Being a vertically challenged person (right at 5’4”) I’m not always a “petite”, but not usually a misses size either. Buying slacks and jeans can be a challenge because the “short” or Petite” lengths can be too short while the regular lengths are sometimes 3-4” too long! I’m not averse to having things altered, but these Curvy style khakis happened to be the perfect length to wear with heels so I snapped them up. I’ve already worn them several times and they are so comfortable!

I tried several different shirts this morning before settling on the light blue t-shirt, white cardigan and scarf. I almost omitted the scarf – it’s pretty big and until I figured out how to tie it I was worried it looked too bunchy. I think it’s a nice compliment to the outfit – what do you think?

One the trickiest aspects of finding your style is learning how to pair tops and pants/jeans. The key is proportion. If you ever check out the “fashion police” photos of celebrities you’ll see that’s one thing the critics focus on – and criticize – most often. A blousy top with wide leg/flowing pants or skirt makes even the thinnest super model look heavier than she is. The blouse in today’s outfit is a good example. I tried this blouse with khaki pants and quickly decided that skinny jeans were a much better option for me. I could have tucked the shirt into the khakis for a more tailored look, but today I was going for comfort so that option was out! The outfit would have been ok without accessories, but I love the way the pearls and silver chain look against the coral. What do you think?

I’m showing today’s outfit two ways, but there are at least three other items in my closet I could have used (denim skirt, black walking shorts or white denim skirt). The printed tank is a recent purchase from Target, and the khaki pants were purchased this weekend at the LOFT outlet store (I absolutely love the LOFT! 40% off everything this weekend meant some really great pieces were added to my closet!) I love how different the tank top looks when paired with the jeans and khakis. One way to change up a look is to add an accessory – like the hot pink bubble necklace and light blue cuff bracelet in the second outfit.

This week’s challenge: Take one or two pieces from your closet and see how many different ways you can wear them. Think outside the box! Pair a printed tank or t-shirt with a chambray shirt, cardigan or blazer you’ve never tried before. Add a scarf to a plain shirt for a pop of color and interest.
