REVIEW:

Truly a fast-paced book that you just can’t dare keep down for the fear that you’ll miss out on something in the few seconds that it will take to continue reading it.

The mystery is so very mysterious that I finished the book in a matter of hours and was relieved to find the mystery unveiled and all the puzzle pieces fitted into place. The suspense is unnerving, and the plot keeps thickening at a regular pace; it is well nigh impossible to keep from biting your nails in anticipation of what will happen next.

The latter part of the book is kinda the unwrapping of the entire suspense that has been built up in the former half and the whole thing has been so brilliantly put that even after the story gets over, it leaves you with a sense of an adrenaline rush.

DESCRIPTION:

‘Fear is the Key has a plot that will require a lot of willpower to stop you looking at the last page.’ Sunday Mirror

A sunken DC-3 lies on the Caribbean floor. It’s cargo: ten million, two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in gold ingots, emeralds and uncut diamonds guarded by the remains of two men, a wife and a very small son. The fortune is there for the taking, and ready to grab it are a blue-blooded oilman with his own offshore rig, a gangster so cold and independent that even the Mafia couldn’t do business with him and a hired assassin. Against them stands one man, and the skeletons in their watery grave are his people. His name is Talbot, and he will avenge their murders.

‘Excitement and violence … the pace never slackens.’ Scotsman

EXTRA TIME HEARTBREAK FOR BRAVE SWIFTS

Heybridge Swifts departed the FA Cup for another year but not before pushing Farnborough through 192 minutes before a goal was scored over the two matches.

Swifts had a good opening first half and at times didn’t look intimidated by the higher league opponents. The referee was Mr Venamore who officiated the original fixture with afew dodgy decisions and Farnborough fans were soon on his back when things didn’t go their way.

Swifts had a good amount of possession early on, moved the ball forward and seemed reasonably comfortable in their Cherrywood surroundings. The first chance fell to the visitors after a link up between Coleman and Codling. Coleman curled a shot from 19 yards that was an easy save for the keeper.

After Swifts wasted an early free kick, Boro broke away with Ibe through the middle, Ibe fed the ball to Bubb who’s low drive just went the wrong side of the post, although it had some fans in the Main Stand thinking it had gone in.

Heybridge had a good opening ten minutes but every now and then Farnborough would step up a gear, McMahon hit a left footer just wide shortly after.

Nick Muir was unlucky to see his 25 yard free kick deflect off Coleman for Swifts on 16 minutes and then a minute later Muir found a gap in the wall as he took a free kick from 25 yards but keeper Barnard had a comfortable save.

Swifts were frustrating their opponents and when Ibe blazed over from close range on 34, the home crowd were having their patience tested. Four minutes before the interval Steve Bourne got in a great tackle and came away with the ball, ran from the half way line to the by-line before pulling the ball back for a Codling header that fell just wide.

HT: Farnborough 0-0 Heybridge Swifts

Nine minutes into the second period Farnborough got Bubb into a shooting position in the area, he played in McDonald eight yards out and he blazed over much to the disgust of the home faithful. Kezie Ibe smashed the ball inches over on 55 and within a minute Boro went closer still as Bubb got a shot in from the left side of the box, it beat Sanders but not the woodwork, the rebound saw Bubb stick out a leg and guide the ball onto the other post as pin ball came to Cherrywood Road, Morris-Sanders then made a follow up save from King leaving the home fans scratching their heads as to how they hadn’t scored as Heybridge made a miracle escape with a miracle push away from Morris-Sanders.

Swifts brought on Ben Hull for Goodwin on 70 minutes as the game began to enter the final period of the 90. When Ibe was dragged down as he turned onto the ball to surely score in the box the referee blew for penalty, only thing was the offside flag had already been raised and after a brief chat with the linesman the ref withdrew the spotkick Farnborough thought they had.

The Farnborough side of the press box was becoming restless, pacing the walkway in front of the impressive dining lounge, they were itching to report a goal, eight minutes from time Nick Muir almost grabbed a Swifts winner when he let fly with a 30 yard powerdrive that Barnard managed to tip over the bar. Heybridge had worked had all night at defending, clearing, moving forward to try and shock the Southern Premier side and it was down to a fingertip save that denied them glory. The Referee found alot of stoppage time but eventually extra time was confirmed and a late night on the cards in Hampshire.

FT: Farnborough 0-0 Heybridge Swifts

John Saunders replaced Ben Codling on 97 minutes and the danger man Kezie Ibe was replaced two minutes later by the home side who brought on Anthony Thomas.

