One of the most famous attractions in Ocean City, Maryland is their amusement parks. This exciting form of entertainment is fun for all ages and is reason alone to vacation in this city. Some of the most popular parks are Trampers rides on the Boardwalk Jolly Rogers on 30th street, and frontier town in west ocean city. The very old carousel is 50 feet in diameter, featuring 45 hand-carved wooded animals, 3 chariots, and a rocking chair. Originally driven by a vapor engine and only costing a nickel, the ride is now electrified and costs four tickets, which is $2.00. Ocean City is the most popular for its sightseeing, attractions, destinations, nightlife, and accommodation listing like cheap hotels.

Regia

Shane Acker

Cu

Elijah Wood, Christopher Plummer

Gen film

Animatie, Aventuri, Fantastic, Razboi, SF

Nota personala: 9

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but blogging is really a feast-or-famine kind of thing. You have a great weekend with time enough to think and read a book, and suddenly you have like 6 posts all thought out, including a societal indictment and discussion of good bras. This after the last month where you hoarded and scrimped anecdotes in a desperate attempt to make your life sound interesting, at least to yourself.

Well, I’ve discovered that hoarding good blogging material is a little like hoarding Thanksgiving leftovers — if you don’t use them right away, they go bad. So you might as well whip up a nice tall open-faced turkey sandwich and enjoy already.

Fantastic!

This weekend was marked on the calendar as “Brenda is Fantastic” weekend. I put it on the calendar so I would take it seriously. There are always things that need to be done, and making myself look and feel good is usually at the bottom of that list. That’s ok short term, but sometimes you need to invest in yourself in order to give as wholly to the other people who count on you. “Brenda is Fantastic” weekend started at 1:30 at Intimacy Copley Place in Boston. I’ve spent the last 5 years pregnant, nursing, trying to get pregnant, rinse and repeat. The body changes involved in that have made any investment in undergarments a losing proposition. That time is now over, and I was ready to invest.

I figured a really good bra would cost about $50. I added $25 on to my estimates to be safe. I had trouble imagining a bra could cost more than $75. The fitting was interesting. My fitter had a zip up dress so she could model the combination she was sporting that day. (In her defense, it looked great on her 10 months post-partum self!) She sat me down and gave me the lecture on proper care of my bradrobe. (I’m not making that word up.) Then she brought out the samples. I figured I’d start with two — one that would work under anything and one that would be very, uh, appealing.

None of the bras had price tags on them. This should have clued me in that I was in over my head.

I got two bras that were — are! Fantastic. They look awesome and make me feel awesome. One is extremely comfortable, and I suspect the other will be once I break it in.

But man, I totally and completely underestimated just how much a bra could cost. I’m pretty sure if I’d been shopping in a less, uh, intensive environment I wouldn’t have bought the more expensive one. I’m pretty sure if I’d seen a price tag, I wouldn’t have tried it on in CASE I liked it as much as I ended up doing. I find myself ashamed to have paid so much for something — this is a kind of indulgence I don’t really feel comfortable with. The more expensive bra cost $180.

I walked out of the store sort of shell-shocked into this mall that takes it for granted. The beautiful people all around me were likely all wearing $200 bras and $500 shoes. I looked around and I felt like I was all wrong: my shoes are a little scuffed, my pants are not designer. I was wearing makeup (unusual for me) but we’re talking Wet-and-Wild folks. My top, which seemed pretty in the morning, seemed dowdy and unsophisticated in the glare of the marble. My favorite courduroy jacket seemed threadbare in the soft lighting. My purse is hopeless — a $20 Target creation overflowing with children’s toys and touched by white wall paint in the corner. I hugged it close to my body hoping no one would notice me. As I hunted desperately for safe ground (aka Starbucks) I hoped no one would see me or call me out or notice how wrong I was. I wondered just what criteria the numerous lurking security officers used for escorting someone out. (One hopes more than a terrible purse.) I felt like there was exactly one part of my entire self that was ok for this place: the new bra.

These environments are set up to make you feel like you are not good enough. They also try to let you know that your failings are not permanent — if you spend enough money, pay enough attention and do the right things, you might perhaps hope to walk those halls between the Prada store and Monolo Blalik with confidence that you are all right. You are presented with the false hope that this is a winnable path to being acceptable.

I choose not to play that game. I vehemently reject the premise that “good enough” has to do with the right shoes and right clothes and perfection of physical attributes. It was a with a great sigh of relief that I crossed the busy street to Back Bay T stop, to a more normal world where I’m a perfectly ok person.

Did I mention I picked up “Twilight” to read during my sojourn? I enjoyed it as I switched from the Orange to the Red line. You see, I know Forks. My father lived there for a year when I was in my late teens. A boyfriend and I on a date had once wandered our way across the Olympic Peninsula, to many of the spots mentioned. I was that love-lorn teenager wishing to be called out as special in that tiny Northwest town. The bits about the sports — Volleyball etc. — ring very true. She must’ve grown up there too. So in addition to being a fun if flippant read, it made me rather nostalgic. Thank heavens I didn’t encounter it when I was 16 or I would’ve thought that FINALLY someone UNDERSTOOD me!

Anyway, on to my next stop. I got off at Harvard Square, with fading self-consciousness, and went to DHR to get my hair cut. Dale did an amazing job — I think this is the best cut he’s ever given me. I opted not to add some clarification to a rather vehement opinion Rob held about the middle ages (see also: completely monolithic society with total control over everyone — so not possible), and switched conversation safely over to “Red Dwarf” instead (they’re huge sci-fi fans).

And I emerged looking fantastic. I went home and had dinner prepared by my husband, got the kids in bed, and finished reading Twilight in the bath.

Truly, fantastic.

I’ve had this theory about The Fantastic Mr. Fox ever since it popped on to IMDB. If stop mot

I’ve had this theory about The Fantastic Mr. Fox ever since it popped on to IMDB. If stop motion animation didn’t work for Wes Anderson nothing would.

Since the Royal Tenenbaums, or even before, Anderson has surrounded himself with actors, crew, and writers that love him like the benevolent micro managing dictator of a South American island. And because no one is saying No to him anymore, Anderson’s quirks and flaws have magnified to the point of eclipsing the movie itself. Wes Anderson had become a style rather than a filmmaker. I told anyone who would listen 3 years ago, that I didn’t know why Wes hadn’t just made all of the Life Aquatic animated. It would have been his best movie to date. So after waiting for The Dajeeling Limited to come in a lil red envelope, I thought Mr. Fox might be worth the $12.50.

Now right off, an aside in movie etiquette. The wife and I entered the freshly swept and now popcorn free theater, behind maybe eight people waiting at the door before us. We like the stadium seating first row with the clear view and the railing to put our feet up and easy access to the exit for when my invitable bathroom break. So naturally when we turn to our right and start to go down the row we were not expecting to be met with a demure little peasent clothed gatekeeper who promptly told us.

Bitch: Um actually I was trying to save those seats.
Me: The whole row?
Bitch: Actually Im trying to save both these rows for my friends.

Both. Rows. 12 seats. 12.

I’m willing and prone myself to saving a seat or two, but it takes some nutsack hairier then her petulie stankin legs, to just claim up and claim the primest 2 rows in the theater like it was a Risk board and her armies were a scarf and her hippy communal sense of World Peace. The only thing that kept me from lowering a dumptruck worth of attitude, plopping down, and setting the rest of the row on fire was the fact that the row across from us was still mostly available and I don’t like to hit girls unless they hit me first.

The rest of her water and vinegar compadres wouldn’t begin arriving for another 20 minutes in a stressfully packed room and I did take an elevated level of satisfaction watching her fend off every third movie goer from taking the seats she reserved for her ascot and designer baseball hat wearing amigos.

By the way, this also goes for all you cocksocks that love getting in line for big movies (the Harry Potters and Twilights of the world) and letting all your giggly sorority sisters trickle in ahead of me so that the line, that had 5 people when I got here 45 minutes early, suddenly bubbles up like a stepped on garden hose to about 17-18 tards. If I see this at Avatar, I will pee on you.

That being said, when I came out of the theater I couldn’t have been happier. I was right; the genre worked like a charm for him. His quirks and nostalgia, instead of seeming over done, read like attention to craft. The normally wooden deadpan performances became whimsical and charming behind the smiles and wide eyes of animals in clothes.

Adding a new first and third act onto the story seemed surprisingly natural to the Dahl story. The heist film resetting felt especially comfortable in the voice of Danny Ocean himself, George Clooney. (BTW saw Men Who Stare At Goats last week. Wow what a waste of time. Nothing happens. And not in a good existential way. It’s a waste of actors, waste of decent subject matter and worst of all: a waste of Jeff Bridges.)

What at surface seems like, and is heavily promoted as, children’s faire, Mr. Fox harkens back to the Bluth and Watership Down 70’s that weren’t scrubbed to bubbly Disney perfection.

I know Wes Anderson will probably go immediately back to making live action movies that I have no interest of watching until they stream on Netflix, but I hope that he’s at enjoyed the process enough to continue to push the Wes Anderson style into new paradigms.

Cause who doesn’t love paradigms.

On a Sunday morning a couple of weeks ago, I was tired, dead tired. Seth was colicky from something I shouldn’t have eaten. Simon was miserable. Dinner was horribly late, and thus Samantha was very late getting to bed. I was up most of the night bouncing and soothing Seth’s tears and pain. When the alarm went off a couple of hours later, I set it for an hour later. I decided we needed sleep more than we needed Sunday school. When the alarm went off again, I turned it off, and informed Josh I wasn’t budging from the bed. And then Samantha woke up on her own. She was so excited that it was Church Morning that I drug myself out of the bed after all.

An hour later, I did feel better, and we were able to leisurely leave the house. I thought Josh had let her know how late we were, but right before we got out of the car, I turned around to remind her that we were here in time for church, but not Sunday school.

Her excitement abruptly ended. She didn’t say anything, just looked up at me in misery. I finally asked, “Are you okay, Samantha?” In the softest voice, she answered, “I’m so disappointed.”

We haven’t been late since.

