No wonder he fell in love with it. Just walking down to the bay from Lindos or Faliraki is an experience of its own. Awesome nature, and an amazing bay with marvellous underwater experiences.
Natural stone surfaces, pine trees and emerald water. If mermaids do exist they must live here.

The beach is known by the name of Anthony Quinn bay today. Named after the actor. The waters is amazing for snorkelling with its owe deep emerald colour it is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes.

As you guys know by now I am not very found of tourists. In fact I prefer to hide from the great tourist spots. I never understood common tourists. Think about it. How many times have you met somebody that have been to (Name a country) and when you ask what they did they often give you the answer:
“We had a great time, we hung out on the beach, had awesome party’s at the nights and then …it was great we eat great food and also we took a tour in (The city you chose) s old town and we bought this (showing some crap made in Taiwan with the sign of the country you just named.). I am not cynical … and people like different things, I know that. But you know when people do this and in the same breath claims that they have experienced the country I have some objections.

In my humble opinion that is N-O-T to experience the country. I bet it would have been so much cheaper walking to your own Capitols old town and drink and buy the same crappy tourist souvenir instead of adding the flight ticket and hotel.

No if you really want to experience you should go off-season, stay at a local village or at a small place and walk around by you own and talk to the locals.
If you want to get to know the town, use the local bus or train. Ask the bartender on a small pub of his favorite restaurant. Ask a local for the hidden bay. Find out (You can use Google) for the perfect bay to dive in or mountain to climb. Ask if they know somebody that can show you their spots.

I often wonder how jobsworths have jobs. I can’t get an interview, never mind a job; I think I

I often wonder how jobsworths have jobs. I can’t get an interview, never mind a job; I think I’ve sent out over 200 applications and CVs in the past two years. Now I’ve given up. As long as I can scrape by being creative, I accept I’m never going to be rich; at least, not monetarily. Wiki has an ample description of a jobsworth:

A jobsworth is a person who uses their job description in a deliberately uncooperative way, or who seemingly delights in acting in an obstructive or unhelpful manner…The term remains in use, particularly in the UK, to characterise inflexible employees, petty rule-following and excessive administration. It has largely supplanted the older term, “Little Hitler. (Wiki)

Today I dealt with jobsworths from two different places: the city council and a choreographer.

I just love doing needless spreadsheets for the city council. If they want to know the ins and outs of my business, they should talk to HMRC, not get me to do extra work when none of their staff have a clue about sole trader paperwork, and send me back and forth for weeks (’til I flip my lid like last time – that seemed to be the only way to get someone from ‘higher up’ to attend to me).

Every thirteen weeks, they demand the ins and outs of my business operations, cashflow, profit and loss, what underwear I have on when uploading new items to my website, and so on. They ask for more than the Inland Revenue and they’re the ones I file tax returns with! In order for me to get help with my council tax, I have to jump through these hoops four times a year – y’know, in case I’m ripping the system off, ’cause it’s not like government employees ever do that, right? (Don’t get me started on the vile charade that it is to live in Corporation UK, not a free human being but property of the State). I find it a gross insult for them to treat the self-employed like pariahs – we pay higher taxes, have no pensions security or sick leave, if we go bust, we’re out of a job; I could go on. As a single woman, I don’t get a 50% discount on my council tax, I get a measly 25% – they make me SICK.

Anyway, I’m ranting now because I despise them and I’ll go off on one if I don’t reign it in. Every single time I get called down there to show my accounts, I get given the runaround by staff who don’t have a clue what they’re doing. Sometimes, I think it’s because they (the public-facing staff members) don’t like anyone making a living that’s fun. I’m on less money than they are, but it’s the one chance they get to exert some authority by being awkward and telling me I don’t have the right paperwork (and then they mess MY benefit up, money I’m entitled to from my strawman).

This is just a small part of what happens every quarte, when I spread all my accounts before them and they’re – as usual – unsatisfied:

Them – We need to see your wage slips.

Me – I’m self-employed, I don’t get wage slips.

Them – Well, we need to see evidence from your employer about your income.

Me (chewing fist and trying not to be rude, and failing) – What part of ‘self-employed are you finding hard to comprehend?

