Russian theorist Viktor Shklovsky’s theory of defamiliarization is applied to both art and literature. Make art object “unfamiliar” or “the making strange of everyday events and objects so that they appear to us in a new light” (Critical Theory: A Graphic Guide by Stuart Sim and Borin Van Loon p. 55). In other words, as artists, it’s our job to make things difficult, to reject the automatic response, make viewers work and participate so they can prolong the aesthetic experience and develop a deeper perception. The parallel in literature is Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre and alienation effect.

http://www.planetalondrina.com.br

Vale a pena!

Diumenge anàrem a dinar a s’Hortella den Cotanet.

Probably one of the aprons that would get the dirtiest of all is a cobbler apron. We have all seen cobblers behind their counters at the local shopping centre, hammering, gluing and mending shoes. I would imagine that the reason the cobblers apron gets so dirty is because of all the shoe polish that has to be applied so often to so many repaired pairs of shoes.

Cobblers perform a multitude of different services for their clients, from re-heeling shoes, to putting patches on the soles or indeed re-soling shoes, fixing up scratches and rips to the leather, taking off parts of the shoes, re-stitching, etc. Often the cobbler these days will multi-task and do engravings and key cutting too. However these jobs are quite dirty jobs as well so at the end of the day, the cobbler will leave his kiosk much the worse for wear and quite dirty!

Of all the jobs that he does though, the dirtiest would be when he finishes off his chores by cleaning the shoes, rubbing them into a revolving brush that is covered in black shoe polish. This would get on their hands and would leave residue all over the front of them and their apron.

His apron would also need pockets to handle all the different types of tacks, small heels, patches, etc. that he would use during the course of mending shoes and cutting keys. This is one job that involves a lot of small spare parts and you need somewhere to place things where they will not get muddled up with everything else!

I know from my own personal experience on the domestic front that shoe polish is very difficult to remove from fabric so it is another of life’s mysteries as to why cobbler’s aprons always tend to be white! Black would be better surely?

Cheaper, quicker, familiar. A mantra, especially in these tougher economic times is becoming more an

Cheaper, quicker, familiar. A mantra, especially in these tougher economic times is becoming more and more important as people’s time and money becomes more stretched thin.

Perhaps that is, in part why, one of my favorite little local chains went out of business recently. It is sad too, this little shop made some amazing Mexican food, considering, it is, of course, in New York City. They put a nice spin on it though, something that reflected the wonderful personality of the city both in the food and the staff.

There is now another national Mexican fast-food chain near where this legacy once stood. It serves up a homogenized, assembly line prepared, generically presented version of something claiming to be (but hardly) authentic for a few pennies less and maybe a few paces faster. But at what cost really?

In this case the cost was a great local dive being sacrificed to the American way, I suppose. Why try something new, when one can have something familiar? Yeah, sure, it is consistent. It has to be. It’s all made exactly the same from Seattle to Santa Fe and presented with that same stoic indifference meant to get you out the door quicker than you can fart up a storm from your refriend beans side dish.

Don’t get me wrong. I have been to mom-and-pop restaurants where the food was atrocious and the service was underwhelming bordering obnoxious… just like I had some great meals and service at major chains.

For me though, it is more than just the comparison of the actual food and service from individual place to place. It is the concept behind cross-country corporate identities versus those local specialties.

A more poignant example for food is pizza. The tri-state is a pizza mecca. A NY slice is a thing of beauty that no matter how hard any chain will try, they will never recreate. No, it’s not just that it is something in the water as the locals joke. It is because a Bergen County pie and a Brooklyn pie are, although related, two completely different animals. Many a time in towns in North Jersey I lived in, some big name mass-manufactured pizza pusher comes along. Their life fortunately is short lived. The boom of business quickly fizzles out because pizza is indeed a way of life here and their ‘what’s good in Kentucky is good in North Jersey’ presentation just doesn’t fly for enough of the locals that they cannot sustain, no matter how much they try and compete on price and speedy service, they miss the main point that the people here crave a specific, unique, localized flavor.

Working in the entertainment industry for as long as I have, another phenomenon in the homogenization of culture is occurring beyond food. It began many years ago when the family run radio stations were bought by the regional networks, who, in turn where turned into national communication conglomerates. It just about killed what was once beautiful about broadcast radio: the localization of it.

When I first began in radio stations programmed to their market. They understood the local demographic and appeared to really hone the programming to it, both in the music they selected and how the air talent presented it. Some places the jocks were chatty, would talk right over the bleeds for the song right to the vocal bumper or place a huge emphasis on really well executed segues. Others were more cut and dry and almost terse but with this really cutting presentation that seemed to fit the listenership. I used to love traveling and hearing the accents of the jock and their approach to relating to the audience and the difference in programming from edgy to conservative from town to town and how they would integrate their best local talent.

Now, in my travels, every town sounds the same. DJs voiceover shows rather than doing them live, sometimes for multiple stations of different genres in different towns. Playlists are developed from corporate offices on a national scale for what is assumed to be a congruent audience to sell advertising to. It is sad, because it truly has stripped some places of the personality that once made them grand meccas of music.

It comes across in dozens of other things too. Towns and cities becoming cookie cutter versions of one another featuring the same retailers, entertainment and cuisine but not the same people living in them. At least, not yet.

I am all for quicker, cheaper, more familiar – I do it myself on occasion because I do have the time, the money or the spontaneity. However, when it becomes the leviathian devouring localization it frightens me.

As a marketer it is all about personalization and customization, and yet, in the things that should be most unique, our local community, this is the place where the least amount of those occur. Rather, we allow the illusion that the big box retailers and international chain give us something special while serving up the same exact thing half way across the country or halfway around the world.

I miss the days of going to a store, knowing the clerks, getting advice on the products that was as much about satisfying me as it was moving the right stock at the right time off the shelves. I miss when i could get to know the wait staff at restaurant and get expert advice on the best things on the menu because the chef decided to switch things up for the next season’s fare. I also miss when I used to be able to go to a new town and learn from those same kind of people the subtle things about the town that make it unique and special

Rather, sometimes now, it seems we come to rely on the same six places that are cropping up in every town to eat and shop and entertain ourselves at. Which then begs the question, why leave my town to experience something new if the next town over is exactly the same?

There’s no good answer except we know what to expect, quick, cheep and familiar. Well, I’m not quite that boring a person and I find myself rebelling more against it than ever as I continue to strive to find new places off the beaten path still defying the routing of the blessings of local culture.

So here’s my idea for a Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG) in my first campaign that I’ll be DMing.

So here’s my idea for a Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG) in my first campaign that I’ll be DMing. Basically, a High Elven Sorcerer Lich 26. His familiar is a monkey, who also is his phylactery, and has been “Polymorph any Object”-ed into a human, permanently. The party starts out with the party awakening in the Lich’s castle, where hundred of adventurers have been gathered to fight in a tournament. The winners go free. If they entertain the Lich, even better. The Lich has, at his disposal, a small collection of evil clerics, along with a smattering of the highest-level of each class in this world to enforce and spice up the tourney. The PC’s will start at level 1 and work their way up to ten before they leave the arena. Then, they will swear to destroy the Lich, join a campaign against evil, level up, and finally battle the Lich. I have the beginning and end sort of planned out, and have more than enough seeds to fill in the middle. I’m just editing for flavor, and soon I’ll start the campaign (hopefully). Some points:

-I’ll be using Sagotsky’s idea in the tourney to limit the spell components/reagents, but will have to change the spells so that all x-hundred of them only use up about 20-25 reagents, which I will expect the party to keep up with. I’ll try to help by giving them as many chances to buy them as possible, and make them cost-efficient, but otherwise, I’ll try to limit their game-changing spells.

-The familiar will join the party at the beginning, when they all awaken, and continue to stay with them until the final battle, when she’ll have to choose between them and the Lich. She ends up sacrificing herself (because she’s the phylactery) after throwing some Meteor Swarms/Wishes at the Lich (she’s a level 25 sorcerer). So yeah.

-One of the homebrews is the Lich’s spell to make his phylactery (a teddy bear style monkey) into a real animal (I don’t know if this is already a spell… if so, awesome!) and then that into his familiar at level 25.

-A houserule is that all phylacteries, if sentient, gain the spellcasting abilities of the lich at the time of the creation (but they don’t know it [usable only in self-defense?] until after they use it a few times and harness it)

Thoughts/opinions/great edits I should make?

Mental Models are the deeply held images of how the world works; we all carry mental models. They guide our thinking and action in familiar ways. In order to change, we need to change our mental models. We can’t change these models unless we understand what they are. Surfacing, testing and improving our internal pictures of how the world works is an important aspect of learning and change.

I asked for a very special favor from God today. I asked that He deliver a birthday card for my mom.

I asked for a very special favor from God today. I asked that He deliver a birthday card for my mom. Today is her birthday, she would be 54 years old. And I imagined in my head, that His answer was yes….here is what I would say…..

I love you mom. I had to start this letter to you that way…! Oh, how good it feels to say it out loud to you!! I LOVE YOU! I have missed you so much mom…more than my darkest imaginings ever conjured….but you know that, don’t you? I feel you around me now, more than ever. I swear mom, I find myself saying all of the time to Jason or the kids ” I sound just like my mother!” What is trippy lately is that even my voice sounds like yours in my head! I am not sure if I am imagining it or not, to be honest with you…I feel you all around me. I hear you in my head. I hear you in my voice. I see you in the eyes of my daughter. I truly believe that Julia was God’s greatest mercy on me….I was so broken without you when you died. I didn’t know how I would survive it. But the truth is, I survived it because of you. Because you loved me. Your love for me knew no bounds. The pride you felt in me….I don’t know how to fully explain how enveloped I felt in your love. I survived because you showed me how to fight. You showed me what never giving up, looks like. You put such strength in me mom…you were the strongest woman I know! And every day your love washes over me in a new way….that is Julia’s gift to me…she connects me to you. The love I feel for her is so amazing, and then I realize…this is how you felt about me! Oh mom! Your love for me reaches down all of the time and touches me, I feel it….I do. I see myself through your eyes…it is weird…it is like as I hold Julia, and look down at her…somehow I become you, holding me…and the love I feel…it is so amazing. The connection between mother and daughter….I feel you through her. She strengthens me. She makes me fight. She is you, she is me….I hear you talk to her in her dreams…I can see the smile and hear the giggle…and I know it is you, talking to her…and I know what it is that you whisper in her ear…you tell her how much you love her, how much you love us…your love is like a sweet perfume that is transfered to all it touches, and it kisses me when I reach down and touch her. I feel those kisses mom. I know you are here, living through me….and I want to thank you for making me….me. For giving me the strength to survive losing you…to live again in my daughters love. She knows your face so well….last week she came to me with a picture in her hand…she held it out to me and said….”Nana”…..very cleary…at it was a picture of you. I felt you then. Felt your assurance that you are all around…that you have never left. So that is why today, your 54th birthday I am throwing a party! I baked you a birthday cake, just like the ones you always baked for me….and we are going to honor your life. For truly, yours was a life, a love, worth honoring. I love you, thank you for loving me, for giving me life…for showing me how to live and love, and do both, well. I will always use your example as the guide for my life….Happy Birthday mom….we’ll blow out the candles.

What do you do when the hope and belief that things will be better one day, just isn’t good enough??? How do you keep holding on? I believe, I believe, I believe…but there are honestly days when believing just doesn’t cut it anymore. I’m so empty and broken, so weary that I can hardly move. I’m tired of believing out of faith…I want to believe by sight! By touch! By smell and taste…I want to live my belief!!! So what do I do? Do I give up hope? Do I stop believing? I said that hope is no longer good enough…do I really mean it?……hmmm….. I don’t know how I can keep on living this way but without HOPE I have NOTHING. So my back is against the wall and I have no where to go, what do I do? I’m gonna fight! I’m gonna fight to keep my head in the game. I’m gonna fight whoever, wherever, whenever, I’m not giving up! There are days when I want to give up, whole weeks in fact…but I will not do it. For whatever reason, God has seen to it that I have survived when others have not. How can I give up, when I have the gift of life pulsing inside of me? Every breath is such a sweet gift…God, give me the strength to never give up hope even in the midst of hopelessness, and to keep believing even when it’s the hardest thing to do. AMEN

I like to think of myself as a fairly well read person, I have, after all, embarked upon a career where the use of language and words is heavily scrutinised. I also identify myself as British, with British sensibilities and dry wit, but this allusion was shattered sometime last Friday when someone made comment about actively seeking ‘strange.’

I enquired as to what he meant, ‘strange.’ It would turn out to be that it is the act of actively seeking out relations (purely physical) with the opposite sex, a new partner and, thus, ‘strange.’ I was taken aback, at first. I still find myself reeling a bit whenever I use the word in its purest meaning, but that is unimportant.

The gears had begun to creak to a slow start by then, and now I feel compelled to ask if this singular instance can account for the state we find ourselves in today? We seek change, strange or otherwise, and promote the phrase ‘new,’ as if it were better than the current. Politics is rife with it, with the economy now just starting to recover there are those – who I will not name, for fear of ever associating with the likes of them – who still think change would be a good idea.

I disagree.

I recently watched a video promoting the current, the familiar if you will, and it was all good stuff. There is a reason, after all, the current people in power were elected, it was good enough then, and it should be good enough now. Yet, there are those up in arms, appearing on Question Time, suggesting that they have a better idea, that they have the key to unlock the restraints of our current environment.