The weather in St. Louis has been rainy and gloomy lately, and the only thing I want more then soup

The weather in St. Louis has been rainy and gloomy lately, and the only thing I want more then soup on these types of days is a nice big cup of hot tea. So, I ventured out into the pouring rain and found myself at Mai Lee (8440 Delmar Blvd), the dodgiest Vietnamese restaurant around. I was by myself, so I sat in the corner of the restaurant and listened to everyone’s conversations. I ordered the spring rolls with no pork (shrimp only) and a #25 soup. The soup had tofu, noodles, and lots of vegetables inside. The spring rolls came out incredibly fast, and the dipping sauce on the side is a peanut sauce, with a thick consistency that is absolutely to die for. The peanut sauce has small shavings of peanuts inside, and the spring rolls are loaded with rice noodles, shrimp, and lettuce. The pairing of the rolls and the peanut sauce is a great appetizer to get your senses going…especially when you are in the mood for some Vietnamese. My #25 soup came out shortly after I had gobbled up my spring rolls, and it came in a large bowl with a side of lettuce, limes, jalapenos, and crunchy vegetables. I loaded my soup with the crunch, the lettuce, a few squeezes of lime juice and I dove right in. The soup is fantastic! Lots of vegetables (carrots, mushrooms, baby corn and etc…), great flavor, and best of all- it was hot. My rainy afternoon was made into a healthy and delicious one after my short trip to Mai Lee. I love this place.

Impossible by Nancy Werlin A good part of being a teenager is the uncovering of mysteries about one

Impossible by Nancy Werlin

A good part of being a teenager is the uncovering of mysteries about one’s own self. Lucy has more of a task with this than most teenagers since she is the target of an ancient curse, one based on the song Scarborough Fair. In a contemporary teen setting, Lucy must first discover the nature of a curse that threatens to irrevocably determine an unacceptable fate. Then, with the help of foster parents and a loving boyfriend (as well as the modern advantage of technology) she must try to break the curse.

A little of the supernatural really makes this story of strength, courage, and love sparkle. The obstacles are powerful, the drive for resolution is intense, the strength of love is thrilling. Teenage girls in my eighth and ninth grade classes last year were thrilled with this book. While there is some violence and moderately inexplicit sex, including a slightly surreal rape scene, the overriding theme is the power of love and resolve in overcoming adversity.

There has been more than enough chatter in our comments sections to know that we fans are not happy with the way most of our favorite Marvel characters are portrayed on screen. Marvel Studios has given us two of the best comic book movies we’ve seen, Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk.; movies that have given fans hope for their future projects. Here’s where the problem arises: the Marvel movie universe will NEVER be complete without the ability to intertwine Spider-Man, the X-Men, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four into the same continuity as the Avengers. It’s time they put their money to good use and buy back their character’s rights that are currently held by other studios.

So, over the weekend I saw Gran Torino with my dad. Amazing, really memorable.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, and he also played the leading part (Walt Kowalski).

IMDB gave it this summary:

“Disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possession: his 1972 Gran Torino.”

Truthfully, it felt a lot more like that. It felt more like: “Walt Kowalski sets out to accept himself and the things he has done in the Korean War in looking to reform his Hmong neighbor, after the death of his own wife”.

It was so amazing. I will admit that I haven’t seen any other Clint Eastwood movies, but he made a fantastic grumpy, bitter old man. This is a movie you need to see.

Though I’m sure that a lot of people don’t, if you do have a problem with cursing be warned that Clint Eastwood curses excessively. Though, I think it adds to his grumpy old man charm.

Trailer please? Your welcome.

Our final stop was the restroom. Josh attempted to go in by himself. The monkeys broke free and raced after him, throwing themselves through the door ahead of him, nearly knocking him down.

Samantha announced, to the entire men’s restroom, attempting and thankfully failing to incite her brother, “Watch out! We’re going to get killed! We’re going to die! It’s the bathroom of death!” She howled, reveling in the sound of her own echo, in the depths of her drama, “It’s the Potty of Death!” If the bathroom had been empty, I’m sure she wouldn’t have said a thing. She was gleeful at her own daring, braving the Potty of Death.

I don’t think I want to go back to that store this month. I think I’m going to hide in my hole, with a pint of chocolate ice cream, scooped with chocolate cookies.

There is something about Charley Harper’s work that sets me aflutter. And I am especially partial to his commercial work for some reason (as opposed to his fine art prints which are lovely). We have the Sierra Range poster framed in our bedroom and I find new shapes and lines, angles, and connections in it all the time. The poster, and several others, are available for practically nothing at the US Government Bookstore. Shipping isn’t swift, but the price is right. So, if you are looking for holiday gifts or you yourself want to collect some Harper, but can’t afford a print, this is the way to go.

One word though, the large posters really are huge and they aren’t standard frame sizes so you’ll end up shelling out bucks for the frame. Still, a huge, colorful fun way to fill your walls.

Last year I managed to snag this memory game and more at Old Navy, as seen here on the always enjoyable ohdeedoh.com:

And some more fantastic Harper work courtesy of the folks on Flickr:
