Oggi ho un paio di cose da dire.

La prima è che sto leggendo un libro bellissimo.

La seconda è che ieri sono andata in segreteria studenti.

Partiamo dalle brutte cose e passiamo a quelle belle. Sono una di quelle che preferisce lasciare in fondo le cose che piacciono di più. Come quando hai un bel piattone con due cose. Una ti piace meno e l’altra molto molto di più. Da che parti? Io parto da quella che mi piace meno, così poi posso godere l’altra. C’è chi dice che sarebbe meglio partire da quella che piace di più, metti caso che poi non si faccia in tempo a godere in fondo – ovviamente inteso in senso metaforico e non di un mero piatto di erbette e patate al forno -, ma io sono fatta così.

Ieri sono andata alla segreteria studenti. Ero abbastanza tranquilla, nonostante andare in qualunque segreteria studenti sia come decidere di tirarsi una rivoltellata in fronte. Pensavo che dopo essere riuscita a uscire indenne da esperienze di vera e propria guerra alla segreteria studenti di architettura di Firenze, quella del Politecnico di Milano fosse una passeggiata.

Non mi sbagliavo di molto, ma l’incompetenza arriva a limiti che non ci possiamo nemmeno immaginare.

Segreteria nuova, palazzo gigante con monitor dappertutto per indicare i turni di attesa. Una divisione sistematica per argomenti – le categorie arrivavano almeno fino alla q, fate voi – e salette d’attesa abbastanza confortevoli con possibilità di utilizzare anche i computer (chiaro, solo nel sito del Politecnico, quindi utilissimo).

Prendo il mio biglietto contrassegnato con la lettera G – tasse. E mi siedo ad aspettare. Passa oltre mezz’ora senza che la lettera G compaia mai nel monitor. Comincio ad agitarmi e spazientirmi. Ma cosa sta succedendo? Possibile che il sistema informatizzato super figo nuovo di pacca si sia dimenticato proprio della mia G? Carrellate di R, T, perfino Q passavano senza che la G si facesse vedere.

Finalmente compare una G: avevo non uno, non due, ma 8 numeri davanti. Presa dallo sconforto mi armo di pazienza e attendo.

Dopo un’ora (il ritmo si era velocizzato un po’) finalmente è il mio turno.

Ah, non vi ho detto il problema per cui sono andata in segreteria. Questa settimana scade il termine per l’iscrizione alla sessione di laurea. Ci si può iscrivere solo online e il sistema del Politecnico alla fine dell’iscrizione mi ha dato non uno, ma due problemi. Secondo “lui” non ero in regola con le tasse e non avevo compilato il maledetto CV online. Conoscendo le lungaggini burocratiche volevo evitare di rimanere esclusa dalla sessione di laurea per un melodramma amministrativo, quindi mi sono mossa verso la segreteria per vedere di risolvere vìs-a-vìs la questione.

Corro verso il mio sportello (a quel punto la tipa dello sportello tasse era impazzita e aveva cominciato a far passare i turni senza nemmeno darti il tempo di percorrere il corridoio)e presento il mio problema per scoprire che non era un problema. Semplicemente il Politecnico ti gira questo avviso a mò di terrorismo psicologico, solo per tenerti sulla corda. In realtà devi solo pagare la tassa di iscrizione alla sessione di laurea, e sei a posto (cosa che avevo puntualmente fatto quella mattina). Va beh, un’ora buttata nel cesso per sentirmi dire che si divertono a farti stare in pena quando ti manca poco a discutere la tesi e sei già abbastanza agitata per i cavoli tuoi.

A quel punto ho un lampo di genio. Penso di poter chiedere alla signorina dello sportello tasse se il problema del CV online è della stessa natura. Ovviamente la signorina dello sportello tasse non sa come rispondere, anche io come penso di poter chiedere alla signorina dello sportello tasse una cosa che non compete perfettamente nella categoria G?? Che stupida.

Mi rimbalza sullo sportello a fianco, dicendo che mi ha inserito lei nella lista d’attesa e che devo solo aspettare che il mio numero compaia sullo sportello 17.

Torno a sedermi aspettando pazientemente, quasi sicura che il problema fosse dello stesso tipo: puro terrorismo psicologico.

Aspetto. Aspetto. Aspetto. Dopo mezz’ora vado dalla signorina dello sportello 17 e le dico che quella di fianco mi aveva rimbalzato su di lei, ma sembrava che io non volessi essere convocata dall’antipatico sistema informatizzato di chiamata dei turni. Miss Simpatia (aka la signorina dello sportello 17) non mi degna di uno sguardo e mi dice di aspettare il mio turno. Torno a sedermi mestamente.

