This episode of Katie is all about second acts. Both of our guests completely reinvented themselves, and even ended up with bigger second careers than their first. Their stories have inspired millions of us, and even if you’re not an NBA superstar or a super model, maybe they’ll get you thinking about your second act.

Magic Johnson is famous for one thing, but far more successful for another – his business ventures. The basketball legend is part-owner of the Dodgers, started a school for at-risk kids in Atlanta, has a new TV network and soon a Magic Mastercard. But his “Magic” touch extends even further than that. For example, did you know that at one point he owned 125 Starbucks? Katie asked “Magic the Mogul” what drives him to succeed.

After Magic’s diagnosis, he hosted an AIDS special on Nickelodeon and met a little girl he’s never forgotten. That little girl, Hydeia Broadbent, is now a 28-year-old young woman and she reunited with Magic on our stage.

We have a wonderful new line up for the fall fashion season. Francia has selected a large range of new jewelry lines to add to our impressive collections.

One of Francia’s favorites in Uno de 50. (One of 50). This inspiring jewelry line was founded by Concha Diaz del Rio and a group of designers in Madrid, Spain. The initial idea was to produce only 50 of each design so the owner could possess a very unique work of jewelry art. Due to the tremendous popularity of the jewelry the number was expanded, although the design studio still makes limited edition pieces.

The pieces are still designed and produced at their Madrid studio using a metal alloy layered with silver. The unique textures and shapes are a hallmark of Uno de 50′s urban style.

I love the Back-to-school sales, I love boots, and scarves, jeans, and sweaters.  I also love bold Fall colours.  Fall is pretty much my favourite (Fashion) season of the year.

And did I say how much I love the Back-to-School Sales??

Some of my “favourite” places that I like to browse through (browse, not shop), is Forever 21‘s online site, and H&M‘s website.  Mango has some really nice styles with reasonable prices, as does Top Shop.  So if I don’t actually purchase anything online, where do I actually physically go to shop??  To ye olde traditional Mall, plaza, or street shop.  My online perusals are usually to get ideas on types of items I’d like to buy, and on some price points.  I personally prefer to be able to physically try on my items, and to interact with sales people.  Also, I find that while I can browse some of these stores online, I don’t actually like going into these stores.  I know, I’m strange.  What I mean, though, is that sometimes I’d prefer paying higher prices for higher quality, and other times, I don’t care about anything else except the size of my wallet.  Depends on my mood.  Lately though, wallet-size trumps quality (sort of), seeing as I am officially unemployed at the moment.

So what is this post about anyway?  Sales, or Fall Fashion??  BOTH.

I’m absolutely looking forward to matching up my boots with my jeans.  I also have scarves that are ready to be worn, and sweaters that are impatiently calling out my name.  I also LOVE my Fall/Winter coats.

With Paris refusing to reschedule their show to 1 day earlier, New York and london Fashion Week have altered their dates  a week earlier. New York Fashion Week will start 6th September – 13th September and London Fashion Week will follow on th 14th September – 18th September.

The British Fashion council published this statement yesterday;

‘The CFDA and BFC confirm the above dates for fashion weeks in September 2012. Both organisations remain committed to finding a long term solution that would see a confirmed Fashion Season where brands and designer businesses in all four fashion capitals (New York, London, Milan and Paris) can plan for the long term and when exceptional circumstances arise there is dialogue and empathy to find a solution that works for all.’

Location Scouting:

Donation bins are located throughout our cities. Many donation bins are directly collected by certain charities. Take note of what charity benefits from a bin in a certain location. In cities like Toronto, certain people live in certain areas. The Hipsters Hippies live in Parkdale, the Double Income without kids in the Core Financial District Condos. The bins that collect in these various areas will collect a certain average of donation styles. These bins then pool into certain shoppes. If you look at the front facade of your favorite thrift shop, many times they post what charity benefits from the sale of the items. This directly correlates with the neighbourhood bin collection. One of my favorite locations seems to collect ALOT of designer samples. New with tags, all in a certain size, some with the tell tale SAMPLE written on them. Its not a coincedence, the bins that drop there are collecting from a certain area. Perhaps one person is dropping mad quantity of samples they can’t use nor want to deal with.

Fabrics:

Fibre Content:

Get to know the sheen of different fabrics. So you can quickly spot a silk from a polyester. A linen and a cotton from a blend. Or a linen blend Wools from acrylics. Amoungst the sea, when you have the eye for fabric content, it cuts down cheap poorly made items from well designed, high quality with luxury fabrics. Note: chiffon tears and frays easily in the seams and hems. A chiffon purchase has to be carefully inspected even with tags. dupioni is a poor resale. people often wash it and realize their mistake. linen is also a winner though oddly I almost always find linen items have a stain somewhere. Look for the rigidity of a linen thats never been washed, you’ll usually find its still got the plastic doodad from a store tag that ripped off. Perhaps it was a poor fit and the soul couldn’t return the item without full tags on. Wools: watch out for telltale pin holes of a wool moth attack.

Textiles:

Whats a jacquard vs a print vs a mass print or screenprinted silk. You can be guaranteed that if an item is a handprinted silk its worth something and will feel and look glorious in your wardrobe. You get to know what 1 cm’s worth of a shoulder of an item looks like and you simply pan past the ‘George’ polyester prints without even seeing them and zero in on the rare TALLA hand printed silks. If you frequent fabric stores, you’ll begin to learn the texture of printed fabrics and yarn dyed fabric. Block printed silk vs polyester. The nubby feel of a complicated silk to an acrylic or linen. etc etc.