Them – Well, you must have wage slips, what do you give the Inland Revenue at the end of the year?

Me – I don’t give them anything, I file my tax return online and keep records of Sales, Drawings, and Expenditure in case they ask for it. Which they never have.

Them (looking at computer screen) – Well, it says here you need to provide wage slips to say how much you’re earning. Don’t you have anything from your accountant?

Me: I don’t use an accountant. Look at my figures, I can add that up on a calculator.

Them: Well, if you don’t have an accountant, what do you send to the HRMC (Inland Revenue) each year?

Me: I do my self assessment online

It goes on for an hour, they take my paperwork, give me a receipt, I ask them can they think of anything else they need as this always happens and they always ask for more, they say No, then they send out a letter a couple of weeks later saying ‘the information presented is insufficient blah blah blah…’

Back to the printer! The printer was wilful and refused to print this morning – this ALWAYS happens when I have a council appointment – so I took my laptop with spreadsheets and access to my online cart software so they could take the figures from source and input them onto their system. Naturally, they refused and wanted hard copies. I explained I didn’t have access to a printer at that time. They told me to go next door to the library and access their internet – no, I don’t know why I couldn’t access the internet at the council office.

I went next door and told them what I needed to do. The library assistant told me I needed to be a member and would have to bring ID and open an account. It was at this point I realised I’ve achieved a much greater control of my emotions than I thought, as I was able to stop from having a fit and storming off.

I put on my Bree Vanderkamp Botox face with Mona Lisa smile and floated out of the building, straight across to the butty bar where I ordered a big breakfast barm to eat my barely-bridled rage into a carbohydrate coma. After that, I went home and had a strong coffee and a sit down before my second trek of the day to the council offices.

All in all, I think I was very good not to give them the disparaging looks their below par service deserved; it’s not their fault they’ve been stomped into a banal existence, I guess. We’re in a society that is geared towards keeping people stupid, after all.

After wrestling with my printer (which is now sulking and refusing to print again), I made it back to the office with minutes to spare before closing.

As for the choreographer, he’s emailed us singers a set list for the show – his spelling is atrocious – told us to learn the harmonies without us knowing who’s singing what or the vocal range each singer has; he gets paid to fly over from Tenerife to teach us the movements but sends us video from last year two weeks before we go. Money for old rope much? He could have sent this a month ago. More than a month ago! He could have sent this as soon as we sent our signed contracts back. And not in stupid pando format!!!!!

If it’s just video footage, it would have made more sense to just convert it at his end to a simpler format – we don’t need menus and fancy pants stuff – and then I wouldn’t be pulling my hair out, trying to download it from his crappy slow connection. For a second, I thought ‘Am I stupid?’ – only a second, mind – and then I read an email from another singer asking me could I open the files, because she couldn’t.

I have to do everything in my power to hide my true personality for the next six months, haha. I don’t suffer fools and can’t abide by jumped up people who don’t deserve the role they have. If someone truly has something to teach me and knows their subject, I’m all ears. But I’m feeling iffy about this guy. One of the girls seems nice and I hope I get put in a room with her, but the other one hasn’t deigned to reply to either of our emails. I’m the one with Diva in my stage name, it should be me being all elusive! I hope she’s nice and I’m sure she has a simple reason for not being in touch – she might not have regular access to the internet, she might have fallen and can’t get up, she might be shy – I have a feeling I’ll be put in a room with her just because we’re the same height; the agent kept going on about it. ’Cause people who are the same height automatically get along…

I’m going to take everything and everyone as I find them, try not to get involved in drama, just keep my head down, work hard, enjoy the Greek culture, and explore the island whenever I can. I’m a born worrier and I’m sure I’ll have a ball once I stop stressing.

I also have the added pressure of moving my entire two-bedroomed flat into a storage unit, with two weeks in which to accomplish it, and learn these songs, dance routines, move abroad, head hurts. I haven’t packed a thing today. The place looks jam packed with all my crap, but after the council debacle, I feel wiped out. I’m teaching tomorrow, so I can’t even pack all day because I need to keep the living room clean and tidy. And then Undercover Lover’s taking me out for our last date before I leave him and do a runner across Europe

Oh my God, please let me get everything done in time. And please help me find my passport. I have a bad feeling I packed it with the stuff going in storage…and as for Rhodes, I’m seeing Benidorm (the TV programme). It should be Dreamgirls in my mind.

