In this stage I added the photo transfered medal emblem, as well as the lyric treatments. SInce this going to a monoprint edition, the next step will be the monotype layers. One will be just like this, the others will have a mask to keep it “clean” from the monotyping.

For the next layer I added blue. No since this was blue over yellow, green happened. So to remedy that, I double printed the blue and guess what? It came out blue!

In this stage, I added a slightly darker yellow/ochre to give the fabric portion a more….fabricy look.

Utterly majestic guitar, and magisterial song. Ashes to Ashes, by Faith no more, reminding us of what was good about them….so easy to forget now. Love the big shuddering guitar, soaring voice.

Just stunning.

When I was put on trial for being a Faith No More super fan, this was Exhibit A – a two disk compilation of every B-Side, Rarity and pro-recorded live mp3 I could lay my hands on, sequenced and tracked by myself over a long boring weekend.

There’s allsorts on here – from early Faith No Man demos, to alternative versions of Chuck Mosley songs to a plethora of B-Sides from Mike Patton’s time in the band, I’m pretty sure I have it all. Some of it is bad (All Quiet In Heaven, Hippie Jam Song), some of it’s meh (the As The Worm Turns outtake from the Angel Dust recording, The Grade), and some of it I wonder why they didn’t actually make it on the albums (Absolute Zero, The Perfect Crime).

Needless to say it’s a KEEPER. If anyone is interested in a copy, I’ll put it up for download just let me know.

I’ve not made it to as many concerts as I’d like to have in the last few years. Life’s definitely busy. However, looking back on the years, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to have seen many quality live acts. The three bands I’ve seen the most often live (aside from local bar level Tampa bands) are Megadeth, Diabolic, and Incantation. I’ve seen very memorable shows that include the return of Ozzy to Black Sabbath in 1997, GWAR (always a fun live experience), Faith No More, and many other bands that I’d worship if they were the key figure in any religion. None of those mentioned crack my top 5 though.

Some bands are incredibly talented, some bands know how to really put it all into a live show, and some bands straight up leave you with goosebumps wondering what the hell you just experienced.

Here are the five most memorable live concerts up to this point in my life:

5.Mega Smegma – The Brass Mug Sept. 2006 – A reunion performance by the most entertaining band from the Tampa area. Mixing comedic lyrics with musical talent, stylistically they run the gamut from punk, funk, metal, ska, and everything in between. Several times I’d seen them, THIS was the best.

4.Carcass – Jannus Landing September 2008 – Damn!!! The reformation of one of my favorite bands of all time. Man they were tight as HELL at that show. Flawless execution of bona fide classics!

3.Body Count – Sun N’ Steel Metalfest March 2004 – Before this show, I could honestly take or leave Body Count. This show forever changed my perspective on them. High energy as hell, their songs came across much stronger in a live setting! A bunch of near 50-year-olds showing far more spirit and fire onstage than kids half their age during that festival.

2.Impotent Sea Snakes – Livestock Festival March 1998 – What the hell was THAT?? Hard rockin’ fury with every perversion known to mankind and then some. A bunch of fun songs musically, but the stage show was the winner. Naked porn stars getting it on during the set onstage. A dude on stilts. More naked chicks. Words could do no justice. If you ever get a chance, check them out…

1.Mr. Bungle – State Theater St. Petersburg August 1999 – That was magic. You know Mr. Bungle. You know they are talented beyond human capabilities. You know they are definitely NOT limited by the mere concept of musical genre. I can’t imagine ever seeing a show that would equal what this was. There were probably more pieces of potential musical instrumentation onstage for this performance than all other shows I’ve ever seen combined… lol.

As far as overall concert… unfortunately never got to see the Milwaukee Metalfest nor the one in Wacken. Neither have I been lucky enough to attend the Maryland Deathfest. The closest I ever made it was the Sun N’ Steel Metalfest in Pinellas Park, Florida back in 2004. Two days of great metal bands and over $700 spent at merch tables… Man, to do THAT again…

Start of a new artist book I’ve been working on which is a combination Dos a Dos Tunnel book. It is utilizing a digital print of the previous mixed media piece I did.

I sooo love Mike Patton.  It’s hard to choose between all of his various bands and projects, so I am just gonna go with Faith No More, since it was what he was more “commercially” known for.

This is my absolute favorite FNM song ever.

It resonates with me.

I can remember around that time I was completely into Blues. I discovered all these awesome musicians like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf, to name a few. And as I heard that Lousiana Red is going to play around the corner in a tiny village called Frankenburg in an inn named Gasthaus Preuner me and my friends, who were also infected by my Blues addiction, headed there to hear this outstanding musician. A very pure performance – just Louisiana Red and his guitar. Iverson Minter aka Louisiana Red died on the 25th February 2012 at the age of 81. Another great Blues man has gone …

My second Nick Cave live experience – and another great one! At the beautiful Circus Krone in Munich the Australian singer introduced us his latest release “The Boatman’s Call“. Beside this he and his Bad Seeds gave us some classice and wonderful rarities (“Mercy“, “The Carny“, “Plain Gold Ring“).

JUDAS PRIEST – Linz (Tips Arena)

Well, I do think that this was really my last chance to see the Metal Gods live in concert – the awesome Judas Priest stopped throught their farewell tour in Linz at the Tips Arena, a horrible loction with an awful sound. But anyway – Rob Halford and the boys will gave us a good headbang training, that was sure

Unfortunately there was a support act – Thin Lizzy. It was really annoying to see this band – and they played far too long. But the cheesy perfromance was funny to look at. Especially the bass player – he acted like he would love to be in Manowar some day Me and my friend killed the time by drinking some beers and counting people who were wearing shirts from other Metal bands. This was really funny, because nearly any group (even the cheesy ones like Sodom for example) was represented in that way!

Before Priest started their show a huge curtain screened the whole stage and “War Pigs” from Black Sabbath was played! A very good idea for an intro before the Birmingham Metal heroes started their set with “Rapid Fire“. The setlist was really perfect – Judas Priest played at least one song from any album which was recorded with Rob Halford of course! So no tunes from the Tim “Ripper” Owens years, but that was more than okay

DIE ÄRZTE – Vienna (Arena – Open Air)

This show was one of the funniest I have ever seen: The German fun-punk-band Die Ärzte played during their “Unrockstar” tour two dates in a row at the Arena in Vienna. Me and my friends attended the first show and we had a lot to laugh Most of the songs were from the current release that time “Geräusch“, but drummer Bela B (“Wien, Du kannst Dich als gefickt bezeichnen!”), guitarist Farin Urlaub (“Ich könnte eure Mutter sein!”) and bass player Rod Gonzalez added also some Ärzte classics to the setlist which you can see listed below:

JETHRO TULL – Graz (Stefaniensaal)

My third Jethro Tull concert was a very special one, because this tour was under the name “A Little Light Music” which means, that Ian Anderson and his band will play the songs in  acoustic style and regarding the official tourbook, which I bought myself (of course!), it seemed that some rarities will be played too! So we were very looking forward to the show which took place at the wonderful Stefaniensaal in Graz. And we were told that this special tour will be recorded for an official release.

Tull started the show with a rarity from 1968 – “Someday the Sun won’t shine for you“! I was smiling all the time, because I never expected this tune. More surprises followed like “Under Wraps” (as an instrumental), “Nursie“, “One White Duck” or “From a Dead Beat to an old Greaser“. The band was in an excellent mood and Ian Anderson talked a lot and funny things between the songs. Like his introduction to “A Christmas Song“: “This is not the time for overeating, heavy drinking and having casual sex with farm animals – so be warned, David Pegg!”

The line up on that tour was Ian Anderson (vocals, flute, guitar, madnolin), Martin Barre (guitar), Dave Pegg (bass) and Dave Mattacks (drums, keyboard). The Austrian television did an interview with Ian Anderson before the show for the magazin “Seitenblicke”. This broadcast also featured two of the biggest Tull fans I knew: Elisabeth and Michael Cermak from Vienna (both passed away and they are still sorely missed – R.I.P. Gucky & Michi) ….

MARTIN BARRE (Jethro Tull) – Munich (Babylon)

Well, this could also be called “Jethro Tull without Ian Anderson”, because as Tull guitarist Martin Barre did this solo tour his backing band was:

Unfortunately not many people showed up and so it looked very weird that Martin Barre played the Babylon which is a huge hall for appr. 500 people at least! And it was really strange that only a few Tull fans came along … anyway – it was a wonderful performance of one of the most underrated guitar player.

HELLDORADO – Vienna (Chelsea)

When I first heard some songs from Helldorado I hardly believed that they are from Norway! The sound of that band is very Americana (mixed with Tex Mex and Western Spaghetti rattles) and if Quentin Tarantino is looking for a new soundtrack he should drop singer Dag Vagle a line

That time Helldorado was a four piece group with two guitars, bass and drums. “Director’s Cut” was the current release which was released by Glitterhouse. Unfortunately not many people showed up in Vienna at the Chelsea, but those men and girls were very enthusiastic. So it was really an amazing show with some fine surprises as the covers of “Psycho” (The Sonics), “For the Love of Ivy” (The Gun Club) and “Jack the Ripper” (Nick Cave).

THE WEDDING PRESENT – Vienna (Planet Music)

A friend of mine, who travelled a lot with me around to see some concerts, is a huge fan of the British band The Wedding Present. And so he told me that I have to follow him to the Vienna concert, which took place at the Planet Music (formerly called the “Rockhaus”). David Gedge and his band were part of the “Gravity” festival and they were on the bill on the second day. Before the group entered the stage there played a few other bands, who were really annoying (the only funny thing was a name of those supporters – “Castiotone For The Painfully Alone“, for example

As I really didn’t know any songs from The Wedding Present I was very relaxed as they started the show. But after a few minuts they hooked me with full force! They kicked ass and so I was shaking until the last song was played. Very impressed I walked to the merchandising to buy me two shirts and as they didn’t had any CDs with them I bought myself later the current release “Take Fountain” which features this awesome song called “Interstate 5“. So – if you have the chance to see The Wedding Present live in concert – just do yourself a favor and be there!

MEGAHERZ – Munich (Metropolis)

As I worked for a German music online company that time, we were invited to this show of the Munich band Megaherz, which sounded very in a way like Rammstein or Oomph!. So nothing really special to me, because this kind of music was and stil is not my cup of tea. But I have to admit that the perfromance was really very impressive when they played new songs from the album “Himmelfahrt“.

WOVEN HAND – Paris (La Machine du Moulin Rouge)

Another mini Woven Hand tour with one of my best friends! This time we decided to do three shows in a row of the “The Threshingfloor” tour – Paris, Diksmuide and Amsterdam. So this concert was the start and it took place at La Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris.

Before David Eugene Edwards, Pascal Humbert, Ordy Garrison and Jeff Linsenmaier entered the stage, the support act Josh T. Pearson opened the show.

And I have to admit that this performance was not my cup of tea – very weird and noisy in my opinion.

Then Woven Hand started with brandnew songs: “Sinking Hands“, the title track and “A Holy Measure” marked the beginning of the concert. Then, powerful as always, “Tin Finger” followed. The next tune was a wonderful surprise for me: “Swedish Purse“, which sounded very close to the amazing studio version, gave me the creeps. After “Dirty Blue” and “Kingdom of Ice” another new song was next: “Raise Her Hands“, for which Pascal played the upright bass like in the old days of 16 Horsepower again, filled the room with full force. The two new tracks “His Rest” and “Orchard Gate” were laid-back before “Winter Shaker” kicked ass again. And with the straight forwarded “Off the Cuff” the normal set was finished. After the encore break the wonderful “Iron Feather” received the attention of the loud clapping crowd again. And the last song of that night was an outstanding version of “Kicking Bird“. As anybody (also Pascal, who put his bass away) expected the end of the song, David continued playing after a long feedback, and so it was no wonder that the people in Paris went completely nuts again

