Notes: The best training run of the season today. We added Skoli to the team. She is an 8 year old Siberian that we are trying out to add a little depth to the team. All the Deadwood pups did really well. Lots of mud puddles to run though. Great fun!

Friends of Hospice Ottawa’s fall Volunteer Training Program will begin on September 21st, and even though it’s still two months away, it’s never too early to start thinking about giving back. Interviews for prospective volunteers have already begun, so if you’re interested in the possibility of signing-up for the training program, contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Diane Jodouin, at 613-591-6002 ext. 25 to schedule an interview.

The Volunteer Training Program gives volunteers a thorough idea of what hospice palliative care is about and a detailed look inside Friends of Hospice Ottawa and our programs/services. The role of a hospice volunteer is clearly defined and participants will learn how to effectively offer emotional support, for example, by using active listening techniques, showing empathy rather than sympathy, etc. Another responsibility of a hospice volunteer is to provide the client with small comfort measures such as hand massages, changing their position in bed, wetting their mouth or simply being present while they try to rest. You’re there to listen to them and support them through their end-of-life journey, and they can choose how they would like to spend their time with you. This could mean playing cards, making a scrapbook of their past memories, going for a walk or watching television. Knowing that you’re there for them is often comfort enough, and the client will open up to you when they’re ready to talk. The bond between a client and a volunteer grows to become very strong, which is why volunteers are one of the most important and special people involved in hospice palliative care.

The Volunteer Training Program welcomes up to 25 participants, creating a safe and trusting environment for everyone involved. This gives you the opportunity to get to know your fellow peers so that you feel supported during and after your training. Diane uses an interactive training approach through in-class exercises, group discussions, small group activities, guest speakers and much more. A different module is taught each week to help you get comfortable in your role as volunteer and explore each area of our organization. At the end of the program you get to decide what area of Friends of Hospice Ottawa suits you best, whether it’s in-home support, day hospice, transportation, special event planning, office support or one of our many volunteer committees.

Once again, the Volunteer Training Program starts on September 21st and takes place every Wednesday from 3PM-6PM until November 23rd (10 weeks). If you have any questions about the Volunteer Training Program or about Friends of Hospice Ottawa, we welcome you to attend one of our Information Sessions on July 26th or August 18th to learn more about our organization. The Information Sessions will be held from 7-8PM at our office in Kanata, located at 555 Legget Drive, Tower A, Suite 109. We hope to see you there!

It’s that time of the year again when your schedule, mindset and attitude will change from the

It’s that time of the year again when your schedule, mindset and attitude will change from the summertime when you had so much downtime to now with limited bandwidth as school gets back in full swing. And it’s important as a student athlete to make a smooth transition so you don’t lose a step on (and off) the court.

Here are 9 key strategies on how to maximize your time and be prepare yourself for the season. These next 3 months are so important and will determine the success of your winter year.

9 keys

1) Get yourself into a routine – find and develop a schedule that you are comfortable with. Don’t overload your schedule and overwhelm yourself. Maximize your time for academics, training and even if you have a part-time job.

2) Get in basketball shape. Ahhh getting in shape stinks! But it’s necessary…push yourself these next 3 months and really increase your cardio going into November. You don’t want to be out of shape when practice begins…this hurts your shot, decision making and everything else about your game. When the 4th quarter hits, that’s when you need to be at your best….you can’t be when you are winded.

3) Stay on top of your academics – Obviously very important no matter what the time of the year is, but I have seen too many athletes academically ineligible before the season even starts. Don’t let this be you.

4) Find time to rest (mentally and physically) – this time of year can be a struggle with everything that is going on. Know when to rest and when to be resilient…there’s a fine-line.

5) Always have a ride – This might sound funny but if you don’t have a drivers license or access to a vehicle you need a ride from place to place. If the weight room is on the opposite side of town you’ll need a ride. Plan ahead and make sure you get transportation.

6) Grab a motivational partner – A great idea from 3-point member Silas Thompson! We are implementing each member to have a motivational partner for accountability and responsibility matters. Grab someone like-minded and as passionate as you and workout together this Fall. Push and challenge each other to become better….this is a great idea from Silas!

7) Track your success – Record your daily results and always be aware of where you stand. This provides motivation and confidence.

8) Meeting with your coach – We forget that we can always schedule a meeting with our coach. Please take advantage of this…Ask good questions like: What should I be working on the most this fall? Do you have a playbook I can study to learn all the plays (offensively and defensively)? This proves to your coach how serious you are and also shows leadership…Lastly, it’s a great step to building a quality relationship with your coach.

9) Less AAU and more personal development focus – I know I know, we all love to play AAU but Fall isn’t the best time for it. This time should be dedicated to you and your personal development as well as your high school team. Grab your teammates and get better this fall. AAU will be there in the summer for ya.

Sheesh! It’s already November and I haven’t yet posted anything about running our dogs.

Sheesh! It’s already November and I haven’t yet posted anything about running our dogs. What’s the matter with me?

Well, part of it is that Jenn and I had decided in the late summer that we were going to downsize some of our animals and try to get some work done on our house. We only have three chickens left; the others were sold, and we only have one goat – the infamous Ty. That leaves the dogs.

Originally, we were going to not focus on racing this year. Instead, we were going to have fun runs – like camping, icefishing and daytrips – with the dogs, but when a friend, after hearing our plan, asked if he could use our dogs to run a race this winter we felt it to be an all-round benefitial idea. He could help train and condition the dogs, the dogs would get out on runs, and we would not feel guilty about not running our dogs as much this winter.

This is our string of dogs that we are training this year.

Then, Jenn came up with the idea that we were going to try a different method of training. She’d heard about this eleven-day cycle that is used by some mushers who do races similar to ours. Basically, the eleven days are broken down like this:

Day one: long, slow distance run. We try to keep the dogs between five and seven miles per hour for an hour.

Day two: rest

Day three: rest

Day four: another long, slow distance run.

Day five: rest

Day six: rest

Day seven: Speed run. We keep the dogs running at between 14 and 16 miles per hour. We do this for four miles.

Day eight: speed run.

Day nine: speed run.

Day ten: rest

Day eleven: rest.

When the next cycle starts up, the distance is increased by a mile and the time spent running the long, slow runs is increased by half an hour. In theory, we are working two different muscle groups on each different part of our training and we are giving plenty of rest for recovery and muscle building. So far, we are really pleased with what we have been seeing. Another nice thing about this method of training is that we have a concrete plan: in years past, I would just try to get out as much as I could with the dogs and, as our past racing track record shows, I was evidently not allowing the dogs’ potentials to be reached.

I wish this trail was longer. We can only use it for runs up to eight miles or so, but it’s so nice to run on. It’s a seldom-used concession road that only really sees traffic during hunting season. We use a trail that comes off of it and goes four miles into a cut-block to a nice turn-around so that we don’t have to manually turn the team around on the road.

So, with the help of James, our friend, we are having a great season so far and the dogs are looking every bit the honest dogs we know them to be.

This is the part of the trail that goes through the cut-block. It is still nice and wide, well packed and enjoyable to run.

The end of our second 4-mile speed run. The dogs finished looking really strong, I thought. James is driving and Hunter’s friend, Emily, is riding with us. She was covered in mud and had a great time.
