Tonight The Swell Season starts kicks off their US tour with a performance in Seattle. The Swell Season are Glen Hansard (from the Irish band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist), both are known for their performance in Once, the 2007 music film from Ireland. The two were a couple and now they’re not but they’re still making beautiful music together.

Falling Slowly is one of those tunes you’ll hum for hours after you’ve heard it, mainly because of the repetitive melody, but also because it’s one of those “I could’ve written that” type of tunes. Want to learn it? Scroll down a bit on this page – Mario Ajero has a podcast lesson for you.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are an exquisite pair.  The two gathered public acclaim with their glowing performance in 2007’s indie Irish film musical Once.  Now performing regularly and internationally as The Swell Season, Hansard and Irglova exude lyrical and melodic luminosity.

With their contrasting vocal presences, The Swell Season’s new album Strict Joy alternates between a singularly desperate tone, like dashing through an airport after a woman because you just can’t lose her again, and a sweeping, magnetic quality, like a current oh-so-gently drifting you farther and farther away from land.  Together, their music is religious in same way as that long stretch in Central Park where the trees line either side and their branches meet creating a canopy of glorious green filtered light, and sad like finishing your favorite book for the fourteenth time.

Glen Hansard is reminiscent of his fellow Irishman Damien Rice with his ragged, pleading, passionate vocals, and Czech native Marketa Irglova’s hushed, delicate voice harmonizes nobly with Hansard’s like fine wine and cheese or scotch and a foreign cigar.

A few of Strict Joy’s standout tracks are “Low Rising,” with its raw soulfulness and smooth acoustics; “Feeling the Pull,” a galloping melody made memorable by its imperfect urgency and blazing instrumentation; “In These Arms,” with its subtle and old-world romantic lyrics like, “I quit my rambling and came home,/because maybe I was born to hold you in these arms;” Irglova’s solo piece, “Fantasy Man,” lilting and poetic, with lyrics like, “In the station, you were standing/Not knowing what you want,/And the secrets that we’re defending/Have become our only bond;” the ballad “I Have Loved You Wrong,” natural and tender, heart-wrenching and quiet; and “Back Broke,” which is slightly haunting with its minor tones and poignant simplicity.

Hansard and Irglova once enchanted us with their sweet harmonies on “Falling Slowly,” crooning together about melancholy hope and lovely possibility.  I still know those words by heart: “Take this sinking boat and point it home;/We’ve still got time./Raise your hopeful voice; you have a choice/You’ll make it now.”  I am happy to report that The Swell Season is still acoustic emotion at its very best.  Glen and Mar, as their fans have affectionately come to call them, radiate warmth and smoldering artistic intellect.  Strict Joy is an ideal soundtrack for a November afternoon.  Just relax and let the current pull you under.

Şi pentru că veţi fi curioşi de film şi îl veţi downloada cu siguranţă, vizionare placută.

Sometimes all you can do is whine.

You know how you sometimes see an event unfold before you in slow motion? Like your glass of red wine falling through mid-air toward your white carpet? (Or worse, your friend’s white carpet?) That’s what happened to me this morning but, sadly, no wine was involved.

I had just climbed the stairs from the subway platform and was headed for the exit turnstile.

A young woman in front of me carrying a tote bag with “Jamaica” spelled out in tiny shells, walked through the turnstile and lost hold of her newspaper. (This is the slow motion part.) Instead of falling at her feet where she could pick it up herself, it tumbled over the partition, just out of her reach.

She stood and stared at it, wanting it back but perhaps not enough to cough up another ticket to walk through and get it.

It landed on my side of the gate, so picking it up and handing it to her was a GDAD no-brainer. She smiled and thanked me, though – probably because by the time I’d gotten to it, about four people had walked over it in a rush-hour stampede to work.

And to be honest, if it weren’t for these past 440 days, I probably would have been one of them….

The only child of actress Annette Ekblom and actor Alun Lewis, Amelia Warner was born on June 4, 1982, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England. Because her parents seperated when she was very young, Amelia stayed with her mother. They moved to Ladbroke Grove when she was six years old. Amelia studied at the Royal Masonic School for Girls and then, when she was sixteen, at the College of Fine Arts in London. She also studied History of Art at Goldsmith’s College in London.

She was disovered by an agent when she and her friends performed a play in Covent Garden. It was because of this that she earned a place in the London Royal Court Theatre’s Youth program. Although she was encouraged to pursue an education over an acting career, Amelia made her television debut on the program “Kavanagh Q.C.” and went on to snag a couple more television roles. It wasn’t until the BBC adaption of Lorna Doone, in which Amelia played the title character, that a broader audience would start to take notice. She has since appeared in more films: alongside Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix Quills, briefly in Mansfield Park, Nine Lives with Paris Hilton, to name a few. In spite of her acting career, Amelia still managed to acquire decent grades.

