“How do we befriend death? Reflections on Assisted Dying”

Dr James Woodward

Monday 30th April 2012 at 7.30pm

In the Retro Choir of Derby Cathedral

Dr Woodward will introduce the topic, there will be time for Q&A, then drinks in the Cavendish Area.

The issue is highly topical. The Falconer Commission recently recommended a change to the present law in this area. The General Synod of the Church of England strongly rejected that recommendation. But the issue remains raw for many families and for some working professionally in this area.

The evening is being sponsored by the Montgomery Trust, and is open to all.

Holocaust Memorial Day: Thursday 26 January for Friday 27 January 2012 National theme for 2012: ‘

Holocaust Memorial Day: Thursday 26 January for Friday 27 January 2012 National theme for 2012: ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’.

From: Derby City Holocaust Memorial Day Working Party.

Further information: Collette Flood, tel. 01332 255483 Anne Johns 01332 764792

In 2001, the first Holocaust Memorial Day was held to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust in World War 2. The date was 27 January, the day on which Auschwitz was liberated, and it has been held on that date annually ever since. Over the years the commemorations have included other genocides, such as those in Darfur, Rwanda, Somalia, Ukraine and Srebrenica; and not just the Jewish race but others, too, who were targets of Hitler’s hate – Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, the disabled (both physically and mentally), homosexuals, intellectuals – in fact anyone who was perceived as ‘different’ or who did not toe the party line.

In 2012, 27 January, falls on a Friday. Jewish preparations for the Sabbath (Saturday) begin on Friday at dusk, which falls early at that time of year. Therefore, out of respect to the Jewish community Derby is keeping Thursday 26 January as Holocaust Memorial Day, though there are also events on other days during that week. Once again we have first class survivor speakers prepared to tell us their stories and answer our questions.

Simon Winston, who, as a young child with his parents and younger brother, lived on the run from the Nazis for two years, will be speaking both at the Multi-faith Centre and as our key-note speaker on the Thursday evening. Simon, who only began to talk about his experiences when Beth Shalom, the National Holocaust Centre, opened near Newark, is now an experienced and sought-after survivor speaker with an extraordinary and moving story to tell. (Biography below)

Derby citizen Bernard Grunberg, our keynote speaker last year, will again be talking about the Kindertransport, the trains which brought thousands of Jewish children, including Bernard, out of mainland Europe to England just before the outbreak of war; and Stephen Mendelsson, also a highly experienced Kindertransportee speaker but with a very different story from Bernard’s, will answer questions from the audience after both showings of the film ‘Into the Arms of Strangers.’

Below is a calendar of Derby’s Holocaust Memorial events for January 2012, correct at time of going to press; but any additions will be advertised in the local media and on the HMD website:

All events are free, unless otherwise indicated, though booking is required for some; and everything listed is open to all.

Tuesday 24 January: 9.15am, QUAD, Market Place, Derby. ‘Into the Arms of Strangers’, the award-winning documentary about the Kindertransport. Includes both contemporary and more recent footage, and is followed by a Q&A session with Kindertransportee Stephen Mendelsson. Booking essential, via QUAD box office, tel 01332 290606
