“Clearly, I regret the email was quoted incorrectly and I regret that it’s become a distraction from the story, which still entirely stands. I should have been clearer about the attribution. We updated our story immediately.”

-Jonathan Karl, ABC News Chief White House Correspondent

Jonathan Karl passed his story off as accurate when in fact he made no serious effort to see the emails himself or to verify the accuracy of the information. That’s not reporting. It’s stenography. Perhaps he was an innocent dupe, but incompetence is hardly an excuse for inaccurate reporting. These so-called journalists like Karl, Judy Miller and the rest of the media dupes, should be fired and shunned from the industry. Accuracy used to matter in journalism. Now self-styled reporters simply regurgitate every rumor they here and speculate about what will happen next. Never mind that they are almost always wrong. This needs to end. The truth should matter. Facts should be verified before they are published or aired. And most of all, there should be consequences for getting something this wrong. For too long there haven’t been. That needs to end, and it needs to end today.

A few weeks ago, there was a rather nice article about the Nice Ride program, the Twin Cities version of Montreal’s Bixi bike-share program, and how well it’s been doing.

The comments left by right-wing intellectuals were not as nice, and often not even coherent:

minn12 Apr. 29, 1210:09 PM

Could we please have a story on what this all costs? Is this program paying for itself, or losing money without all the sponsors?

Despite being told by the very next commenter that it was almost all privately funded, “minn12″ spent his next few comments ranting about alleged waste of his tax dollars — when he wasn’t ranting about how nonprofit entities, entities working for the public good, were immoral. Never mind that (as sane commenter “jimdog” pointed out) BCBS, one of Nice Ride’s sponsors, has a vested interest in keeping people healthy and that getting them to make lots of short bike trips instead of hopping in their cars to go six blocks is a really good way to do that. Never mind that enabling people to make short bike trips downtown relieves downtown streets of a lot of car congestion. Never mind that it’s simply the right thing to do. “minn12″ couldn’t care less — he’s sucked deeply into the selfish Ayn Rand evil part of the Stupid-Evil-Crazy Vortex that holds that compassion and the common good must be destroyed and nothing will suck him back out again.

And now for something that will not upset very many right-wing intellectuals — the JPMorgan debacle. Paul Krugman explains why: “But of course JPMorgan wasn’t doing do-gooder liberal stuff like solar, it was just engaging in financial tricks of little or no social value. That makes it all OK.”

Or, as what I suspect Krugman means to say but knows that he won’t be allowed to say by his NYT bosses:

“Are you wondering why the Republicans prefer to beat up on Solyndra rather than go after real crooks like Jamie Dimon — even though you’d think that Dimon’s status as an Obama buddy would make him a tempting Republican target?

“Simple: It’s because to attack Dimon and JPMorgan is to attack everything the Wall Street firms that own the GOP hold dear — namely, the perceived ‘right’ of the hyper-rich to rip every last dime out of our hides while chanting about freedom and the flag.”

And that is that.

Professor Bell was a HERO who dedicated his life to desegregating the United States. From his job as the only black lawyer in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in the 1950’s, to his work alongside Thurgood Marshall bringing hundreds of desegregation actions in Mississippi, right up to his leaving Harvard, Professor Bell lived what he preached. That his life’s work was radical or provocative says more about how far we have left to go. If its radical to be appalled that Harvard Law School had no women law professors and only five black male law professors among hundreds of professors, then the world could use a lot more radicals.

LET THE FAKE SCANDALS BEGIN!

Michelle Bachmann: “Well I think we know that just within a day or so the President of the United States will be taking a trip over to India that is expected to cost the taxpayers $200 million a day. He’s taking two thousand people with him. He’ll be renting out over 870 rooms in India. And these are 5-star hotel rooms at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. This is the kind of over-the-top spending, it’s a very small example, Anderson.” [TPM: Bachmann Outraged Over Made Up Cost Of Obama's India Trip (VIDEO)]

President Barack Obama will not be protected by a vast armada of 34 US warships when he visits Mumbai this weekend, officials said, calling reports from India on security preparations “comical.” The claim that many of the 288-ship US naval fleet would be deployed to waters off Mumbai was “absolutely absurd,” Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters on Thursday.
One of the things those of us who remember the 90s really don’t miss is the parade of fake scandals — the endless investigations into alleged White House misdeeds (140 hours of sworn testimony into allegations that the Clintons had misused their Christmas card list). And it’s starting again: a huge fake uproar over allegations of outrageous spending on Obama’s India trip.

While this Court seriously entertained the plaintiffs’ allegations that their privacy had been violated–and indeed it was, even if not in the sense contemplated by the Privacy Act–after ample opportunity, they have not produced any evidence of the far-reaching conspiracy that sought to use intimate details from FBI files for political assassinations that they alleged. The only thing that they have demonstrated is that this unfortunate episode–about which they do have cause to complain–was exactly what the defendants claimed: a bureaucratic snafu.

BECK: Why were they asking the race question, you said when, in 1790? … Right, they want to know, do you count as three-fifths? Do you count at all? So, you have to know how many slaves did you have? People find that offensive today because the idea was, if we’re going to count, we want to know how many are here for services etc. etc. and slaves would get less. Well that’s not right. One. One. ‘I’m not three-fifths, I’m one. Whites are not worth than me.’ Now reverse it, why are they asking this question today?

CO-HOST: Because minorities are worth more than whites.

BECK: Exactly right. So you will get more dollars if you are a minority. So you are worth more as a monitory. Well there is no difference. The reason you don’t answer the race question is because one, everyone counts as one. All men are created equal. If you were offended back in 1790 about slavery and that everyone should count the same, do not answer the race question. How dare you. How dare you. At least in 1790, they were doing it to slow the South down on slavery. To try to stop it as much as they can. Today they are asking the race question to try to increase slavery. Your dependence on the master in Washington. No way, don’t answer that question.

It’s a well-known line that in DC a gaffe is when a politician gets caught telling the truth.

It’s a well-known line that in DC a gaffe is when a politician gets caught telling the truth. That definition of a gaffe applies pretty well to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s controversial comment in Nigeria earlier this week comparing recent electoral problems in Nigeria to the 2000 election, a comment that spurred headlines like this from the New York Post: “HILLARY UTTERS GAFFE REGARDING 2000 ELECTION DURING NIGERIA VISIT.”

Clinton told a group of democracy activists:

“Our democracy is still evolving. You know we had some problems in some of our presidential elections,” she said. “As you may remember, in 2000 our presidential election came down to one state where the brother of one of the men running for president was governor of the state. So we have our problems too.”

Now a lot of people on the right and in the media are attacking Clinton for this gaffe, lumping it in with Clinton’s recent rebuke to a man who asked a question about what Bill thought about a specific issue (Clinton told the man “My husband is not Secretary of State, I am.”) The reality is that Clinton is right; we do have major problems with the way we conduct our elections, ranging from unfair laws designed to discourage minority voter participation to differing ways of casting and counting ballots. 2000 highlighted many of these problems. Jeb Bush may not be corrupt but our system certainly has a problems. When the woman heading the elections department is a state co-chair of a particular presidential campaign you know you have a problem. When thousands of African-Americans are turned away from the polls for being on a list of ex-fellons when they weren’t ex-fellons, you know you have a problem.

Watch Hillary’s comments:
