Saturday reminded me of the times when I used to sing, of the rehearsals and the emotions at the final rehearsal. It seemed that time wasn’t there. We were working long hours, days and nights just to feel to prepared on the stage. Wasn’t the performance but the rehearsals that made those times so special. It did not always matter whether it was good or not..it just marked the end of the moments we felt so alive.

Saturday was special. I went to Nijmegen for a classical concert. During the day I had a walk in the city. Autumn there is a the most beautiful combination of grey and brown. I know it isn’t the nicest association that would come in one’s mind but it surely has a certain type of cold beauty.

The evening was getting a bit warmer with Verdi, Mozart and Wagner. The one hundred men chorus performed fragments from the composers operas. It was completely relaxing, I did not feel the three hours passing. I would like to know more about this wonderful music. It’s famous, it is easily recognisable…it is however difficult to get to its substance. It managed to make me feel like singing again…?

In the break..

The end of the world is near—December 21, 2012, to be exact—according to theories based on a purport

The end of the world is near—December 21, 2012, to be exact—according to theories based on a purported ancient Maya prediction and fanned by the marketing machine behind the soon-to-be-released 2012 movie.

But could humankind really meet its end in 2012—drowned in apocalyptic floods, walloped by a secret planet, seared by an angry sun, or thrown overboard by speeding continents?

And did the ancient Maya—whose empire peaked between A.D. 250 and 900 in what is now Mexico and Central America—really predict the end of the world in 2012?

At least one aspect of the 2012, end-of-the-world hype is, for some people, all too real: the fear.

NASA’s Ask an Astrobiologist Web site, for example, has received thousands of questions regarding the 2012 doomsday predictions—some of them disturbing, according to David Morrison, senior scientist with the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

“A lot of [the submitters] are people who are genuinely frightened,” Morrison said.

“I’ve had two teenagers who were considering killing themselves, because they didn’t want to be around when the world ends,” he said. “Two women in the last two weeks said they were contemplating killing their children and themselves so they wouldn’t have to suffer through the end of the world.”

Fortunately, with the help of scientists like Morrison, most of the predicted 2012 cataclysms are easily explained away.

2012 MYTH 1
Maya Predicted End of the World in 2012

The Maya calendar doesn’t end in 2012, as some have said, and the ancients never viewed that year as the time of the end of the world, archaeologists say.

But December 21, 2012, (give or take a day) was nonetheless momentous to the Maya.

“It’s the time when the largest grand cycle in the Mayan calendar—1,872,000 days or 5,125.37 years—overturns and a new cycle begins,” said Anthony Aveni, a Maya expert and archaeoastronomer at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York.

The Maya kept time on a scale few other cultures have considered.

During the empire’s heyday, the Maya invented the Long Count—a lengthy circular calendar that “transplanted the roots of Maya culture all the way back to creation itself,” Aveni said.

During the 2012 winter solstice, time runs out on the current era of the Long Count calendar, which began at what the Maya saw as the dawn of the last creation period: August 11, 3114 B.C. The Maya wrote that date, which preceded their civilization by thousands of years, as Day Zero, or 13.0.0.0.0.

In December 2012 the lengthy era ends and the complicated, cyclical calendar will roll over again to Day Zero, beginning another enormous cycle.

“The idea is that time gets renewed, that the world gets renewed all over again—often after a period of stress—the same way we renew time on New Year’s Day or even on Monday morning,” said Aveni, author of The End of Time: The Maya Mystery of 2012.

2012 MYTH 2
Breakaway Continents Will Destroy Civilization

In some 2012 doomsday prophecies, the Earth becomes a deathtrap as it undergoes a “pole shift.”

The planet’s crust and mantle will suddenly shift, spinning around Earth’s liquid-iron outer core like an orange’s peel spinning around its fleshy fruit. (See what Einstein had to say about pole shifts.)

2012, the movie, envisions a Maya-predicted pole shift, triggered by an extreme gravitational pull on the planet—courtesy of a rare “galactic alignment”—and by massive solar radiation destabilizing the inner Earth by heating it.

Breakaway oceans and continents dump cities into the sea, thrust palm trees to the poles, and spawn earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and other disasters. (Interactive: pole shift theories illustrated.)

Scientists dismiss such drastic scenarios, but some researchers have speculated that a subtler shift could occur—for example, if the distribution of mass on or inside the planet changed radically, due to, say, the melting of ice caps.

Princeton University geologist Adam Maloof has extensively studied pole shifts, and tackles this 2012 myth in 2012: Countdown to Armageddon, a National Geographic Channel documentary airing Sunday, November 8. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News and part-owns the National Geographic Channel.)

