New Years Eve is right around the corner. What are your plans? Are you headed out on the town in sequins to sip champagne? Celebrating at an intimate dinner soiree? Or hanging at home for a super casual get-together?

No matter where you go, you need something fun to wear. To get you started here are some tips for selecting your look:

Focus on YOUR best asset – flaunt it and make it scream. If you have incredible shoulders, wear a halter, strapless or one-shoulder. If you have a defined waist, cinch it with a belt. If you have great legs focus on your hemline and show those shapely calves.

Dresses – Are perfect for any occasion, especially New Year’s Eve. When selecting a dress, first consider the fabric as it defines the ‘dressy-ness’ level. Dresses made of jersey or soft cottons are more casual where as dresses made of silks, sheer or stiff fabrics are more formal and dressy.

Accessories – Really are a girl’s best friend. An over-sized cocktail ring, metallic clutch or dramatic, jewel encrusted chandelier earrings make any outfit dressier and more interesting. Think of your accessories as your outfit maker. Adding them finishes the look and creates style.

Embellishment – Any accent makes an outfit unique and special. Sparkles, sequins, feathers or fur create individually. The key to embellishment is balance, a little goes a long way. Don’t over do it.

Fit is critical! The most beautiful, well-made dress will look like a sack if it doesn’t fit properly. Tailor it – so it fits YOU perfectly.

If you’re headed out on the town for a night in sequins to sip champagne…. Go all out! It’s time for a cocktail dress, embellished jewels and all that sparkles. New Years Eve is a glamorous night. Bring on the glam!

One shoulder sunburst dress by Black Halo. This dress is for you if you have great shoulders. The billowy sleeve is soft and feminine! Jewelry should be kept to a minimum, but pieces worn should be bold. Try a chunky necklace or a huge cocktail ring. For makeup and hair, think modern. Sleek, pulled back hair keeps with the theme. Makeup should be strong and bold. A smokey eye would do the trick.

Teal dress by Catherine Malandrino. I love her signature tone-on-tone cutout detail on her hemlines. The sash tied at the waist gives hourglass definition and the bare shoulders, so sexy. Hair worn up or tied back in a messy knot with oversized chandelier earrings. Stunning!

Black knee length Daisy skirt by Heidi Merrick with winter floral silk top by Rory Beca. Pretty yet conservative from an exposure perspective. This is a great option if you don’t want to show too much skin. This winter floral is great for warmer skin tones. Make sure you really play up your makeup – a little bronzer adds warmth to skin. For a more formal option choose a black floor length skirt instead. Tip: A floor length black skirt is time-less and an AMAZING addition to any woman’s closet. It is classic.

Banana Republic Cleopatra-style silk, pleated dress. A belt at the waist creates shape as well as emphasizes the waist. The combo of the neckline detail and the skinny leopard belt are a perfect compliment. Loose billowy, soft, wavy hair and a bold red lip – perfect!

Brown feather dress by Elie Tahari. The combination of the lace and the feathers are ultra feminine without being over the top. So pretty! The feathers are the focus so keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum. Hair up elongates the silhouette. For makeup, focus on the eyes and balance out with a natural lip. Add sparkle to the eyes to up the glam effect.

Celebrating at an intimate dinner soiree? The range is a bit wider for this category. Some parties are dressier than others. So how do you know what to wear?

Consider the host/hostess – are they formal or casual? If host/hostess dress to the nines most of the time – you should too! If they are more relaxed, their party will be too. What is the food situation? If it is a formal sit down, multi-course meal, it’s dressy. If it’s mingle, self-serve buffet style. It’s more casual.

Either way you have a wide range of options – going from most to least dressy here are some ideas:

AllSaints Aditya Dress – this black wrap dress features the most beautiful, puffed hemline. The oversized collar, wrap waist and flowing hem create the most beautiful hourglass shape. This is my version of the perfect LBD (little black dress.) It is classic with a funky twist. Hair up is a must to show off this beautiful collared neckline. Stiletto boots – like stretch knee-high, ankle or booties add funk and edge. Pony hair animal print chunky heels do the trick too! Have fun with this one.

Navy, silk, ruffle top by Amanda Uprichard and champagne, silk, box pleat skirt with Stella & Dot floral necklace and Calvin Klein oversized gold weave belt are a bit more casual but still dress the part.

Black leather skirt by Vince, fur vest by Du Monde, black t-shirt by Rubbish and three strands of black beads by H&M offer an edgy, fun yet comfy option for a more hanging-out get together. Hair pulled back in a sleek, low pony keeps the look clean and edgy. The leather skirt can be substituted for skinny black jeans too.

