As reported online today, some families in the East Riding of Yorkshire are still not back in their homes following the 2007 floods that devastated parts of the UK. Each family is facing being unable to celebrate a third Christmas in their own homes. Twenty-Five households in Hull and forty-four in the East Riding are affected. Some delays have been caused by problems with insurers. The June floods made thousands homeless across the region, and caused one fatality. Cumbria is currently struggling to recover following the recent floods which claimed the life of hero Pc Bill Barker.  Thanks for reading.

No início dos anos 90, os jogos de luta eram o carro chefe do mercado. Quando Street Fighter II: The World Warrior chegou aos arcades em 1991 e aos consoles domésticos um ano depois com um sucesso estrondoso, as produtoras concentraram os esforços nos títulos de pancadaria. Entre experiências boas e ruins, foram criados jogos que não caíram nas graças dos jogadores e outros que marcaram época.

Pela qualidade ou pelo apelo à violência, Mortal Kombat marcou o início dos jogos sanguinários como o principal concorrente de Street Fighter II. Lançado pela Acclaim em 1993, o título deu início a uma série que ganha jogos até hoje, embora menos aclamados que nas gerações anteriores, e se tornou um ícone na cultura pop dos videogames – virou filme, desenho animado, inspirou músicas e até foi “clonado” por outros estúdios, assim como o jogo da Capcom.

O estilo introduzido por Mortal Kombat era bem diferente do até então visto nos outros jogos do gênero. A maior diferença eram os gráficos – os personagens eram atores filmados, cuja imagem foi digitalizada e transformada em animação por quadros, o mesmo recurso usado para a programação dos movimentos de Prince of Persia. Os cenários e os próprios personagens fugiam do estilo “desenho animado”, fazendo com que, na época, os gráficos fossem os mais próximos do real possível, dando a sensação das três dimensões.

Com uma história cheia de clichês como pano de fundo – um torneio de “combates mortais” entre o mundo dos humanos e um mundo sobrenatural chamado Outworld – Mortal Kombat tinha sete personagens jogáveis: Rayden, Kano, Sonya (a única mulher do primeiro jogo), Johnny Cage, Liu Kang e os ninjas Subzero e Scorpion, estes que dariam início à produção em série de ninjas utilizados na série. Cada qual com seu motivo, o objetivo desses lutadores era simplesmente derrotar os outros, depois vencer Goro e Shang Tsung, os dois chefes do jogo, e se tornar o grande campeão, diferente de toda aquela história contada no filme que o SBT insiste em reprisar.

Mas o que fez de Mortal Kombat um sucesso não foram as atuações de Christopher Lambert como o deus do trovão e sim a violência, os ossos e o sangue. Afinal, nenhum jogo até então mostrava sangue jorrando toda vez que um gancho era desferido no adversário. Pelo menos não com o “realismo” de Mortal Kombat. E se a violência é o grande atrativo do jogo, o maior crédito por isso vai com louvor para os fatalities, as finalizações especiais que são praticamente o DNA da série. Cabeças e corações arrancados, corpos incendiados e eletrocutados, era disso que o povo gostava e era isso que podia fazer depois de espancar o inimigo e ver um grande “Finish him!” aparecer na tela. Após a execução do comando, então, a animação era ativada e a eliminação sádica do oponente fazia a alegria das massas.

Um ano antes de chegar ao Mega Drive, Mortal Kombat já ganhava espaço nos arcades, e ao mesmo tempo em que foi lançado para o console da Sega, também foi para o Super NES. A diferença é que no Mega Drive foram mantidos os gráficos de sangue, enquanto na plataforma da Nintendo o que  espirrava dos personagens era suor e alguns fatalities, como o de Subzero, foram alterados. O jogo, aliás, foi um dos principais responsáveis pela criação da ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) em 1994, um órgão de classificação etária e censura de jogos casos estes contenham cenas e elementos impróprios para certas idades.

A série continua ainda hoje e, claro, ganhou grandes inovações, novos personagens e toda uma história mais bem elaborada. São cerca de dez títulos – alguns dos quais nem de luta são - distribuídos por mais de 20 consoles. Um título respeitável, criador de parâmetros gráficos e de jogabilidade e merecedor de um lugar entre os mais lembrados.

Mortal Kombat is no stranger to controversy surrounding its gory content but let’s face it, the original game came out in a time where the original Doom was considered to be the most terrifying and graphic experience known to man. Makes you wonder what would happen if you could take a copy of Gears of War 2 back in time somehow and show the censors just how graphic games would become. They’d most likely shit themselves.

But did you ever wonder how far the Mortal Kombat development team pushed the boundaries of bad taste? What sickening, mind bending ideas were deemed too gruesome that they couldn’t make the final release? Besides the fact that it will be costly to do so, it is also just too easy for a person who has been sued and who has no insurance to avoid paying any judgment by hiding their money, declaring bankruptcy or moving to a state like Texas or Florida where a home can be homesteaded and thereby protect a large amount of money.

But assuming that the person who caused the death of your family member was insured, think about whether your loved one would have wanted you to be taken care of and happy in coming years. While a wrongful death claim sometimes can’t be settled without litigation, when that litigation is over, there is usually some closure and a great relief that may not be there if you just continue to think about how unfair your loved one’s death was.

Never let any friends or neighbors push you into something you’re not ready for. Let your friends know that you are still grieving and that you will do or not do what you feel is right when you are ready to face that hurdle. If they are truly your friends, they should know that they need to give you some space and time to grasp and deal with the loss you are faced with.

In California, you have a two year statute of limitations to file a wrongful death lawsuit. But you have only six months to file a claim if a public entity is involved and delay in speaking with an attorney can make it difficult to obtain evidence such as vehicle skid marks after it rains.

As much as I think Mortal Kombat was/is a pretty shitty fighting game, it deserves our attention.  For those of us in the Capcom or SNK school of fighting games Mortal Kombat always seemed pretty stripped down.  Every character had identical regular moves and were only differentiated by their specials and fatalities.  Out of 7 total characters, two of them even looked identical.  I’ll get to the fatalities in a bit, but mostly Mortal Kombat made for a pretty shallow fighting game compared to its competition.  And, I guess, what’s even more striking about Mortal Kombat is that the franchise stayed this way for some time but maintained a level of popularity that is more or less completely incongruent with most other Acclaim/Midway titles.  I don’t know many gamers who would consider the Midway logo as much more than a seal of mediocrity.  Sort of like the Nintendo Seal of Quality today (burn).

So many choices! Decidedly less stereotypes, though! Progress?

The original Mortal Kombat for SNES was a big deal, though.  I remember crowding around the TV the first time a friend rented this game.  I would have been in grade 4 or 5.  There were so many rumors about the game floating around in our tiny, misinformed heads:

“I hear this game is SUPER GORY“.

“Yeah, but Nintendo are a bunch of pussies and made the blood look like sweat! Pussies!”

“I hear on Sega you can see Sonya’s boobies!”

“Oh yeah?  I heard that in the arcade version you can do sex with her!”

“Cool!!!” (awkward boners abound)

“I heard that there’s a code to make it even more bloody!”

“Chris’ brother heard from a magazine that if your parents split up they’ll each buy you this game to prove that they love you!”

“No way!”

I actually wrote a completely different review before thinking about the ways that Mortal Kombat has been influential.  Just think about your life with Video Games at the age of 10.  If you were a console kid like I was, you probably had your Ninja Turtles, Double Dragon, Mario, Ninja Gaiden, Tetris… I dunno.  Ducktails?  For many of us Mortal Kombat was the first Hyperviolent game we ever played.  Everything before this was cartoony.  Even though the greyish-brown bio-chunks that flew out of fighters in the Super Nintendo version didn’t look like blood, our imagination certainly filled in the gaps just fine. But here were people, digitally rendered and motion captured, being impaled by spikes, set on fire, having their spinal cords ripped out.  And it was happening in our living room.  Even if you were from a family with a computer, Wolfenstein came out the same year as Mortal Kombat.  Doom came out in 1993.  Sure, some PC games had covered serious subjects like rape and brutal violence before, but few games were as accessible to enterprising kids as this holy trinity of gore.

