A couple months ago, the associate pastor at our church announced that he would be taking three months off to go to Mexico.

Now, before you sigh with envy and work to squelch your urge to covet, Fr. Pablo isn’t off to bask in the luxury of taskless relaxation in Cabo. On the contrary, Fr. Pablo is probably working harder than he ever has, seminary studies included. You see, Fr. Pablo is currently facing his personal struggle with food by participating in a health management boot camp of sorts.

The bulletin announcement, written by Fr. Pablo himself, explained that, during a recent doctor’s visit, the M.D. was coming up with all sorts of excuses for Fr. Pablo’s health concerns. The doctor, in his attempts to be kind and “sensitive” to Fr.’s feelings, failed to address the proverbial elephant in the room, which was Fr. Pablo’s dangerous weight as the cause for his various ailments.

After reading the announcement, I was so proud of Fr. Pablo. Proud of him for confronting his demons. Proud of him for being courageous enough to share his struggles with us. Proud of him for knowing that these struggles, once overcome, would help him to better-attend to his vocation.

I also felt a bit convicted by Fr. Pablo’s forthrightness, to be honest.  You see, God has been talking to me about my health for some time now. While pregnant with and nursing my three children over the past 6 years, I had given myself permission to not monitor my food intake. “Oh, I’m eating for two,” I’d say, rationalizing the extra helping of dessert or bread or whatever. I wasn’t really thinking of the baby’s – or my own – real needs. I was thinking of my how good it felt to eat three or more scoops of ice cream or some other dessert on a regular basis.

Only, it wasn’t really feeling good anymore.  Small allowances became habits, and then cravings. I’d overeat, then hate myself for doing it, then eat to make myself feel better, only to start the cycle all over again. 

This spring, I was hospitalized several times due to complications from kidney stones. I had two procedures and missed about a month of my “regular” life. Mercifully, I was able to recognize these incidences as a gift from God – a clear sign to change  my unhealthy ways. I needed a better diet, more water, and more exercise. Sure, I tried for a while to “do better” (perhaps a week or two), but inevitably, I slipped back to old habits and probably caused God to give Himself an open-palmed slap to the forehead while rolling His eyes.

I saw Fr. Pablo’s commitment as a new opportunity for conversion. I reasoned that if Fr. Pablo could make some changes in his life, so could I. To my husband’s overwhelming delight (he’s been on my case for years), I decided to give up sugar as a sign of solidarity with and support for Fr. Pablo. No sugar means: no dessert, no sugary snacks, no soda, no sugary coffee drinks (AK!), etc.  Every time I think of sugar, desire sugar, am around or in close proximity of sugar, etc., I pray for Fr. Pablo’s success in his endeavor to win his health back. I also pray that with each small “no,” God will help me detach myself from, truly, a relationship that had become disordered.

“Great timing,” an acquaintance said, when I explained my plans. ”Do you understand you’ll be going through Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas? That means no Halloween candy, no pumpkin or apple pie, no candy canes or sugar cookies or fudge?” She looked at me like I was crazy. She laughed as she added, “Let me remember you the way you were,” implying that there was no way I’d be happy without chocolate.

Well, it’s been 36 days so far. Halloween, with its bowls of Reese’s peanut butter cups and Tootsie rolls has come and gone, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I wish I could say that saying “no” to sugar has become easier. I wish I could also say that I have lost 20 pounds. I CAN say, though, that I think I have more energy now to chase my kids around. And I think my complexion might have improved. More importantly, I know that with God’s help and by His grace, I can use my small sacrifices to help another. And I CAN overcome anything through Christ who strengthens me – even sugar.

Nothing original, and nothing we haven’t seen before in the “Fast and the Furious” series.

Review:

The film brings back the two main stars of the first film, Paul Walker (marginal actor) and Vin Diesel (bald marginal actor).  The two actors then run around flip-flopping between good and bad, racing cars, getting in fights, and yelling cliche one-liners.  In all actuality, there is nothing original about this movie.  It’s as if writers were told you could only use bits and pieces from the previous three films.  Teams of drivers using modded street racing cars who normally hijack goods on the highway (“The Fast & the Furious”), must prove their driving skills to a drug dealer for the right to help transport illegal goods (“2 Fast 2 Furious”), which culminates in a final showdown of driving wits (“The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”).

Quick question: how come criminals in this series continue to rely on extremely rare, bright, flashy, easy to spot cars for pulling off crimes?  This is Similar to why no one seemed to catch on that Tom Selleck drove around in a Ferrari on Magnum PI.  Cool?  Yes.  Practical?  Not at all.

Anyways, there were two slight moments of originality in the movie though.  The first came during a scene where they were attempting to cross the US-Mexican border, coordinated against the security of satellites, camera sweeps and border patrols.  However, once they entered the secret tunnel this scene was killed by extremely cheesy CGI.  It immediately reminded me of those lame 3D ride you see at malls, where all it does is tilt you back and forth, and the video is crappy computer graphics as you travel through a giant cave on a mine cart.  Later in the movie they reuse this scene, so in fact not only does the director steal from all the previous movies, he also steals scenes directly from the same movie.  The second slightly original sequence is towards the end, when they attempt to break Toretto (Vin Diesel) out of the prison bus.  This too is cut short as they immediately cut to the credits as soon as they catch up to the bus.

It would appear there isn’t much juice left in the Fast/Furious franchise.  However, the films continue to make money, this film being the most successful overall at the box office so far.  I honestly enjoyed the first movie, and would like to see the series survive.  To do this however, they’re going to have to bring in some new writer/director who has never seen the series before.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline fueld car racing flick, go check out Ronin or Bullitt instead.

January 26, 2009 – Doesn’t like it – Seriously. I know I”ve said these words before about McDonald’s… I get that it’s only fast food, it’s cheap, and that I shouldn’t expect much… but holy cow, is this consistently one of the slowest “fast food” restaurants that I’ve ever been to. Of course, like an idiot, I keep going back hoping that it might someday be an actual convenience. Let me share with you my latest adventure…

Sunday morning, my wife & I were on our way out to my Mom’s house in the ‘Burbs… so we thought we’d get a quick bite to eat. It was nearing the 11:00am mark, so I knew we were going to hit the breakfast/lunch changeover. We skipped the McDormontonald’s because the drive-thru line looked like rush hour in the Liberty tubes. Thankfully, Wendy’s appeared to be a ghost town. There was hardly anyone inside, and there was one car ahead of us in the drive-thru but they were all the way up at the window.

As we pulled up to the speaker to place our order, I asked if they were serving breakfast or lunch, & was informed that they were serving both. So, I ordered the breakfast chicken sandwich combo, and the wife ordered the #2 bacon panini combo.

After receiving the order in what would be considered a long wait in a normal fast food environment but translated to remarkably quick at this location, I pulled into a nearby spot to inspect the goods. (Sadly, a must any more.)We discovered that my order was fine, but the wife had received a sausage panini instead of the ordered bacon panini. I checked the receipt to see if I had mis-ordered the # of the combo. Nope. The receipt clearly stated BACON in that nifty dot-matrix receipt font.

My wife’s not a big fan of sausage patties, and she was reluctantly leaning toward just eating it because time was of the essence. I know I like to eat what I ordered & paid for, so I went inside to get what I thought would be a simple swap-out.

Oh my, was I wrong.

My first encounter was with the young girl at the cash register. I politely stated that we had just gone through the drive-thru and that I wanted to exchange the sausage panini that we had received for the bacon one that we ordered.

I was told that breakfast was over & that hey couldn’t make a bacon one. After a slight pause of disbelief and bewilderment, I told her that I had just been handed the sandwich less that a minute ago through the drive-thru window… and it had been made just seconds before that.

She then yelled for her manager, and I stepped aside so she could help the next customer.

Now, while never working at a fast food establishment, I do understand that changeover time is changeover time… something to do with eggs on the cooking surface and kitchen setup and all sorts of things that are surely beyond my comprehension as the average fast food consumer.

After a wait the manager (coincidentally the very same person who handed me the order through the drive-thru window) came over and I again explained my situation… and he looked at me. Yes. Just stared blankly at me. For an awkwardly long time. I actually started to wonder if he understood English & was capable of hearing. Compelled to break the silence, I even showed him the receipt that clearly said BACON. All caps. No confusion!

Again, I was met with “we’re serving lunch now, we can’t make that”. OK. I understand. I get that. The point now is what can you do for me?

I asked if I could get something else as compensation, and/or get my money back. (I think I was growing visibly frustrated by this point.)

I called the wife, explained to her the complexity of the situation, and she decided upon a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger. So, I asked for one of those… and waited… and waited… While a guy who had gone in line in front of me had ordered during my exchange with the manager was waiting too.

After a while he exclaimed with multiple expletives that it was a ridiculously long wait, and how it was un-f’n-believable that a fast food restaurant with 3 people in it and a packed kitchen could go so slow.

I could hardly contain my laughter as I was also driven to the limits of my patience.

After what was surely sufficient time to cook & assemble 20 Jr. Bacon cheeseburgers, I received that, AND my money back for the sausage panini (which was now in the trash right behind the counter). So, I guess I got a free cheeseburger, hash browns & a drink.

