New York City Council Deputy Majority Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) hosted a ceremony yesterday to officially rename the corner of Hollis Avenue and 205th Street as “Run DMC JMJ Way” in honor of the legendary Hall of Fame rap group that began their career in this community. With hundreds of Southeast Queens’ residents in attendance, Rev. Run and DMC joined with family members of the late group member Jam Master Jay to officially unveil the new street sign and become the first hip hop artists to be honored with a New York City street naming.

The ceremony was co-hosted by Power 105 radio personality (and Hollis native) Ed Lover and WBLS radio personality Dr. Bob Lee. Also in attendance were New York State Senate President Malcolm Smith (D-Queens), hip hop legends Rahiem (of Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five) and Kangol Kid (UTFO). The invocation was delivered by Rev. Carleen Thorbes of New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

The historic day began with a short parade from the Hollis Hip Hop Museum, located in the Hollis Famous Burger restaurant. Led by the Elite Marching Band, Jam Master Jay’s mother Connie Mizell and Council Member Comrie led family members to the ceremony site where they were joined on stage by Rev. Run and DMC. With their numerous hits being played, both surviving group members joined Ms. Mizell in remembering their fallen deejay and delivering positive messages to the audience.

“What this sign says to me is that you can be anything you want,” stated DMC. “Because of hip hop, I became one of the greatest lyricists of all time. And I did it without using profanity or disrespecting our beautiful Black women. Hip hop is about us doing the best with what we have to make it better for all the people after us. We are who we are because of you people.”

“This is a proud day for my whole family,” Ms. Mizell told the crowd. “I want to thank Council Member Comrie and the entire community for honoring my son and the entire group in this manner. I can remember like it was yesterday that the three of them were practicing their music in my living room in our house just a few blocks from here. And now future generations will see this street and be inspired by what they accomplished.”

Added Rev. Run, “This thing is bigger than me and D. This thing is about God giving us an opportunity to express ourselves through hip hop.”

Run D.M.C. was an influential Hip-Hop group whose members were born and/or grew up in Hollis, Queens. Founded by Joseph “DJ Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C” McDaniels, and the late Jason “Jam Master J” Mizell, Run D.M.C. is considered to be one of the most important and influential artists in rap music history. Seven ground-breaking albums and countless hit singles resulted in the group paving the way for rap music to become the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. Additionally, Run D.M.C. is given credit for immortalizing Hollis, Queens as one of the birth places of Hip-Hop.

Run D.M.C was inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 4, 2009 in honor of their historic and successful twenty-five year career.

Run (born Joseph Simmons, November 14, 1964) was the brother of Russell Simmons, who formed the hip-hop management company Rush Productions in the early ’80s; by the mid-’80s, Russell had formed the pioneering record label Def Jam with Rick Rubin. Russell encouraged his brother Joey and his friend Darryl McDaniels (born May 31, 1964) to form a rap duo. The pair of friends did just that, adopting the names Run and D.M.C., respectively. After they graduated from high school in 1982, the pair enlisted their friend Jason Mizell (born January 21, 1965) to scratch turntables; Mizell adopted the stage name Jam Master Jay.

In 1983, Run-D.M.C. released their first single, “It’s Like That/Sucker M.C.’s,” on Profile Records. It was the first “new school” hip-hop recording. “It’s Like That” became a Top 20 R&B hit, as did the group’s second single, “Hard Times/Jam Master Jay.” Two other hit R&B singles followed in early 1984 – “Rock Box” and “30 Days”. By the time of their second album, 1985’s King of Rock, Run-D.M.C. had become the most popular and influential rappers in America. Besides releasing the King of Rock album and scoring the R&B hits “King of Rock”, “You Talk Too Much”, and “Can You Rock It Like This” in 1985, the group also appeared in the rap movie Krush Groove, which also featured Kurtis Blow, the Beastie Boys and the Fat Boys.

Run-D.M.C.’s fusion of rock and rap broke into the mainstream with their third album, 1986’s “Raising Hell“. The album was preceded by the Top Ten R&B single “My Adidas”, which set the stage for the group’s biggest hit single, a cover of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way”. Recorded with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, “Walk This Way” was the first hip-hop record to appeal to both rockers and rappers, as evidenced by its peak position of number four on the pop charts.

Historically, the group achieved a number of notable firsts in hip hop music and credited with being the act most responsible for pushing hip hop into mainstream popular music, initiating its musical and artistic evolution and enabling its growth as a global phenomenon. Run-D.M.C. is the first rap act to have reached a number of major accomplishments:

* A #1 R&B charting rap album

* The first major rap act to appear on American Bandstand (the Sugar Hill Gang appeared on the program in 1981)

* The first rap act to chart in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 more than once

* The first rap artist with a top 10 pop charting rap album

* The first rap artist with RIAA-certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums

* The first rap act to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine

* The first rap act to receive a Grammy Award nomination

* The first rap act to make a video appearance on MTV

* Signed to an athletic product endorsement deal (Adidas)

The hip-hop movie. If you ain’t seen it (why?), go and buy it or something.

Anyways, the OST is worth a mention in its own right, as it featured – and spawned – some of the hottest tracks of the day, and was a genre hopping rap/rock/pop/RnB fest that charted pretty high.

The soundtrack is now sadly long out-of-print, though LPs and cassettes can be gotten more easily than CDs – for only a limited number of CDs were ever pressed.

1. Chaka Khan—”(Krush Groove) Can’t Stop The Street” (5:10)
2. LL Cool J—”I Can’t Live Without My Radio” (short version) (4:25)
Some of my favorites include listening to Billy Joel records with my dad, blasting “Wipeout” by the Fat Boys at the Perrysburg pool on my ghetto blaster, rapping with my first band, The Young Rhymers, playing percussion in Mitch and Jay’s basement (which would eventually turn into Jaywalking), rocking with Buddy Tim in the garage and the loft (which eventually turned into Goat Cave), and finally starting a band with 3 of my best friends from Perrysburg in what you all know as The Top Heavies.

Bumper and I used to sit on his porch and dream of the day that we would be able to get together and start our own band. In fact, before any of us had any instruments, we would beat box beats and bass lines while others would rap and harmonize. It was the beginning of something good that took a long time to culminate into something “real”. However, through many trials and tribulations, Bumper, Ben, Tom, and I all ended up in Columbus and the time was right to finally get the project that we had always dreamed off the ground. So, with the generosity of the Hannigans, and the annoyance of my neighbors, we started The Top Heavies. We have come a long way from the electronic drum sets, Barringer amps, and cheap grey PA systems. We have released our first album, Feed the Beast, thanks to the generosity of Brad Foster and countless others. It is because of them and our hard work that we have been able to see our dreams become a reality. Making an album has always been a life long dream of mine and the rest of the band. There is something to be said for starting from nothing and eventually putting out a product that is, in our eyes, a very good record and something that we are all very proud of. The idea of pursuing dreams and goals is the reason I am writing to you all today.

The band and I have decided to dissolve my role as the drummer of The Top Heavies. The path that brought me to become a drummer with my best friends is now taking me somewhere different. Another life long goal of mine is to finish school and go on to get my MBA. I am doing this while working my full time job and trying to have some sort of social life. Unfortunately, there is just not enough time anymore for me to fit all of this in. It is disheartening to know that I am moving away from this part of my life for now but it is a necessary step for all of us to be able to move on and achieve the goals and dreams we have all set for ourselves.

You have been the most supportive and gracious friends, fans, and family anyone could ever ask for. I appreciate all the kind words and encouragement over the years and I’m sure you will have plenty more kind words for whoever decides to step in and fill my role.

Much love to all –

Jeff Carr

Sorry I haven’t posted in so long. Things around here have been rather busy. (but aren’t they everywhere, Cookie Lady? Yeah, yeah… I hear ya!)

Okay, now for the last segment of the report of my weekend in Kissimmee, Florida.

FOOD!!!

And GOOD food at that! Oh, my word!