Hanging with friends for a super casual get together? Yup one of my favorites! PJs baby! Some years you’re just not into all the hubbub of NYE! So go with it and go comfy! Fun, long sleeve t-shirt, maybe leopard PJ bottoms and pink fuzzy slippers. Pair it with a ponytail and no jewelry. Comfy and cute!

[worldnow id=6545624 width=420 height=278 type=video] DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Amy Hall could never fin

[worldnow id=6545624 width=420 height=278 type=video]

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Amy Hall could never find cool, hip clothes for her oldest son. When she got tired of searching for durable and fun outfits, she decided to make exactly what she could not find in stores. “He wanted a shirt with a T-Rex head on it,” Hall recalled. “I come from an art background and I just decided to make him one. And that’s how the whole thing started.”

Soon, other moms would stop her and ask about the clothes that her son was wearing. Hall’s experiment became a full-time business, which she ran out of her Dallas home.

In a year and a half, Hall went from making about a dozen shirts each month to 3,000 shirts each month, and moved the operation to a printing press. The business is called Grubbie Style, and it allows parents and kids to design their own T-shirts. They pick the shirt, design and color. “You can go online and literally, in three steps with your child, create a T-shirt just the way that you want,” Hall said.

The Grubbie Style website is now receiving orders from all around the world, and has even attracted interest from some Hollywood celebrities. “Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts’ son, Sasha, was photographed hailing a cab in New York wearing one of my robot tees,” said Hall.

The Dallas shirt-maker reached celebrity A-listers through a company that puts together gift bags. They asked to add her clothes to a back-to-school promotional gift. “We really sat down and chose things for the interest of the children,” said Hall, who decided upon a boombox design for Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony’s son, Max. Gwyneth Paltrow’s son received a shirt with an amp on it.

Hall tries to make every detail of her clothes appealing to young boys. She even puts the label on the bottom of the shirt instead of the back, where it could scratch the neck. Hall’s greatest sense of accomplishment comes when she hears from parents who appreciate the comfort, durability and unique chance to design the clothes that they want.

If you live in Fort Worth and want chic clothing with a hip contemporary edge but don’t want to drive to Dallas? You don’t have to!

a.hooper & co., owned by Emily Adams located in Chapel Hill, is exactly what your looking for! This cool, hip, sleek women’s boutique offers high-end clothing, jewelry, belts and handbags.

So how did it begin for Emily Adams? Funny enough she worked at a.hooper & co. for years and loved it so much – she bought it. That was five years ago and she’s never looked back.

Emily is Texas girl at heart – Fort Worth born and raised and a TCU Fashion Promotion grad. Emily has her finger on the pulse and understands the Fort Worth woman. She has honed and perfected the art of selecting wearable clothing. “Our pieces aren’t too over the top trendy because it is higher-end. We offer classic clothing – with a little bit of a contemporary edge. Clothing that will last season after season,” explains Adams. So how do they balance that small town feel? “We know many of our customers run in the same circles, so we buy limited quantities of our pieces to ensure that you don’t see your look walking all around town,” continues Adams.

a.hooper & co. focuses on separates that can be mixed and matched. Pieces that will compliment and add to what women already have in their closets. They carefully select their merchandise for their shoppers. They know what they like, know what they need and know what they want.

For fall a.hooper & co. is right on trend – long flowing maxi-dresses, luscious capes, sultry knits, jewel toned silk blouses, shorts (which are PERFECT for our Texas climate!) and small florals (which Emily pointed out she was very specific with her selection to be sure that these florals didn’t look or feel too ‘cowboy’.) Brands include high end classics like Trina Turk, Ella Moss, Velvet, Michael Stars and Joie as well as some more cutting edge like Karina Grimaldi, Graham and Spencer, Young Fabulous & Broke, Gemma, Parker and Madison Marcus.

And if you’re into jewelry – you will love the jewelry at a.hooper co. It’s cool, hip, and bold. There is great mix of delicate and dainty pieces as well as show stopping drama pieces. OOO La La! Most of the jewelry is designed by Texas native Amanda Sterett. Supporting local artists – love that!

CBSDFW.com Insider Tip: When you visit the store, be sure to say hello to their little furry helpers…. Lyle, Emily’s golden retriever and Layla, Nancy’s long-haired Chihuahua.

DALLAS (AP) - As the Dallas Museum of Art prepares to open an exhibit of Jean Paul Gaultier’s sometimes outrageous, always head-turning fashion designs, the city’s well-heeled residents are mobilizing.