SLIM CESSNA’S AUTO CLUB – Zürich (El Lokal)

My first live show in 2013 was the one and only Slim Cessna’s Auto Club again! To see one of my favorite bands I had to travel to Switzerland once again (like I did before in 2009 and 2012). And it was my first time that I visited Zürich.
With my friends we headed to the location called “El Lokal“. It’s a pub/restaurant and not really a good place for a rock band. The tiny stage is perfect for some solo performances, but not for a group which consists of more than two people. Anyway – I was quite sure that the Auto Club will shred it
A.Tom Collins, also from Denver, Colorado, opened the show. They played very nice tunes mostly from their current release called “Stick & Poke” which was produced by Robert “Big Bad Bob” Ferbrache, who also toured with Slim Cessna’s Auto Club this time and over the last years.

When Slim Cessna, Munly Munly, Lord Dwight Pentacost, Robert “Big Bad Bob” Ferbrache, Daniel “Danny Pants” Grandbois and Todd “El Peeler” Moore began with the intro of “Americadio” I found myself dancing, shaking and cheering in the front row

They played a very tight and intense set – and it was just breathtaking again! Although they played already thirteen gigs in Europe the band was full on energy and approved once again, why Slim Cessna’s Auto Club is one of the best live acts on this planet! And it was so nice to see and hear that the crowd was also completely into the music – so another magic night has happened! Thanks to Slim that I was the “first sailor” again

AC/DC – Munich (Olympiastadium)

After seeing AC/DC just two months ago in the same city (at the Olympiahalle) this one was much bigger – an open air spectacle at the footballstadium Olympiastadion. The same place where they recorded the awesome DVD “Stiff Upper Lip Live“. This time we were not that close to the stage, but nevertheless we had a good stand for the “Black Ice” show. Again, the Northern Ireland rockers of The Answer did the support before AC/DC started their “Rock’n'Roll train over Munich”

The setlist was almost the same as in March – one more song was played this time: “Dog eat Dog” from the classic album “Let There Be Rock” (1977) was sandwiched between the new tunes “War Machine” and “Anything goes”. During the second set it poured with full force. You could see the water on the stages and when “Let there be Rock” started I thought, that Angus Young would not do his show, because of the heavy rain. But I was completely wrong: He did his solos and rocked out in the rain like hell! I never saw something like this before! He really didn’t care at all about the weather, the rain and the danger (hey, he’s playing his Gibson and EVERYTHING around him was just drenched!). Nobody is like Angus – and nothing in the world is like AC/DC!

WOVEN HAND – Diksmuide (4AD)

One day after the Paris show we drove to Belgium to see Woven Hand playing at the 4AD, a very nice but also tiny location. And this time the show was sold out! I was afraid that the club would be full packed but luckily this was not the case. So we had no problems to get a place in the first row. In contrast to the show the day before the support act was not that annoying at all. The Dutch band The Black Atlantic did a fair job for opening for Woven Hand.

After Woven Hand played the first three songs from the new album it was obvious that the band was more into it than in Paris. So the tracks from “The Threshingfloor” sounded much tighter that night.

Kicking Bird

Very remarkable was David’s announcement before playing “Kicking Bird“: “This song is written by this Belgian fella”! And to be honest I didn’t know that Peter van Laerhoven has penned this awesome track for Woven Hand! This Belgian guitarist left the band after touring for the album “Ten Stones” and it was a BIG surprise for me to meet him again at the merch stand! It was so nice to talk with him again and I still miss his awesome guitar work on stage.

SLIM CESSNA’S AUTO CLUB – Martigny (Les Caves Du Manoir)

Two days after the Zürich show me and my friends travelled into the south of Switzerland to Martigny. A very nice village and the location Les Caves Du Manoir was just perfect for Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. But before we got our second dose from this outstanding band we had to be patient because of the support acts. First, the local two piece band called “Hannibal Slim & Captain Boogie” started the show. Two slide guitars, one bass drum with vocals – a kind of thing which is trendy in these days, I do guess. Nothing special at all but they did a nice job. After that A.Tom Collins played their set like in Zürich again.

Well, I was afraid that Slim Cessna’s Auto Club will not play that long like in Zürich. And unfortunately I was right so they shortened the setlist and “Do you know thee Enemy?” and a second encore (“Providence the New Jerusalem“) were not played. But nevertheless they rocked like hell again! And one of my friends saw the band for the very first time – but it was obviouis that he would become also a huge fan and so he smiled a lot the next days in his brandnew Slim Cessna’s Auto Club T-Shirt

WOVEN HAND – Amsterdam (Paradiso – Big Hall)

In Amsterdam a dream came true: Finally I was going to a concert at the wonderful Paradiso! I always wanted to attend a show in this breathtaking location, which was a church long ago,  and when I stepped into these halls I already got the creeps. And with the lightning the stage looked so amazing – words can’t describe it. So if you have the chance to see a concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam – just do yourself a favor and visit this outstanding place.

So this was the last Woven Hand show for us (after Paris and Diksmuide) – number three in three days

The support act was The Black Atlantic again and this time the boys had a home game. So it was visible that they enjoyed every minute of the gig that night.

Then Woven Hand did their set – and with this special lightning it was such a wonderful experience to see David, Pascal, Jeff and Ordy playing in this unique place. The setlist was the same as the two shows before, but that didn’t mean, that the concert was boring. Any performance of Woven Hand is very special and so you always see and hear new things. And in Amsterdam David did more of his vocal improvisations between the songs. For us, this show was the best of the three, because especially the new songs grew tighter and the band played them better from show to show. But we have to admit that all concerts were wonderful, amazing and outstanding. Every night had its highlights – like it is when you are touring for Woven Hand

IAN ANDERSON – Munich (Prinzregententheater)

Another very special concert: Jethro Tull‘s Ian Anderson recorded in 1995 the instrumental/orchestral album “Divinities – Twelve Dances With God” with keyboard player Andrew Giddings. In Munich at the beautiful Prinzregententheater they were supported by a band, which you could call “Jethro Tull without Martin Barre” – the line up was:

The show was divided in two parts – the first one featured the whole “Divinities” album and after a short break the second part, picked with fantastic Tull suprises, followed. So it was the first time for me to hear one of my all time favorites from Jethro Tull – the wonderful “Heavy Horses”! Also “Jack-In-The-Green“, “Dun Ringill“, “Cheap Day Return” and “Wond’ring Aloud” came in a live sound the very first time to my ears. And the band didn’t play the other classics like always – so they arrangements for “Aqualung” and “Locomotive Breath” were completely different.

K’S CHOICE – Vienna (Metropol)

“Not an Addict” was the song from the Belgium group K’s Choice, which charted nearly worldwide (indie charts). With “Paradise In Me” the band of the Bettens sisters (Sarah and Gert) recorded a timeless gem which features also some other great tunes like “Mr. Freeze“, “Iron Flower” or “To this Day“.

In Vienna at the Metropol K’s Choice played in front of a handful people, but nevertheless they did an amazing gig. I can remember that they started with “To this Day” – so I was from the beginning until the end completely into the show. After the performance some guys from the Austrian radio station FM4 did some interviews with the people who showed up. Well, they interviewed also me, but as I was really speechless of this wonderful concert, I only said things like: “This band is unbelievable and the next big thing.” In some way, I was right, I do guess

AC/DC – Wels (Fluggelände)

This was the biggest concert event in Austrian history: Over 90.000 people attended the show of AC/DC in Wels! It took place at the airport area and when you look at the first video listed below, you can imagine, how huge it was

Flight over the area just before the show:

We queued very early to get a good stand. So at appr. 2 p.m. we waited for the entry, which was announced for 4 p.m.. During the waiting the first showers came down and then we heard that the entry will not be before 5 p.m. So we waited on … while our feet and backs started to hurt. Finally they opened the bars and we headed to the stage – we stood on the left side and we had a good sight to see the whole band. So before our heroes started their show we had to bear some support acts. The first two (from Austria) were just crap – nothing special at all And this really didn’t help to kill the time. But when Volbeat from Denmark started their set, we forgot our pains for a while – a very nice mixture of Heavy Metal, Rockabilly and Punkrock cheered the whole crowd up. Then some renovations were done and so we were waiting again …

At 9 p.m. AC/DC started with the funny cartoon intro again before everybody in the audience headbanged to “Rock’n'Roll Train”! After “Hell ain’t a bad Place to be” the rain started again and it grew heavier and heavier. Brian appeased:” Hey, it’s nothing!” Well, if this was nothing, what is really heavy rain for Mr. Johnson? Anyway – AC/DC didn’t care at all about the weather and so they rocked through the well known setlist with full force again. Funny thing was that during “Thunderstruck” some thunderbolts appeared around the field – what a scenery! So we also forgot everything around us – the rain, the hurting feet and backs and also the mud

After the show we walked throught the mud back to the car – that was not easy at all, because if you didn’t take care about your shoes or boots it could happen that they stucked in the mud, which was appr. 20 centimeters high! At home I recognised the dirt all over our shoes, boots and trousers – this is what I do call ROCK’N'ROLL

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS – Vienna (Gasometer)

First of all, I have to admit that I was completely disappointed by this performance. The album “Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!” was beside “Nocturama” the weakest work by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. BUT I have to say that we are talking about this outstanding composer Mr. Nick Cave! So if he records a weak album compared to his other works, means NOT that it’s a crappy one. To qualify it: Thousands of other bands would be happy if they could release an album of that standard in their career.

Anyway – the show at the horrible Gasometer in Vienna (the sound there is in most cases awful!) was really weird to me. It was far too loud and the mix was a desaster. And it was the first time that I left a concert: During “We call upon the Author” I went outside, because as an admirer of the work of Charles Bukowski I didn’t want to hear his singing “Bukowski was a jerk!” … Returning to my seat I was still wondering about Nick’s behaviour on the stage. I did know that he gave up smoking, but for me it looks like he has changed his cigarettes with coloured pills. And when he completely killed “Into my Arms” I was very sad and disappointed. Into the bargain it was the last concert I saw The Bad Seeds with longtime man Mick Harvey who left the band one year later. After seeing and hearing this noise chaos I totally understand Mick’s decision.

SOUNDGARDEN/FAITH NO MORE/GUNS N’ ROSES
Stuttgart (Cannstatter Wasen)

A friend of mine who moved to a village near Stuttgart invited me to see with him the one and only Guns N’ Roses live in concert. He was a huge fan and I liked them too, but not that much. The “Use Your Illusion World Tour 1992″ stopped at the Cannstatter Wasen. A very large area where appr. 75.000 people came to watch Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan and the others.

It was a very warm and sunny afternoon (no cloud at the sky!) as we queued up for a good stand. Then the waiting begun until Soundgarden opened the show with a very weak performance. After the first songs, some people uphold their tickets and booed. Guitarist Kim Thayil‘s answer was the middle finger – so the booing became louder and louder …

When Soundgarden left the stage a huge applause followed the band. After that Faith No More was ready to rock our socks off. All members were dressed in orange overalls and it was obvious that there showed a lot of people up just to see this amazing crossover group! A very tight and heavy performance impressed me and many others, who never heard from these guys so far.

Then the waiting continued until appr. 9 p.m. – finally Guns N’ Roses entered the stage with “It’s so easy“. Beside songs from the latest releases “Use Your Illusion I” and “Use Your Illusion II” the Gunners suprised with some fine tunes (like the intro of Pink Floyd’s “Mother” before starting “Paradise City“, the “The Godfather’s Theme” and “Wild Horses” from the Rolling Stones).

