Team USA has made some cuts after their 4-2 win over the University of North Dakota on Saturday night. The 30-man tryout roster now stands at 24 players with some notable names having been dropped by USA Hockey this morning.

The 6 players released from camp are:

US-NTDP members Jon Merrill and Justin Faulk, Boston University forward Vinny Saponari, David Wolhberg of the Michigan Wolverines, late invite Kenny Ryan of the Windsor Spitfires and 1st round selection John Moore of the Kitchener Rangers.

Certainly the name that stands out amongst that group is that of John Moore, the extremely gifted skater who was taken in the first round last June by the Columbus Blue Jackets. Moore has been playing on the blueline this season for the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL and has 20 points in 30 games.

The Americans have two more cuts to make, one forward and one defender, which will be made after thier exhibition game against the Czech Republic in Moose Jaw’s Crushed Can on Tuesday night.

Der Himmel Uber Berlin (AKA: Wings of Desire) – 1987

Director – Wim Wenders

Starring – Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, and Peter Falk

Tackling the spiritual subject of the lives of Angels and their influence on the lives of human beings, Wings of Desire follows  Damiel (played by Bruno Ganz) as he becomes fascinated with and eventually falls in love with a young trapeze artist (Marion Played by Solveig Dommartin) performing in West Berlin (pre-fall of the Berlin Wall).  The film aspires to much more than simplistic confirmation of faith or belief.  Instead, Wim Wenders struggles with the ideas of how his angel characters experience the world while avoiding the cliché of making them infallible beings of infinite grace and experience.

Firstly, if the story seems familiar, you might be thinking of the far inferior re-make, City of Angels, starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan.  If you haven’t seen the re-make, congratulations, if you have, at least it can only go up hill by watching this film after the fact.  The story follows an angel named Damiel who, along with his fellow angel Cassiel, roams the city following humans through all stages of their daily and life-changing experiences.  As the story progresses, Damiel expresses his desire to experience the things that people do everyday (food, love, human contact, tactile sensations, pain, smells, etc…), and his ultimate desire to leave his angelic status behind and become human.

The look of the film mirrors the pacing and the story in-so-much-as it is very lyrical and flowing.  The world of the angels is very stark, and contrasty, filmed entirely in a silky black and white.  Every crag and wrinkle of the people that they follow are visible, just as it would appear to an omnipresent, all-seeing angel.  The human world, however, is filmed in lush, saturated color.  Every joy, and mood, and taste, and experience of the human condition is on display visually, contrasted with the stark black and white world of absolutes.  The passion and experience that these visuals convey, represent the question that Damiel is wrestling with throughout the entire movie.  Is a life of passion, and emotion more satisfying than a life of eternal order, and knowledge, when each is separated from the other.  Is there a halfway point between the two worlds, and if so, do the benefits of one out-weigh the other.

I have to say that I didn’t really notice the music in this film, with the exception of the very obvious concert scene featuring Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and that isn’t necessarily bad, it just is.  Overall the film seemed very quiet and relied heavily on the weight of silence and the power of dialogue.  This means that you don’t get the standard emotional swell of music when you are supposed to feel happy, or sad, or angry.  Since you still feel these emotions, it is clear that despite the absence of these musical cues, the movie is strong enough to get across its points without them.

One other element that may seem familiar is the lead actor, Bruno Ganz.  If he seems familiar, it might be because he is a famous face in modern German cinema, most famously for playing Hitler in the film Downfall.  His power as an actor is obvious when you watch him on-screen.  For a film that is so visually striking as this one, when you find yourself trying to choose whether to look at the beautiful scenery or keeping your eye on the main actor, you know that you’re watching a dynamic performer.  The actor (or actress if you prefer) who plays Marion, Solveig Dommartin, imbues the role with a luminosity that makes you believe an angel might choose a mortal life.  Her wistful carefree nature provides the romance of the story, while ironically it is Ganz who provides the audience with necessary grounding and realism.

Wings of Desire is a slow-paced film, one that relishes the opportunity to show the characters, situations, and the world that it’s about, but it is very worth the time and energy spent watching it.  Wim Wender’s visual poem to the city of Berlin is a definite influence on indie movement in the films of the early nineties, and on into the 2000s and beyond.

Lettice Fairfax, an English actress, is the subject of this cabinet card. Her first stage appearance in America was at Daly’s Theater in New York City. She had a role in “Number Nine” in December of 1897. The reviewer in the New York Times wrote that she was “a pretty, fragile and very nervous” actress. He also labelled her the “new ingenue” and reported that she was pretty the way an English Gardner’s daughter is pretty. I guess that means that she was pretty in “the girl next door”  kind of way.  The photographer of this cabinet card was famed theatre photographer, B. J. Falk and the photograph  is copyrighted in 1898. The reverse of the cabinet card is stamped “Charles L Ritzmann” of Broadway, New York.

Richard Falk On Humane Governance: Towards a New Global Politics

Both works express, therefore, ideas originating in the late 1980s but refashioned in the mid-1990s. Thinking Theory is a refreshingly direct text, with excellent summaries and comparisons of realism and Rosenau’s own ‘postinternationalism’ or ‘turbulence’ paradigm, tested against the politics of the Antarctic, the condition of the United Nations and crises such as Cuba (1961) and Tiananmen Square. It offers undergraduates good advice on how to approach theory, but most teachers will find it limited because it fails to go beyond ‘turbulence’ as an alternative to realism.

The presentation of Rosenau’s case in simple textbook form makes it clear how much Turbulence was a transitional work, exciting in its time but less adequate even half a decade later when the contours of the new era are becoming clearer. As presented here, postinternationalism is more suggestive of an alternative than anything like a formed position. The notion of a ‘bifurcation of world politics into state- and multi-centric worlds’ seems to allow realism too much continuing purchase, and hardly delineates the interpenetration of state, corporate and civil-society politics in an emerging global society. On this evidence, Rosenau’s position is weak on the globalist concepts which are emerging as the most powerful alternative to traditional state-centric international theory.

If we are looking not just for a critique but for a conceptual and normative alternative, Falk has more to offer. On Humane Governance is informed by one of the most fully formed and morally powerful globalist conceptions available today. For Falk state-centric has given way to capital-driven geopolitics, still ‘from above’, and ‘the probable world of the early twenty-first century will be a variant of geogovernance that is appropriately regarded as “inhumane governance”‘. This report is an analysis of the many forms this is taking and an argument for an alternative ‘humane governance’, primarily but not exclusively or romantically ‘from below’. This will involve the ‘dramatic growth’ of transnational democracy and global civil society.

Falk’s strength is his conceptual and political clarity, which mostly shines through although the book is over-burdened with secondary issues and examples which, presumably, his committee left the author obliged to mention. There are few better expositions of the case that globalization and geogovernance, as such, are neither good or bad and what matters is the forms which these take. The report makes a sustained attack on the dominant military, political, social and economic forms of the new market-based global order, arguing correctly that a great opportunity to move in radically better directions was missed at the beginning of the current decade. Despite this setback, Falk formulates a ‘politics of bounded conviction’ which argues the possibility of a different kind of world future.

As a statement of optimism informed by a sharp recognition of realities it can hardly be bettered. I have however three sorts of reservations, all partly related to the book’s ‘report’ format. One is that in trying to cover everything it sometimes appears superficial and schematic. The second is that it uses language like ‘global apartheid’ and ‘North and South’ which oversimplify realities which Falk recognises to be complex. The third and most serious is that some of the key theoretical ideas are not fully worked out. The most important of these is the relation between state and governance at the world level. Similarly to Rosenau, Falk sees the state and states-system as being ‘gradually displaced’ by non-state forms of governance. He fails to recognise clearly the globalization of state power which represents the pooling as well as the subversion of sovereignty. We have not merely new forms of authority, as suggested by the ‘governance’ concept, but new forms of state in the political-military sense. Like the realists whom they criticise, both of these writers implicitly accept the equation of state with a system of nation-states. They don’t ask whether in a developing global society (the significance of which is demonstrated empirically rather than explored theoretically) new state forms may be coming into existence.

Falk therefore overstates the extent to which the new ‘governance’ is market- rather than state-centred. Humane governance will have to tame the emerging global state – the Western state backed by the legitimation framework of the UN – and recognising this theoretically would sharpen still further the case Falk presents. Nevertheless, On Humane Governance is an extraordinarily wide-ranging and systematic review of current dilemmas and the best current statement of radical globalism, which everyone should read.

Zum hundertjährigen Vereinsjubiläum haben sich die Verantwortlichen des BVB etwas ganz besonderes einfallen lassen: Gemeinsam mit dem Musikproduzenten und Komponisten Dieter Falk wurde eine Borussia-Hymne geschrieben die unter die Haut geht. Man merkt, dass Dieter Falk mit vollem Elan dabei ist, schließlich sind er und sein Sohn glühende BVB-Fans.

Doch der Reihe nach.