Dallas is one of just three North American cities — along with Montreal and San Francisco — hosting the exhibit of works by the French designer. And while Dallas is not a fashion industry center like New York, Paris or Milan, designers and retailers know very well that some of their most devoted and fashion-conscious clientele can be found in Texas — both in Dallas and farther south in Houston.

“People take fashion here very seriously. It’s not exactly the same as it’s going to be in L.A. and New York … but it’s a much more exuberant style. I don’t think anyone ever comes to Dallas and comes to an event and are ever underwhelmed,” said Brian Bolke, owner of upscale Dallas boutique Forty Five Ten, which currently has a prominent display of Gaultier’s designs for customers to choose from.

Gaultier said he has been impressed with the style of the women he’d seen since his arrival to kick off the Dallas show. “I saw some women that were very elegant, super elegant. And that were even more Parisian than some Parisians,” he said.

New York City-based designer Elie Tahari, who this fall opened a store-in-a store in the Neiman Marcus at Dallas’ NorthPark Center along with his own freestanding boutique at the upscale mall, called the turnout for the openings “amazing.”

“It’s a big market for us and it’s a growing market. It’s a glamorous city and that’s the clothes I make,” said Tahari, who added that the line’s runway collection — its most expensive — is selling well in Dallas, which doesn’t happen in all cities.

Retailers say their customers in Dallas and Houston are sophisticated consumers who follow current fashion, have the money to spend on designer wares and are frequent travelers.

“I don’t know any designers that don’t like to come to Texas. It’s because they do so well here,” said Neal Hamil, who worked in New York City as executive vice president of Ford Models and director of Elite Model Management North America before returning to his hometown of Houston two years ago.

Hamil serves as creative director for Fashion Houston, which brings together designers to show their collections in Houston. New York City-based designer Bibhu Mohapatra, who was among those showing collections at the event, said that during his first visit to the state he noticed residents have “a natural flair and passion for fashion.”

The event honored Houston’s Becca Cason Thrash as its style icon and included a show of her designer collection, which included pieces by Alexander McQueen and Christian Dior.

Cason Thrash, an international philanthropist who has organized fundraising galas for the Louvre at the Paris museum and who shops across the globe, said that women in Dallas and Houston “are really chic and they really care about how they walk out the door.”

“They really turn themselves out. I have a great, great many fashion designer friends … and they all come here and say this is the greatest market concentration and research for us to see how these women put themselves together,” she said.

It’s customers like Cason Thrash whom Bolke thinks of when he’s searching for items that can’t just be found everywhere.

“Our customers travel so much. They see everything and they have access to everything, which is actually a nice challenge,” said Bolke, who added, “Women here are not scared of fashion with a capital ‘F.’ Here it’s a kind of sport.”

Ken Downing, the senior vice president and fashion director of Neiman Marcus, said these well-traveled Texans “become really great style ambassadors to this state.”

As the home of Neiman Marcus, Dallas began its flirtation with fashion early. The luxury retailer founded in 1907 has over the decades has brought famous faces including Coco Chanel and Grace Kelly to Dallas to receive fashion awards.

“Certainly, Neiman Marcus has had an enormous impact on the style knowledge that Dallas alone has had,” Downing said.

He noted that Neiman Marcus’ Fortnights, two-week celebrations of the culture of foreign countries which began in the 1950s, attracted attention partly because they were held in an era when there was less international travel.

“The great thing about Dallas women is they love to experiment. They’re not afraid to try the latest, the greatest, the newest and always look spectacular. How lucky to live in a city with so many gorgeous women wearing beautiful clothes,” Downing said.

With a thriving arts scene and a bevy of charity events to choose from, Texas women are often searching for gowns.

“They’re very chic, ladylike, feminine with an edge,” said Fady Armanious, store director for the Houston location of Tootsies.

Retailers say that women in Texas like to wear colors and also like to have fun with their fashion. For instance, says NorthPark fashion expert Victoria Snee, they might pair a sequined mini-dress with cowboy boots.

“Every vendor will tell you that they sell more color and more bold accessories here than anywhere in the country,” said Robbin Wells, executive vice president of the Dallas Market Center, which holds more than 50 markets each year attended by more than 200,000 buyers.

Designer Rafaella Curiel was among those from Italy who came to show her work in Dallas this fall as part of the Italian Fashion Expo at the Dallas Market Center.

“I think that women in Texas are very beautiful. They still dress in an elegant way and they like quality,” Curiel said.

The Gaultier exhibit opened earlier this year at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The show opens in Dallas on Sunday and runs through Feb. 12 before going to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and then moving on to Europe.

Olivier Meslay, interim director of the Dallas museum, said that the museum is already seeing visitor numbers well beyond the usual — the day museum members can get a sneak peak of the exhibit usually attracts around 300 people, but for this one they expect about 1,200.

Among those with plans to attend the exhibit are Dallas designer Prashi Shah, who after studying at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working for Bill Blass returned to Texas to launch her own lines.

“Every socialite in Dallas right now has their calendar marked for that event,” said Shah, adding that the exhibit has “been pretty much the talk of the town.”

CBSDFW.COM fashion blogger Allison Edwards recently sat down with fellow Dallas stylist and image consultant Bethany Buice Siggins on her business, the latest and greatest of fashion trends-past and present, and her new role as ‘mommy.’

How did you get into being a personal stylist and image consultant?

“I had been working in corporate for a decade, I just didn’t feel passionate about my job anymore. I started talking to a local businesswoman about other ideas to get the creative juices flowing. No one recommended to me to do anything with fashion, it just kind of came about! The Association of Image Consultants (AICI) website gave me some good information on how I could style and make money at the same time, other than celebrity stylists I didn’t know much about it! I found out that every day women needed my assistance, there usually was a reason for such things as transitions in life: weight loss, divorce, wanting a new look, or they were trying to get back into dating.”

You just had twins (Vivien and Nathan) this past December, how do you juggle being a mom and owning your own business?

“You have to have a strong supporting cast. I give John the best husband in the world award! I found that it has been a lot harder to get back into my work because I’m having so much fun with them, they are only babies once and I don’t want to miss anything. I have a nanny two days a week, so it allows me time to devote to the business, as well as squeezing in time when they sleep. I’ve learned clients have to have more patience with me.”

What inspires you personally as a stylist/consultant?

“First and foremost being able to provide the gift of encouragement and see the positives in life. For me I want my clients to be excited about their future, and happy with themselves and their life, I’m an eternal optimist and like to look at the brighter side of things, a forever cheerleader! I’m inspired by fashion and give those credit who are fearless with their style, ones that don’t rely on the opinions of others, wear what they want and go above the trends.”

Who has been a big influence on you as a person, and as a career woman?

“Hokey I know, but my husband again, the moment I met John, he inspired me to do what I want, he’s my biggest encourager and the reason I can pursue this.”

Also, how does your cultural upbringing influence you?

“Having been raised in the deep South, I hope there is always a measure of politeness and civility, respect in everything I do. We learn to say, “please, mam, sir, thank you,” it carries over into all of your relationships. I’m pretty bubbly and always laughing, so I have to be careful when I’m going through my clients’ closets. I had a client I was working with and I laughed about a piece in her closet, I wasn’t laughing at her, I’m always having fun, so I have to watch it when I’m in others personal space.”

What do you consider stylish in Dallas?

“It seems when girls go out, they go all out, there are a smaller group of guys who are styled in their looks. There’s a big disconnect between the way guys and girls look. Dallas style is on trend and people are not afraid to try new things, experiment a bit! So many people here in the city are from other places, it is a melting pot with a lot of flavors and fashion influences, so it’s hard to pinpoint one look. I say it’s a free for all!”

How has your fashion evolved over the years?

(Laughing and smiling) “I started out as a young girl being a fashion follower. When I got into my mid twenties, I was wearing pearls and sweater sets in the corporate world and had to buy and wear suits! As a child of the 80’s baggy suits with shoulder pads were in. Closer to my thirties I really started ejecting who I was and what I loved to wear, my fashion sense has changed a lot. I just got this great Alexander McQueen blouse from his final collection on Gilt Groupe.”

Do you feel Texas has its own style, or does it influence national trends?

“I definitely think designers over time, use Texas as inspiration. Everything is bigger and bolder here. I hope designers continue to use Texas style from time to time. Everybody thinks a lot of western wear when they think of Texas. Dallas is fashionable and on trend as Austin is into more casual, natural, and organic clothing.”

What services do you offer as a personal stylist and image consultant?

“My four main ones include a style evaluation, a color analysis, a closet editing, and personal shopping.”

What is a color analysis?

“Basically helping a client optimize their personal color scheme based on their skin tone, hair, and eye color. You are your own canvas and that dictates who you are. I use a color fan of optimum colors, over 1500 colors from the kit so everything looks like it flows together.”

How is your personal style reflected in styling a client?

“Hopefully not at all, my job is to find out as much as I can about my clients. I want to style them in an authentic way and how they should look. When I’m just helping with their closets, it can be a bit challenging with out the style interview I typically do, the client runs a risk of me putting my style spin on it.”

As a stylist, want do you want to be known best for?

“The whole part of getting someone, who they are and what they do! I want to project the confidence and the look of authenticity. I would love to do makeovers more with my clients. It’s not just about the clothes, I would love to help shop for the right hair products and tools, makeup, and the right makeup brushes, and teach them it doesn’t always have to be expensive.”

What words of expertise can you give women out there about dressing the part?

“Even when I was at the hospital with the twins for their feedings, I would still do my makeup, my hair, and put on nice clothes. I would run late, because I was getting ready. I wanted to look and feel like a normal person, that is who I am! It takes 5 seconds for a person to make a judgment of who you are based on your look and appearance. They decide immediately if they want to know you or even talk to you. Try and look your best every time you go out. You could lose business because you didn’t dress the part. I did a talk with some young high school girls and I told them you have to always be interview ready, dress as if you could be interviewed right then! Taking care of yourself is not superficial; it’s simply how you put yourself together and how you feel. Women who have babies, know their body changes, and life changes too, so it’s hard to get back into fitting in your clothes. Keep those clothes, as a mother you just have to know how to make a shift, a default. The way you look influences your attitude for the day. I go out for a bit during the day, but I still put on makeup and a nice outfit, it just makes me feel better!”

What does a regular work day/week include when getting ready for any event?

“Plenty of rest, drinking lots of water, and taking time to plan what to wear. You can’t just run into your closet, I start weeks ahead to in planning and may even practice with styles for my hair, makeup, and attire.”

What trends are catching your eye for the fall?

“Bold statements, colored fur, metallic fabrics, fishnet stockings, boots, capes, and lady like pumps. Red is the color of the season, which is my favorite color. I have this red lamb fur coat from the 80’s, I wore it in junior high I might bring out. I’m loving Louis Vuitton’s platform thick red patent boots and Miu Miu glittery platforms heels. I’m surprised how designers are using pastels and mixing it up. I like the knee-high stockings with boots but it’s not really my style. Makeup for fall is all about the red lip-poppy and bright.”

Where are your favorite places to shop?

I get a little bit everywhere, I’m a sale shopper and love mixing high and low pieces. Barney’s Coop, Vintage Martini in Carrollton, Ahab Bowen, Banana Republic, and even Forever 21 are some of my go to’s.

As a stylist, how do you see designs evolving each season or as trends come and go?

“I feel designers are having a hard time doing anything new, some are working on new textiles but it’s getting harder to make new shapes, new colors. You have to look at how many seasons revert back to each other, like the sixties pieces that are in. I like to make little shifts, I have my clients come up with a look book and tear out pictures of things they like or pieces they find on the internet and have them put it in a book.”

When do you know you have successfully done your job?

“I guess when a client tells me how good they feel and the positive feedback and response they get from other people. I feel good when they tell me that during the follow up I do with them. Ideally I would love my clients to consider working with me on a continual basis or at two to three times a year, it becomes a relationship.”

Bethany’s first passion is serving others, building her clients’ self confidence and showing them the attributes that make them distinctive and matchless.
Highland Park Village has been revamping its image in the past couple of years with the addition of stores like Diane von Furstenburg, LAFCO, The Marquee Restaurant, and now the Billy Reid boutique. 2010 was a great year for the Billy Reid brand. From winning the GQ Best New Menswear Designer Award to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award, the brand has received a lot of well-deserved new attention. Formerly at Northpark Mall, Billy Reid opened its new doors in early June and has already brought its cool, modern, Southern charm to The Village.

According to Dave Gates, the store director, “We wanted to reintroduce Billy Reid in Dallas. Smaller boutique style stores work well for us and allow us to be a part of a community, and moving to an established shopping village like Highland Park Village allowed us to have that feel here in Dallas.” When you walk into the new store, you immediately feel like you are in someone’s home. It is comfortable, charming, and filled with special pieces, clothing and décor alike. Says Gates, “Our new Dallas shop stays true to the Billy Reid heritage with old apothecary cabinets and reclaimed beatboard wood, and our favorite framed photos lining the dressing rooms. We even took it a step further with clean lines, and a few modern touches like the backlit bookshelves are a really cool touch.”