Oh, dear. Just keep reciting Bill Hicks.

It’s only a ride.

You will never really have planned for it to end this way but, even so, you might have shoved your dirty knickers under the bed as you left for the office. But the dirty dishes and dusty windowsill and hairy plughole? You leave those be: to tidy would be to jinx. There’s a lot to be said for holiday romances, you think, afterwards. For one, you are rarely responsible for the cleanliness of the location where the Night is Spent. For two, it is a contained experience. The tequila sunrises, the cockroaches, the Night Spent: they all belong to that fortnight in Faliraki, forever. But here, at home, you have let him into your life and he has stained everything with his presence. Look: there’s your favourite after-work bar, that you were asked to leave for inappropriate behaviour. Over there, the tube station where he undid your belt without you noticing. In your kitchen, your fridge, the very one he pressed you against when you went to get a glass of water and he just couldn’t wait. And your bed. Your actual bed that you live in. He was there, asleep, in real life. The first thing you did when you got in the next day was press your face into his pillow, just in case it had trapped any of his scent. It hadn’t. Is your life over? Probably.

Verdict: RoT thinks that normal humans are very strange, putting themselves through this. One to avoid, thanks.

I like Rhodes very much. True, I have only been for one day, but one day from a cruise ship can give

I like Rhodes very much. True, I have only been for one day, but one day from a cruise ship can give you a good enough impression of a place to know if you like it or not. And I do. In fact I could go as far as to say I was very impressed with the parts of this island I visited, namely Rhodes old town and Faliraki.

Let’s start with Faliraki. Busy, vibrant, lively, crazy, hub of entertainment and debauchery for the young …. its reputation might be, but at 9am when your cruise beach excursion drops you in the centre of town, it most certainly is not. In fact, I was really rather pleasantly surprised by Faliraki. The beach, for a start, is pretty stunning and probably one of the nicest, longest, sandiest beaches I have seen on any Greek island. It is littered with sunbeds (4 Euros a go – Aug 2011) but there is enough beach to plonk down your towel without the necessity of having a sunbed simply because there isn’t any space for your towel (a la some of the Turkish beaches I have mentioned previously.) There is also much going on – all kinds of crazy watersports, jet-skis, inflatables of many a variety, paragliding. You name it, you can probably do it on Faliraki beach, but I actually quite enjoy this as it gives you something to watch and something to laugh at too whilst whiling away your time in the burning sun.

Faliraki Beach

The sea is also beautiful. It is one of those beaches which stretch for quite a way into the sea before it actually gets deep, giving you the impression of being in a huge, shallow, clear swimming pool. Along the beach you get the usual cafes and restaurants and various other playground areas for children and it is quite quite lovely.

The beach appears to be at the end of a long street filled with the tackiest gift and beach shops, tattoo parlours, more cafes, many bars and restaurants, but it is, in fact, somehow more upmarket than the other notorious ‘hang-0ut resorts for the young’ that I have visited. There was a McDonald’s KFC, Burger King etc, but – and maybe I say this because we left before the riotous youth arose from their pits – it seemed quiet and very pleasant. I could definitely recommend it. And I would go back for a week’s holiday.

Now for Rhodes Town. Again extremely impressive and rather lovely. The old town was situated directly adjacent to the cruise terminal and was literally five minutes walk away. There is also a tiny beach there, again clean and sandy and it looked rather inviting, but surprisingly haunted by a sign telling you not to swim. This was quite a puzzle as to why and many people were choosing to ignore this and swim anyway.

Rhodes Old Town

The old town appears before you through a stone archway and comprises many winding, quaint little streets absolutely choc-a-bloc with shops and cafes, again offering you all the tack and Greek memorabilia you find on most islands, but in so lovely a setting you feel much more encouraged to buy. The streets lead up to an old fortress and Church, again worth a look. In fact you could probably spend several hours wandering around the old town enjoying the shops and ancient architecture.

Rhodes made a very good impression and I hope another cruise I take in the future returns me to this little golden Greek island. A lovely place to spend a day.