If a designer has taken the care to select a quality, luxury or intriguing fabric, you can be guaranteed that you’re looking at ‘something’ whether you recognize the name or not.
Note:

Color or Print:

It helps to know what colors were popular when in fashion or textiles. Since I am a ‘downlo’ nerd, I know what colors in sync by reading up on Pantones season predictions. Gives me a sense of what season the item may have come from. Patterns are the same. I identified the 1cm shoulder of the Paneda Covalin poncho by the buttefly pattern peeking out and recalled a runway show I recently had seen photos of. If you know what patterns are in vogue currently or recently, it helps you pick out the samples or someones cast off guilt purchase. It also informs me of a designer who keeps in the know vs mass produced stuff.

Its not about Quantity of Cheap Clothing

I don’t secondhand shop to get staples or cheap stuff. If I wanted to buy a 10$ t-shirt I’d go to Walmart. I only look for stuff that punctuates or would be featured in my wardrobe.

Labels

I’m less worried about scoring names. Names mean nothing if they look stupid on me or are fussy and uninteresting. Certainly Calvin Klein makes some nice staples but are they worth trawling for in the sea? Maybe sometimes if they’re an item that jumps out at you.

Quality

Watch out for tears in seams or anything that looks worn. Not worth it. Only buy stuff if its still rigid, with no wear. If you frequent secondhand shops often, you’ll end up with tidal waves. Its got to be 100% a purchase. Contrary to many, I don’t believe in having stuff altered that I buy secondhand. I’ve learned that if I bought everything that caught my eye or would make a kick ass investment and altered it, I’d have way too much crap and not enough time.

Fit

Its got to fit you unless you’re buying for resale. Don’t buy it if it doesn’t fit perfectly. Otherwise its useless.

it’s been an odd one for me this past couple of months, i started off hating nearly everything that was appearing in the menswear shows then slowly things got better and better especially as more womenswear was being shown. paris and milan, in my eyes, definately outshone london which i never usually think is the case. maybe my tastes are changing or maybe the designers that are usually my favourites aren’t going down my disired paths…hmmm.

the street style as usual was outstanding though which makes me wonder if i am not alone in my feelings?

In the midst of fashion season, between fashion shows, new collections, and buying a new wardrobe for fall and winter we forget the meaning of fashion. To express ourselves, or better yet have a little fun. Try blending in colors that are unexpected camel and black with even a touch of grey compliment on the neutrals. Materials such as leather and cotton give Italian and American styles a universal platform. Bring Mui Mui or Marc Jacobs hand bags and little thin lace-up booties pair well together with chunky knitted accessories and tops. Do not over think your mix and match decisions, play dress up like you are young again as long as it all blends in.

Every September, the doors of the fashion world open up to the unique and rich fashion culture of Positano. Positano is a small town perched on the coast of Amalfi in Italy. During the early 1900s, there was a boom in the shops and small businesses that provided highly creative and colourfully designed clothing, which helped characterize the inimitable Positano fashion.

Positano fashion is characterized by plenty of colors and a particular class of materials. The early production of Positano clothing focused mostly on the use of silks and jute canvas. Styles and designs were far-ranging; the more creative, the better. What’s important is that the attractive and fascinating look was achieved. The look of the Positano is one that commanded attention and turned heads, thanks to its use of bright colors and a lot of delicate tissue-thin materials adorned with a lot of sparkles. It brought to mind the sparkles of the Orient and the mysterious feel of sheer and soft fabrics, but with an earthly feel that represented the laid-back and simple life of Italy and the Mediterranean. This relaxed feel is also achieved by the carefree styles of Positano clothes, with shoulders bare and with free-flowing skirts. The attention-grabbing colors and adornment were symbolic of the Italian women’s confident and brazen manners, with their eyes to the world and not on the ground, and with vibrant smiles reflected by the shiny accoutrements of their clothing.

The birth of Positano fashion and its development was an answer to the tastes of holiday vacationers on the coastal town mainly because it was a mixture of sophistication and outlandishness. The vacationers, wanting to be free from their uptight routines, longed to lounge around in soft fabrics and loose clothes, and Positano clothing allowed them to enjoy this luxury without stripping them of their fashion sense and sophistication. Due to this, Positano fashion also expanded, soon including sea dresses and beach robes with soft gauze materials. This caused even more shops selling Positano clothing to open and more and more ideas joined the creative foray.

The seductive aura of the Positano fashion eventually caught media attention and sustained it for decades. It didn’t take long, thus, for Positano fashion to evolve. After all, even at the beginning, this Italian fashion culture had much potential for growth. For the next 60 years following the war, Positano fashion received an immense growth. What started out as a clothing trend blossomed into a much-awaited yearly fashion season that included not just clothes but also handbags, shoes, accessories, and costumes for both men and women. But despite such growth, the fashion of Positano still gave much importance to the strict use of known Positano fabrics to retain their authenticity.  Through the years, Positano became known as a shopping icon with a twist.

As the new millennium emerged, however, there was a significant decline in the popularity of Positano fashion as the overall fashion culture continued to veer towards more classic and modern pieces. Several shops in Positano closed and only a few remained to continue the once beloved fashion tradition. Presently, Positano fashion still survives. In fact, it has recovered some of its former glory. The fashion culture has given rise to several different brands offering authentic Positano pieces as well as a string of imitators.

One of the authentic brands offering genuine Positano fashion pieces is Moda Positano. Moda Positano is a famous brand producing Positano clothing and other products. Various genuine Moda Positano pieces can be bought along the streets of Positano. Tourists staying all over the town including those lodged nearby at Hotel Poseidon can easily indulge their creative fashion sense with the creative offers of Moda Positano, which are scattered all over the town.

And now, once every year, the fashion thrives again. In September, the Positano season begins. In September, all the colors, the sparklies, the gauze, the sheer, the flowers, and the creativity comes out of hiding and once again makes up the classic Positano fashion.