Billy Reid and Highland Park Village have already proved to be a great match and the relocation has already boosted business. “The whole vibe and feel of our new location is really the most noticeable change. Walking in our new Highland Park Village shop is really like walking into our home and we love that feeling,” says Gates.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - She started with that striped number that she’s been tucking into her skinny jeans, took out the floral skirt she hadn’t worn since last summer’s garden party and mashed them together. This chic look really is that simple if you stay within the same color palette. By keeping your shoes minimal you will definitely pull off a playful summer trend. Our Person on the Street, Tamara, rocked a fun juxtaposition that works for nights out on the town in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. See what you need to do to duplicate this very same look.

Striped Blouse

This breezy, lightweight blouse is necessary for the 100+ degree weather rapidly approaching our region. Trying to look cute in these conditions can sometimes get the best of us as we drip like rainbow Popsicles. However, this doesn’t mean we ditch fashion all together. Choosing airy fabrics outlined with nautical stripes will serve you well this summer. You could even get wild, buy them in every color and pair them with candy colored shorts as you head into the weekend. Check out http://www.JCrew.com for this shirt to fulfill all your sailor needs or for a more economical version try your local Target.

Floral Skirt

Ladies, we all know a floral motif cascading down your outfit screams the arrival of a new season. A flirty garment in your wardrobe, that can take you from a day in the office to the patios of Uptown, is just the statement piece you need. Just make sure to choose the right garden display on your skirt. Nobody wants to mistake you for the wild sunflower growing in the neighbor’s backyard. This colorful gem at http://www.anthropologie.com is sure to keep you in full bloom.

Strappy Black Sandal

There isn’t a piece of clothing that these pair of shoes will not compliment. With a lower heel you can rock them with every length skirt (or shorts) you have draping in your closet. Personally, I think the more straps the better. It is time to spice up your footwear with some hot summer steppers from Dolce Vita at http://www.Nordstorm.com

The Boyfriend Watch

With all the trend-setting garb we like to pile on our bodies, it is nice to know there are those classic pieces that take us from season to season. This style of watch comes in various colors, but note timeless shades that work with your skin-tone never go out of fashion. On the days you feel like jazzing up your boyfriend bangle add thin, textured bracelets for a more relaxed feel. So, on that note, stop stealing from your man’s closet and get Fossil’s lady version ($115) from http://www.Zappos.com. He will thank you later.

Tangerine Toes

With the splash of colors beaming from your floral skirt, it is now time to be that girl with the brightest pedicure on the block. Your toes are dying to mingle. They just told me. http://www.Essie.com has a large selection of vibrant summer colors to choose from at $8 a pop. All polishes are paired with equally charming names making them very hard to pass up.

Carry-All Pouch

To complete the pattern-mixing ensemble you will need a simple, clean-cut clutch. If you can’t afford the designer label no need to stress. The American Apparel version, which is being remixed in every way possible by fashionistas across the map, will compliment your look perfectly.
By Jenn D’Imperio reporting from Fashion Week in New York City On Monday morning (Sept 13, 201

By Jenn D’Imperio reporting from Fashion Week in New York City

On Monday morning (Sept 13, 2010) I had the opportunity to view Malan Breton‘s Spring 2011 showing at New York City’s Metropolitan Pavilion. Malan was the second contestant kicked off of the third season of Bravo‘s reality show Project Runway back in 2006, but the self-taught designer didn’t let that dissuade him from following his dream and creating his own path to the runway.

Malan Breton‘s Spring 2011 collection was presented with a live 65 piece orchestra, the Chelsea Symphony, and was based on the concept of “American sportswear meets Paris Couture”.

This was the first Malan show I attended and I was not familiar with his previous work. Malan’s first showing for Spring 2007 offered pieces for women that were flirty, fun, and daring – while still maintaining an air of elegance. This season, Malan played it a little safer. His silhouettes are clean and the designs are very wearable but slightly bland for my taste. (Then again, I tend to dress like Ke$ha when I go out on the weekends, so I’m most likely not Malan’s target market). His first womenswear collection was more my speed but this collection is perfect for a mature woman who wants to look classic and beautiful – without all the fuss and frills.

Malan Breton 2011

One item that did catch my eye was Malan’s version of the corset belt. The corset belt had a brief fling with “trendy” after Dolce & Gabbana premiered their rock n roll metal version (complete with key and padlock) a few years back. I’d love to see this sexy accessory make its way into the mainstream and Malan played with a much more wearable version by making it in black leather and pairing it with sleek gray trousers and a simple white top.

I absolutely fell in love with Malan’s current Men’s collection. Malan first branched out into menswear at his Spring 2010 showing and clearly that’s where his focus should be. Malan gave a refreshing take on the typical stuffy suit by using luxurious fabrics and made them perfect for spring by opting for some knee-grazing shorts and throwing in the occasional pop of canary yellow. A well-made and perfectly tailored suit on a man is a great way to grab anyone’s attention (especially mine!).

Dancers turned models, Brittany Franklin and Chase Finlay, broke out into a ballroom number mid-show which created an easy and fun transition from womenswear to menswear and the audience was highly entertained. Models carried umbrellas and paraded poodles down the runway and all kept their cool when the fire alarm went off during the show.

NYC Housewife Alex McCord walked in the show. Style expert Nole Marin, actress Denise Richards, Project Runway alum Diana Eng and comedian Gilbert Gottfried were all in attendance.

Check out a full video of the show here.

By Alison McLaughlin reporting from Fashion Week in New York City Rebecca Taylor – Studio I’m

By Alison McLaughlin reporting from Fashion Week in New York City

Rebecca Taylor – Studio

I’m starting to sense a theme here. Neutral is the “color” of the coming Spring/Summer season: Beige, Taupe, Ecru, Sand, Fawn, Biscuit, Oatmeal, Camel.

Rebecca Taylor‘s take on the now obvious neutral palate that dominates the coming Spring/Summer season took a trip back to 1970 with a breezy collection that sang a hymn to the styles of a simpler time. Waistlines were pulled up high to the… waist, if you can imagine such a thing in these hip huggy times. Shorts, skirts and wicked flared jeans were all taken to a higher level and it created a flattering, womanly silhouette all around. Tight in all the right places mom jeans these ain’t. Other throw back elements that peppered the feel-good line included patch pockets, snake skin and polka-dot – either in a blouse form or pleated maxi skirt, the whisper light transparency kept things sexy. Healthy jolts of orange and pink were added here and there to keep things from getting dull with sprinkles of crystal embellishment for subtle shimmer.

Real Housewife of New York Ramona Singer was front row and has been a Taylor fan for years. “Even before the TV show” she gushed “I was collecting her stuff. I’m petite and curvy”, revealed the spunky housefrau, “and I love the way her clothes fit my body – I need clothes that fit!”

Max Azria – Theater

The second of three collections showing this season Max Azria‘s signature line took the riot of taupe, white and black that dominates the season and allowed intricate piecework to define his eponymous high-end label. Diaphanous gowns of ivory, jet and biscuit sailed down the catwalk with effortless grace. Easy sophistication is what Max Azria is known for and notable guests such as Solange Knowles and Kelly Rowland seemed to approve of the clean lines and complex network of straps and geometrical cuts.

Carman Marc Valvo – NASDAQ Building, Times Square

“I wanted to recreate the idea of showing in an old Paris Couture house,” says designer Carman Marc Valvo of his decision to show at the NASDAQ building, “it’s intimate, it’s in the round, it’s in the heart of New York City and this year,” he enthuses, “we’re broadcasting live on the screen so everyone outside can have a front row seat. It’s instant fashion! Valvo’s return to glamour was presented in forms of midnight black and pure white evening gowns and dresses, carrying an early 1960′s motif to the modern age.

The View’s Sherri Shepherd, a devout follower of Valvo, came out to support the man who dressed her for her appearance at this year’s Academy Awards. “What I love is that his clothes are true to size,” she raved, “I don’t know what they’re doing over there in France, taking a size 6 and putting a 16 sticker on it…”

Gary Graham – Milk Studios

Always interested in performance and theater, CFDA Fashion Fund finalist Gary Graham showed a predictably gritty collection of utilitarian elements: mixed floral prints accentuated by an icy mint that matched the cold stare of the models. Their clockwork march and anemic demeanor set off the zombie flick chic of the dramatic pieces Graham is becoming known for. Of his process the self-proclaimed horror movie buff says “I think of this character that needs something for a reason,” “then it becomes a real piece of clothing that enters real life.” Khaki breeches and jackets with cargo pockets thrown over tousled feminine dresses are spooky yet still sweet enough for spring picnics. Handy, if Martians attack and you have to run to the hills. Gary Graham is available at ABC Carpet and Home as well as at his flagship location in TriBeCa.

Isabella Tonchi – Milk Studios

The 44-year-old Italian designer launched her own label in 2003 after a lengthy career working at labels such as Miu Miu, Calvin Klein and Versace. Tonchi’s stark showcase of simple shell dresses with geometric prints evoked a mood of crisp 1960′s pop art. Black and white is familiar theme for Tonchi to explore yet always presented each season with crisp invention.

Chrishabana Jewelry Presentation – Milk Studios

Chris Habana draws from a number of sources for his Spring/Summer jewelry collection entitled “Mon Amour, Mon Ennimi.” Pyramids, roses, crosses and thorns, the elements of love and hate displayed cheekily in glass cases with rubber safely gloves, as if they were enough to protect your heart.

Suno – Milk Studios

Finally, a collection that leaves out the threat of military invasion! Kenyan-born Maw Osterweis‘ presentation of bright, playful prints was a welcome sight after what is shaping up to be a taupe-heavy season. African prints are worked into a range of dresses with hemline that run the length of the leg – from mini to maxi and most points in between. Cool-cotton bikinis and sheer gauzy evening dresses and smart daytime dresses keep a sense of humor with patterns such a zebra, pineapple and floral.

“Whitney Eve” at Industria Studios

By Whitney Port‘s own, “Whitney Eve” is an unoriginal collection. Says the star of “The Hills” spin off “The City:” “It seems like everything has been created already, I guess I try to create the pieces that are out there but I put my own twist on it.” Whitney Eve’s Spring/Summer 2011 was a display of items you’ve been looking at all Spring/Summer 2010. One-piece romper? Check. Coral? Check. Bandage-style skirt? Check. It’s no surprise to learn that the inspiration comes from “the streets” and that when she designs she “keeps the every girl in mind.” No real concept, just copycat. As Port says “This whole line is reflective of feminine chic and whimsical street wear,” and, It’s true. It’s a reflection of themes conceived of ideas past.

The models channeled the depth of the collection’s intelligence with pinpoint accuracy. Lazily they stood twirling strands of hair, mouths hung open, staring off into nothing. There is no story behind “Whitney Eve” other than what’s doled out in half hour portions per TV episode. Indeed, a camera crew was in house following Port’s every move begging the question, which came first – the script or the sketch pad?

After Party Charlotte Ronson at Avenue

Once again a collection proved too popular to allow everyone inside so I missed out on Charlotte Ronson‘s 1990′s inspired collection. As the doors shut and Dinosaur Jr. came flooding out from behind we dashed en mass to the live stream to see the sweet, simple collection of tee-shirts under floral dresses (remember that look?!) chunky socks, knit caps and distressed denim. Twin sister Samantha Ronson provided the soundtrack to both the show, and, at the after party at Avenue in the meatpacking district which I did manage to slip into. Inside guest sipped bubbles and Effen vodka cocktails and devoured cult status pizza from Artichoke. Across the street Alexander Wang’s Carnival themed parking lot party was THE place to be with a line up of hopefuls stretched out around the corner. Midway rides and pleasures untold lay waiting behind the chain link barrier for those lucky enough to be on the list.

Verrier

Well, they can’t all be winners. I wanted to like this collection but the moment I spy a blatant knock-off, emotionally I check out. Verrier‘s Gatsby garden party was just awkward with Chanel jacket references that fell flatter than day old champagne. The crinolines-as-skirt concept is been-there-done-that and flapper style gowns were cute but too costume to be considered anything but. Sadly, the models weren’t into it and made no attempts to hide the fact. This is FASHION WEEK, ladies – SELL THE SIZZLE! Compared to Mara Hoffman’s presentation where the vamp was turned on full blast, Verrier played out like a little girl’s un-minded tea party. Annoying and unsophisticated.

Richie Rich

Designer Richie Rich and Ellen Degeneres.
Everyone was expecting a gong show and they weren’t disappointed. If they got into the Studio, that is. With tickets in hand dozens were turned away, myself included even though we all claimed to be “on the list.” With that in mind one can’t help but wonder if Richie Rich‘s club kid sensibility orchestrated the mass invitation to create mass hysteria. The hordes that arrived had to be culled by the fire department that threatened to “shut the place down” if the place went over capacity. With less than 1,000 seats to go around for the former Heatherette co-designer’s first solo show, the frenzy only set the tone for what was to be roughly 10 minuets of high theater (thankfully broadcast on the big screen in the media lounge for the unprivileged many).

A gaggle of ballet dancers opened the show, then socialite Tinsley Mortimer – fresh from the cancellation of her short-lived TV show – strutted down the runway in the first of what was to be a long line of very lady-like spring frocks. Adorable stuff. Richie Rich has matured as a designer, clearly taking inspiration from the friends he’s aging along with. However, the brief restraint quickly gave way to a succession of broody mannequins in an S&M themed parade that culminated with a snarling Ellen DeGeneres emerging from an explosion of silver confetti.

The scene was more camp than a row of tents. Richie Rich is proving to be a master of production as well as a designer to watch. Hopefully next season I get a ringside seat.