Maloof says magnetic evidence in rocks confirm that continents have undergone such drastic rearrangement, but the process took millions of years—slow enough that humanity wouldn’t have felt the motion (quick guide to plate tectonics).

2012 MYTH 3
Galactic Alignment Spells Doom

Some sky-watchers believe 2012 will close with a “galactic alignment,” which will occur for the first time in 26,000 years (for example, see the Web site Alignment 2012).

In this scenario, the path of the sun in the sky would appear to cross through what, from Earth, looks to be the midpoint of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which in good viewing conditions appears as a cloudy stripe across the night sky.

Some fear that the lineup will somehow expose Earth to powerful unknown galactic forces that will hasten its doom—perhaps through a “pole shift” (see above) or the stirring of the supermassive black hole at our galaxy’s heart.

Others see the purported event in a positive light, as heralding the dawn of a new era in human consciousness.

NASA’s Morrison has a different view.

“There is no ‘galactic alignment’ in 2012,” he said, “or at least nothing out of the ordinary.”

He explained that a type of “alignment” occurs during every winter solstice, when the sun, as seen from Earth, appears in the sky near what looks to be the midpoint of the Milky Way.

Horoscope writers may be excited by alignments, Morrison said. But “the reality is that alignments are of no interest to science. They mean nothing,” he said. They create no changes in gravitational pull, solar radiation, planetary orbits, or anything else that would impact life on Earth.

The speculation over alignments isn’t surprising, though, he said.

“Ordinary astronomical phenomena are imbued with a sense of threat by people who already think the world is going to end.”

Regarding galactic alignments, University of Texas Maya expert David Stuart writes on his blog that “no ancient Maya text or artwork makes reference to anything of the kind.”

Even so, the end date of the current Long Count cycle—winter solstice 2012—may be evidence of Maya astronomical skill, said Aveni, the archaeoastronomer.

“I don’t rule out the likelihood that astronomy played a role” in the selection of 2012 as the cycle’s terminus, he said.

Maya astronomers built observatories and, by observing the night skies and using mathematics, learned to accurately predict eclipses and other celestial phenomena. Aveni notes that the start date of the current cycle was likely tied to a solar zenith passage, when the sun crosses directly overhead, and its terminal date will fall on a December solstice, perhaps by design.

These choices, he said, may indicate that the Maya calendar is tied to seasonal agricultural cycles central to ancient survival.

2012 MYTH 4
Planet X Is on a Collision Course With Earth

Some say it’s out there: a mysterious Planet X, aka Nibiru, on a collision course with Earth—or at least a disruptive flyby.

A direct hit would obliterate Earth, it’s said. Even a near miss, some fear, could shower Earth with deadly asteroid impacts hurled our way by the planet’s gravitational wake.

Could such an unknown planet really be headed our way in 2012, even just a little bit?

Well, no.

“There is no object out there,” NASA astrobiologist Morrison said. “That’s probably the most straightforward thing to say.”

The origins of this theory actually predate widespread interest in 2012. Popularized in part by a woman who claims to receive messages from extraterrestrials, the Nibiru doomsday was originally predicted for 2003..

“If there were a planet or a brown dwarf or whatever that was going to be in the inner solar system three years from now, astronomers would have been studying it for the past decade and it would be visible to the naked eye by now,” Morrison said.

“It’s not there.”

2012 MYTH 5
Solar Storms to Savage Earth

In some 2012 disaster scenarios, our own sun is the enemy.

Our friendly neighborhood star, it’s rumored, will produce lethal eruptions of solar flares, turning up the heat on Earthlings.

Solar activity waxes and wanes according to approximately 11-year cycles. Big flares can indeed damage communications and other Earthly systems, but scientists have no indications the sun, at least in the short term, will unleash storms strong enough to fry the planet.

“As it turns out the sun isn’t on schedule anyway,” NASA astronomer Morrison said. “We expect that this cycle probably won’t peak in 2012 but a year or two later.” (See “Sun Oddly Quiet—Hints at Next ‘Little Ice Age’?”)

2012 MYTH 6
Maya Had Clear Predictions for 2012

If the Maya didn’t expect the end of time in 2012, what exactly did they predict for that year?

Many scholars who’ve pored over the scattered evidence on Maya monuments say the empire didn’t leave a clear record predicting that anything specific would happen in 2012.

