Me “Jesus white people are dumb.”

The Missus “Uh…we’ve been over this. You’re white.”

Me “I am NOT white.”

The Missus “You are white.”

Me “No, I am not white.”

The Missus “You are white. I am white. The kids are white. We’re all white.”

Me “I am NOT white.”

The Missus “We both have blue eyes, white skin, two white kids. We’re white.”

Me “I am NOT white.”

The Missus “You’re British.”

Me “So?”

The Missus “You’re white. You are what happens when white meets bread. You are white.”

Me “I am NOT white. I don’t like hockey, I don’t try to dance, I don’t go to The Hard Rock Cafe, hang out in food courts, I don’t watch Oprah, I don’t swim, fish or hunt, own a small yappy dog or listen to Steely Dan. I don’t drive a Volvo, have any vanilla scented candles, go to yoga, wear Dockers or even vote. I am NOT white.”

The Missus “Cracker.”

Me “Really? Okay so if I am white then why don’t we have any U2 albums?”

The Missus “That has nothing to do with being white, that is just good taste and common sense.”

Me “I am NOT white. White people do weird things and their houses smell different. Like why do white people ski or bobsled? Have you ever seen me put mayonnaise on french fries or grow a ponytail? I don’t own a fanny pack, golf and we do not microwave Uncle Bens rice. I am NOT white.”

The Missus “Look in the mirror Whitey. That is a honky staring back at you.”

Me “That proves nothing. I don’t go kayaking and never watched Everybody Loves Raymond.”

The Missus “You built an Ikea cabinet last weekend. It doesn’t get much whiter than that.”

Me “Okay I will concede the Ikea and spraying Febreeze and I will even volunteer that I secretly occasionally enjoy Robbie Williams, but that doesn’t make me white. White people do stupid shit. See?”

The Missus “That doesn’t count. He was from New Zealand. They’re nuts.”

Me “True, but how about this?”

Climate change fears spark ‘new nuclear age’
Even some green groups now see power source as ‘part of the answer’

LONDON – Nuclear power — long considered environmentally hazardous — is emerging as perhaps the world’s most unlikely weapon against climate change, with the backing of even some green activists who once campaigned against it.

It has been 13 years since the last new nuclear power plant opened in the United States. But around the world, nations under pressure to reduce the production of climate-warming gases are turning to low-emission nuclear energy as never before. The Obama administration and leading Democrats, in an effort to win greater support for climate change legislation, are eyeing federal tax incentives and loan guarantees to fund a new crop of nuclear power plants across the United States that could eventually help drive down carbon emissions.

From China to Brazil, 53 plants are now under construction worldwide, with Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia seeking to build their first reactors, according to global watchdog groups and industry associations. The number of plants being built is double the total of just five years ago.

Me “And now, that they are finally getting it, let’s take a peek at white those same people who are finally beginnng to understand have accomplished by fighting against this for so many years and the damage that THEY could have prevented in the first place.”

Climate ‘is a major cause’ of conflict in Africa

Climate has been a major driver of armed conflict in Africa, research shows – and future warming is likely to increase the number of deaths from war.

US researchers found that across the continent, conflict was about 50% more likely in unusually warm years.

Writing in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), they suggest strife arises when the food supply is scarce in warm conditions.

Climatic factors have been cited as a reason for several recent conflicts.

One is the fighting in Darfur in Sudan that according to UN figures has killed 200,000 people and forced two million more from their homes.

Previous research has shown an association between lack of rain and conflict, but this is thought to be the first clear evidence of a temperature link.

The researchers used databases of temperatures across sub-Saharan Africa for the period between 1981 and 2002, and looked for correlations between above average warmth and civil conflict in the same country that left at least 1,000 people dead.

Warm years increased the likelihood of conflict by about 50% – and food seems to be the reason why.

“Studies show that crop yields in the region are really sensitive to small shifts in temperature, even of half a degree (Celsius) or so,” research leader Marshall Burke, from the University of California at Berkeley, told BBC News.