From July to November 2001, Amelia was married to Irish actor, Colin Farrell.

Amelia was recently seen in the film, The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, which came out October, 2007. In 2008, she will be seen starring in The Echo.

Ich freu mich schon auf “The Swell Season” in der Passionskirche in Berlin. Das Konzert findet nun im Februar 2010 statt und ich bin extremer fan von Glen Hansard und Marketa Irglova.

Nas ruas de Dublin, uma história de amor entre um músico irlandês e uma imigrante tcheca.

Em Apenas Uma Vez (Once, 2006), Guy (Glen Hansard) é um artista de rua que de dia toca covers por alguns Euros e a noite músicas próprias por alguns centavos. Girl (Markéta Irglová) é uma imigrante que vende rosas na rua em que Guy trabalha. Quando os dois se conhecem a música forma um elo entre eles. Guy e Girl dividem os amores que não deram certos e as dificuldades enfrentadas em suas vidas. Os dois, seguros do que querem, começam a escrever e ensaiar músicas para gravar um disco.

Apenas Uma Vez, meio que tem formato de documentário e parece com uma apresentação em um pequeno bar e você está logo na primeira fila.  O orçamento utilizado foi baixissimo, perto das produção de hollywood, com o filme gravado em apenas 17 dias. Os protagonistas são na verdade ambos músicos, Glen toca na banda The Frames e Markéta é compositora, mas fazem um excelente trabalho de atuação. A ligação entre os dois é perfeita. E o destaque do filme com certeza é a trilha sonora. Tanto é que a canção “Falling Slowly” ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Canção Original. Você termina de assistir o filme mas as músicas continuam na cabeça.

We watched “Once” in school today, for music class. I could not understand half the things the actors were saying. It was hard to tell the difference between what was Czech and what was English in the film.

The cinematography was horrible. It looked like something from a reality TV show. The weirdest, most awkward fisheye angles were there the whole time. And please, if you’re going to make a film, at least have the decency to buy a tripod.

The music, however, was a different story. While it was hard to understand the lyrics of the song because the characters were Irish (or some other European countryman), the music was very beautifully composed. Although at first, I didn’t find it so striking, “Falling Slowly” was really a wonderful piece. Whether it deserved the 2006 Oscar for Best Original Song, however, I don’t know.

Kris Allen’s version of the song is THE version you should listen to. It’s so moving, so touching, and so well sung. It’s catchy, too.

Så har familjen åkt på sin månadslånga semester och jag är tillbaka i högteknologins värld då min brors dator hamnat i mina svettiga labbar under tiden! Min nya kyl/frys är så vacker, anlände igår och nu ser plötsligt mina köksluckor dassiga ut i jämförelse med dess krispvita yta…dags att måla kanske? Handlade upp tusen jävla kronor på matvaror igår och har idag varit präktig och gjort storkok av bolognese som jag frusit in i portionsstorlek. Det ni, vuxenpoäng eller vad? haha

Någon hade kapat min tvättid idag igen, jävla fittgrannar. Dom förvandlar mig till någon som skriver surkärringslappar men idag motstod jag lusten att plita ner mina innersta känslor för deras imbecilla hjärnor. Var aningen uppretad redan innan, borde det inte införas obligatorisk ljudisolering i alla lägenhetshus? Hear, hear! jag är trött på att höra knarrande sängar, skrik av vällust, fjantiga tjejröster från grannens senaste byten, dålig musik på nattklubbsvolym mitt i natten och efterfester. Bort med er! Man kan ju tycka att den mest rimliga lösningen för mig vore att flytta ut i en bunker i skogen men ack ne! ska jag behöva leva i exil för att hela världen är idioter? För att flytta ut i skogen skulle jag behöva skaffa världens mest avacerade larm, bygga en jävla vallgrav med hungriga rovdjur i, skaffa ett gäng aggressiva gäss, lära mig använda kpist, eldkastare och handeldsvapen, föda upp några arga dobermanhundar som patrullerar stugan, installera fällor á la Ensam Hemma, sova med ett öga öppet och få extremt dyra elräkningar till följd av det enorma ljusnät jag skulle få sätta upp för att hålla området ljust 24h/dygn i en 2km radie. Så nej, det är inte värt det.

Hey peoples que acessam aqui o blog…Hoje quero divulgar uma banda que tocou na festa junina la do Influx (Uma escola de ingles  pra quem não sabe) e que eu achei realmente boa.Na verdade eu fui falar com um dos integrantes da banda e ele disse que não era uma banda, mas sim só um grupo de friends que se juntaram pra tocar na festa…Whatever, eu acehi massa e vou postar aqui sendo ou não uma banda…Com vocês Survivors(muito original o nome xD) :