Faye took me to some of the BEST places to eat. And my report of the weekend wouldn’t be complete, if I didn’t share with you all information on these fine eateries.

Friday night’s dinner was at The Catfish Place in St. Cloud near Kissimmee. Now, if you don’t like fish, this might not be your place. I love fish, though catfish has never been my first choice. When I told Faye this, she laughed and said, “Well, more than likely all you’ve ever had is farm-raised catfish. This catfish is not like that at all.” Intrigued by her comment, I gave her a puzzled look, to which she smiled and responded, “catfish just tastes better with a little dirt in it.”

Okaaaaayyyyy… dirt. Hmmmm… I was further intrigued!

I ordered the “all-you-can-eat” platter, just like everyone else, and very quickly found out that… one platter was all I could eat! But oh, the food was amazing! I have NEVER had catfish that good! As far as I’m concerned? Bring on the dirt, ha ha!

Flounder? Tuna? Move over. I think I’ve found a new flavor in seafood. :O)

But it has to be there, at The Catfish Place, in St. Cloud near Kissimmee. So check it out for yourself! (YES, I would make a trip just to eat there!)

Okay, Saturday morning was breakfast at Cracker Barrel, as I mentioned in “An Element of Grace.” Since I’m sure that everyone knows what the food is like there, I won’t repeat myself.

So on to lunch. Once again, Faye knew of a local eatery that she wanted me to try, a barbecue place called “Fat Boys.” I like barbecue, I do, but I just don’t eat it very much. I told Faye going in to the restaurant that I knew of another barbecue place that was very famous and had been written up in nationally syndicated magazines, for its exceptional cuisine.

Heh. All I can say is, the “other” place just lost its ranking, in my book.

I had a friend once that had this to say when something was exceptionally good to eat: “The food’s so good, don’t get any of it on your forehead, because you’ll knock yourself out, trying to lick it off with your tongue!” Rather goofy, I know, but it gets the point across.

GOOD barbecue! Oh, my word! It just doesn’t get any better than this! Fat Boys rules! Not only was the barbecue top notch, but the service was impeccable. Our server was more than gracious, kind and helpful. She treated us like we were long-standing citizens of the town, like we belonged there. I was impressed.

Want the best barbecue on the planet? Better get down to Kissimmee then, because you won’t find it anywhere else. Fat Boys! The best barbecue with all the trimmings. It made a “believer” out of me!

And the other thing that I enjoyed about these two places is that they were tastefully decorated with lots of memorabilia from the area. Photos of people, notices of events, newspaper articles, awards… all things that speak of local pride.

Now, the “Pièce de résistance,“ as the French say…

Joe’s Crab Shack.

OH… my… WORD!

First of all, I know it’s a chain, but I’ve never been to a “Joe’s” before. I had heard about it, and had seen pictures of this one, from times when Rich and his family or other people had eaten there, and posted pictures on Facebook. I knew it to be a wonderful place for family fun. I knew it had great food.

But I had never experienced eating at Joe’s. And like so many other things, there is a difference between knowing about something, and experiencing it for yourself.

It was, for me, the crown jewel of eateries in the entire area. To watch the servers dance, to be treated so wonderfully, to be served such fantastic seafood…

It was the best, the absolute best. As my T-shirt from the Shack says, “One shell of a good time”! So find your way to Joe’s Crab Shack, at 10 Blake Blvd. in Celebration, Florida, (once again, near Kissimmee) and…

Eat Up, Me Hearties!

Eminem has really fallen off hard, if you ask me. All of his new songs sound like a pathetic attemp

Eminem has really fallen off hard, if you ask me. All of his new songs sound like a pathetic attempt to reconnect to his old material with a new wacky voice. His new single 3A.M. is straight up old school Detroit horrorcore. While Em has dabbled in this sound before, he’s usually been pretty tongue-in-cheek or at least grounded in a little bit of reality, but not now. Em is all in this time around. Which is a brave move because nobody but Esham likes horrorcore. His biggest sin on 3A.M. is that it’s just not scary or cool and most importantly it lacks the hotness of a Nightmare on Elm St. theme song. (Which I believe is the pinnacle of horror based music)

You’ve seen 3A.M. now watch how real pros do it. The Fat Boys’ song “Are You Ready For Freddy?” didn’t just put a beat to an age old philosophical debate. It also showed us the real reason for Freddy Krueger horrible burn scars. It wasn’t from being shoved into a furnace like originally suspected, it was because Freddy Krueger spits rhymes that are hot like fire!!!