“If the sub-Saharan climate continues to warm and little is done to help its countries better adapt to high temperatures, the human costs are likely to be staggering.”

Conflicting outcomes

If temperatures rise across the continent as computer models project, future conflicts are likely to become more common, researchers suggest.

Northwestern Kenya’s drought has brought conflict between pastoralists
Their study shows an increase of about 50% over the next 20 years.

Kittens the folks in Africa and around the world can at least partially thank the non-science and publicity stunts of the folks in Greenpeace and their kind for making sure climate change happened with their propagandist fear mongering.

You don’t have to be a fan of nuclear energy to understand how the dots have connected and who has been responsible for helping climate change destroy our planet. We could have at least partially prevented climate change if it weren’t for the years of fear mongering from Greenpeace because they refused to accept science, much the same way some people refuse to accept the works of Darwin, usually with the same fear tactics.

Fighting against nuclear power has helped them raise a hell of a lot of funds. Funds that paid the for the cheap stunts which raised more funds and ultimately went into the pockets of those working for Greenpeace exactly the same way televangelists have picket the pockets of people who possibly though well intended are content to merely cut a cheque and mail it to the people that claim to have simple and easy to understand answers rather than inform themselves and ask the hard questions to the people who actually study these things.

It has been this blissfull ignorance and willingness to accept the sideshow antics of a few people who’s stock and trade is fear and cheap stunts that has mankind scrambling to erase the damages caused by propaganda spewed out by people who are raking in a shitload of of money by keeping people terrified.

If you don’t believe me or agree, then spend 47 seconds watching this.

Sick to your stomach yet?

That my Kittens is just one of their many very slickly produced anti-nuclear energy commercials. It suggests that the biggest act of terrorism ever committed is something to be used as a marketing tool.

These are the folks protecting you from yourself and keeping the world safe from scientists who actually have science on their side.

It is one thing to rape the people who send in donations to these glorified hecklers, but it is another for them to have played a major part in contributing to climate change because of their fear mongering and to not accept that because of this, people in Darfur and around the world are dying right now….and now….oooh there goes a few more….and no…….yup, now too….and so on because of them.

Like I said Kittens, you don’t have to be or not be a fan of nuclear energy or even care about dying Africans. Believe me though, those folks in Africa sure could use the money that Greenpeace takes in every year to feed themselves and having clean water and a power grid would allow them to raise themselves out of poverty, disease, famine and slavery.

If Greenpeace were to donate all of their money that they have ever received from their anti nuclear campaigns, they could build hospitals, farms and a clean energy power grid.

Where is their commercial asking you to send money to African charities for those causes instead of them?

You will never ever see one because there isn’t any money in it for them and starving Africans don’t need their commercials to act scary. Famine, disease, war and human suffering is scary enough without Greenpeace’s help and besides, you won’t see many Greenpeace stuntmen trying to hang a banner on a man with a machete saying “save the planet.”

The world is going down the tube. Sin has become politically correct. People flock to religions which offer imaginary false gods, who will tolerate their sin, and deaden their conscience. No-one is immune, even me. There was a time when I would welcome all of this as a good thing, but I now have a problem. My spirit was brought to life by the living and true God, and the world now gives me a feeling of nausea, overlaid by a feeling of concern about inevitable doom of those not spiritually alive. Last rounds, ladies and gentlemen. it’s closing time.

All this time God screams at the world that it is fallen, and offers salvation in the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. The world is not listening. Now many “acts of God” are needed to wake people up. How many floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, epidemics, famines, and wars must happen to make people see? Or maybe these things are just warnings to be recognized only by the elect of God?

What should I do? I share the Gospel but no-one believes it. Some say they believe it but it is obvious that they do not. Is it possible to be born again and have no desire to read the Bible, worship God, fellowship with the brothers and sisters in Christ?

There are two options to take. Stop caring about the result and just minister to the lost in obedience but without really knowing what will happen. The other is better but harder to find. I need to know what God is doing, and join in His work. I need to join Him in His work, and not improve on mine. I need to listen to the silent voice of God.

I am going on a retreat sometime in December, in Tagaytay, a tranquil place near Metro-Manila, Philippines, next to Taal volcano. I need to discern God’s will. That means being disconnected from the internet, TV, radio, books, entertainment, and even Study Bibles. Just God, the Bible, and me, for 5 days, alone. I really do not know what will happen. I am scared that nothing will happen. I am also scared that something might happen. Since this scary feeling can only come from Satan I am resolved to proceed with this plan. I leave it all to God. I really do not know what to do. I really am unable to commit the stupid mistake of recommending a solution to God. Please pray for me that I hear the silent voice of God, and obey what He says.

I took a walk in the woods with my son and his friend. I talk about my plans for a retreat and other random stuff. Here it is. Enjoy! Be strong in the Lord, who is coming soon! After all, it is written…

Was that the silent voice of God just then? I wish I knew for sure…

God bless,

George

Well, now there are Cereal Republics…

From Food First:

Ethiopia’s recent history is punctuated by famine. Severe droughts, on-going conflicts and stagnating agricultural growth have been reproducing widespread food insecurities for decades. Compounded by cereal prices doubling over the last year, many people are struggling to meet even their most basic food needs. Concurrently the World Food Programme has had to reduce emergency food rations due to the high global food prices. Right now, at least 6.2 million people in Ethiopia are seriously threatened by hunger and malnutrition, and require urgent food assistance.

At the same time Esaya Kebede, Director of the Ethiopian Agricultural Investment Agency, revealed that the Ethiopian government has so far designated a total of 3 million hectares of agricultural land, an area around the size of Belgium, to be leased to incoming foreign investors. For a country on the constant brink of famine, this is a perplexing move. What is behind such massive land giveaways?

The land deals are part of a wider global trend, dubbed by many as neo-colonial land grabs. Shocked by the price spikes and distribution bottlenecks during the global food price crisis, wealthy food-importing countries from the Middle-East, India and China are scrambling to buy up enormous tracts of arable land on the African continent in order to long-distance farm for their own domestic markets. Similar to the Central American banana republics of the early twentieth century, foreign agri-businesses are working in close collaboration with their own governments to establish enormous agricultural plantations in African countries. Exploitative labor conditions, peasant land dispossessions and environmentally destructive industrial farming methods spring to mind. The only difference is that the target crops now are not cash crops like bananas, rubber or cocoa, but basic food staples, such as wheat, maize, barley and rice. Are we facing the emergence of neo-colonial ‘cereal republics’ throughout the developing world?

Almost 25 million is a lot of mouths to feed. This is the population of Saudi Arabia and a number that continues to grow. The upside is their wealth. Where they do not have arable land, they instead have the means to pay for it.

But they don’t just want to pay for imports. Instead, they want to use their wealth to buy the land and control the production of their food sources.

This is leading them, and others, to Africa. A land with many problems of its own, the ethical and economic dilemmas being faced are new and numerous.

Is this investment helping or harming countries like Ethiopia? More specifically, is it just the native elite who benefit or does the common man also get his share? Are they being paid a fair rate for the land?

Colonial exploitation has made many wary of new deals. Additionally, structurally created famines that exist today cannot be ignored in the equation.

But hunger can make history blurry in anyone’s mind and provide a strong incentive to seize opportunities where presented.

A recent article on the wire “Debt may swamp the federal Treasury” I’ve retitled h

A recent article on the wire “Debt may swamp the federal Treasury” I’ve retitled here as will swamp because there is no may about it. Let’s look at some key points from the article:

With the national debt now above $12 trillion, the White House estimates that the government’s tab for servicing the debt will top $700 billion a year in 2019, up from $202 billion this year [emphasis by GardenSERF], even if annual budget deficits shrink dramatically. Other forecasters say the figure could be much higher.

In concrete terms, an additional $500 billion a year in interest expense would total more than the combined federal budgets this year for education, energy, homeland security and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The potential for rapidly escalating interest payouts is just one of the wrenching challenges facing the United States after decades of living beyond its means.
….
Americans now have to climb out of two deep holes: as debt-loaded consumers, whose personal wealth sank along with housing and stock prices; and as taxpayers, whose government debt has almost doubled in the last two years alone, just as costs tied to benefits for retiring baby boomers are set to explode.