RORY GALLAGHER – Bad Reichenhall (Sternenzelt)

This day was very special for me because finally I was going to see one of my all time heroes: Mr. Rory Gallagher! The Irish Blues-Rocker played in the tiny town Bad Reichenhall in Germany, which is very close to the Austrian border. The location was called “Sternenzelt” – a huge tent, in which in the spring and summer time many concerts happened. Unfortunately this place has been removed forever.

Me and my friend were lucky enough to be very close to the stage to see Rory Gallagher with his classic Fender Stratocaster in full action. The line up of his band was:

Richard Newman (Drums)
David Levy (Bass)
Jim Leverton (Keyboards)

Unfortunately I can’t remember the exact setlist of this memorable concert, but Rory played among others “Out on the Western Plain“, “The Loop“, “Tattoo’d Lady“, “Bullfrog Blues” and “Messin’ with the Kid“. During the show a man held the vinyl cover of the classic album “Irish Tour ’74” over to Rory for signing. Strangely it seemed that he was not really happy with it and so he threw the signed cover back on the stage after one or two songs. Maybe he was frustrated that Rory didn’t play all the tunes from that record …

Rory Gallagher, one of the best and outstanding guitar players, died on the 14th June 1995 at the age of 48.

MURDER BY DEATH – Munich (Ampere)

My third live experience with the fantastic Murder By Death from Bloomington, Indiana. This time I had the chance to meet singer Adam Turla before the show for an interview, which I did for the Austrian independent radio station B138. It was a very funny and interesting conversation which you can stream/download for free here!

Many of the songs that night were played from the current release “Good Morning, Magpie“, another masterpiece by this outstanding band.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS – Munich (Zenith)

In 2001 NIck Cave & The Bad Seeds recorded their masterpiece “No More Shall We Part“, for me, one of the best albums ever recorded! So I was very looking forward to this concert, which took place in a horrible huge hall called Zenith in Munich.

First we just checked this impersonal hall – a very old factory building. During walking around the support act Goldfrapp opened the show. This indie-electronic band entered the charts with the album “Felt Mountain“. And for this kind of group the Zenith was the worst place to play live. These kind of sounds need a small club atmosphere and not a hall which has place for thousands of people …

When Goldfrapp left the stage we found our place – perfect situated between the bar and the stage. With a beer in my hand I was ready for Mr. Nick Cave and when he and The Bad Seeds started with “Fifteen Feet of pure White Snow” I was completely into the performance. And with the next tune the goose flesh became more and more: “Oh my Lord“, one of Cave’s best compositions drove me to tears of happiness. The other songs were a fantastic mixture of brandew tracks, classics and rarities just like “Saint Huck” or “The Curse of Millhaven“. For that a big clipboard was prepared for Nick – just in case he forgot some of the lyrics

WOVEN HAND – Vienna (Szene)

My first Woven Hand show in 2007 – and some more should follow that year (Prague two days later and some dates in France at the end of that year)

David, Pascal, Peter and Ordy played the Szene in Vienna again. The hall was well crowded and I was standing very close to the stage and ready for the show, which started with full power: “Winter Shaker” was the first possibility for doing some headbanging. To the songs “The Speaking Hands” and “Elktooth” I continued my banging in front of David. The wonderful and atmospheric “Truly Golden” (written by guitarist Peter van Laerhoven and a slightly more different version was used for the Belgian movie called “ Een ander zijn geluk“) followed. For “Deerskin Doll” the band rocked with full force again before David fetched his Banjola for “Whistling Girl“. And with “White Bird” an all time favorite of mine gave me the creeps again. “Tin Finger“, heavy played as always, was the perfect soundtrack for more headbanging. Then it was Banjola time again: A wonderful rendition  of “Phyllis Ruth/Swedish Purse” left me speechless again. Some vocal improvisations of “Into the Piano” led into another live classic of Woven Hand: “Your Russia“! After the encore break the 16 Horsepower tune “Black Soul Choir“, played by David solo, filled the room. And with “Dirty Blue” a heavy conclusion finished the concert.