The Maya did pass down a graphic—though undated—end-of-the-world scenario, described on the final page of a circa-1100 text known as the Dresden Codex. The document describes a world destroyed by flood, a scenario imagined in many cultures and probably experienced, on a less apocalyptic scale, by ancient peoples (more on the Dresden Codex).

Aveni, the archaeoastronomer, said the scenario is not meant to be read literally—but as a lesson about human behavior.

He likens the cycles to our own New Year period, when the closing of an era is accompanied by frenetic activities and stress, followed by a rebirth period, when many people take stock and resolve to begin living better.

In fact, Aveni says, the Maya weren’t much for predictions.

“The whole timekeeping scale is very past directed, not future directed,” he said. “What you read on these monuments of the Long Count are events that connected Maya rulers with ancestors and the divine.

“The farther back you can plant your roots in deep time the better argument you can make that you’re legit,” Aveni said. “And I think that’s why these Maya rulers were using Long Count time.

“It’s not about a fixed prediction about what’s going to happen.”

So…lets all stop worrying..they are all myths!

November 25th – Saint Katharines Day

This is the day that unmarried women pray for husbands.

It is also the day that women of 25 years of age and more are known as “Catherinettes” in France. The Catherinettes send postcards to each other. While their friends make them hats expecially for wearing on the 25th November.

Many women make a pilgrimage to St Catherines Statue to ask for help in finding a husband whilst wearing their special hats in the fear that they do not become spinsters.

“Cattern cakes” are really a soft and slightly chewy biscuit which have been spiced with cinnamon, lightly fruited and flavoured with caraway seeds.

Traditionally they were made by the English Nottingham lacemakers for the festivities on their special feast day which is 25th November to celebrate Saint Catherines Day, the patron of lace makers, rope makers, spinners and spinsters.

The recipe is said to go right back to Tudor times, and has reportedly not changed much over the centuries, although they can also be made sometimes made with a yeast dough.

Cattern cakes are allso known as Catherine Cakes (named after Catherine of Aragon, whilse she imprisoned at Ampthill, is said to have heard about the local lacemaker’s financial plight. She is said to have destroyed all of her beautiful lace purely to give work to the local lace making industry.

(Hardly seems worth it)

2. If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

(Now that’s more like it)

5. Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

Following are basic facts outlining the roots and manifestations of the poverty affecting more than

Following are basic facts outlining the roots and manifestations of the poverty affecting more than one third of our world.

More than one billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day. In total, 2.7 billion struggle to survive on less than two dollars per day. Poverty in the developing world, however, goes far beyond income poverty. It means having to walk more than one mile everyday simply to collect water and firewood; it means suffering diseases that were eradicated from rich countries decades ago. Every year eleven million children, 1 every 3 seconds, die-most under the age of five and more than six million from completely preventable causes like malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia.

In some deeply impoverished nations less than half of the children are in primary school and under 20 percent go to secondary school. Around the world, a total of 114 million children do not get even a basic education and 584 million women are illiterate.

Health

Every year six million children die from malnutrition before their fifth birthday.

More than 50 percent of Africans suffer from water-related diseases such as cholera and infant diarrhea.

Everyday HIV/AIDS kills 6,000 people and another 8,200 people are infected with this deadly virus.

Every 30 seconds an African child dies of malaria-more than one million child deaths a year.

Each year, approximately 300 to 500 million people are infected with malaria. Approximately three million people die as a result.

TB is the leading AIDS-related killer and in some parts of Africa, 75 percent of people with HIV also have TB.

Hunger

More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day…300 million are children.

Of these 300 million children, only eight percent are victims of famine or other emergency situations. More than 90 percent are suffering long-term malnourishment and micronutrient deficiency.

Every 3.6 seconds another person dies of starvation and the large majority are children under the age of 5.

Water

More than 2.6 billion people-over 40 per cent of the world’s population-do not have basic sanitation, and more than one billion people still use unsafe sources of drinking water.

Four out of every ten people in the world don’t have access even to a simple latrine.

Five million people, mostly children, die each year from water-borne diseases.

Agriculture

In 1960, Africa was a net exporter of food; today the continent imports one-third of its grain.

More than 40 percent of Africans do not even have the ability to obtain sufficient food on a day-today basis.

Declining soil fertility, land degradation, and the AIDS pandemic have led to a 23 percent decrease in food production per capita in the last 25 years even though population has increased dramatically.

For the African farmer, conventional fertilizers cost two to six times more than the world market price.

The devastating effect of poverty on women

Above 80 percent of farmers in Africa are women.

More than 40 percent of women in Africa do not have access to basic education.

