s best to put one step after another, another farmer walked pass.

“What are the both of you doing? Are you crazy? Can’t you see that you are too heavy for the donkey? It is the both of you who should be carrying the donkey to the market, not the other way round.”

The farmer and his son then got down of the donkey. After a while, they decided that the donkey is too tired to walk to the market and decided to carry the donkey themselves. They tied the donkey to a stick, upside down, and carried the stick over their shoulders.

The donkey, who had had about enough that day, did not like being upside down. It kicked, and brayed and struggled and managed to get itself free. It then ran away, as fast as it could.

The moral of the story : There is no way one can please everyone. It is human nature afterall….

Cheers!!

Two FoL in a row! We didn’t get Wk14 out on time so we’re putting #14 & #15 back to back. This week we kept talking about New York City and how much we miss it. Alyssa’s eyes mysteriously begin to glisten when we do, but she swears that they aren’t tears. NYC is dear to us because (1) we met and fell in love there; (2) Alyssa went to college in the City for 4 years; (3) Alyssa’s sister and bother-in-law live and work there; (4) Tyler spent a semester there and loved it; (5) it is our favorite city and we miss it for so many reasons. Here are seven things we miss about the City:

We miss walking. NYC offers a paradise for those who like to stretch their legs. Not only are the streets endless, but the streets are so full of life.

We miss being able to stop anywhere and grab Starbucks (and walk with it). Alyssa’s favorite was on 33rd and Tyler’s on 35th. Yes a whole two blocks away. Unfortunately, the Starbucks on 35th has been discovered and is just as busy as all the others.

We miss people watching. Like walking, there are endless opportunities to do this. NYC has many interesting people and getting a glimpse into their lives is terribly interesting. Here’s a great article about people watching in the City.

We miss window shopping. It is the most expensive window shopping you’ll do. It’s fun (and hard) to imagine how a purse at Saks can fetch a lofty $2,900 dollars.

We miss seeing the Christmas decor, lights and displays. Rockefeller Center always has an impressive display. Macy’s window displays are incredible too. The very best part of Christmas though is seeing the small changes that take place in small shops and independent stores.

We miss the fantastic restaurants. There are so many and they are the best in the world. Our favorite place to eat is Brooklyn near the first stop on L line. SEA (Thai food) and Zenkichi (Japanese) are some of our favorites.

We miss the buildings and architecture. Cities in general have more interesting buildings. NYC in particular has a lot of artsy buildings that show how unique the city is. Of course there are some that just plain ugly (namely the Verizon building). Regardless we miss seeing the new and different building is has to offer.

FoL Week 14: Last week was particularly cold and snow has begun to fall throughout Japan. We haven’t had any snow in our town, but it is only a matter of time before we see the first flakes. Here are some Japanese tips for staying warm in the winter.

Take a warm bath before you sleep. It will help get your temperature up so you don’t have to use so much heat.

When using heaters, keep doors closed. Never try to heat the whole apartment and open a window now and then to let out fumes.*Note: there is no such thing as central heating here. So a single kerosene and gas heater is common and the fumes can be nauseating after a while.

If you are still cold after putting on a ton of clothes. Try taking some off and starting from the beginning. Sometimes the cold gets stuck between clothes and its impossible to warm up with so many on.

A Kotatsu table is your new best friend. For those in America this table is like a coffee table with a heater underneath. Large blankets are placed under the top to keep the heat in. It’s perfect for meals when you sit on the floor with feet underneath and a blanket to keep you warm.

Tape bubble wrap to windows and doors you don’t use often. Japanese apartments have very poor insulation and the cold gets in quickly. The bubble wrap has a double glazing/insulation effect.

Hot carpets (like an electric blanket) keep floors warm and the cold underneath from creeping up.

If you just can’t get warm do some cooking. You’ll find warmth from moving around and eating that delicious, hot something you just cooked.

Bonus Tip: Tyler’s personal favorite: Using a laptop early in the morning is a great way to check email and warm up fast.
