I’ve been reading The Teen Vogue Hand Book – An Insider’s Guide to Careers in Fashion and decided to do a feature of each of the designers online.  I wasn’t too sure what all the Awards were for, so I’m looking them up on youtube and posting the information on The Idea Girl Says.

It’s part of my research for a new book that I’m writing called The Calamity Girl.

In book one she visits Los Angeles, California but only takes the time to visit a few tourist spots near Universal Studios.

In book two she returns to Los Angeles, California with Michael and she will be diving into the various subjects of interest in the area and writing about them for Gossip Tabloids, her newspaper.

Rachel Tornquist is a fictional character that will be travelling around the world and writing about her adventures in my chic lit The Calamity Girl Series.

As we go along and learn about the characters, her Sister Melissa is actually a Fashion Designer in the making.  So in order to appear realistic in the book I started doing some research on the Fashion world.

This book is a gold mine of information for all ages!

It’s fun to read, lighthearted and inspiring.

Amy Astley has created a colorful portrait in the day in the life of a fashion designer and she shows how the industry works from start to finish.

The highly previewed and anticipated collaborative capsule collection between KRINK and Levi’s Japan is finally released into the world to make your regular non-KRINK paint splattered denim feel slightly off color. The denim collection launched with a reception party and a bang on Nov. 13, a day prior to the actual release of the collection. To celebrate the collection marked by KRINK’s famed “paint drip”, Japan’s Low Three Jack was invited to put up fresh tunes for the party. Other than good music, shopping and autograph session with the brain of KRINK, Craig “KR” Costello, there is also a special KRINK exhibition, A Piece of Detail, set up in CINCH TOKYO. The exhibition features some of KR’s most memorable pieces such as Drip Paint Mail Box (which is coincidentally produced in Japan). H&M enlisted Terry Richardson to shoot Belarusian model Maryna Linchuk for its latest issue. Also known as the face of Miss Dior Cherie Fall/Winter 2008 campaign, Maryna Linchuk donned lingerie and put Terry Richardson in his element, prepping the photographer for doing what he does best– shooting sexy photographs of girls in seductive poses. Check out H&M’s lingerie collection that ranges from sweet to vampy and of course, Maryna Linchuk’s pretty perfect body.

Have you noticed the loose boots  the girls are wearing with leggings?  I think they are the exclamation point for an outfit that is mostly sleek, legging coated legs. They provide the contrast.

I had fun with this painting – playing around with a more illustrative style than I would ordinarily attempt.

Do you know what the biggest surprise that this 30 day challenge has brought me?

The realization that I can really be who I am with my paintings. I can be girly, or philosophical or just generally interested in the details of life.

I guess for a long time I thought that to be successful as an artist I had to find away to fit myself into a mold that I thought would appeal to almost everybody.

That’s a little bit crazy when you think about it. And in some ways I was pulling myself apart – avoiding some topics completely while trying to force myself into others that I wasn’t sure really fit me well.

There is a fine balance between valuing outside feedback and challenging yourself to be even more true to yourself as an artist. And if there is a short cut to figuring that stuff out I haven’t found it yet.

Walk into any store these days and you will find a slew of sparkle; but, when it comes to your shoes, there is only one sparkle that will fit–SEQUINS!

Sequins are one of the hottest trends in shoes right now, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. Sequins are actually a highly versatile shoe trend that even the tamest shoe-lovers can try. Sequin shoes come in all sorts from sneakers, to flats, boots and of course, pumps. Even better–there is a price point for everyone!

One of the keys to wearing sequins well is to remember that little phrase “less is more”. Trust me, I know it’s hard when you are true lover of glitz, but you will be doing the world a favor. These precious shoes stand tall on their own and should only be used to enhance your outfit. Think of them as your best accessory. A favorite style is with any type of jeans. Skinny jeans with sequined pumps is a killer look! Also, for the more daring–don’t be afraid to wear your sequins to work. Gone are the days where you need the sparkle to light up the night, if done tastefully with less as more, sequins can make you look like a million bucks and Ms CEO.

Be careful though, there are some don’ts. Most importantly, sequined shoes are almost like art, and you would hate to ruin the picture with a hundred other pictures hung on the same wall. DON’T wear sequined shoes with your sparkly Ed-Hardy shirts and embellished jeans, you will ruin the look and style of the shoes and just look a little silly. DON’T wear a sequined shoe that is beat up. If there are lots of sequines missing and strings hanging off your shoe–you need to invest in some replacements. Finally, DON’T think that these shoes instantly make you MJ or Liberache and save your sweet dance moves for your pre-gamming rituals.

Meet Lara Jade Coton, stunning and talented entrepreneur who set up her own photography business before she could legally buy a drink. Now 20, her fashion, beauty and portrait photography has been featured in Photography Monthly, Digital SLR Magazine, Aesthetica and other publications. As a freelance photographer, she counts BBC Audiobooks, Headline Publishing and Rock Love Jewellery among her clients as well as hip hop group Ill Defined and singer Laura Broad. Her work has been exhibited and sold in M1nt London and Cabinet des Curieux in Paris. She is currently represented by Sudest57 of Milan.

