Today at work, I was able to observe for a while, a man standing outside the doors of the mall (the temple of consumtion). In our town there is a magazine that’s made with the purpose of helping those who have a hard time getting their life together for different reasons. The articles are about social issues, and also about these people, in an effort to help people see the individuals behind the problem. 
 Half of the price goes to the seller, and the rest goes to make the magazine.

I think this is one of those genius win-win ideas that make our world a little better. The person selling is able to work and get paid, while also getting to talk to people and at least lower some of the walls we often seem to raise when people don’t fit into our frame of mind. The people reading the articles get a nuanced picture of what life is really like on the rougher side, and hopefully they gain some understanding and compassion for their neighbours.

This is already enough to make me very hopeful about the state of our community, but my spirit was lifted even further today as I stood there watching this salesman. In the brief period I observed him, several people bought the magazine, but more importantly, there were also people stopping just to chat and say hello for a second. That’s just wonderful!

The big risk for these people is to lead an isolated life in the shadows, being ignored by others and thus feeling like they don’t exist. Just a nod and a hello is actually enough to show this person that he exists and that I respect him. (See also the earlier post “By this roadside”)
 And most of all, it confirms his worth as a human regardless of his circumstances, and that’s worth more than money in my book.

There’s nothing like a good fall to cheer me up.  This time at poor Jenny’s expense nonetheless.  Or actually I think she has adopted a new stage name, after taking a moment to Google the facts I return to you with “Lola.”  According to one site that came up in the Google earch description for “Jennifer Lopez new name” (which turned up to be a blank dead end link) Jennifer Lopez denies claiming a new name.  So I’m a little unclear as of now…either way the video gave me a good laugh lol.  In a “Damn that’s so shitty I’m embarrassed for them” kind of way.  I mean that’s the bitter-sweetness of falling isn’t it?  The embarrassing faces you make and movements you make while in that split second of not being in control of your body, or in J.Lo/Lola/Jennifer Lopez/whateverhernamereallyis’s case that split second of falling smack on that infamous ass of hers.  In front of thousands of people in the audience, and millions of people watching live nonetheless!  I wonder if she chewed anyone’s ass out about the floor being slippery or something…unless maybe it was just that her heels didn’t have the right traction or something…lol either way that sucks.  But you know what?  Infinity million kudos for that quick recovery!  Either way, I still love her and that big ole derriere.

Falls At Work – Are They On The Rise?

Despite constant warnings and awareness campaigns, workers
are still suffering injuries at work after falls from
heights. In fact, falls from heights constitute the largest
number of work-related serious injuries every year. The
latest incident involved a man falling from the first floor
of a building he was working on. The man suffered
life-threatening injuries as a result.

The man was using a power saw at an industrial estate in
Staffordshire, when he fell through the side of the
building in October last year. An investigation showed that
the walls of the building had been removed and there was an
inadequately positioned steel girder around the sides. This
was the only measure of protection offered and the Health
and Safety inspector called to the scene noted that
although the steel girder had been placed around the sides
of the building, there were still substantial gaps. He also
stated in his report that there was a “significant risk”
that other workers could have also fallen four metres to
the ground below.

Only four metres. That’s all it took to put a worker in
hospital with serious injuries. When you also consider that
the worker was using a power saw at the time, you can
immediately see that the risks were considerable. The
company involved pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1)
of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and were fined
£8,000 and ordered to pay costs of £6,000. And
all for the sake of neglecting to make sure that an open
area at height was adequately protected.

The assumption that working at a height of anything below
five metres does not constitute a safety issue is a
fallacy. Falling from height is the most common cause of
workplace deaths. In 2007/08, 58 people died and nearly
3700 were seriously injured as a result of falling from
height while at work. Approximately 75% of serious injuries
resulted from people falling from below head height. These
statistics from the HSE show that the common misconception
that falls from height means plummeting from the top of
tall buildings isn’t an accurate appraisal of the real
situation. The key factor to remember in any case of an
accident at work is the employer’s duty of care to ensure
that the health, safety and welfare of every employee is
considered and action is taken to prevent such accidents
from occurring. Anyone working at height is at risk, and
those risks must be assessed and reduced in any way
possible. Putting a single steel girder around an open wall
and leaving large gaps that people can fall through is a
failure in that duty of care, and the courts agreed.

One of the most common types of injury compensation claims
is brought as a result of individuals having accidents at
work – mainly trips, falls and slips. Anyone working at
height should be adequately protected against such falls,
and if the employer fails in that duty of care and an
accident is the result, then the victim has every right to
be compensated for their injuries. When you consider not
only the immediate effects of the accident but the
potential loss of earnings through being unable to work for
some time afterwards, then you can understand how important
it is to pursue a claim. However, some people feel ‘guilty’
at pursuing a compensation claim against their employer,
worried that it may affect their position within the
company or even cause the company financial difficulties.
But that should never be the case as pursuing a claim also
highlights failings on the part of the employer and could
help to protect others from suffering the same fate. You
should never be afraid to pursue a legitimate claim for
injuries sustained while working at height.

Adam Lambert had his debut performance earlier this evening at the AMA’s with his first single, “For Your Entertainment.” The performance featured many surprises from kisses to even Lambert falling on stage. Although the performance featured a Lambert and a male kiss, the kiss was censored in the West Coast.

When my wife was in high school she won back-to-back-to-back championships with her gymnastics team. In the same way that this feat was both unthinkable and awesome, my 3-in-a-row SaS creates a similar sentiment. Enjoy.

I started listening to Ben Kweller the same way I listen to any new music. My little sister tells me too. What can I say? She knows what I like (or should like). In this week of Thanksgiving, I give thanks to her and her ability to consistently tell me what music I like. (thanks Makrai!)

Sejak 3 minggu lepas; aku mengalami satu situasi di mana aku dapat rasakan seolah jantung aku kena squeeze lepas tu dapat aku rasa deruan darah mengalir di bahagian dada. Ianya seperti lu orang squeeze air kotak yang masih penuh dan deruan air meluru keluar dari straw; lebih kurang gitulah. Tak sakit cuma rasa semacam adrenalin rush ke apa tu; lu orang pernah tak masa tido bermimpi lu orang jatuh dari tempat tinggi? kira macam gitulah rasanya.

Dalam sehari tak kurang 5 kali aku rasa macam jantung aku kena squeeze untuk beberapa saat lepas tu dapat aku rasakan deruan darah yang mengalir melalui salur darah… serius. Selalunya terjadi masa aku dalam keadaan tenang; tengah duduk lepak layan movie ka TV series ka, masa baring mau tido ka; secara amnya bila aku dalam keadaan tenang benda tu akan terjadi… serius… tak sakit bila itu berlaku. Kepada pakar jantung yang layan blog meraban aku ni; apakah maknanya itu? Aku ada problem jantung ka? Keyword di sini aku tak rasa sakit bila itu berlaku, serius. Aku tau macam mana rasa sakit di dada sekitar area penempatan jantung; 3 tahun lepas aku pernah alami satu situasi di mana ada masa bila aku tarik nafas; seolah-olah rasa macam kena tusuk seribu jarum kat dada aku ni, masa tu aku pikir kalau aku terus tarik napas gerenti jantung aku stop sebab aku dapat rasa keperitan yang menggila; jantung aku seolah bagi signal ke otak…

“kalau mamat ni tarik lagi napas gerenti aku(jantung) akan stop berdenyut. Lu(otak) suruh mamat ni take it easy”

So beberapa saat kemudian otak menghantar signal supaya berhenti dari menarik napas untuk seketika; aku pun slowly breathing. Macam mana rasanya ketika tu? Aku tak boleh gerak; kalau aku gerak, jantung aku rasa macam nak pecah.. serius. Semua tu berlaku dalam range masa 5 saat hingga seminit.

Itu 3 tahun lepas. Tapi sekarang lain pulak berlaku sejak 3 minggu lepas; aku rasa jantung aku seolah kena squeeze untuk beberapa saat di susuli deruan darah mengalir di salur-salur darah di bahagian area dada yang aku dapat rasa aliran tu beb… serius. Tak sakit cuma tu lah macam aku kata awal tadi rasanya seolah jika  masa tido lu orang pernah bermimpi lu orang jatuh dari tempat tinggi; macam tu lah aku rasa setiap kali kejadian jantung aku seolah kena squeeze beberapa saat tu berlaku.

write. so right it will be. here i sit trying to convince myself of why it’s best. if i never see your face again, i will never have to forget you again. perhaps that is for the best. my heart protests but soon the resistance will be quelled and no more will it stir. stupidity overrides reason, for whatever reason. it’s august all over again.

think leaving would be best. so i can stop this wandering of the mind. it will not be tamed. neither will my heart. so softly it waits for an absolution that will never come. for that is a lesson it will stubbornly unlearn time and again. for people who leave an indelible mark. thank you. at least i know my heart still works.