That’s just one suction cup on the massive financial tentacle now wrapped around the USA and locked in a conscious economic attack on this country. Other tightly fastened cups on this single tentacle include the trade deficit, overseas outsourcing, manipulated exchange rates, tax breaks (and removal of tariffs) which both encouraged and allowed domestic manufacturing to be moved out of the USA, etc, etc.

A similar method of attack used on the consumers (once known as citizens) of this country was also used on its government. However, the financial/economic attack is only one tentacle in a multi-prong attacked which will be used against this country over the next two decades. However, many Americans will be unable to see this ongoing long term attack due to their daily conditioning by Hollywood/Mainstream Media with the usual short-term emphasis on the “here and now” and instant gratification. When you think of the frog in the warm water being brought to the slow boil on the stove, imagine a master chef paying close attention to the amount of heat being applied under the pan. This is the level of sophistication and planning being used against the USA.

Other methods of attack on the people and this country as a whole in the future will be more physically direct. They will come years apart at first. Waiting for the smoke to clear will take months at a time in the early stage we’re now in, but even this will be enough for many Americans to forget and be unable to connect the dots. However, the later attacks on this country will be in relatively more rapid succession and from many directions all at once –similar to an octopus wrapping many tentacles around its prey.

This could take the form of multiple and coordinated acts of terrorism involving WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction, but I would emphasize the biological form of attack as most damaging to the population), symbolic or actual decapitation strikes (persons as well as the means of mass command, control and communication), followed by the loss of our access to imported oil. Famine is a given in this scenario due to our reliance on fossil fuels in our national model of mass agriculture when combined with our already current loss of local food production of many key staples.

Nothing I have posted here is new. In fact, this model of attack has been used time and time again throughout human history. It has been used by both foreign invader and domestic tyrant alike –with the two often working together hand in hand behind the scenes and out of view of the common people.

We have much to escape, much to shed, much to loose, much to famine from and much to walk without. M

We have much to escape, much to shed, much to loose, much to famine from and much to walk without. Moreover, there is far more that we ought receive. It is made perfect in the Lord. And it is the Lord whose perfection is gifted freely unto those who so submit that they receive it.

There is but one way to sever the chains of bondage from that which you come from. You were born to an environment where no father nor mother may have existed. Perhaps it was an environment by which chaos devoured you lean and mean into futile rebellion even unto that which is good. For what is good?

Is it your friend beside you? Your wife? Your brother? Your neighbor? Be it your dog that returns even after you have wrongly kicked him in your deeply embedded rage of anger? Was it Mao Tse Tung or perhaps Benito Mussolini or even Adolf Hitler? Who is good?

Ought it be defined and declared that all men should agree? Ought your good be greater than mine? Perhaps your good just as good as mine? Yet when my good just isn’t good enough should I fashion is definition accordingly? And to you the same? Should in debate the definition be altered by mere perspective? Ought we pervert our utterances evermore that we tailor it to our quests for inequity? Are you willing to accept that there remain truth everlasting? What is good?

WHAT IS GOOD

Matthew 19:17 – And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Mark 10:18 – And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Luke 18:19 – And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.

Now let it be known what is good. Therefore there be no mistake nor nothing but a definitive proclamation of good. The definition of good is thereby defined and everlasting on its own accord. It is neither me nor you. It is Almighty God as Jesus so proclaimed.

Finally, from where have you arisen? Great disdain do I have for much of what I had to endure during my earliest years of childhood and youth. It was not great and certainly not the worse. But have I been shown any other way that I might know how to be a “good” man to raise a family of two boys or moreover be a deserving husband of such a great wife who takes great care of myself and our boys?

This woman, my wife, stands at my greatest honor and thanks to have gifted me such earnest prayer and persistence in the Lord. I cleave unto her my wife who stands to build me to my finest hour in the Lord. She stands resilient in her directives to deliver us from generations’ fate. Tired in her plight she drives on that our two boys may be delivered from our own woeful pasts. She builds me up even when undeserving of such gifts of grace. She is magnificent in her manners and sharp with her retort against wrong. Correction is fierce but even still loving and pure.

I am inspired and go nowhere without. We are one in the same. She prays fervently on my behalf and behalf of our family. At my greatest hour she awakens me to rise. She is a valiant warrior herself, faithful and steadfast for the Lord. Even before her I stand, yet she stands before me such a gift that by whom there is much gain.

Likewise at such low she raises me accordingly by way of earnest servitude to the Lord everlasting, fashioning herself tireless in righteousness for the sake of our family even at great measures.

I have learned many of the wrong ways by the manner at which I have arrived. As a man, as a husband and as a father I am merely lost upon my own accord. My practices are vaguely practical and even less loving than I might be of myself if I even knew love beyond which she has led me. I was left to my own right, left to my own way, left to my own flawed vision of what family ought to be. My wife has been the greatest of contenders on my behalf. Her pursuits were greater than my reliance upon self. She ushered me unto my redemption. She in her own graciously loving way was delivered me that I might be saved from my own peril and likewise the generations hereafter.

Now what damage has been done? The path from which we might flee might lead full circle in our haste and angst against our those who’ve delivered us unto this moment. Now what damage has been done?

The damage from mere words can draw down nations. Words ruin marriage and raise up armies against a people. How is it that the generations from which you come and which follow shall not equally be affected by the sins therein of the forefathers? Even you at work whose anger is awoken take it with you and lay it upon the threshold of your home. Ought not the same remain for generations of perpetual misery that is made feast on our families?

Exodus 34:7 - Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty ; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation .

Joel 2-3 – 2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?3 Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

I urge you to release it.

As a man and warrior, the enemy is real and wears a face and yet likewise goes silent among you, unnoticed. He wears the face that our soldiers face in Afghanistan. He is shewn down by bullet or by hand. He wears a face in more common places and yet goes unnoticed and lives freely among you to toil in your way. Target acquisition. Engage. Eliminate.

Sever ties from the way of generations who have jettisoned you unto this moment and make new for you, your family and even still such a great country among us.

And take upon you “the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” that you may drive the sword straight through that which you were and lead those generations who follow unto greatness greater than you yourself, as it is purposed deep within you, where reside the voice hereafter referenced. Heed.

Ephesians 6:10-20 – 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places .13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

This old Irish cemetery once served the City of Waterford ( world famous for its Crystal glass) and was also used during the Great Famine in the 1800’s. Some graves even date back as far as 1734.

The first President of Ireland, John Moore was interred here in 1799 following his capture during the 1798 Rebellion against ther British. His grave lay undiscovered for over 160 years and was accidentally found in 1959. Two years later his remains were exhumed and taken for burial near his family home in Castlebar, Co. Mayo.

Know that there is nothing that can separate you from your true nature from the truth of who you are

Know that there is nothing that can
separate you from your true nature
from the truth of who you are
not even the illusions that overtake your mind
that infest your consciousness with
confusion
the connection you have with your highest and best self
the connection you have with source
is immutable
and will always guide you through
even though you are free to choose as you decide
yes
there will be no harm that can ever come to you
realize that all fears and feelings to the contrary
are illusion
you fear what you do not understand
what you do not know
you create suffering by looking at things from the fear and conditioned thinking you have learned
such a limited perspective and understanding of what is
realize there is a greater overstanding
that you can acquire through alignment
and you will then see there is no harm that can be experienced to that which is real
the harm you experience is always to the temporal
to the illusions
but what has given things life
what has given these things space and being in your consciousness

that which gives all things life
cannot be harmed and that is what is most important for you to recognize
your fears of famine
poverty conflict war
etc. are illusions
though these things are experiences
though these things are in your consciousness
they are not lasting real or true
they are suffering of ignorance
and can easily be cured with love
yes
but even where the illusions persist
source is there
yes
even where the unwanted suffering persists
source is there
realize that you can give up the
wondering give up the concern
give up the stress of and resistance to these illusions
for they are not real
death is not real
the conditioned suffering you have accepted poverty and starvation to be is not real
YES THERE IS KINDNESS AND LOVE IN GIVING TO THOSE IN NEED
YES THERE IS NEED FOR THESE ACTIONS
BUT NOT TO GLORIFY POVERTY OR STARVATION
NOT TO GIVE THEM POWER
SIMPLY TO EXPRESS LOVE
REALIZE THAT WHERE POVERTY AND STARVATION ARE NOT MET
THERE IS NO GREAT TRAVESTY
WHY
BECAUSE THESE EXPERIENCES ARE WHAT THEY ARE AND PART OF THE WHOLE
PART OF THE BALANCE
PART OF REALITY
FOR THOSE WHO ARE COMPELLED WITH LOVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL THING SOURCE CHOOSES TO EXPERIENCE THROUGH THEM
YES
FOR YOU
WHAT IS NECESSARY IS FOR YOU TO TAP INTO WHAT YOUR HEART DESIRES WHAT SOURCE HAS IMPLANTED DEEP WITHIN YOU TO EXPERIENCE IN YOU AS YOU THROUGH YOU
AND YOU WILL SEE YOUR ROLE YOUR PATH OF LOVE UNFOLD
BUT BE NOT DISTRACTED OR CONCERNED WITH ALL THE ILLS AND PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD FOR THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU ARE HERE TO DO
YOU ARE HERE TO BE LOVE TO LOVE
A PATH OF LOVE UNIQUE TO YOU
AND YOU WILL FIND YOUR PASSION YOUR CALLING BY GOING DEEP WITHIN TO ASCERTAIN EXACTLY WHAT SOURCE HAS PUT IN YOUR SOUL
YES
THAT IS YOUR ROLE
AND THAT IS WHY YOU ARE HERE
YOUR PURPOSE
ASK SEEK KNOCK AND IT SHALL BE OPENED GIVEN AND UNFOLDED
YES
THAT IS THE TRUE ESSENCE OF LIFE
THE TRUTH BEHIND THE ILLUSIONS
KNOW THAT THE BEST AND THE HIGHEST IS
ALREADY
AND BE NOT AFRAID OF ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ANY EXTERNAL OBSERVATIONS
FOR ILLUSION IS FEAR
TRUTH IS LOVE
SEE ALL THAT IS WITH LOVE
ALL THAT IS WITH TRUST
ALL THAT IS WITH CONFIDENCE
THAT SOURCE IS BEHIND WITHIN AND THROUGH EVERYTHING YOU OBSERVE
THERE IS NO CHAOS THAT IS CONTRARY TO THE ORDER SOURCE HAS INSTILLED WITHIN EXISTENCE
LET YOUR MIND REST FROM THESE CHAOTIC DESTRUCTIVE ILLUSIONS AND REST IN THE PEACE THAT COMES WITH TRUSTING SOURCE
REST IN THE PEACE THAT COMES WITH KNOWING YOU ARE AN EXTENSION OF THE ALMIGHTY
THE ALL POWERFUL ALL KNOWING SOURCE
REST IN THIS PEACE AND ALLOW SOURCE TO GUIDE YOUR STEPS YOUR ACTIONS YOUR THOUGHTS
MOMENT TO MOMENT
KNOW THIS AND RESIST NOT
FOR YOU HAVE PRACTICED THE CONTRARY LONG ENOUGH
LET GO AND LET SOURCE
AS YOU SAY AND HAVE HEARD SAID
ALL IS WELL AND ALWAYS WILL BE
AND SO IT IS

Taken in Karamoja district, Uganda in April 1980, the contrasting hands of a starving boy and a miss

Taken in Karamoja district, Uganda in April 1980, the contrasting hands of a starving boy and a missionary spoke louder than any world leader and any news story about the famine in Uganda. Karamoja region has the driest climate in Uganda and was prone to droughts. The 1980 famine in there where 21% of the population (and 60% of the infants) died was one of the worst in history. The worst recorded famine was the great Finn famine (1696), which killed a third of the population.

The photographer Mike Wells, who would later win the World Press Photo Award for this photo, admitted that he was ashamed to take the photo. The same publication that sat on his picture for five months without publishing it entered it into a competition. He was embarrassed to win as he never entered the competition himself, and was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death.

Famine, drought and ethnic violence continue to this day in Karamoja. The Karamojong are a nomadic people, but since Idi Amin years in the 1970s, their nomadic patterns were curtailed due to the increase of cross border security, internal raids, and influx of weapons which enabled them to lead raids.

Qui peut être heureux? Pire, qui peut-il s’affirmer comme tel?

Fidèle à mon habitude, je vous fais part de mes ressentiments.

Je me sens mal.

ROME – A UN summit on food security vowed in a final declaration Monday to take “urgent action” to eliminate hunger, the plight of more than one billion people around the world.

Hunger is “an unacceptable blight on the lives, livelihoods and dignity of one-sixth of the world’s population,” the declaration states, vowing “to take urgent action to eradicate hunger from the world.”

The summit of the Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organization attended by some 60 heads of state and government also outlines five “principles” for combatting the scourge.

One principle enshrines a “twin-track approach” to food security consisting of direct action for the “most vulnerable” and sustainable “medium and long-term programs to eliminate the root causes of hunger and poverty.”

The declaration also calls on wealthy nations that pledged 20 billion dollars (13.3 billion euros) in aid over the next three years at the 2009 summit of the Group of Eight in L’Aquila, Italy, to honour their commitments.

African leaders are hoping major progress will be made during the UN’s climate conference in Copenha

African leaders are hoping major progress will be made during the UN’s climate conference in Copenhagen (COP15) which is scheduled to begin December 7. Many believe the conference will be crucial in fighting world hunger.

As U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there could be “no food security without climate security.”

Food security is an obvious problem for many developing countries who are already wielding from the current economic situation. However, they may be disappointed to hear that U.S. President Barack Obama along with other world leaders will most likely opt out of signing any legally binding climate pact until at least next year, according to African Reuters. But, they also reported that European negotiators have said the move did not imply weaker action.

Still, human rights activist and international executive director of Greenpeace, Kumi Naidoo, stated in an article for BBC that leaders need to take serious action now. Arguing that

“Nature does not negotiate. It will not wait for our political leaders to set aside their petty differences and short term self interest. It will not wait for civil society to join in common cause.”

In a video address, Archbishop Desmond Tutu winner stated that 185,000,000 Africans will die this century as a direct result of climate change. He goes on to say,

“As I speak, famine is increasing. Flooding is increasing. As is disease and insecurity globally because of water scarcity. It is the countries which are the least responsible for causing climate change that are paying the heaviest price.”

Salifou Sawadogo, Burkina Faso’s environment minister, was quoted in October as saying Africa would need $65 billion to cope with the effects of global warming and along with other African leaders have asked to set up a global fund for the continent’s developing countries.

The Global Post reports that “moves to keep global warming down to an increase of 2 degrees Celsius could cost developing countries $140 billion to $675 billion a year, according to the World Bank. Adapting to global warming — as opposed to trying to stem it — could cost $75 billion a year.”

On a blog hosted by Cop15.dk, chairman of Malian NGO MFC Nyetaa Ibrahim Togola said,

“If the world leaders fail to understand this signal by not having an agreement in Copenhagen, then we should expect more displacement of people from one area to another and increase conflicts that could be critical for democracy and security in the World.”

Again, a World Summit on Food Security this week is addressing the symptoms but not the causes. Part of the cause is years of poor rains: few African farmers have irrigation and in Ethiopia, 90 per cent of agriculture is rain-dependent. But farmers in other parts of the world, like Australia, routinely face droughts yet avoid famine….

http://www.lesoir.be/actualite/monde/2009-11-14/le-directeur-general-de-la-fao-observe-une-greve-de-la-faim-738076.shtml