In the 103rd minute Swifts were beaten by a thunderbolt from 22 yards that flew mid-air and soared into the net by Bradley Bubb and so after 192 minutes of this tie we finally had a goal and even a Premiership keeper wouldn’t have stopped the blistering shot.

Like so many matches in the Cup, one goal can lead to another and another and when McDonald shot from close range on 112 and doubled the lead the game was over, still there was time fot Thomas to quickly turn Fisher and drill a shot into the bottom left corner on 117 minutes and so Farnborough had scored three in fourteen minutes.

The story behind the result is that Swifts worked hard, weren’t afraid to go forward and continually frustrated Boro with good teamwork, big defensive clearances, playing as a unit and it was such a shame that it wasn’t just the opening goal that beat them if they had to go out because what a goal it was.

567 watched the action under the floodlights as Farnborough progress to the next stage where they will play Salisbury City at Cherrywood Road on Saturday 24th October as they look to make the First Round proper in November and who knows maybe Southampton could be on their way in future rounds.

AFTER 90 MINS: Farnborough 0-0 Heybridge Swifts

AET: Farnborough 3-0 Heybridge Swifts

Teams: Farnborough: Richard Barnard, Sacha Opinel, Nic Ciardini, Jack King, Steve Robinson (C), James Smith, Daryl McMahon, Gary Holloway, Kezie Ibe, Dean McDonald, Bradley Bubb: SUBS: Orlando Smith, Anthony Thomas, Simon Wormull, Jamie Stevens, Jean Sylvain Dossou, Owen Price, Adam Doyle.

Heybridge: Ollie Morris-Sanders, Jake Gibson, Ryan Hull, Luke Fisher, Philip Goodwin, Wayne Semanshia (C), Steven Bourne, Liam Coleman, Ben Codling, Nicholas Muir, Ricky Griggs, SUBS: John Saunders, Reece Morgan, Mark Crick, Ben Hull, Aaron Holford (GK)

Referee: Lee Venamore

Assistant Referee’s: Nick Iddiols and Alan Morley

Considered wrap: Heybridge will soon climb the Ryman Division One North based on their Cherrywood Road efforts, they gave it their all and the experience of this cup tie will do them no harm. The whole team worked hard and did their best, they so nearly nicked it late on so when the legs recover the only way is up that league table.

TWO wacky students are spending the next six months walking from John O’ Groats to Land’s End – with each pulling a fridge behind them.

Marcus Dean and James Miller, both 18, are making the long arduous journey in an effort to raise cash for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The intrepid duo will be walking up to 15 miles per day with their fridges and hope to be back home in time for Christmas.

The students, originally from Farnborough, Hampshire, have just completed their sixth form studies and are taking a year out before embarking on a university course.

Having made the long journey north by car at the weekend the super-fit pair will now walk the length of the British Isles and hope to raise around £10,000 for the needy charity.

Can’t wait to see Scotland

Marcus said: “The idea was first borne after we both read the Tony Hawkes book ‘Walking Around Ireland with a Fridge’. It seemed a really fun idea and before long we were looking into how feasible it would be.

“We bought a couple of fridges and began our training around the South Downs. We’ve been walking about 20 miles a day with the fridges, but that was on really flat ground.

“I think walking in Scotland will be a very different matter.

“We can’t wait to get started and are really looking forward to seeing the beautiful scenery in Scotland. We’ve never been north of Edinburgh before so it’ll be a whole new experience for us.

“I just hope the weather and your infamous midges are kind to us.”

Marcus and James will spend most nights under canvas with the pair looking to stop at B&Bs once a week for a comfy bed and a wash.

The plucky teenagers are hoping to pick up donations for the Alzheimer’s Society from passers-by and members of the public as they make their way south.

James said: “The charity is close to my heart as my grandad has developed Alzheimer’s over the last few years. It’s been heartbreaking seeing his decline, but, hopefully, we can raise some much-needed cash for the charity.

“I think the Scottish public will be very hospitable and we’re both looking forward to seeing the country and meeting a lot of people on our travels.

“Our friends and family were very skeptical at first, but now they are all very jealous about what we are doing.

“It’s going to be a great big adventure and we can’t wait to get started. We know how friendly the Scots can be and hopefully they will welcome us with open arms when they see us out walking.”

Charity delighted with effort

Marcus and James will spend around two months walking their way through Scotland during their epic trip which started on Saturday.

Neil Hunt, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “We are delighted and grateful that Marcus and James have decided to take on this unusual challenge to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.

“One in three people over 65 will die with dementia and there are people from Land’s End to John O’ Groats affected by this devastating condition.

“Funds raised by people like Marcus and James really help us to make a difference to the lives of people today while searching for a cure for tomorrow.”

På Earl of Camden. Cider. Livemusik.

Mesar…

Ta-ta!

My whole day today has been consumed with trains. I have been on trains, waiting for trains, running

My whole day today has been consumed with trains. I have been on trains, waiting for trains, running for trains and thinking about trains. I’ve talked to people on trains, eaten on trains, people watched on trains, eavesdropped on trains and have been a passenger on a grand total of 6 trains.

I had a client meeting in Surrey so I got the tube to Paddington. At Warwick Avenue a very heavily pregnant lady got on the tube. There were no seats left, but there weren’t that many people standing so she was highly visible. She had a big round bump so was obviously pregnant, not sporting a big ‘oops I ate too many pies’ kind of belly.

Now I know most people are in their own little world on the tube, with their eyes closed, noses buried in books and papers or studiously looking at their shoes. Those people are excused for not offering her a seat. What can’t be excused and who should be publicly chastised, were the two women in their late 20’s who looked up, clocked her preggy belly and then quickly looked away in case she caught their eye. I was absolutely horrified. Within earshot of the two offending creatures I told the pregnant lady that I couldn’t believe that no one had offered her a seat. She wasn’t bitter, she smiled and said she never gets a seat and she is used to it now. The two girls were now extremely uncomfortable, squirming in their seats. They couldn’t help but cast furtive glances at her swollen belly, like they’d been told not to look there but just couldn’t stop themselves. I was like a one woman advocate for giving up your seat and kept staring at them, amused by now at their discomfort. A prime example of ‘do unto others…’ One day they or someone they care about may be in the same situation. I will happily give up my seat, even halfway across the carriage and when the person is grateful that small act of kindness and human connection makes the world a better place.

I shot them one last withering glare as I bustled off the train and into the chaos of Paddington. I didn’t have much time to spare and couldn’t see my destination on the board but the girl at the information counter said I needed to grab my ticket and bust a move over to the Reading train on platform 8. What she didn’t say however was that I needed to change at Reading. As we pulled out of Reading station an announcement came over the PA system, next stop Taunton at 10.45. But that was over an hour away. I thought the PA operator had made a mistake and smiled, the start of daylight savings can really mess people up. But when she read out all the stations and mine wasn’t one of them my smile faded. I asked a guy sitting across the aisle if Taunton was by Surrey and he responded that it was in Somerset. How could that be? Then the information lady’s instruction that my train was to Reading started to make a bit more sense.

I am determined to look at the silver linings in my ‘Day of the Trains’ experience so here they are:

* Lawrence, the very lovely and helpful train man wrote on my tickets so I wouldn’t get charged. That would really be adding insult to injury wouldn’t it, being charged for being an idiot.

* A very lovely supermarket girl served me instead of going on her lunch break, after I explained I was about to miss my train. She also gave me my orange juice for free and wished me godspeed as I walked in a super fast unflattering, skipping, running, walking fashion back to the station, lest I miss my train out of Taunton.

* My client was most understanding about me arriving late afternoon instead of 10am and he got a bit of a chuckle out of it.

* Luckily the magic of technology enabled me to work most of the time and my iPhone battery lasted long enough for me to remain in the work loop (although I did have to keep turning it off to preserve battery)

* I got to experience the delights of Somerset, albeit whipping past at a hundred miles an hour.

* Ok this one is a bit of a stretch but I am determined to look on the bright side – all that waiting around for my connecting trains helped me to learn the art of patience.

The irony was, if I had gone to Waterloo instead of Paddington it was a direct connection to my client site in Farnborough and I would have been there in an hour, not 7 hours!

Who knows, another upside about this could be a newfound hobby. Anyone up for a bit of trainspotting this weekend?

Police have arrested nine men who are suspected of being involved in football related violence, at Ash Vale Station, Surrey. The men, all Aldershot Football Club supporters, tried to attack Brentford Football Club fans on a train from Aldershot to Ascot. The incident followed the match between the League two sides back in October last year. Aldershot Supporters attempted to board a train whilst police escorted the Brentford fans. The nine males were, six from Aldershot, and the others from Fleet, Farnham and Farnborough. They were arrested followed an investigation into CCTV footage of the incident. Police have banned the males involved from attending matches and travelling on trains around the time of Aldershot games.

Aldershot football fans arrested for violence