Am 20. Oktober stellte der BVB sein Konzept vor und rief dazu auf, sich für das Casting zu bewerben. Gesucht wurden: Ein/e Leadsänger/in (Solist/in) sowie 20 Sänger/innen für den Jahrhundertchor.

Anfang November war es dann soweit. Zunächst war ich ja skeptisch, was solch ein Casting angeht, als Laie hatte ich gleich diese ganzen Casting-Shows aus dem Fernsehen im Kopf. Doch meine Skepsis sollte glücklicherweise ganz und gar unbegründet sein. Die gefundenen Sängerinnen und Sänger scheinen wirklich sehr gut singen zu können, es scheint eine passende Mischung zu sein. Jordan Koop, der das Solisten-Casting für sich entschied, ist wirklich toll und da er scheinbar ein Borusse durch und durch ist, entsprechend engagiert beim singen Zudem war die Jury wohl recht fair und hat nicht den Dieter Bohlen “gemacht”. Dies wird u.a. in diesem Erfahrungsbericht (inkl. Video) deutlich, den einer der Casting-Teilnehmer verfasst hat.

Das komponierte Lied mit seinem eingängigen Refrain “Das Fußballherz schlägt hier. Schon seit hundert Jahren.” weiß kompositorisch als Fußballhymne zu überzeugen (zumindest den Ausschnitten nach zu urteilen, die in zwei Videos auf www.meinbvb.de/ veröffentlicht wurden) und scheint dem Anlass des hundertjährigen Vereinsjubiläums wirklich angemessen zu sein.

"Nobby" Dickel ("Der Held von Berlin") sowie eben Dieter Falk] über die Schwierigkeit der Entscheidung darüber, wer nun im Chor dabei ist und wer nicht:

Max Kaminski (der übrigens aus meiner Heimatstadt Herdecke kommt): “Es war deswegen schwierig, weil keine Graupen dabei waren. Wenn man es vom Fernsehen kennt, ist es natürlich so, dass ein paar Leute dabei sind, wo ich immer ein bisschen ablachen kann und es war nicht ein einziger dabei der richtig schlecht war… Hätte ich nicht mit gerechnet… Ich bin wirklich total begeistert.”

Dieter Falk: “Ich wäre froh, wenn wir bei Popstars teilweise solche Leute gehabt hätten. Ganz ehrlich. Ich war total überrascht von der Qualität wir haben quantitativ und qualitativ hier Sachen gefunden, das hätte ich nicht erwartet.”

Wie intensiv und anscheinend wirklich qualitativ gut das Casting war, zeigt sich bspw. daran, dass das Casting knapp sechst Stunden dauerte und es statt ursprünglich 20 gesuchten Chormitgliedern tatsächlich 41 wurden. Doch auch für diejenigen, die es nicht in den Jahrhundertchor schafften, hat es sich gelohnt: Denn einige Passagen der Hymne wurden von allen 300(!) Casting-Teilnehmern eingesungen, so dass niemand leer ausgehen musste.

Am hundertjährigen Geburtstag ist es dann soweit. Am 19. Dezember 2009 wird die Hymne vor dem Bundesligaspiel gegen den SC Freiburg live im Stadion uraufgeführt und Abends nochmals bei der Hundertjahre-Feier bzw. Show in der Westfalenhalle präsentiert.

Thank you for your interest in the upcoming fieldwork in the historic townsite of Falk, located 5 miles southeast of Eureka in the Headwaters Forest Reserve. Our first visit to the area is planned for Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7, 2009. We will be hiking approximately one mile on a flat, paved trail and then crossing a creek to access the study area. The creek is low right now and we have been removing our shoes to cross it. On Friday, we will be meeting at the Cultural Resources Facility Office (BSS 124) at 8:00 am or you can meet us at the Headwaters Forest Reserve parking area on Elk River Road at 8:45 am. To get to the parking area take the Elk River Road exit off Highway 101, at the south end of Eureka. Turn right onto Elk River Road and drive approximately six miles to the Reserve parking area.  Rain will cancel the fieldwork.

If you cannot make these first few days, don’t worry, fieldwork in Falk will be ongoing, every Friday and Saturday, for the next three months.

Falk, about 1890

I talked to Bill Rich yesterday, and the folks at HSU are getting ready to start digging at the historic town site of Falk.

In it’s heyday, Falk was a company mill town in the Elk River Valley with over 400 residents.   Unfortunately a drop in lumber demand in the late 1930s forced the mill’s closing and by the 1950s, the town was deserted (ish).  Squatters were living in the abandoned buildings and treasure seekers were looting the site.  These problems and concerns over legal liability prompted property owner Sierra Pacific Lumber Co to demolish the town in 1979.

In 1999, the Headwaters deal came through, and the  Bureau of Land Management took over the area. The BLM wants to use the townsite as an educational area with self-guided, and possibly guided,  tours.   Careful excavation of certain buildings and areas will  help folks learn more about how people lived in this isolated 19th century mill town and volunteers are welcome to help .

The crew will be working mostly Fridays and weekends so that they can get as many folks involved as possible and will focus on the dancehall and a small bachelor’s cabin site.

My copy of John H. Falk’s new book, Identity and the Museum Visitor Experience, arrived today and I can’t get enough of it already! The purpose of this book, according to Falk, is to provide a model that museums can use to better understand and support the visitor experience. He argues that his new model (which I have not made it to yet but soon!) will require an immense amount of change within the current structure of how museums see themselves, their visitors, and their role in society. You can probably understand why I am loving this book already, especially after my recent post in which I discuss what I believe is a much needed revolutionizing of our art museums, away from the current exhibition structure and towards an institution that resembles a modern day public forum.

I have recently come across Colleen Dilenschneider’s blog, Know Your Own Bone, and am loving what this bright and ambitious fellow museo and grad student has suggested for ways she believes museums can connect with their communities. Transforming out museums into community-based centers of creativity and dialogue, Colleen writes, “lies in museums positioning themselves as cultural centers and integral aspects of the local/regional community.” Yes, yes, and yes. …oder: Sonnenbrand und unterkühlt!

Ich hatte mich also doch entschlossen aufs Blackfield zu gehen… Wortwörtlich sogar, denn die Location ist zu Fuß ca. 30 Minuten von mir entfernt, also ganz praktisch, weil ich mich weder um Mitfahrgelegenheit noch Bus/Bahn etc. kümmern musste. Nur blöd, dass man nirgendwo Alkohol einlagern konnte, hab also die beiden Flaschen Lambrusco einfach in der Schlange vorm Eingang verteilt. Bis ich allerdings den richtigen Eingang und mein Grüppchen gefunden hatte, verstrich einige Zeit mit plötzlichem Wokenbruch, Regen und Hagel. Und ganz großartig, noch vor ich das Gelände betrat waren meine Higheels voller Matsch und der Reißverschluss meiner Corsage kaputt, was man aber später wieder reparieren konnte. 

Wir taperten also nun am ersten Tag des Blackfield Festivals durch den Regen und drapierten uns auf die Sitzreihen des riesigen Amphitheaters. Nach schier endloser Regenzeit begann die unsägliche Hitze… Man fühlte sich nehzu wie in einem Kochtopf umhüllt mit Wasser, denn der Regen verdampfte förmlich vor den Augen. Okay, das ist jetzt leicht übertrieben, aber so fühlte es sich zumindest an. Dieser Zustand von Wetter begleitete uns die ganzen beiden Tage lang, man konnte sich also nicht wirklich entscheiden, ob man lieber verbrannte oder erfror. Genau diese Stimmung war auch im zahlreich erschienen Publikum bei den jeweiligen Bands zu beobachten. Viele standen eher unschlüssig und unmotiviert herum. Bis auf die “Cyber-Ecke”, die zu jedem elektronischem Sound wild zu tanzen begann. War schön bunt die Ecke, ich hätte mich gern zwischen den Neonfarben eingereiht. ^.^ 

Meine persönlichen musikalischen Highlights waren VNV Nation, IAMX, Suicide Commando und ASP.

VNV Nation wollte ich immer schon mal live sehen und es war wirklich überwältigend, als das gesamte Publikum sich wie aus dem Schlaf gerissen von den Rängen erhob und mitsang, feierte und tanzte. Ich habe mich auch dazu entschlossen zu tanzen, auf Socken, da die Reißverschlüsse meiner Hioghheels den Geist aufgegeben haten. Ein definitives Reißverschluss-Fail am ersten Tag für mich… aber die Laune lass ich mir ja dann nicht vermiesen und die pink geringelten Socken passten auch super zum neuen pinken Tüll/Organza-Rock, den mir Susi frisch genäht hatte. ^.^

Von IAMX war ich sehr überrascht, da ich dieses Band bis dato nicht kannte. Ein sehr bizarres Kunstwerk “from out of space”, wie es schien mit wahrlich verrückten Charakteren auf der Bühne. Man hat absolut gemerkt, wieviel Spaß sie bei ihrem Auftritt hatten und das hat mich letzendlich auch noch mehr überzeugt, sodass ich versucht habe unten in der Menge vor der Bühne ein bisschen mit zu tanzen. Dort war allerdings arg wenig Bewegungsfreiheit…

Als ich hörte, dass Suicide Commando ihren Auftritt haben werden, war natürlich sofort klar: Mittanzen!! Ab in die Masse!! Ich bin mit Nana die Ränge runtergestiefelt und gesellte mich mit ihr in die Cyberecke, wo ich mit meinem Wasserdämon-Tüll-Outfit (das Teil von Halloween nur mit wieder reparierter Corsage drüber) irgendwie nicht reinpasste. Dabei musste ich feststellen, dass ich mich mit Boots mal so gar nicht bewegen kann, ich bin´s eben gewohnt mit Heels auf der Tanzfläche zu stehen. Nach wenigen Liedern hab ich dann auch aufgegeben, damit ich mich nicht komplett lächerlich machen musste und da waren ja auch noch die vielen Füße und Ellebögen, die mir doch gehörigen Respekt einflößten. Zum Auftritt der Band kann ich gar nicht viel sagen, da ich dort unten nicht viel mitbekommen habe, aber ein paar Videos habe ich zur Untermalung auch aufgenommen. Dazu gleich.

Den absolut großartigsten Auftritt brachten als letzte Band des Festivals ASP. Ich muss zugeben, ich mag nur wenige Lieder dieser Band, aber der Auftritt war wirklich gekonnt: Sehr schöne Lichteffekte, ein mitsingendes Publikum, ein echt super freundlicher Sänger, der sich bei allen Anwesenden oft bedankte und man dachte, er würde gleich in Tränen ausbrechen vor Freude, viele Zugaben und zum Schluss der Knaller. Die Band ging von der Bühne und erst fing es langsam an, dann breitete es sich aus über das komplette Amphitheater und jeder der 6000 Zuschauer schrie mit “WIR WOLLEN BRENNEN, WIR WOLLEN BRENNEN…!” und ASP kam wieder auf die Bühne und es ertönte die Melodie von ihrem Song “Ich will brennen”, den ich btw echt klasse finde und sehr oft höre, und alle sangen mit, eine Stimmung, die den Himmel in Flammen stecken wollte und auf der Bühne schossen Feuerfontainen in die Höhe. Wow! Nach diesem Stück spielten ASP noch ein Letztes “Biotopia”, ein eher seichtes Stück, zur Beruhigung und zum Abschied und ganz am Ende brannte der Himmel wirklich, denn es wurden noch als die letzten Töne erklungen Raketen gezündet und man konnte sich ein pyrotechnisches Spektakel anschauen. Wirklich sehr beeindruckend!!

Ich könnte noch viel mehr berichten, was sich alles sonst noch auf dem Festival ereignet hat, aber das würde dann wieder so ein Monster-Artikel werden. xD Deshalb habe ich zu guter Letzt noch ein paar Fotos. Videos vom Blackfielfestival kann man sich auf meinem Youtubeaccount anschauen. HIER

Leider war nach Suicide Commando dann auch meine 2GB Speicherkarte voll, was mich natürlich echt geärgert hat, aber im Netz findet man ja auch noch mehr Bildmaterial. ^.^

Und nachdem ich auf flickr 1759 results durchsucht habe, bin ich dann auch noch fündig geworden: Sora + Nana von inten und Falki. ^.^

Today was Julien’s biggest day yet as he covered an insane 110 miles!

At the start of the day Julien was not intending to go quite as far as this but he discovered that the distance between campsites in Sweden is very large!

Julien started out this morning by cycling on a dual carriageway alongside cars and trucks – not a nice start to the day.

He stopped at Kinna and asked one of the locals if it was ok for him to be cycling along what was essentially a motorway.

He was told that cyclists often use the road and sure enough later on he saw a little old lady cycling along the same route!

When he made to Boras Julien stopped in for lunch at a Swedish Chinese restaurant that  wasn’t too great!

Julien realised that the nearest campsite to Boras was only another 10 miles away. As he felt he had more energy in him he decided to push further on past Herrljunga and head towards the next campsite another 50 miles away.

Unsurprisingly he got very worn out along the way but was committed to going the full distance to get to the campsite, have a shower and have somewhere decent to stay for the night.

When he made it to Falkoping Julien was so tired he had to get off his bike and walk it along for the next few miles.

A friendly local saw that Julien was struggling a bit and gave him directions to the campsite and money for a shower – I guess Julien did not smell too great at this point!

Julien is hoping for a smaller day tomorrow but is still aiming to cover around 70 miles.