First day on Rhodes, or actually the second, we flew in last night. Faliraki. Louis Colossos Beach.

First day on Rhodes, or actually the second, we flew in last night. Faliraki. Louis Colossos Beach. The first time in our lives we bought a last-minute trip, and I think it will also be the last one. People say “never say never”, but I pretty sure that after the experience we are having, this IS the last one we buy the “last-minute”.

There is nothing wrong with the hotel or the village per se, if you like these kind of things: huge all-inclusive hotel with hordes of drunken normen, swedes, finnes, russians and Englishmen, which constantly eat, eat, eat, and then drink till they drop. With hundreds of screaming children running around at the pool area. The neighbouring area is filled with fur and gold shops (for Russians, as all the signs are in Russian). The somewhat decent mini-market is 3 km away. There are no restaurants in the area, or at least none that people actually sit in (probably because of the all-inclusive area), so we had to walk 3 km to get to a small tavern. The food was not the best. I actually love the Greek food, so this was a disappointment. My mousaka had no salt in it at all. And I mean AT ALL. My husband ended up giving his last 3 bits of souvlaki to the stray kitten, because he himself couldn’t chew it, while the kitten didn’t care if it was the bread, the onions or the meat. We know because we fed him all of the above and it disappeared in milliseconds in his throat.

So the first impression is less than favourable. We’ll see what the next day will bring.

In a week when London was devastated by mindless thuggery, it is somewhat ironic to be talking about the behaviour of the British abroad.

But recent Foreign Office statistics caught my eye because to some extent there is a link between the wanton behaviour of the mindless idiots on the streets of London and other cities this week and the stupidity of some of our younger travellers once they have gone through passport control.

I am not, of course, referring to those crazy enough to get mixed up in drugs when overseas because, frankly, if they are not aware of the draconian laws and fairly unpleasant jails in some overseas destinations then clearly they have been taking something.

Brits living it up in Faliraki

No, I am thinking more of the youngsters whose drunken antics, unsocial and sometimes lewd behaviour catches the attention of our tabloid journalists.

It is here that I think there is the link with events at home this week – peer pressure. Whether fuelled by cheap booze, adrenaline or whatever else might set their pulses racing, many of these kids are encouraged into these actions through the example and encouragement of those around them.

Take the boozed up kids in places like Laganas. They see their mates downing glass after glass of cheap alcohol and feel they have to do the same or lose face.

While Foreign Office statistics show the number of Britons arrested continues to fall, the number of Brits hospitalised abroad has increased. Spain had the most cases, followed by Greece. Although the statistics do not specifically identify the reason for the trip to hospital, I think we can assume a significant number were drink-related.

A tragic event hit the headlines recently, with the death of a British guy in the notorious Zakynthos resort of Laganas. It reminded me of events in what was then also a notorious Greek resort – Faliraki in Rhodes. The Saltmarsh Partnership was called in to help restore the reputation of the island, one that was being tarnished by the behaviour of young drunken Brits in this small resort.

Sentido Apollo Blue - 5 star hotel in Faliraki

This was something of a challenge but one which subsequently proved to be an outstanding case history of how such situations can be turned round. With crucial practical measures being implemented, such as controls on organised bar crawls and increased policing, the situation was brought under control. Intensive public relations work produced such memorable headlines as ‘Faliraki is nicked’, making it clear a line had been drawn under these shenanigans.

Faliraki rapidly disappeared from the headlines. Rhodes has subsequently rebuilt its traditional couples and families market and moved on from there by pushing much of its hotel base further upmarket.

The whole situation arose because too many people wanted too much from the young visitors – bar owners made drink cheaper and cheaper to draw them in, while some reps encouraged clients to visit certain establishments. It all just went too far.

Happily, that situation was readily resolved. Sadly, the situation currently in London has a much more sinister foundation and we can all only hope that it, too, is quickly brought peacefully under control.

By Harry Van Versendaal Stelios Bozikis, the mayor of Zakynthos, had 364 days to publicly criticize

By Harry Van Versendaal

Stelios Bozikis, the mayor of Zakynthos, had 364 days to publicly criticize or actually do something about the Ionian island’s notoriously problematic tourism product.