And if that wasn’t enough to prove a point, get ready to see the video for the song that launched all horror based music. (and no it’s not Thriller, sorry Michael) It’s Dokken’s “Dream Warriors”. To this day it’s realest shit I’ve ever seen.

GAME. SET. MATCH. Freddy WINS!!!

Winslow needs money now to pay off gambling debts. If only his rich uncle Albert would die. But his orderlies are very good.
Pacific Division – Shut Up. Download HERE.

These three guys are some of the best dressed artists in the game right now … and it’s time you try them on for size.

Meet Pacific Division. A trio consisting of two brothers, Like and Mibbs, and their friend BeYoung. They call Palmdale, CA (just north of LA) home and they’re quickly building up an undeniable buzz.

Don’t expect your everyday west coast gangsta rap from Pac Div.

These three grew up with normal jobs and don’t necessarily think glocks and bricks are the end all be all. They have a new definition for “cool.”

People like to label us as “backpack”, because anything that is not gangsta out here is thought of as backpack [rap]. We really don’t like that label. We are just here doing music that’s us. We call it life-music because it’s music to live to.

After graduating high school back in ‘01, Pacific Division dropped everything to pursue a career in hip hop.

Luckily, it paid off as the group found itself receiving nods of approval from the likes of Pharrell and ?uestlove, and even pulled off a shout out from Snoop on one of his tracks.

Pac Div’s initial success and recognition can be attributed to The Blend Tape (download HERE), their first mixtape filled with witty tracks about day jobs and chasing girls (on a budget).

What’s to be said about this pioneering hip hop act other than to say that these are the guys that made hip hop fun for me and millions of others. First known as the Disco Three, the Fat Boys have had a following all over the world. Consisting of Prince Markie Dee, Kool Rock Ski and the late Buff the Human Beat Box, the Fat Boys were one of the first major Rap acts to crossover into the Pop world. Now after nearly 20 years apart, the surviving members have come back together again. With a European tour set for next Summer and hopefully a full album on the way, SaveOurHipHop, recently caught up with the fellas to see where they are at, how they got there, and where they are going. One thing is for sure, like the song says, “The Fat Boys are Back!”

Thank you for the oppurtunity. I have been a fan since way back and i am really glad that you guys have come back together to put out new music. And i am especially glad that you have taken the time to answer a few questions for me.

SaveOurHipHop: What have ya’ll been up to since the last Fat Boys album?
Markie: I been doing the producing thing. Worked with Mary J Blige, J-Lo, Mariah Carey, etc. Working with Uncle Louie on alotta projects man. And of course my radio show on 103.5 The Beat in Miami.
Kool Rock: I’ve been focused on fitness and staying healthy.

SaveOurHipHop: Who first inspired you to rap?
Markie: man, growing up in Brooklyn, me Buff and Rock just did it as kids. We were like 15 or 16 when we started as the Disco 3. Football and Rapping were my childhoods loves.
Kool Rock: I wanted to get girls and chicks was into dudes who could spit. Plus, we wanted to rock the crowds and chill in the clubs like Fever!
Markie: we did it cause it was fun.
Kool: it was never a business for us. We loved it, loved rocking the house!

