Glamour Health and Fitness would like to know what you think of the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl’s new

Glamour Health and Fitness would like to know what you think of the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl’s new look.

If you haven’t noticed, Sun-Maid’s newest commercials and advertisements depict a new icon – and she definitely looks like she receieved a makeover.

In fact, according to Glamour’s website, some bloggers are suggesting that it looks like she received breast implants.

After studying the difference for myself, I have to agree with those bloggers. The Sun-Maid Raisin Girl’s graphic designers have definitely been generous this holiday season.

Don’t forget to check out the history timeline of the Raisin Girl. Does this show how the media’s depiction of body image has changed throughout the century?

The before shot:

I want this haircut. Now.

During the end of last week and the beginning of this one I spent some time in the waiting room of a much esteemed doctor of psychology. Not for the reason you would normally think. This delightful fellow and his staff perform thorough evaluations of children with issues and Il Duce was there for his full battery of tests. As he floated in on his manufactured angel wings and put on his halo to confuse and charm the entire staff, I had spare hours to spend in the highly uncomfortable waiting room catching up on my magazine reading. I cannot tell you the last time I indulged in a fashion magazine. They always seemed so superficial after I had three kids, I mean, I barely had time to find a semi clean tee-shirt and new underwear. Who has time for all those rules, quick changes in style, heavy baubles and shoes that hurt?

Naturally, the first shiny fashion mag I picked up was Vogue, clearly deferring to the all-knowing genius that is Anna Wintour. While I HATE the number of annoying ads in her publication, I do like her photo spreads and cutting edge ensemble choices. I also think lightning shoots from her eyes and fingertips when she becomes enraged, but that’s another story entirely.

Vogue took me about an hour to page through and then I cleansed my palette with several gossip rags that I’m addicted to. Next in line was ELLE with Katie Holmes Cruise on the cover. First let me say that aside from her clearly dead eyes and half-smile, she looks fabulous. The orange dress, the statuesque figure and finally that KILLER haircut. This is coming with me the next hair appointment I have and I am demanding this adorable style.

This is something I will not be investing in. Nice idea though.

Now I can’t say that I felt entirely good about myself after all that eye candy and mind-blowing dress up fun but I did feel as though it was time to start moving toward the quantum leap that was going to be necessary to get me to where I could measure up to the average gal on the street. My own personal fashion apocalypse you might call it.

Proenza Schouler, I can get behind this WITHOUT the sock.

First I need to work on amassing the small fortune that is clearly needed for such an undertaking, but I am willing to settle for the baby steps . A much-needed cut and color ( to rid myself of unsightly grey) takes precedence over all other things and then we can talk about leaps and bounds.

Well i love the UK Elle, i do read sometimes the American, Finnish, Swedish and go thru the French.

– Sadly i don’t understand French.
- The Swedish has old news.
- The Finnish just sucks and is aged!
- The American just can’t compare to the UK issue..

I like the refreshing layout, the edgy ripped pictures.
Raw, highly modern but still suitable for young eyes too.
The layout of a half finished sketch book.

I just find the American to be too much polished, it doesn’t have the same feeling and a UK magazine newer let’s me down.
It feels like a big treasure chamber.
Filled with beautiful pictures, info, columns, articles and allot of other stuff…

The Finnish one just shouts “we are a magazine for oldies” The layout suck, the overall image of the magazine is just dated.
I don’t even ever think of buying it….

The Swedish one looks overall good, kinda Swedish, almost too polished.
But it has a bit of that UK Elle style that i like.
Just a bit too much “party party, were young, we are partying every weekend.”

Of the French one i can’t really comment, i cant read it so it’s hard to understand about it.
I know who’s on the pictures, but it’s hard to grasp a layout without the text.
But overall i like it… by pictures.

So i will just keep on only buying the UK issue, reading the French and Swedish at the library (if i feel like reading old stuff in Swedish..=__=)

Congrats to ELLE Magazine’s publisher Carol Smith and her ad sales team!!

The numbers for ad pages for this year are in: ELLE came out ahead of Vogue by 110 pages. Last year, ELLE trailed Vogue by 317 pages. This year, Vogue lost a whopping 900 pages. Vogue publisher Tom Florio is acting like everything is fine.

“I learned how important it is to lead the market in terms of editorial standpoint, versus heavily discount and use our editors to sell ad pages. What we saw happen this year, which we haven’t seen in a while, is the discounts were approaching 70 percent. Some of the deals that were being done were just crazy,” said Florio in a swipe at the competition’s wheeling and dealing.

New York Mag comments: “Just because Vogue hasn’t given up its taste for the finer things — or the same boring covers with the same five actresses on them month after month — doesn’t mean others won’t.”

“Digitized Luxury” (Fashion Week Daily)

In an industry where so much seems tenuous, e-commerce in the luxury fashion world has gained tremendous momentum. New York University marketing professor and Red Envelope founder Scott Galloway recognizes this reality, and along with other members of the NYU think tank LuxuryLab, has ranked 109 luxury companies according to their “Digital IQ Index.”