LLO: Tell us a bit about your style. What led you down the path of fashion and beauty photography?
LJC: I’ve always found fashion inspiring. I started off shooting a lot of fantasy work and self-portraiture, then once I moved to London, I had access to all the inspiring contacts and it went from there. I love fashion magazines; they inspire me to shoot more creative fashion. There’s a lot of standard fashion shots and ’safe’ shots nowadays and I like to go out of the box. I love pushing my ideas and creativity even further.

LLO: You started your own business – Lara Jade Photography – at the age of 17. What has been your most difficult challenge so far?
LJC: People taking me seriously! Starting a business at a young age means people find it hard to trust you – especially with bigger jobs. I still get that!

LLO: Where is your favourite place in London for a photo shoot?
LJC: I tend to shoot a lot in the parks around London – Regents, Battersea, Waterlow and Hyde parks - a contrast to what people would usually think of when they think of London. I haven’t photographed any urban locations (yet!) – I love photographing in natural environments, and each park offers a different perspective.

LLO: How has living in London influenced your photography?
LJC: There are many contacts here. Fashion & beauty photography relies on contacts and a good creative team. You can get both of these in London. It’s where the ‘fashion’ is. I have found it’s easier to work with modelling agencies and creative agencies – making that step up in my work to a higher level. A good team means better photographs!

I love Vancouver during the holidays. I go to every mall in search for that perfect gift. While most family request cash or gift cards, I still go out of my way to get that one gift to bring a smile to the ones I love. So, what to wear? This look is more for the indoor window shopper. Ladies, we may be in our 30’s+ but we don’t need to look frumpy. If you’re like me, you can spend up to 4-5 hours just walking around the mall. Additionally, you may also find items for yourself and not for your friends or family. Sad, isn’t it? I like this look. It’s a bit edgy but a person our age can pull it off.

That time of the season is here. The time when men have a reason to take us out for dinner. What is it about the holidays that spark romance into their manly brains. I don’t care what anyone says… but hot pink is still the look for this winter. not only does pink bring out the colour in a woman’s cheek, but it adds a pop of colour that may ask, “I wonder how old she is?” Remember now. The dress is the focal point so don’t embarrass me and get too matchy-matchy. Keep the accessories in the same tone. I like black, but you can easily do silvers, tungstens, golds, etc. Be daring. Show it off. If he’s lucky there may be more after dessert.

Last Monday 10.Deep gathered up a group of friends, took a trip out of the city, and shot their Winter 2009/10 lookbook. An interesting piece from China Daily about the Chinese fashion industry makes a change from hearing about fake and ripoffs but they do have a serious fashion industry over there.

Menswear design has always been weaker than for women, but China Fashion Week 2009 was determined to correct this. Six menswear fashion shows were held, though most were criticized as “too feminine” by Chinese media.

Fujian-based men’s fashion brand Cabbeen opened China Fashion Week to show off its T-shirts, semi-formal shorts and tight pants. Scarves were in bright colors: milk-yellow, pink, and light blue.

Designer Yang Ziming added women’s belts, large-sized handbags and tassels in the collection, for a hippie-look.

Yang said his ideas mostly originated from modern architecture.

“There are many buildings with windows in cities, so you can see pearl-like or glass-like materials in my costumes,” Yang says.

VLOV menswear, designed by Wu Qingqing, frequently used hemp material for an eco-friendly look. Colors were black, white and blue, while the deep V-shaped collars, thin belts and gloves were feminine in inspiration.

“Men usually have two faces. Sometimes they can be manly, but other times they have to be careful, detailed, and patient,” Wu explains.

ZUOAN Hong Jinshan menswear show was more masculine. Inspired by retro-futurism, designer Hong Jinshan used silver, shining blue and light brown to create a “future world”.

Most of the costumes were uniform-like. A black pilot jacket, with vintage sunglasses, was reminiscent of Tom Cruise in Top Gun. Converse-like sneakers showed up with a long jacket, for a mix-match style.

Mihuang Qi Gang designer Qi Gang showed off his cashmere creations himself. An oversized red scarf was tied under his shoulders, a black-and-white T-shirt went with a pair of tight leggings, and the ankle-high black boots were feminine-looking.

Qi’s personal show, one-day later, was wild. Animal patterns were the most obvious elements, with feathers, grassland-green skirts, and zebra-striped trousers.

Male models for luxury brand Ne Tiger’s show wore oversized fur scarves with a dark blue gown, for an ancient scholarly image. There was an all-white Western suit, but the buttons were shaped like fans. Yang Jian, secretary general of China Fashion Week Committee, said this year there would be more male fashion.

“It is because their tastes are developing and there is a market here.”

Ao Yanmin, general manager of Rich Public Relation Company, was involved in most menswear shows during fashion week.

She said there were more male brands, but disagreed with the idea they were more feminine. “It is an international trend that clothing is taking on ‘bi-gender’ characteristics. Menswear is more feminine, and women’s wear is more manly.”

Also, the ‘Kiss My…’ shemagh skirt with tie and fringe details.

As always, witty design and intricate detail are a staple for the collection and only help further prove that volatile and sly girls will forever be ‘Cult Classics.’