How? Well, I do not know. I assume it has will have something to do with stealing all of President Obama’s ideas, and then passing them off as our own. A certain political party has already, after all, stolen his campaign ethos of “change,” which is going down a treat, compared to some of their older – chav-culture related – ideas.

I briefly touched upon this in an other write-up, but one in three new British marriages are, statistically speaking, going to fail. I find myself asking if it is because we are no longer content with just being happy, and if we instead need to have the ‘new car smell,’ repeatedly?

It is how the electronics market stays afloat, after all. If we were to all stand up tomorrow, and say that standard definition works just fine, it would no doubt collapse, but we are no longer content – as a culture – with being just content. We need the biggest, the best and the shiniest.

For a brief moment, I had hoped that our British sensibilities would save us, when Concorde was put to rest – an overly advanced piece of technology that served no purpose in the world, other than proving that we could go really fast – to America, of all places (at that point in time it was not the fantastic place it is now, you could argue).

I am not a fan of the ‘strange,’ I find that the traditional is always better until the new has become trust worthy and proven. It is why I live life by the British philosophy of believing that words alone are not enough to gain my vote of confidence, and that is why I do not vote for a certain political party.

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samu

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samurai could kill any common person who failed to show him proper respect. The Japanese were required to behave in precisely prescribed ways—wearing permitted clothing, walking only a certain way, sleeping with their heads pointing in a certain direction and legs arranged a particular way. Eating, greeting, gesturing with hands, opening doors and many work tasks had to be done in assigned ways without deviation. Conduct became a measure of morality, and virtue in manners was visible for all to see. Even today, the code of conduct plays a significant role in the lives of the Japanese. Many societies, not Japan alone, have a prescribed form and manner for every familiar situation that might arise. Unforeseen situations can cause intense embarrassment or discomfort. Throughout East Asia, actions are judged by the manner in which they are performed. More important than the accomplishment of a task is the question of how someone went about trying to complete the task: Did he act sincerely? More important than winning the race is the grace of the runner. More important than expertise is the way one gets along with others. More important than profits is harmony. In contrast, Westerners and particularly Americans are more concerned with the principles of things, hard “measures” and objective facts. Although rules of ethics are extremely important, we are more goal oriented than method-conscious, we say “a good loser is a loser.”

One aspect of form is the concept of “face.” Much has been written about “face-saving” in Japan and China, but face-saving is important absolutely everywhere. The difference is only a matter of degree and nuance. Where an American might feel a little guilty or inadequate, an Asian, Arab or South American may feel deep shame and humiliation. What an American might see as a little honest and constructive criticism, the foreigner may take as a devastating blow to pride and dignity. A foreigner is likely to be sensitive to feelings of others in transactions that an American would consider strictly impersonal, such as returning a defective product or switching hairdressers. The traveler simply must be more conscious of saying things or behaving in ways that cannot be taken as disrespect, criticism or humiliation. In some countries it seems just about anything can be taken personally, even such indirect affronts as not taking your shoes off in a mosque or complaining about the heat.

Harmony with the environment can be as important as sensitivity to people in some cultures. In Japan a woman wears a soft pastel dress to a flower show so as not to take away from the beauty of the flowers. In countries where people believe in reincarnation they are careful about all forms of life. In India, for example, people are careful not to swallow gnats or step on ants—one might be a relative.

OSL has definitely been a time of stretching for me; people are constantly encouraging growth here and offering up their advice. This is good, but I think its been a theme here that sometimes good advice falls to the wayside for the simple fact that people must earn the right to speak into someone else’s life.

There is certainly intrinsic value in “sucking it up and taking advice,” in humbling yourself and accepting someone’s rebuke, re-evaluating yourself, and making necessary changes. However, not everyone is at a place where this is possible. Sometimes we are insecure, and when someone we aren’t familiar with comes to us aggressively with a complaint or suggestion about ways we can “fix” our character, it becomes difficult for us to look past our own pride and see that they are correct. While its true that we must deal with the pride issue, there is also a responsibility for the other person to deal with their motives and their approach when trying to encourage others to grow.

The point of “rebuking” someone, or suggesting change, must always be exactly that: change for the other person so they become more like Jesus’ character. I think that sometimes, when we come at people with a certain tone and without truly considering them or how they will best accept our advice, we rebuke from a place of our own pride and insecurity. I’ve noticed myself doing it so, so many times without really even realizing it. No, I think that a genuine heart for others will seek to effect change in the easiest way possible; in other words, the person who really is concerned for the other will approach them in whatever way is necessary to actually make a difference in them. They will seek to avoid any tone, word choice, and anything else that might hinder the person from receiving the advice.