Instead, he picked the one day when he should have kept silent.

Speaking on television on Wednesday morning, Bozikis slammed the “inappropriate” behavior of foreign tourists in the popular summer resort of Laganas. He did so only a few hours after one of these visitors was stabbed in the heart by a local taxi driver.

The mayor said the fatal incident, which followed a verbal exchange between five British nationals and two cabbies, was the result of the island attracting cheap, low-grade tourists.

Of course, blaming the tragic incident on the island’s popularity with “second-rate tourists” is like a killer blaming his actions on childhood abuse. In that sense, it was an insensitive and politically cynical statement prompted — most likely — by an appalling mix of cheap patriotism and opportunistic scapegoating.

At the same time, Bozikis was conducting another faux pas by reducing the now-dead 18-year-old Robert Sebbage — a young man he knew nothing about and while the full circumstances surrounding the killing were still unknown — to the ugly stereotype of a young Brit behaving badly.

Before pointing a finger at the hordes of British tourists that flood the island’s bars and beaches during the summer period, the mayor should first take a minute to contemplate and condemn the terrible action of the perpetrators (who, like many of their colleagues, apparently thought it was normal to drive around with knives in their glove compartments).

Bozikis of course is right that Laganas — like the resorts of Faliraki on Rhodes and Malia on Crete — are a magnet for the full-on party and binge-drinking crowd. But if Laganas, or any other resort for that matter, is renowned among fun-seeking British youths as an anything-goes party zone, that is the responsibility of the local authorities; in other words, of people like himself. If bars are allowed to sell adulterated alcohol and tour operators are given a free rein on the island, that again is because local authorities are quite willing to turn a blind eye to the mess when it serves their own interests. If Laganas is a magnet for heavy-drinking low-budget tourists, it’s because it has been designed that way.

Bozikis is right that the party needs new rules but that goes first of all for the hosts of the party.

Rhodes, capital of the Dodecanese, in the southern Aegean Sea is a great holiday destination for all

Rhodes, capital of the Dodecanese, in the southern Aegean Sea is a great holiday destination for all tastes. Greece relies on tourism which provides 18% of export revenue; in Rhodes tourism is even more important – our guests help keep the island afloat.

I first came to Greece in 1984, visiting beautiful Corfu, having been bitten by the Greek bug as a child when reading “My Family and other Animals” by Gerald Durrell. Like millions of other people, I was hooked and became an addict visiting Greece ever since. I worked my way south over the years, eventually making my first visit to Rhodes 15 years ago. It was love at first sight. Not only does Rhodes have such a fantastic variety of attractions on a relatively compact island, making it easy to see & experience a wide range of attractions, it’s welcome is the friendliest I’ve ever experienced in this most welcoming of countries – which is quite something considering Greece’s welcome to visitors is legendary. I have made over 40 visits to Rhodes since 1995, finally achieving my dream and moving to the island of Helios, the sun god, a year ago.

As the whole world knows, Greece has it’s problems. Some friends thought I was mad to move at such a time. However, as always, I knew better! (Ahem). Yes, life has been hard for Greece in the past year, but that doesn’t knock the spirit of Rhodians. We’re remote from the troubles which afflict the mainland cities. (An analogy would be life in the Hebrides versus London – but upside down with over 300 days of sunshine a year).

I’m just hoping that Rhodes bucks the trend again as it did last year by increasing visitor numbers again. Forecasts are currently good, especially from eastern and central Europe – with a 25% increase in visitors from Russia being forecast. In 2010 we even had an increase in visitors from the UK & Germany, contrary to forecasts – not just the thousands of visitors who return every year (warning: many people are so enchanted by Rhodes they can’t help coming back year after year) but many new guests too. All were pleased to find the scary stories of strikes and demonstrations shown on TV screens worldwide simply do not affect us here in laid-back Rhodes. (Rhodes is nearly 500km south of Athens – a one hour flight or fifteen hour ferry trip away from the mainland).

It’s easier than ever to come to Rhodes. In addition to the traditional package holidays, we are enjoying a surge in “pick & mix” holidaymakers using the new generation of internet agencies which allow travellers to select their own preference of flights, accommodation and extras from a a la carte menu. For the more adventurous, an ever-increasing proportion of travellers, the recent increase in DIRECT flights to RHODES gives even more flexibility.