“Why Digital Agencies Are Indeed Ready to Lead” (AdAge)

Over the past 18 months, a great debate has consumed our industry: Are digital agencies poised to sit at the head of the advertising table? Depending on whom you ask and what you read, the answer seems to flip flop — with a majority of people still having reservations and making claims that digital agencies aren’t ready to lead.

“Facebook Targeting Fans’ ‘Connections’” (MediaPost)

To help marketers boost their reach on Facebook, the company has added an option that lets companies advertise to friends of their brand fans on the social network. The new “Friends of Connections” targeting feature allows you to “expand your audience reach by delivering your ads to the friends of people already connected with your Page, Application, Group or Event,” according to a post on the Facebook Ads Page.

“Fashion Mags Look for Rebound in 2010″ (WWD)

Fashion magazines’ full-year figures for ad pages aren’t as full-figured as in the past — but publishers hope their titles will begin adding back some weight as 2010 progresses. Of the fashion magazines surveyed by WWD, most suffered jaw-clenching declines in paging in 2009, ranging from the midteens to nearly 50 percent. In all, the category lost about a quarter of its pages this year, with those heavily weighted toward luxury seeing the largest losses.

A couple of weeks ago, I spent about half an hour at the newsagent’s, flipping my way through the glossy pages of the higher end fashion mags.

They all have something in common: they pride themselves on their unique outlook, their unique style, their unique models, etc. So be it: twins are unique, in their own similar sort of way after all.

For the past three years, the unique look (for girls in western metropolitan areas) has been a bohemian- 60s baby doll- rock- 80s trash mash up. The shorts paired up with stockings are slowly being phased out by stilettos. Podiatrists and chiropractors world-wide breathe a sigh of relief as the recession drifts away with the incoming tide of twisted ankles and spinal injuries.

Also, if you happen to not have trouble with your eye-sight, I recommend you give your retina a swift poke with an ice-pick: retro- frames are all the rage, don’t you know?

Then there’s the more urban (or suburban depending where you live) look: designer track suit and limited edition runners, or something of that nature. I’m not sure, I think bling may have come and gone, or may even have migrated to boho-trash quarters.

These looks, along with the timeless rasta/ bongo look, V-neck and blazer look, ‘Euro-trash’ fur coat look, are not so much ‘unique’, or new as they are means for individuals of acknowledging the codes of a social group.

This is where I get patronising: by following these codes, individuals are demonstrating their adherence to the common beliefs and values of this group and showing their desire to be seen as a part of it. They are conforming to established norms.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. Not that I am in any position to judge even if there was something wrong with this. I wear jeans and bathe. I’m sure this has met the general requirements of a social group out there, and that its universal chairperson has chalkedup one more for its global membership figures.

This diatribe was brought on by a comment made on a Bruce Springsteen performance, saying that the ‘The Boss” had a lame and conformist stage presence. Someone else pointed out that Lady Gaga (ugh) is better. I set out to prove that Springsteen was conforming neither at the time, nor would he be considered particularly conformist by today’s standards.

But is it worth it? Need I point out that he just seems to be doing his own thing? Need I ask since when doing your own thing and not adopting a clearly identifiable un-cliché (and therefore Uber cliché) attitude is proof of a conformist attitude?

I shan’t. I will simply politely agree to disagree. And find out if membership to that social jean & soap -loving group entitles me to any benefits.

The Beautiful talk show Brit Alexa Chung chalked it up with V amgazine. Talking about how she meets and greets her guest and also dishing about how Snobby and serious many new yorkers are. I mean, we all know that New York is the city of DREAMS!! well at least that’s the vibe I got when I went on my highschool trip there. Let me tell you, I spent one day in New York and I instantly fell in love. Even though our hotel room was painted lime green, smelt like paint, and if you were claustrophobic you’d die within seconds, I still loved every bit of it. Every since I left New York, New York my life has never been the same. All I think about is being in New York but I can see how Alexa Chung can find many New Yorkers to be complete deutsche bags, because when I was there, obviously the word “excuse me” wasn’t breed in many new yorker childhoods. Here’s a little piece of what I found entertaining from the interview with Alexa Chung.

AC I don’t really have any friends in America.
DB Ouch!
AC Well, I have some friends. But I’m working all the time, and, also, I just think that I’m a good judge of character.
DB And there isn’t anyone good to meet in this town?
AC I just don’t tolerate douche bags. You get them in England too, those people who just sort of hang out and hold coats or something. But there’s more of them here. It’s like they make jobs as friends, like your best friend is your stylist now.
DB What do you miss most about the homeland?
AC Life is a bit less professional in England, and it seems like everyone is on a bit of a jolly. Here you have people—and this can be a good thing—who take their job very seriously, even if they’re doing something awful.
DB Will you go back to England when this MTV gig is done?
AC I don’t know. I went to a wedding last weekend [in England] and when I got back here I was quite relieved to be home in New York. Whoa, I guess that’s the first time I actually said that and meant it: “Home in New York.”

I must say it was a good book, but was it worth my $24 i’m really not sure. I love Vogue and all and I buy their new issues every chance I get but I think I could have read everything they said on ehow. I mean no book in the world is really going to give you the key to successes unless it’s the bible, you just really have to go out there and get yourself. Much Love