Certainly, by today’s standards, Mortal Kombat is pretty tame.  After playing games like Soldier of Fortune where each body part has a number of articulation points for having limbs sawn off, it almost seems as cartoony as those older games.  Fallout 3 had hilarious limbular explosions in HD slow-motion!  But Mortal Kombat was likely one of the first games that you or someone you know wasn’t allowed to play.  It was a precursor to the congressman-based fervor of Grand Theft Auto.  It played a leading role in the eventual development of the ESRB.  Sure, a lot of parents ignore ESRB ratings even today, but they cried out for a rating system in the first place largely thanks to kids bringing Mortal Kombat home.

It’s other “legacy” is the more dubious one of ridiculous announcers.  Fatality, Babality, Finish Him, Toasty… they all lead to the Headshot, Multikill, Double Kill, Running Riot, Killamanjaro, and Unstoppables of today.  I could actually do without these though, so thanks Mortal Kombat.

Gender roles, you guys.

So yeah, it’s a shitty fighting game, but it might very well have changed the landscape of gaming as we know it.  That’s pretty neat.  And with the demise of Midway and the sale of the Mortal Kombat IP to Warner Brothers, I’m not sure we’ll see a return of the shock-value tuned, mediocre experience that so defined the series.  Who knows, someone make even take the initiative to turn it into something worth playing again.

Quebec woman dies after contracting H1N1 virus

A 42-year-old Quebec woman has died from complications resulting from the H1N1 virus.

It is the third death in the province since September.

The woman, who worked at the Monteregie Health and Social Services Centre, died Tuesday night.

Public health officials said the woman was not a nurse or front line worker who was in contact with patients.

She had also received the H1N1 vaccination on Oct. 29, two days before coming down with symptoms of the flu.

Families with babies under 6 months, people with weak immune systems and their family members, will be vaccinated on Thursday instead of Friday. Same goes for children under the age of 5.

It’s so easy for us to recall the hundreds of times we splash through a puddle or slight rivulet of water as we drive through the streets to or from work.

Sometimes we should be slowing down to consider IF we should be driving through high water along the route. It doesn’t take but a few seconds for a stream to grow into a surging river — one that can overcome our vehicle and put us in harm’s way.

We’ve had a fatality in North Little Rock overnight. Let’s not add to the horror experienced by that family.

Black People and chilly weather are not best friends. They are not even on speaking terms. If you’ve ever met someone who has hiked up a snowy mountain like Mount Everest or K2, chances are they were not a Black Person. This is because Black People do not hike up snowy mountains (or any mountain, for that matter) in addition to having an aversion to the cold.

Black People are a tropical people. Dark skin does not absorb light and heat as easily as pale skin, so most Black People can only be truly comfortable while operating in warm temperatures.

This, of course, is the sole reason why Black People have not yet been able to conquer the NHL. The Black Community has been lobbying for years to get central heating installed in all hockey rinks for just this reason, but have yet to be successful.

If you have invited a Black Person to your home and they refuse to leave, just turn the heat off. If it is summer time, use a fire extinguisher. Chilly temperatures are like kryptonite to Black People. The only exceptions to this rule is in relation to beer and ice cream, and even those can be risky (brain freeze has been known to cause fatalities in Black People on more than one occasion).

I did make it out to second night of Nightmare Fest, and it was a reasonably kickass show.

The turn out was low considering the caliber of the bands that were performing. I was told that the first night was just as low. (My rant about low turnouts in Toronto is coming soon…) The people who did come out certainly made up for the people who didn’t show up.

Immrama didn’t play. I never found of out why. It’s too bad since I haven’t seen them yet.

All of the bands brought a ton of energy and enthusiasm to the stage. There were a couple sarcastic comments from the stage about the low turnout. (My rant about “preaching to the choir” to also come later.) My compliments, however, to the ever-professional Blackguard who reversed this trend by praising the enthusiasm of the fans that did come out.

Empyrean Plague debuted two new song; both of them were awesome.

Blackguard played Arm Yourself for the first time in AGES. Since this is on of my favourite songs, this just about made my night. (as almost made up for getting hit in the head by both Terry and Paul. Almost. grrr…)

As is common with many of these shows held in venues that function primarily as dance clubs, we were kicked out early (which cut Blackguard’s set short) to make space for the Dancing Goth Kids.

I’ve been stealing set lists off of stages since 2004. I have a 2″ binder bursting with these lists. The more tape, footprints, and spilled beer, the better.