If a girl is educated for six years or more, as an adult her prenatal care, postnatal care and childbirth survival rates, will dramatically and consistently improve.

Educated mothers immunize their children 50 percent more often than mothers who are not educated.

AIDS spreads twice as quickly among uneducated girls than among girls that have even some schooling.

The children of a woman with five years of primary school education have a survival rate 40 percent higher than children of women with no education.

A woman living in sub-Saharan Africa has a 1 in 16 chance of dying in pregnancy. This compares with a 1 in 3,700 risk for a woman from North America.

Every minute, a woman somewhere dies in pregnancy or childbirth. This adds up to 1,400 women dying each day-an estimated 529,000 each year-from pregnancy-related causes.

Almost half of births in developing countries take place without the help of a skilled birth attendant.

Nikon D70.

New York City Council Deputy Majority Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) hosted a ceremony yesterday to officially rename the corner of Hollis Avenue and 205th Street as “Run DMC JMJ Way” in honor of the legendary Hall of Fame rap group that began their career in this community. With hundreds of Southeast Queens’ residents in attendance, Rev. Run and DMC joined with family members of the late group member Jam Master Jay to officially unveil the new street sign and become the first hip hop artists to be honored with a New York City street naming.

The ceremony was co-hosted by Power 105 radio personality (and Hollis native) Ed Lover and WBLS radio personality Dr. Bob Lee. Also in attendance were New York State Senate President Malcolm Smith (D-Queens), hip hop legends Rahiem (of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five) and Kangol Kid (UTFO). The invocation was delivered by Rev. Carleen Thorbes of New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

The historic day began with a short parade from the Hollis Hip Hop Museum, located in the Hollis Famous Burger restaurant. Led by the Elite Marching Band, Jam Master Jay’s mother Connie Mizell and Council Member Comrie led family members to the ceremony site where they were joined on stage by Rev. Run and DMC. With their numerous hits being played, both surviving group members joined Ms. Mizell in remembering their fallen deejay and delivering positive messages to the audience.

“What this sign says to me is that you can be anything you want,” stated DMC. “Because of hip hop, I became one of the greatest lyricists of all time. And I did it without using profanity or disrespecting our beautiful Black women. Hip hop is about us doing the best with what we have to make it better for all the people after us. We are who we are because of you people.”

“This is a proud day for my whole family,” Ms. Mizell told the crowd. “I want to thank Council Member Comrie and the entire community for honoring my son and the entire group in this manner. I can remember like it was yesterday that the three of them were practicing their music in my living room in our house just a few blocks from here. And now future generations will see this street and be inspired by what they accomplished.”

Added Rev. Run, “This thing is bigger than me and D. This thing is about God giving us an opportunity to express ourselves through hip hop.”

Run D.M.C. was an influential Hip-Hop group whose members were born and/or grew up in Hollis, Queens. Founded by Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C” McDaniels, and the late Jason “Jam Master J” Mizell, Run D.M.C. is considered to be one of the most important and influential artists in rap music history. Seven ground-breaking albums and countless hit singles resulted in the group paving the way for rap music to become the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. Additionally, Run D.M.C. is given credit for immortalizing Hollis, Queens as one of the birth places of Hip-Hop.

Run D.M.C was inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009 in honor of their historic and successful twenty-five year career.

Run (born Joseph Simmons, November 14, 1964) was the brother of Russell Simmons, who formed the hip-hop management company Rush Productions in the early ’80s; by the mid-’80s, Russell had formed the pioneering record label Def Jam with Rick Rubin. Russell encouraged his brother Joey and his friend Darryl McDaniels (born May 31, 1964) to form a rap duo. The pair of friends did just that, adopting the names Run and D.M.C., respectively. After they graduated from high school in 1982, the pair enlisted their friend Jason Mizell (born January 21, 1965) to scratch turntables; Mizell adopted the stage name Jam Master Jay.

In 1983, Run-D.M.C. released their first single, “It’s Like That/Sucker M.C.’s,” on Profile Records. It was the first “new school” hip-hop recording. “It’s Like That” became a Top 20 R&B hit, as did the group’s second single, “Hard Times/Jam Master Jay.” Two other hit R&B singles followed in early 1984 – “Rock Box” and “30 Days”. By the time of their second album, 1985’s King of Rock, Run-D.M.C. had become the most popular and influential rappers in America. Besides releasing the King of Rock album and scoring the R&B hits “King of Rock”, “You Talk Too Much”, and “Can You Rock It Like This” in 1985, the group also appeared in the rap movie Krush Groove, which also featured Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys and the Fat Boys.

Run-D.M.C.’s fusion of rock and rap broke into the mainstream with their third album, 1986’s “Raising Hell“. The album was preceded by the Top Ten R&B single “My Adidas”, which set the stage for the group’s biggest hit single, a cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”. Recorded with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, “Walk This Way” was the first hip-hop record to appeal to both rockers and rappers, as evidenced by its peak position of number four on the pop charts.

Historically, the group achieved a number of notable firsts in hip hop music and credited with being the act most responsible for pushing hip hop into mainstream popular music, initiating its musical and artistic evolution and enabling its growth as a global phenomenon. Run-D.M.C. is the first rap act to have reached a number of major accomplishments:

* A #1 R&B charting rap album

* The first major rap act to appear on American Bandstand (the Sugar Hill Gang appeared on the program in 1981)

* The first rap act to chart in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 more than once

* The first rap artist with a top 10 pop charting rap album

* The first rap artist with RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums

* The first rap act to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine

* The first rap act to receive a Grammy Award nomination

* The first rap act to make a video appearance on MTV

* Signed to an athletic product endorsement deal (Adidas)

Google still makes the bulk of its revenue through advertising, but its non-advertisement revenues are growing at a spectacular rate, in particular its software revenues. Hence Google leads the fast growth list. As the company has recently announced several major new software products, continued software revenue growth is likely in coming years.

Russian antivirus company Kaspersky more than doubled its revenues to around 360 million USD in 2008. In 2009, Kaspersky exists 12 years as a company, becoming increasingly successful in the last few years. Right now, the company is the fourth antivirus company in the world, with ambitions to climb further on the ranking. At the growth rate Kaspersky achieved, the company could be able to challenge McAfee and Tendmicro in a couple of years.

The software revenue of Nintendo more than doubled, thanks in large part to the success of the Wii. Recent results indicate increased competition from Sony and Microsoft on the game console market, as well as declining demand for the Wii. It is therefore unlikely that Nintendo remains this growth rate.

Omniture, founded in 1996, provides web analytics for online business optimization. After the 100% year-on-year revenue growth in 2008, Omniture entered the Software Top 100 in 2009. The strong results and potential of the company have not remained unnoticed. Adobe acquired Omniture in September 2009.

Activision Blizzard is the gaming giant formed in 2008 after the merger of Activision and the gaming division of Vivendi. The company is a prime example of the booming gaming industry, in which consolidation takes place.

Attachmate is one of the largest privately held software companies in the world. The company was founded in 1981 in Bellevue, Washington. Attachmate focuses on host connectivity and systems and security management software.

Founded in 1994, Emblaze grew from a small Israeli software company into a diversified technology company with holdings in several software companies.

Take2 Interactive is a US based gaming company, well-known for its blockbuster Grand Theft Auto series. The release of GTA, a very popular game, boosted 2008 revenues so much that it propelled Take2 to the 8th position on the fastest growing software companies list.

Autonomy provides software for extracting information from large amounts of unstructured data like emails, presentations and phone conversations. The British company thanks its growth rate partly to the acquisition of Interwoven.

Salesforce.com is the leading company in offering Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) for businesses. Salesforce’s software revenues grew 45% and 51% in 2007.

Well today I learned a plethora of information that not only shocked and appalled me, but moved me SO much so, that I felt the need to write a blog post about it.

In my Health and Fitness class today we went over STDs, which have now been given the politically correct name of STI because a disease is something with clear, diagnosable symptoms and in terms of STIs, “once infected, a person may or may not develop signs or symptoms indicative of disease”.

Now, I’m not exactly 100% sheltered. I grew up in public school and did indeed get to cover sex ed., what an STD is, how to practice “safe sex”, etc., etc. I even had a pretty good idea of what kinds of STDs are out there: gonorrhea, syphilis, genital warts, HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, etc. This, I would venture, is fairly common knowledge. However, the things that my professor (who is a reliable source and has a doctorate in kinesiology), was telling us today in class, I for one had never heard before. I’m going to basically rattle off a series of the facts that I found to be most shocking. The purpose of this is really only to spread awareness, truth, and to really see what common society actually knows about sex and STD/STIs. If I’m not the norm in being shocked by these things, please let me know, but really, my first reaction to most of what I will list was simply, “Wow……..”

- Gonorrhea and chlamydia can cause arthritis, sterility, and gonorrhea can cause heart problems

- Generally only 20% of people infected with STIs show symptoms

- You can get infected an endless amount of times with any bacterial STI, and viral STIs will never go away

- Stage 4 Syphilis can cause heart disease, blindness, insanity, and brain damage. The previous stage has absolutely no symptoms at all

- You can contract syphilis from kissing

- Most people infected with HIV won’t show symptoms for 10-12 years

- The HIV virus generally cannot be detected from 2 weeks up to 6 months, and even a test cannot be fully negative until tested periodically for one year

- For this last point, I’ll just post a link to something called a “Sexual Exposure Chart”. Now, as the site explains, this chart is assuming that the people you’ve slept with have also slept with the same number of people. I suppose I just wonder how many people have slept with 12 people, because if those 12 people also slept with 12 people, you’re looking at quite the number, but I’ll let you see for yourself……. http://www.sm12tlk2.com/sexual-exposure-chart.html

Now, the point of this, again, is to just shed some light on a subject we’re completely surrounded by in the world. So, take a look, think about the fact that STDs are on the rise in America, despite the use of Sex Ed., and that about 75% of the time you may not even have symptoms to know you are infected.

Just think about it.

The 33-year-old is jailed on Rikers Island on charges of murder, assault and weapons possession, police said. Rosado’s brother, Marcus, also surrendered Wednesday night at his lawyer’s office, sources said Thursday. Marcus Rosado is to be arraigned on murder charges.
The stabbings occurred around 9:30 a.m. as part of an ongoing dispute that began earlier at Club Pasha on W. 46th St., police sources said. Rosado and his brother are accused of chasing Jason Gray, 30, and Christopher Guerrero, 20, into the lobby of a building on E. 26th St. Cops said the duo pulled knives and stabbed Guerrero in the stomach and Gray in the chest. Guerrero died of his wounds; Gray was critically injured. The original disagreement involved Black and Marcus Rosado brother, the sources said.
Tru Life was signed to a six-figure deal in 2005 by Jay-Z, who was won over by Rosado’s braggadocio in a face-to-face meeting. Rosado told the hip-hop mogul that he was pronounced legally dead at Bellevue Hospital following a shooting, but survived.

Let’s demystify Thanksgiving with an amazing array of facts:

1. In a gesture to commemorate the safe passage across the Atlantic the year prior and to give spiritual thanks for surviving one year on the new continent, the Pilgrims celebrated with a feast in the autumn of 1621.

2. The Wamponoag Indians forged a friendship with the Pilgrims; teaching the Europeans how to cultivate and live off the land. Pilgrim Governor William Bradford shows his appreciation by inviting the Wamponoag to their celebration.

The Indians RSVP immediately, arrived early and stayed late.

3. The original Thanksgiving feast lasted three days. The feast ceased to become known as a celebration and officially became a part-tay!

There were no leftovers.

4. The Pilgrims supplied the beer. (The proprietors of Bacon Makes It Better have decided to refrain from inserting a culturally insensitive joke at this time).

5. President George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving Day Proclamation 1789, and later, in 1795.

6. In 1817, the state of New York officially made Thanksgiving into an annual custom.

7. Abraham Lincoln, not to be outdone by Washington, issued his own Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in 1863. This officially set aside the last Thursday of November as a National Holiday for Thanksgiving.

8. Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the Thanksgiving holiday to the THIRD Thursday of November in an effort to expand the Christmas shopping season and do some economic stimulation. Congress has since moved the holiday back to Lincoln’s proclamation.

9. The Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. They then emigrate to the US and celebrate OUR Thanksgiving, too. This is a blatant double-dipping of partying. Sneaky, Canucks.

10. Benjamin Franklin lobbied for the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. He was ardently opposed by Thomas Jefferson. It is believed that Franklin perpetuated the term “tom” when referring to a male turkey, a stealthy rebuttal to Jefferson’s opposition. The term still exists today.

11. Almost 88% of Americans said that they eat turkey during Thanksgiving. It has been estimated that 46 million turkeys– one-fifth of the annual consumption total– are eaten during Thanksgiving.

Made you look!

12. Cranberries are one of three fruits that are completely indigenous to American soil. The blueberry and the Concord grape are the others.

Cap’n Crunch Berries, while unique to the US, do not count.

13. The Detroit Lions have played a football game during every Thanksgiving since 1934 (except during World War II). The first televised “Turkey Bowl” game was in 1956.

14. It is estimated that 38.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or greater from home during the Thanksgiving holiday.

15. Now go out and share your gluttony of new found knowledge to your friends and relatives during Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day!

11. It’s a sin and/or it’s immoral.

a) Why?

a) 1. If 10 then proceed to 1o a)

a) 2. If something else proceed being as verbally abusive as you like.

The aim of this trolling strategy is to have the bigot waste as much of their time/resources as possible for trying to explain to you why gayness is wrong/immoral. Remember, they could be doing something productive!

12. Sexuality is about inserting a peg (man) into a hole (woman). The gays just don’t get that.

a) Is it really (insert as many as graphic examples as possible)?

b) Gay men and women can also insert things into things (insert as many as graphic examples as possible).

c) Link to Savage Love.

Bonus: if eye-to-eye: you can cackle ominously.

The goal is to make them feel as uncomfortable as possible. First, the will get used to what you’re saying sooner or later. Also, it’s fun to watch them splutter.

13. Being gay is a lifestyle.

a) Why?

Bonus a): The Bible says nothing about homosexuality being a lifestyle.

Extra score: The Bible has no word for “lifestyle”. Jesus said nothing about any sort of “lifestyle”.

b) So what?

c) Being a fuckwit is a lifestyle, too, and I don’t see you discriminating against fuckwits(1).

d) Define “lifestyle”.

14. Gays need to get right with God.

a) Why?

b) Which one?

c) We will. Later. When we’re not busy having gay sex with each other.

d) Define “getting right”.

e) How do you get right with something that doesn’t exist at all?

f) What if they don’t want to?

a) Christians are sexual predators who want the children.

b) For centuries, Catholic priests have been busy wanting our children. Fortunately for the children, we now have Priest-Off.

Since this is the time of the season that we are likely to get sick. The following are reader-submit

Since this is the time of the season that we are likely to get sick. The following are reader-submitted H1N1 questions with answers supplied by Dr. Alissa Ackelson, infectious diseases director of Infection Control, Genesis HealthCare System

Q: Does UV light kill the H1N1 virus?

A: Ultraviolet light illuminated on surfaces at the proper wavelength can degrade some viruses. However, in order to be effective, the surface of any object has to be readily accessible to the light. This means that the undersurface of the chair, table, doorknob, etc., would not be reached by the light, and therefore, it would not be disinfected. Additionally, ultraviolet light cannot be used on skin. Therefore, there are very few places where the use of ultraviolet light would be practical or useful. Studies have shown influenza virus can survive on surfaces and can infect a person for up to eight hours after being deposited on the surface. Frequent hand washing will help decrease the deposition of virus on the surfaces to help kill the virus picked up on your hands. It also is advisable to try to avoid frequent touching of the eyes and mouth.

Q: Is the H1N1 vaccine FDA safe to get and has anyone who has received it died or gotten sick from either the shot or the mist?

A: As of Nov. 19, 2009, World Health Organization has received vaccine information from 16 of the 43 countries around the world using H1N1 vaccine. They estimate that approximately 80 million doses of pandemic vaccine have been distributed and 65 million people vaccinated. All the data compiled to date indicate that the pandemic vaccine has the same safety profile as seasonal influenza vaccine which has an excellent safety record. To date, no deaths have been attributed to the vaccine despite thorough investigation of the few deaths that have coincidentally occurred. The World Health Organization continues to aggressively monitor for side effects. To date, fewer than 10 suspected cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome have been reported in people have received the vaccine. These numbers are the same as the normal rate of Guillain-Barré formerly seen when no vaccine is available and therefore there has been no increased incidence in the occurrence of Guillain-Barré. Nonetheless, all such cases are being investigated by the World Health Organization.

In comparison, as of Oct. 17, 2009, to CDC estimates there have been more than 22 million cases of H1N1 infection and more than 3,900 deaths associated with this infection. The H1N1 vaccine has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and is recommended by the National Centers for Disease Control as the most effective way to protect against the H1N1 virus. The vaccines are made in the same way as seasonal flu vaccine and are as safe and effective.

Q: Is there mercury in the vaccine? If so, how much and whom might it harm?

A: The 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines have been manufactured in several formulations. Some will come in multi-dose vials and will contain small amounts of thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, to prevent the growth of microorganisms that can contaminate the vaccine after the vial is opened and could cause serious illness or death.

Some vaccine manufacturers have produced the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine in single-dose units, which do not require the use of thimerosal as a preservative. In addition, the live-attenuated version of the vaccine, which is administered intranasally (through the nose), is produced in single-units and will not contain thimerosal.

Three leading federal agencies — CDC, FDA, and the National Institutes of Health — have reviewed the published research on thimerosal and found it to be a safe product to use in vaccines. If you have any concerns, ask for the vaccine from a single-dose injection.

