Last month I collaborated with Vault49 to photograph some cool 3D illustrations.  Here is the series.   I love the 3 Dimensional look.  My part in the process was pretty small.  It mainly consisted of controlling the feel of the shadows, managing the depth of field…and getting some super high resolution quality, so all that illustration detail would pop.

High End Bag Lady

Donyale Luna at the entrance to Avedon Fashion at the Detroit Institute of Arts

To some readers out there, the connection between high fashion and the gritty Motor City may seem like an oxymoron. But back in 1965, the idea was not so unlikely when Richard Avedon worked with a beautiful young model from Detroit  named Donyale Luna. As a tribute to this unique Detroiter, her image graces the banner at the entrance to our special exhibition galleries where she stands over 15 feet tall.

Avedon first began using African American models as the subjects for his fashion sessions in the early 1960s.  Donyale Luna had dramatic looks and a six-foot tall slender figure that suited bold and sometimes outrageous designs characteristic of the 1960s. Avedon photographed her for Harper’s Bazaar in 1965 and for Vogue magazine in 1966.  The Vogue sessions featured gladiator-inspired metal mini dresses of designer Paco Rabanne, and although Luna’s image (seen above) is considered to be one of the most iconic photographs of his career, it was actually never published in Vogue.

Fortunately, the Avedon Foundation has allowed one of very few rare vintage exhibition prints to travel with the show. It appears in the exhibition with other photographs of Penelope Tree and Jean Shrimpton – Luna’s model-girl contemporaries well known to the world of 1960s high fashion.

Luna was born Peggy Freeman in Detroit in 1945.  According to Duke University’s Richard Powell she was an aspiring actress active in Detroit theater circles in the early 1960s before moving to New York City to pursue modeling and acting. After working with Avedon, she scored assignments with other high profile photographers including David Bailey who shot her for a cover of British Vogue back in the 1960s. Luna also appeared in a small number of films – perhaps most notably in Italian director Federico Fellini’s Satriycon in 1970.  She passed away in Rome, Italy, well before her time, in 1979.

Beachy editorials are usually saved for the summer, but how refreshing to bring sand to the beach in the crisp fall months. Anja Rubik hits some delectable poses in each of these shots, making me long for a stroll next to waves and seagulls. I love this editorial because it is appropriately fall while still taking advantage of the scenery.

And Anja Rubik, with a clean face and bold lip, sure knows how to take a photo. No flashy lights or glam backdrops required.

Decide what kind of model you would like to be. Technically, anybody can be a model. However, do remember that if you don’t meet certain requirements, the work available to you will be incredibly limited, and you may have to compensate in other departments (reliability, technique, etc).

Fashion modeling is no longer limited to just the “perfect” people anymore with the great looks, superb hair, and a Barbie-doll figure. Particularly in recent years, the fashion designers have started to realize that by only targeting the “perfect” people, they were ignoring a large portion, indeed a MAJORITY, of the audiences they could potentially target to sell their merchandise, accessories, and fashions.

Fashion photography is nowadays considered as an art. Though it mainly depends on commerce, one can pursue it as a career. Contemporary fashion photographers regard themselves as artists that can reinvent and invent various photo shooting styles and techniques. For those people that are always fascinated about photography and fashion, fashion photography can make a great career option.

Would you like to become a fashion model, but you have no idea what this type of model does? Let me tell you a little about fashion models. Their photos appear in magazines and catalogues to promote clothing or other accessories to customers and fashion buyers.If you are confident, aggressive, intelligent, resistant to peer pressure and willing to listen and learn, you have many of the traits that may help you to become a successful fashion model.

You must wear little or no makeup, clothes that show your body shape and take along snapshots of yourself. You do not need to take professional pictures, holiday snaps will do as they know what they are looking for. These agencies get bombarded everyday so don’t expect an overly welcome reaction. Alternatively you could send in photos and some respond to emails.

Preparation is the key to a successful photo shoot for those aspiring for, or embarking on the journey to become a plus size model. Confidence is always visually apparent; being well-prepared, well-groomed and relaxed equates a happy model, with shines through in print!

Get a suitable portfolio done to highlight your assets. If you want to bag loads of fashion modeling assignments, then a good portfolio is a must. Have a picture that make a bold statement about you and show you in the best light. Any basic and flexible portfolio should have a casual shot, a full length shot, a fashion shot, an exclusively styled shot and even a natural shot.

Other important ways to anticipate the trends is to subscribe to industry trade publications like Accessories magazine, Apparel News and WWD. These publications are essential especially if you are a boutique in a small town and do not plan to attend industry trade shows. These magazines also now have websites which give up-to-date trend reports.

Most of the work in the petite modeling industry involoves close up pictures of the face, hands, feet or other body parts instead of the body as a whole. The fashion modeling industry, however is very body focused, that is why they have such stringent height requirements for their models.

I photographed Martha and her daughter, Corinne, last December down in San Antonio when I was visiting my family. While I posted the “glamour sessions” with all my “models,” I didn’t post any of the mother/daughter duo shots. You can see the results of those glamour sessions posted here. Martha flew up two weekends ago to join us for our first-ever Tapas Party. She now has a whole new gaggle of friends in the D.C. area!

I have to admit this – recently, I haven’t been feeling very inspired by fashion. Is this blasphermous for a fashion blogger to be saying?

But I’d heard this said so many times on countless fashion blogs that I am certain that I am not the only one who gets these bouts of near-complete disregard for what is going on in the fashion world / blogosphere.

I guess we all need to seek renewal in other activities, especially when we place such intense focus on a particular subject (i.e. fashion) for a prolonged period of time (i.e. 3 years).

So, what have I been doing these days? I’d been watching films, reading books, writing at the other blog, eating a lot of good ramen, meeting new people just because, shopping online, planning my vacation(s), plugging into the general year-end festivities, thinking thoughts, drawing up fantastical 5 year plans, willing myself to finish my roll of film and waiting out my quarter life crisis.

I’d also been trawling the Internet. And look what I found

This set of photos on Flickr consists of “images from Paris cafés and nightlife in 1962, the same week Yves St. Laurent’s runway show vaulted Dior to new heights”.

Because the past is a warm, familiar place filled with good memories, while the future is just a terrifying void of possibilities (and impossibilities), I find these pictures of the ‘good old times’ (in Paris, no less) very comforting.

I do love the hair and make-up on the women. Why do we not do well-groomed and immaculate anymore?

Look at her hair and eyelashes! I want mine to be exactly like this.