SaveOurHipHop: The United Remix has been playin in my head since i first heard it, it really is a nice song and i think it shows you guys can really bring it. But with all the talk of hip hop being dead, my question is how do you feel about the current state of hip hop, and how do you see your place in it.
Kool: Uncle Louie wrote that song and J-Love laced the track for a project we were doing with Philly MC Elijah. Unite for Change.
Markie: thanks for the spins man. Blessed. if hip-hop was government we’d be on the $1 bill cause like George Washington helped found the USA we helped found Hip-Hop. It’s been a labor of love. We love where hip-hop went and where it will go.
Kool: we pioneers man and I hate when people say hip-hop is dead.
Markie: chill rock, chill. Rock needs to go to some sit-ups lol
Kool: you need to do situps man! I mean, ya it’s evolved but it’s alive and well. Jay-Z, Diddy, Kanye, TI, the list goes on.
Markie: I’m glad you liked the track. My dude J-Love layed down a tight ballad. Emotional jive!

SaveOurHipHop: Was there any hesitation about recording again with out Buffie (RIP)?
Kool: we had hesitation but, we spoke to Quinton (Buffs son) and Curt (Buffs bro) and they encouraged us.

Markie: buff ain’t here but he is still with us and he inspired us to bring this back.

SaveOurHipHop: What was it like the first time you guys got back into the studio together?
Markie: it was fun, we laughed and enjoyed ourselves.
Kool: it was like we never left.

SaveOurHipHop: I’m sure you guys are very aware of VH1’s annual hip hop honors program. Do you feel you guys are little overdue getting inducted?
Kool: we’d be honored to get that recognition.
Markie: blessed to be even considered.

SaveOurHipHop: Anyone who sees you now cant help but to notice that the Fat Boy term doesn’t really fit you guys any more. Was the weight loss something that was brought upon after the passing of Buff, or was it something you were already working towards prior to his death?
Kool: of course losing Buff was a wake up call.
Markie: staying healthy is easier that getting healthy.

SaveOurHipHop: Can we expect a full album or tour from you guys in the future?
Kool: We are touring Europe this summer and looking to do something in the states soon.

SaveOurHipHop: Will you be coming to Alabama any time in the future?
Markie: if Uncle Louie books a show we there. Me and Rock love Alabama.
Kool: sweet home…LOL

SaveOurHipHop: Any last words from you guys to fans?
Markie: please check www.OriginalFatBoys.com
Kool: hit me and Mark up on the message boards!

SaveOurHipHop: Again, thank you for the oppurtunity to be able to ask these questions and i hope to hear from you guys soon.

One Love

Dette programmet ble sendt 15. oktober 2008

Nok et old school-program, men denne gang nesten new-school.

Kos y’all!

Spilleliste:

The Message – Grandmaster Fash

Freaks Come Out at Night – Whodini

All You Can Eat – Fat Boys

Fly Girl – The Boogie Boys

I Know You Got Soul – Eric B & Rakim

Strictly Business – Erick and Parrish Making Dollars

Children’s Story – Slick Rick

Brand Nubian – Brand Nubian

Funky for You – Nice and Smooth

Rock This Funky Joint – Pour Righteous Teachers

The Fat Boys burst onto the eighties music scene and have since dwindled down into part of a Hip-Hop history lesson. Now more than 20 years since their debut, one of the original members is having his name thrust back into the spotlight. Prince Markie Dee of the Original Fat Boys is preparing to try his luck in the wrestling ring. The Fat Boy is taking retired WWF Wrestler, Iron Shiek to the ring following comments he made on the Howard Stern show.

According to the old school veteran, he witnessed Shiek call a staff member on Howard Stern’s radio show a “little nigger.” Feeling offended, Dee challenged the retired wrestler to step up and meet him in the ring. Via Twitter, UFC/MMA Legendary fighter, Frank Trigg has offered to train the Fat Boy for the fight. When this fight goes down, Prince Markie Dee will donate the money raised to charity.

The fight between the original Fat Boy and The Iron Sheik will be a pay per view event. For more information visit www.OriginalFatBoys.com/fight

The Fat Boys will also continue their charitable endeavors with an upcoming benefit in May of next year. They’ll hit the stage at Fat Boys Fest to support Markie Dee’s “Labor of Love” charity. The group also supports several other charitable organizations including “LetsGetThis.org”, “First Book” and ”Susan G. Komen for the Cure.”