Budget airlines including easyJet, Air Berlin, Jet2 and others have been joined by Ryanair offering DIRECT flights from many more airports across Europe this year, here’s the list (and start dates):

Rhodes is a fabulous destination with something for every type of holidaymaker, families, couples, singles, groups… The island is steeped in history, with magnificent archaeology and historic buildings including Rhodes Old Town (World Heritage Site) and picturesque Lindos, cosmopolitan shopping in Rhodes town, beautiful unspoilt countryside in the mountains, the wilder western coast and the sparsely populated south of the island, and bustling resorts on the sheltered north-eastern coast – with some of the finest Blue Flag beaches in the Mediterranean – all surrounded by the sparkling crystal clear waters of the Aegean.

Accommodation to suit all tastes can be found on Rhodes. Self-catering apartments, traditional villages houses and luxurious private villas cater for those who like the freedom to do their own thing. For visitors preferring hotels there’s a vast range from luxury five-star resort hotels, family hotels and small pensions through to boutique hotels for those who prefer something a little different.

Wherever you decide to stay, whatever style of holiday you prefer, Rhodes offers the friendliest of welcomes and the sunniest climate in Greece – with over 300 sunshine days a year!

http://flights.idealo.co.uk/route/

Idealo has a very useful range of filters: select your departure country and city/airport, destination country and airport (Greece, Rhodes – RHO) and see the range of prices over several months, then just enter your desired dates to see actual prices available.

http://www.skyscanner.net

Skyscanner offers a simpler interface, but a very useful feature of being able to select “any airport” from your country of departure, then enter Rhodes (RHO) as you destination and see where the best prices are.

Welcome to my world. I hope to inform, educate, amuse and generally let you know what’s rocking my boat from day to day.
I look forward to comments. Please let me know what you think about items published here, what you like or dislike… all contributions will be welcome.
You can find out more about me on Facebook, and see what I’m Twittering about – just go and seek falirakimark…

I work in the tourist industry here in Rhodes. During the winter months my main occupation is working for a friend’s travel agency; helping develop an exciting new interactive website for luxurious holiday villas and developing ICT and back-office systems to support the growing business. As a bonus I am able to bring my business and marketing skills to the fore – good exercise for the brain cells – and utilising my many years of experience and qualifications.

In early May I’ll be combining this work with my job as night security/receptionist at a large family-run three-star hotel in the lively resort of Faliraki. I’m really looking forward to welcoming the thousands of guests we’ll have staying with us again this year. It’s a fabulous job. The family are great people to work with. The guests make working a pleasure, coming from all over Europe, and sometimes beyond. Last season our visitors included people of all ages from (in no particular order) Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Italy, Holland, Germany, England, Scotland, Wales & the USA. I love helping people, so assisting them in gaining maximum enjoyment from their holiday is a bonus. I have a passionate love of Greece which I’ve been visiting since 1984, and Rhodes in particular where I enjoyed 35 holidays, most with my sons, before eventually getting around to making the dream a reality and moving here. I try to pass on my passion to our guests, which they seem to appreciate. In return they make my job a pleasure, many becoming friends who stay in touch after they return home. modern life has some shortcomings, but the internet isn’t one of them – it’s fantastic to be able to use email, Skype and the like to stay in touch. Already many regulars have already been in touch to let me know when they’ll be back to stay with us again this year.

It had been my intention to learn some languages over winter, not least Greek which has been a long-term failure (beyond some basics) to date, and to complete my qualification for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL/TEFL). However, winter has been far busier (thankfully) than I anticipated with next to zero progress in un-Englishing myself. So, I’ll be cramming a little last minute learning in over the next few weeks, but no doubt relying on the wonders of Google/Bing translators on my netbook and some good Greek-style arm waving again when I get stuck this summer.

If you want to know anything about visiting Rhodes, or life here, just ask! I’ll be pleased to try to help.

Right, time to sign-off for a little sleep before getting up to watch the first F1 Grand Prix qualifying of the year from Melbourne (one of my other passions). Goodbye, for now.