Q: Some reports have said the regular flu did not hit until October, and those who had the flu prior to that had the H1N1 virus. Is that true?

A: Influenza activity in the United States remains very high this year. So far most of this influenza has been H1 N1 but seasonal influenza A and B strains are also circulating and have been seen in patients in our area. There were some cases of seasonal influenza in the country as early as late July, but 99 percent of type A influenza has been H1N1 and influenza B has been circulating at low levels. There has been very limited availability to test specifically for H1N1 virus especially in non-hospitalized patients. However, if someone had true influenza, most of the time they probably did have H1N1. On the other hand, not everyone with flu-like symptoms had H1N1. Illnesses such as pertussis (whooping cough), severe colds and other viral infections could have similar symptoms as the flu. Just because you had flu-like symptoms, you may not have had H1N1. You still should get the vaccine as soon as it is available to you.

Q: What is the difference between H1N1 (swine flu) and seasonal flu?

A: The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death; approximately 36,000 people dying from complications from seasonal flu in the United States each year. More than 90 percent of deaths and about 60 percent of hospitalization occur in people older than 65.

The best way to prevent seasonal flu is by getting a seasonal flu vaccination each year to protect against that year’s strain of the disease. Some people, such as older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease), are at increased risk for serious complications from seasonal flu illness.

2009 H1N1 (sometimes called “swine flu”) is a new influenza virus first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread — through coughs or sneezes by people with influenza or by touching a surface or object with flu viruses on it and then touching your mouth or nose.

While it is essentially a different strain of the influenza virus, the H1N1 virus differs from seasonal flu in the timing of the virus and those identified as at highest risk for complications. H1N1 has occurred nationally since April 2009, not following the same late fall through winter timing pattern as seasonal flu. Illness with 2009 H1N1 virus has ranged from mild to severe. While most people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment, hospitalizations and deaths from infection with this virus have occurred.

In seasonal flu, those considered at “high risk” of serious complications include people 65 years and older, children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions. The 2009 H1N1 flu has caused greater disease burden in people younger than 25 years of age than older people. At this time, there are relatively fewer cases and deaths reported in people 65 years and older, which is unusual when compared with seasonal flu. Other previously recognized high risk medical conditions from seasonal influenza also appear to be associated with increased risk of complications from 2009 H1N1. These underlying conditions include asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, kidney disease, neurocognitive and neuromuscular disorders and pregnancy.

Q: When will people older than 24 who have chronic health conditions, such as asthma or compromised immune systems, be eligible for the H1N1 vaccine? According to the CDC, this was to be a priority group.

A: The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a panel made up of medical and public health experts, developed recommendations regarding who should receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine. These groups include:

Pregnant women
Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age
Health care and emergency medical services personnel
People 6 months through 24 years of age
People aged 25 through 64 years who are at higher risk due to chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems
The ACIP further determined that if there was not an adequate supply of vaccine available, the distribution would be limited to the following groups until more vaccine was available. These priority groups include:

Pregnant women
Household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months of age
Health care and emergency medical services personnel with direct patient contact
Children 6 months through 4 years of age
Children 5 through 18 years of age who have chronic medical conditions

As more vaccine becomes available and the groups listed above are vaccinated, we will continue to see more vaccine available to others in the other risk categories. It is important to continue to monitor updates from the local health departments to learn when free vaccine clinics are available.

Mahmood Hamidy Zakzouk | Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 108 | Size: 1 MB
Ever since its advent, Islam has been engaged in a continuous struggle against the repeated endeavours to obliterate the truth for which it stands. This struggle will continue until the world comes to an end, since the struggle between truth and falsehood and between virtue and sin is eternal and began with the creation of man and will continue as long as mankind inhabits the earth.

Islam is the final and conclusive Divine Faith revealed by God Almighty, and accordingly the last link or Divine communication from the heavens to the earth. As such Islam has been subjected to more false accusations than the previous religions since it came: ” in truth confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety”.(5/48) The allegations against Islam, since its advent and until the present day, have been repeatedly circulated, the only difference being the wording and the attempt to present them in a semblance of scientific diction. The scholars of Islam answered these allegations each according to his own thought and we do not belittle the efforts of those scholars.

The aim of this book is to present conclusive and verified proof regarding the most important allegations against Islam that have been raised and repeated in recent years especially in the age of the Internet. Accordingly, God Willing, in the very near future, these authentic proofs will be transmitted on the Internet, and thus we offer our modest contribution in dispelling all points of misunderstanding and misrepresentation regarding the Faith of Islam, its teachings, and its Prophet.