I never did get any kind of apology, or admittance that they had messed up the order. (Which bewilders me that one can read bacon off of a screen and put down sausage… but I’m certainly not above making mistakes… so I can’t fault anyone for that.)

I just find it amazing that they weren’t apologizing from the start and presenting a solution instead of waiting for me to come up with one.

You’d think they’d have a “keep the customer happy” policy in place. Don’t they teach you any of this when you go to school to be a manager at Wendy’s?Take mom n’ pop shops… if they screw up an order or take too long, they’d give you a discount or a free drink or a coupon for next time… and they’re certainly taking more of a profit hit than a chain that would do the same thing.

At any rate, don’t go to Wendy’s in Dormont if you’re in a hurry, or if you actually want what you ordered.

I like Wendy’s. I grew up eating at the one in Murrysville, I frequent the one in Canonsburg for lunch. You have decent food for a cheap price, and I generally feel that the quality is better than that of other fast food chains.

I’d love to be able to eat peacefully and grab a quick bite to eat at the Wendy’s closest to where I live.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my experience, and I look forward to your reply.

I texted West Coast while high last night. I know I said I’d never smoke weed again, but oh well. I was in a really good place last night.

He looked great for the dinner but I didn’t see him at the dance. So I told him he looked good and that I was too high to worry. He didn’t respond, but there’s nothing I can do.

Tomorrow is the boyfriend’s birthday. He managed to get some weed from a friend so I have to think of something else to buy him. He’s turning into kind of a big stoner, which isn’t good because his grades are suffering anyway… but that’s not for me to worry about, it’s his cross to bear.

My grades are what I need to worry about. I spoke with the advisor for students with disabilities on Friday, and he told me he could help me with classes that I don’t have the energy to wake up for. Sometimes I feel so weak that I can’t get out of bed, and he said that it counts as a disability. So what that means is I’ll get to live in a single next year at no extra cost and that my professors will all be notified that I have some debilitating illness that prevents me from having perfect attendance.

My attendance is near perfect, but I don’t want to drop from being an A student to a B+ student just because of depression and anorexia.

I weighed in, and my BMI is 18.4. I’m underweight, but barely. I mentioned last time that I’m doing the “Skinny Bitch Challenge” and that I’m liquid-fasting right now, so I’m hoping to see that number go down soon.

I set a goal at 95. That’s when I’ll be able to smile again. Not so thin that I black out while walking, and not fat enough to invalidate any fleeting moments of joy I might experience.

I’m feeling really tired, but I’m going to go into town to get a gift for the boyfriend later. I’ll need more coffee first I think.

So I went on a bit of a fruit fast this week.  I wanted to try it because some friends that worked at the farmer’s market gave me a great deal on fruit.  It’s also super healthy for you and evidently, the fruit fast gives your digestive system a break – because fruit is so easy to break down.

Well, I did fruit for breakfast and lunch – as much as possible.  Then for dinner I ate meals that weren’t processed and super healthy.  It was a great week.

I didn’t do it to lose weight, but I did do it for health.  When you stop eating all that processed stuff and you just healthy stuff – your body tells you right away that it appreciates it.  You can just feel all of that unhealthy stuff leave your body and you start to feel great.

What I also realized as I was conscious about my eating this week is that I really don’t eat too many bad things.  Most things that I eat are fresh and pretty healthy.

The only time that I do not eat healthy is when I’m in a rush.  When I haven’t planned well and I fall behind, the first thing that I throw out the window is what I eat.  The trip to McDonalds is quite convenient.   It’s a great lesson for me to think that when I rush, I eat junk.  I’m not judging anyone that eats junk – you’re responsible for you, but I will change my habits for health.

For me – rushing leads to bad eating.  I need to be conscious of what I eat.

How many times have you managed to swat a fly with your hands? Difficult is not it? The secret behind this ability is now known explanation.

That is, the fly has been well integrated with the visual information from the eyes and metasensorik information on his feet. These findings provide clues to the nervous system of flies and shows that the brain is a system of mapping the position of the threat.

“This is a transformation of stimulus into the slightly complex movement and subsequent research to find parts of the brain that govern them,” he said.

Of the system, Dickinson also can suggest the most effective way to hit a fly. According to him, the best time to hit a fly rather than when its position ready to fly, so the time needed to anticipate the threat is relatively much longer. Of course not easy to make accurate movements of less than 100 milliseconds.

I recently visited BSNL Customer Care Centre to enquire availability of  3G or EVDO network in Haldwani. EVDO on the other hand is available only in certain parts on Haldwani, it covers only Nainital Road plus few more places. EVDO only has one advantage over 3G, the tariff. Rs 550 and you get unlimited download on EVDO where as in 3G UL plan is worth Rs 3000. Lots going on right now…