Rhodes as well as Crete are the main tourism regions in Greece. The tourist season start from early

Rhodes as well as Crete are the main tourism regions in Greece. The tourist season start from early May and goes up until the end of October. Tourism currently focuses rather on the northern half of the island, but slowly the south attracts more and more tourists .From Rhodes town and almost throughout the entire West coast until Ialysos there is a huge chain of hotels, nightclubs and bars. Most of the huge Rhodes hotels and accommodations are located on the north west part of the new town around the aquarium area.

The tourist centre of Rhodes is located on the east side of the island. This was due to climatic conditions, as on the west side is much stronger winds while the east side is protected . From north to the south is Rhodes has numerous small towns, which are now strongly influenced by tourism. Not far to the north-east are the thermal baths of Kallithea, reconstructed and re-opened last year. A little further south, finally, the region around Faliraki is the most tourist area of Rhodes. The place in the 70′s consisted of a small fishing village with a tavern, today you will find there many discos, bars, restaurants and other ways of entertainment and nightlife.

From Trianda you can get to Filerimos, and visit the ruins of Ialysos, which also is located there, and from where you can have a breathtaking view to the north tip of the island. On the west side of the island are the ruins of the ancient city of Kameiros while in the north-west of the island is located the Valley of the Butterflies. In this valley the butterfly Euplagia quadripunctaria , encountered in large numbers as well as the Harlequin butterfly. The reason for this huge number of butterflies is that this valley is the only one in Greece, where the Oriental Amber trees grow, which its smell of resin attracts those butterflies. The best time to visit the butterfly valley is from middle of June until September.

Monolithos in the south, right on the coast, is one of the three points at which the The Hospitaller Knights of St John defended the island. On a beacon of the rock, you van spot the ruins of an old Castle which was later became a monastery, today there is still a small chapel.

One of the most popular attractions of the island is the town of Lindos with the famous Acropolis. The city is marked by its many white houses, often decorated with pink Hibiskus flowers, small lanes and the many donkeys, who carry visitors to the Acropolis hill . The Acropolis of Lindos is after the Acropolis of Athens the most visited in Greece. Among other attractions is the St. Mary’s Church, with its numerous frescoes.

We stayed at the Hotel Evi Apartments for a week at the end of October 2003. It was the last week of the season, so Faliraki was fairly quiet. All of the late-night clubs on Club Street had closed down, as had most of the drinks-only bars on Bar Street. The tavernas, restaurants and shops were still open though!

The apartments at the Evi were clean and modern, with full individual air conditioning. Maids changed the bedding and towels every day, and emptied the rubbish. Catering facilities were fairly basic (a fridge, two hotplates and a sink), but we had planned on eating out most of the time. We tried a few of the nearby tavernas, and soon settled on one called the ‘Nectar Taverna’ on the main Rhodes-Lindos road. Service was good, and the food fantastic (in quality and quantity) compared with the restaurants nearer the centre. There were several ‘corner shop’ supermarkets nearby – Morrisons, Asda, Safeway and Sainsburys! Food selection in the shops was a bit limited; spirits were fairly cheap.

The hotel was at the southern end of Faliraki, quite close to the main Rhodes-Lindos road. Faliraki centre (and the beach) was only about 10-15 minutes walk away from the hotel.

Local taxi’s and buses run a shuttle service up and down the hill. The Acropolis is a 15 minute climb out of the other side of the village (or you can take a donkey ride!). Admission tickets for the Acropolis were 6€ each for adults; children go free. There was quite a lot of restoration work going on while we were there – it looks as though they’re trying to rebuild significant parts of the Acropolis, incorporating the original remains where they can.
The last day – everything closing down
By the time the end of the week came around, the resort had already begun closing down for the season. Friday 31st October seemed to be the point of no return; when we looked around the resort on the Saturday morning it was like a ghost town. I was half expecting the tumbleweed to roll down the street! All of the shutters were down on bar street and club street, and the shops were busy stocktaking and packing everything into boxes. We arranged to keep our room until the evening because of the late return flight time, so we could enjoy lounging around in the last of the sun by the hotel swimming pool. An early meal at the taverna, followed by a few hours sleep before our coach pickup.