Altra mezz’ora e un po’ irrigidita – avevo menzionato che le sale d’attesa erano abbastanza confortevoli? – mi muovo di nuovo verso la signorina dello sportello 17, stavolta con cognizione di cause. Avevo osservato il monitor attentamente e vedevo che tutte le volte che chiamava un numero c’era indicato che non nessun altro era in attesa. Mi rivolgo a lei con un po’ più di convinzione e le dico che non capisco perché non mi chiama e perché secondo il computer io non esistevo. Finalmente Miss Simpatia mi guarda e dice: “ah forse la signorina delle tasse non l’ha spostata sulla mia lista. Va beh, si sieda” con fare scocciato.

Sorridente mi siedo e le spiego il mio problema. Risposta: “ah, non si preoccupi, il computer fa sempre così per darci il tempo di controllare che lei abbia fatto tutto. Quindi se lei ha compilato il CV online non c’è problema”

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Ecco, lo sapevo. Ma zozza puzzola maledetta. Ma non potevi dirmelo prima?? E sbotto.

“Scusi, ma non poteva degnarmi di uno sguardo quando sono venuta qui prima? Ho appena perso due ore per niente. Bastava che mi ascoltasse un 10 secondi netti senza rispondermi male”

“Ma io non le ho risposto male.”

Ah ah ah. Ero talmente innervosita che le ho fatto il verso. Capito? Il verso… Una bambina di 12 anni, ecco cosa sono sembrata. Però l’ho fatta incazzare (risultato ottenuto!). E mi ha salutato con un freddo “Arrivederci signorina”. Inclinazione del tono simile a quello di un razzista appena uscito dalla messa che si trova di fronte un ragazzo di colore che gli vuole vendere un libro sulla carità umana.

E me ne sono andata. Con i miei problemi risolti, ma con un incazzo degno di Nobel per l’incazzatura.

E adesso il libro bellissimo.

Normalmente non mi piacciono i racconti. Li trovo troppo veloci e sbrigativi. Ho fatto un’eccezione perché mamma mi ha detto di comprare il libro per lei, ma ce l’ho ancora io per motivazioni lunghe da spiegare. L’ho iniziato due giorni fa e questo racconto mi ha lasciato con il cuore un po’ più gonfio. Si intitola “Nuvole” e racconta di un dialogo in spiaggia in Croazia tra una ragazzina adottata da italiani di 11 anni e un signore malato terminale.

Inutile cercare di descriverlo. Inutile riportare degli stralci. Per la sua intera lunghezza era illuminante e dolce, drammatico e idealistico. Il dialogo tra i due passa da banalità come la bambina che chiede al signore perché non si vuole abbronzare e perché non fa mai il bagno a questioni intense come il perché esiste la guerra e quando sia giusto difendere i propri ideali, anche se sbagliati ma sorretti da buona fede. La ragazzina sveglia e brillante, con una parlantina che esiste solo per chi è ancora bambino è descritta meravigliosamente dai suoi discorsi e dai suoi ragionamenti. Il signore, ex combattente che aspetta la sua fine, è dolce e triste e paziente e sognatore.

Il tutto si conclude con i due stesi su due sedie sdraio sulla spiaggia che cercano di indovinare il significato delle nuvole.

So che queste tre righe non rendono giustizia al racconto, e so anche che dall’inizio di questo post qualcuno si poteva aspettare di più per la parte bella. Ma come le patate arrosto finiscono sempre troppo in fretta mente le erbette rimangono lì troppo a lungo. Beh anche per l’incazzatura e i bei libri c’è la stessa proporzione.

The Blueprints Database has a massive repository of blueprints of just about anything that gets blueprinted. While the coolest section is probably the science fiction one (check out the Rebel X-Wing from Star Wars above) they also have aircraft, tanks, phones, etc. They also have lots of ships. It’s a pretty frustrating find two days after I finished drafting a 1 900-component icebreaker for a university course. Wanna know what’s even more frustrating? The one on the site is better.

The Blueprints Database

The long-awaited new Guinness spot from AMV BBDO, which – as might have been expected – is a mega-production.

New Delhi is the National Capital of India and one of its most fascinating cities. Being the Political centre and having the second largest metropolis by population, the city has a strong effect on the people of India and the direction in which the country has developed.

I love Delhi for its amazing diversity and interesting culture. The markets, the temples, the bustling business, the stunning sunsets and the great night spots. I would be difficult to ever get bored in this city. Here are 8 of my favourite things to do and see when in Delhi:

1. Bahai Lotus Temple

This is a temple dedicated to the Bahai faith and is a more recent addition to the architectural jewels of Delhi. I have never been close to it but I have driven past many times and it is just as spectacular at night as it is in the day. Reminds me somewhat of the Opera House and the Waratah Flower of Australia, maybe that’s why I like it so much. It took me at least 4 sightings of this to finally get an understanding of what it was and it is always at the top of my list for must sees in Delhi!

