When Custom Goes Wrong: Fat Horse

Well, I shouldn’t say “wrong,” maybe “not right” would be more accurate. I mean, you can tell what it’s supposed to be, it just looks ridiculous. You see, a friend of mine asked me to make a horse to be given to a group of men speaking at a conference at which she’s volunteering. This is a serious conference and these are serious speakers. They need a serious horse. What I came up with is not a serious horse (in my defense, look at my portfolio, serious is not my forte.) Let me introduce you to my creation, Fat Horse:

Oh, Fat Horse. The head was turning out so well, but then the body got so fat. I could probably even him out a bit by making the head bigger, but the body will never look like the lean, graceful creature that I based it on. If I make the body thinner, he won’t really stand up. While I normally keep working at something until I get it right, I know that this will never look good enough to be given to a serious scientist so I’ve aborted this custom mission.

Fat Horse is not a loss though. He makes me laugh with his long, luxurious, Fabio-esque hair and his chubby body and legs. I think what could take Fat Horse to the next level is making Fat Unicorn. I need to find some sparkly yarn and the next fat equine I make will be the finest, most comical crocheted horse ever.

My natural hoof care gal was here to trim on Friday morning. She took one look at Cinnamon and almo

My natural hoof care gal was here to trim on Friday morning. She took one look at Cinnamon and almost had a heart attack over her weight. Cinnamon, the starving horse with protruding hip bones and visible ribs we bought in December, has ballooned into a morbidly obese little mare. She was pleasantly plump before she started on the all-you-can-eat pasture buffet. Now she’s just fat.

The problem with a fat horse is that hoof problems are bound to follow. The wonderful progress we had made with Cinnamon’s hooves has been reversed. All her solar concavity is gone. She’s actually a bit sore and doesn’t want to move forward. My hoof care gal said that Cinnamon is on the fast-track to a major laminitic event…a.k.a founder. Yikes.

So Cinnamon has been sentenced to Fat Camp. She’ll spend her summer in the barn yard. No grass. No pasture. A sad little pony on a dry lot. But it’s for her own good.

The down side is that I have to feed hay through the summer now. Luckily, I don’t have to buy hay or I’d be selling a horse. It also means that our family vacation gets a little more complicated, because suddenly there are daily horse chores again, including hauling water for the horses on pasture who can’t get into the barn, because Cinnamon gets the barn along with the barn yard.

In the spirit of limiting everyone’s diet, we spent yesterday fencing in the pasture. We decided that two acres was plenty for the remaining two critters who are allowed pasture-access. No more five-acre paradise. The good thing is that the two acres nearest the barn are the two safest acres – no junk-filled ravine, no granary with loose tin, no calf creep feeder that might be broken into. There’s a huge tree for shade and the back of the garage does nicely as a wind break, though I may be lobbying pretty hard for a run-in shelter.

Sometimes I think having kids is easier than having horses. I know kids’ shoes are cheaper! I dropped a pretty penny on Cinnamon’s Easy Boots (yes, another horse in Easy Boots) on Friday, but she needs them to be comfortable during rides at the moment.

One last thing in this long ramble….I think Blue has a hoof abscess brewing. But that’s a story for another day…