2. Qutub Minar

The World’s tallest free standing brick Minaret. An islamic structure which has a number of beliefs surrounding it. The intricate detail and craftwork which covers the entire structure is worth a look alone. Entry here is cheap and there is a fabulous mix of cultures all marvelling at the magnificence of this unusual sight.

3. Dilli Haat Markets

Resembling the traditional craftsmen and trade markets, Dilli Haat offers the traveller a chance to experience a unique style of shopping . It’s the first permanent fair for regional foods, crafts and cultural activities. It’s a completely new experience and a great day out.

4.Red Fort

The Unesco World Heritage Site which could easily be mistaken for the Taj Mahal…. except that it’s red. I was very confused when I first saw it as it was so similar to the Taj Mahal in style, but once you see them in comparison, you understand the difference. This is where the Prime Minster addresses the people at the celebrations of Independence day, 15th August. If anything, it’s a beautiful building to see, octagonal in shape as is the style of such Islamic architecture.

5. GK1 M- Block Market

A trip to Delhi is not complete without visiting this more upmarket area and the great set of shops and stalls located at the centre. The area is called Kalisah and it’s where the wealthy come to do their lower end shopping (so my high end.) There is fabulous jewellery, great snacks, luscious hair and beauty salons and shoe stalls as far as the eye can see. You may even spot an Indian Celebrity (I saw the queen of Beauty and skin care products of India… well, you couldn’t miss her! Diamonds covering every spare bit of flesh- LOVE IT!

6. Shalom (Restaurant)

Amazing Mediterannean lounge bar with great decor and a very trance vibe. You can smoke sheeshah (hubbly bubbly) with flavours like apple and cherry and you can sip on sumptuous cocktails! Chill out sessions playing in the background with low lighting provide the prefect relaxing atmosphere for a great night out.

7. New Delhi Parliament

The Indian Parliamentary Buildings and India Gate are essential to the Delhi City Tour. It’s best to go here with a guide who can explain the area and chances are you will probably only see it from the car. Security is quite strict in this area and it can be difficult at times to get close. It was only in the 1920’s that Parliament was moved to Delhi from Calcutta and it has remained their since.

8. India Gate

A slow drive down the Rajpath will allow you ample photo opportunities of the India Gate. This is a war memorial to over 90,000 Soldiers who lost their lives serving in World War 1. It’s a magnificent structure and a testament to the Indian people and their contributions during British Colonialism.

I hope you are able to see some of these great sites in Delhi. I strongly recommend going on a city tour or hiring a tour guide for one day to really get a good understanding of the history of the city and the many facets which make it the wonderful city it is today. To find out about the best markets and where to eat, chat to a local. The Indian people are very friendly and always more than happy to stop and give some advice to visitors.

Nuclear waste stays harmful for an incredibly long time; the signs at the United States’ Carlsbad disposal facility warn people not to dig or drill there until at least 12 000 AD. This leads to a considerable problem. What if the inhabitants of the 210th century don’t know how to read or speak English? They probably won’t understand what a radiation warning symbol means, either.

That makes it rather difficult to find ways to ensure that these radioactive tombs are never opened. Even if they could understand the warnings, are you sure they’d pay attention? Modern archaeologists frequently disturb the tombs of Egyptian Pharohs, despite warnings of a plethora of hideous curses.

The United States Department of Energy has allotted $1M to figure out some sort of acceptable 10 000 year marker system for their waste burial sites. Slate has a fascinating article on it. An exceprt:

During a 2004 cleanup operation at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state, personnel digging through a trench uncovered a safe containing a glass bottle. And inside the bottle, white sludge. Tests identifying the substance as a type of plutonium gave way to more tests until, in the Spring of 2009, scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory revealed what, exactly, the crew had uncovered: A 1944 artifact from the fledgling nuclear weapons program—the oldest existing sample of bomb-grade plutonium from a nuclear reactor, with a half-life of 24,110 years. Although this sexagenarian sludge isn’t dangerous to touch—its particles are too large to penetrate skin—it’s poisonous if swallowed or inhaled and will be for centuries to come. Yet it was housed in a flimsy receptacle that should rightfully contain nothing more toxic than bleach. In the rush of nuclear discovery, the mid-century scientists never paused to consider that a trespasser might happen upon the safe and crack it open.

Since that time, “deep geological disposal” has replaced shallow trenches as our preferred nuclear-waste-storage technique. But another, more abstract problem—raised by the Hanford message in a bottle—remains unsolved: not how to store waste but how to label it. Not what container to use or where to bury it but how to explain the long-term dangers of what’s inside to a trespasser. This seemingly simple conundrum (just use a radiation hazard symbol!) is complicated by the fact that such a trespass would prove lethal if it took place not only in 60 years but in 10,000 or 100,000. China, the planet’s oldest continuous civilization, stretches back, at most, 5,000 years. And the world’s oldest inscribed clay tablets—the earliest examples of written communication—date only from 3,000 or 3,500 B.C. It’s impossible to say what apocalyptic event might separate 21^st-century Americans from our 210^th-century successors. Successors, mind you, who could live in a vastly more sophisticated society than we do or a vastly more primitive one.

I just read a fascinating article on the Santa Fe Reporter about the hype surrounding the apocalypse prophecies surrounding 2012. From the article:

So it is that on this day of love approximately 30 Santa Feans afflicted with the 2012 bug have come to hear from a speaker who claims first-hand knowledge of Mayan traditions. They sit quietly facing the guest of honor, Lina Barrios, a middle-aged woman from Guatemala who dresses in colorful Mayan garb. She stands in front of a table displaying the latest work by her brother, Carlos: The Book of Destiny. It is one of more than 500 such books; 2012 is the only year besides Y2K with its own entry in the Library of Congress’ catalog. Barrios’ book, endorsed by something called the “Council of Mayan Elders,” contains useful info such as the Mayan sign under which Bob Dylan was born.

First, the good news: “2012 is not a date of destruction,” Lina Barrios says. Rather, it will mark the start of a new astrological cycle, one that will usher in humanity’s return to nature.

Barrios belongs to a camp that believes the end of the current 5,125-year Mayan calendar cycle will accompany a planet-changing wave of energy. In this subset of the Mayaphile subculture, some see the beginning of new religious movements akin to Mormonism or Scientology. For this group, 2012 is to be welcomed—much like Barack Obama’s presidency, which Barrios says was foretold by the ancients.

I especially liked this paragraph:

As Lina Barrios abhors plastic, Carlos disdains scientific thought. “Caught up in worshiping reason and ignoring abstraction, the West is adrift,” he writes.

In attacking reason itself, Barrios may have misdiagnosed the world’s troubles. Nevertheless, it’s hard to argue that the West is on a steady course toward greater human fulfillment.

“It’s dissatisfaction with existing mainstream religions that draws people to these beliefs systems,” Hoopes says. With America’s post-war secular religion—progress—failing to deliver, 2012ism represents a kind of backlash, a mellower, Santa Fe-style version of the anti-government “Tea Parties.”

My Oh Mayan! [Santa Fe Reporter]

I recently did a photoshoot with my wonderful photographer: my Mom! As I work on my singing, recording and album, I want to make sure I have some great photos to share with you all. I hope they can be an inspiration to you!

I am so interested in the American tour that Sarah Palin will be promoting this week for her book Going Rogue: An American Life. I think there is something we all can learn from this. If anything, it is a media spectacle unlike anything ever seen before: Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska, who makes history as the first female Vice Presidential candidate for the Republican Party, dishes her perspective on the inside story behind the McCain campaign. While I haven’t read the book myself, (I plan on buying a copy soon,) it will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the end and how it will bode for the future of national and global politics, if at all.

C’è chi dice che Milano è brutta, grigia e triste.

Che va troppo veloce, che la gente se ne frega, che è sporca e cinica.

Che c’è sempre brutto tempo, che non dà soddisfazioni, che bisogna sempre correre e che la gente si accalca e non si riesce a respirare.

Che c’è lo smog, troppo traffico, guidatori isterici e caos dappertutto.

Tutte queste persone avrebbero dovuto essere con me ieri notte quando ho girato l’angolo di via degli Orefici e mi sono trovata davanti allo spettacolo di una piazza Duomo deserta.

In quella piazza Duomo io mi sono sentita bene, coccolata e benvoluta. Mi è sembrato che la piazza mi abbracciasse e mi dicesse che non importa se tutti pensano sempre male di Milano. Perchè Milano ti affascina e ti lascia senza parole.

Perchè sarà anche vero che la gente corre e c’è troppo smog. Ma certi luoghi ti lasciano semplicemente senza parole. E ti puoi sedere e lasciarti abbracciare senza pensare. E stare bene e fregartene per un attimo.

Just in case you haven’t felt your skin crawl enough today, io9 has a list of 25 of the Scariest Scientific Experiments Ever Performed. Above is a picture of the Stanford Prisoner Experiment:

Philip Zimbardo’s Stanford prisoner experiment took place in the 1970s. The psychiatrist took 24 undergraduates and assigned them roles as either prisoners or guards, in a mock prison on campus. After just a few days, 1/3 of the guards exhibited sadistic tendencies, two prisoners had to be removed early due to emotional trauma, and the whole experiment only lasted six of the planned 14 days. It showed just how easily normal individuals can become abusive, in situations where it is encouraged.

Another one on the list is this one (not for the faint of heart), a Soviet experiment/propoganda video from 1940 to re-attach severed dog heads:
