So yesterday morning, I was reading a devotional by one of my all time favorite authors, Charles Spu

So yesterday morning, I was reading a devotional by one of my all time favorite authors, Charles Spurgeon.

Oh I just love him.

But this year (and last year and I will do it next year too) I have been reading his daily devotional “Morning & Evening”. As I was reading yesterday morning, Saturday, November 28th, I got excited when I read this:

“In us truth must be a living force, an active energy, an indwelling reality, a part of the woof and warp of our being… a Christian can die, but he cannot deny the truth… it is said that the food of certain worms colours the cocoons of silk which they spin: and just so the nutriment upon which a man’s inward nature lives gives a tinge to every word and deed proceeding from him.”

My dear friend Amaris was over at the time, and when she walked in my room I said, “Amaris, Spurgeon was very fibery this morning.” It is amazing how a few simple words spark my interest even more than it was sparked before: woof, weft, color, silk, spin.

Then I went on to think (and said this to Amaris as well) about one of my very favorite passages in the scripture that I often read, think about, and use as an example for how to work and be.

(I actually did a whole series on this in a girls Bible study I have back in Savannah, because even though we aren’t married now, we can’t magically become this amazing woman overnight.)

Proverbs 31: 10-31

A wife of noble character:

10 Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?
She is more precious than rubies.
11 Her husband can trust her,
and she will greatly enrich his life.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.

13 She finds wool and flax
and busily spins it.
14 She is like a merchant’s ship,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household
and plan the day’s work for her servant girls.

<sup>16</sup> She goes to inspect a field and buys it;
with her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She is energetic and strong,
a hard worker.
<sup>18</sup> She makes sure her dealings are profitable;
her lamp burns late into the night.

19 Her hands are busy spinning thread,
her fingers twisting fiber.
20 She extends a helping hand to the poor
and opens her arms to the needy.
21 She has no fear of winter for her household,
for everyone has warm clothes.

22 She makes her own bedspreads.
She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns.
23 Her husband is well known at the city gates,
where he sits with the other civic leaders.
24 She makes belted linen garments
and sashes to sell to the merchants.

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity,
and she laughs without fear of the future.
26 When she speaks, her words are wise,
and she gives instructions with kindness.
27 She carefully watches everything in her household
and suffers nothing from laziness.

28 Her children stand and bless her.
Her husband praises her:
29 “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world,
but you surpass them all!”

<sup>30</sup> Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last;
but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
31 Reward her for all she has done.
Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.

I absolutely love this passage. Many women do. But I think the reason I love it so much is not just because this woman is incredible and has amazing character and is a trustworthy wife, speaks with wisdom, and is praised by her husband and children, but because she is a hard worker, working on the same things I work on!

She is a spinner, a good cook, a business woman, spends and invests her money wisely, works hard on profitable things, serves her community, provides clothes for her family, is a quilter!, is fashionable!, makes linen clothes!, laughs!, is kind, is never lazy, is wise, and is married to a man with a god reputation.

She is great. I love reading that passage because it inspires me to do better than what I am doing, and to not be satisfied with the things I’ve already done. I also love relating fibers and the Bible. I love that she can not only be a spiritual example to me, but a physical example to me.

I love it.

Ah, the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex! One of the coolest dinosaurs ever. However, most replicas of this

Ah, the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex! One of the coolest dinosaurs ever. However, most replicas of this guy are rather crude and don’t do the dinosaur justice – But this one by kinto surely does!

Let’s start off with the sculpt. Quite simply, it’s very good. The detail is insane, it rivals that of the Papo Tyrannosaurus! The legs are very nice and thick, not extremely thin like some of the Carnegie Collection theropods. There are even little scales sculpted on the toes of this beast, like many (if not all?) birds have today. The hallux toes are separately sculpted and point backwards, maybe by just a little too much. There are nicely sculpted traces of muscle and tendons in the legs and feet. The tail is very thick with incividually sculpted scales all over it, with the occasional wrinkle here and there (the wrinkles almost make the tail look fat though), and it is somewhat raised into the air. The arms are an appropriate size, and they aren’t pronated! That’s always a plus. There’s a lot of wrinkles around the chest area. The head and neck are turned to the right. The neck is correctly S-shaped and there are many wrinkles on the right side, just like there should be. The head itself is very nice. It has a very short and blunt skull, and it’s very wide. There are no towering pyramidal osteoderms over the eyes, instead there are those little “bumps” that are shown in the Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons. The eyes are appropriately beady, they are yellow with tiny black circular pupils suggesting that this was a diurnal animal. The nostrils are too high up on the snout, however, as it’s now thought that most dinosaurs had their nostrils more towards the end of their snouts. It has just about the right number of cream-colored teeth and a tongue is sculpted in the mouth, although it’s a little crude. The mouth is a purple-ish brown. The connective tissue at the back of the jaws isn’t painted purple or pink or anything, it’s just the same color as the rest of the animal– I find that odd, as most dinosaur reconstructions have them as a different color. The temporal fenestrae are nicely sculpted, but all other fenestrae appear to be missing. This figure stands very well on two feet and the sculpt is in 1/50th scale, making it slightly smaller than most other mass-produced Tyrannosaurus rex figures.

The color scheme on this figure is very nice. It’s mostly a sandy color all over, with darker brown stripes going down the body. The claws are all painted black. The stomach/underside isn’t painted a separate color, I wish it was. There’s at least three other color variations of this figure; two are extremely rare versions found only in japan, and the other is just like this figure but in a greenish color scheme.

Overall, this is an exceptional figure that belongs in every dinosaur lovers’ collection. This has to be my favorite T-rex I own. I give it 5/5. It’s available here: http://www.healthstones.com/

(another note- This is oftentimes advertised as a “soft” model, however this is most certainly NOT the case– It’s only soft compared to resin figures, but the plastic it’s made from is a little harder than the carnegie dinosaur figures but a little more soft than the unpainted invicta figures)

I finished The Unlikely Disciple a week or so ago and have been thinking about it ever since, wonder

I finished The Unlikely Disciple a week or so ago and have been thinking about it ever since, wondering what I was going to say about such a unique book. It’s easy to jump to the conclusion that Kevin Roose was making an unfavorable statement about the evangelical community, but the book is much more complex than that.

Kevin is a sophomore at Brown University in Providence, RI who, instead of taking a semester in Italy or Australia, decides to transfer to Liberty University, Jerry Falwell’s college in VA for evangelical youth. While working with A.J. Jacobs (author of The Year of Living Biblically), Kevin got the idea to transfer and write a book about his experiences. Raised in a pretty non-religious Quaker home, Kevin was curious and a little skeptical about the evangelical community.

Kevin’s integration into Liberty University, from his homophobic and manic roommate to his attendance at a “Chronic Masturbators” group, is an eye-opening experience, for both Kevin and the reader. For every “crazy” rule (no hugging for more than three seconds) there is a touching moment and a real understanding and appreciation of the values of his peers. Kevin develops true friendships with his classmates at Liberty and there is an underlying reluctance for the reader to realize that Kevin is not who his friends think he is. And Kevin has a hard time coming to grips with this as well. It’s so sad to watch Kevin “break up” with his Christian crush Anna and essentially lie to his friends, who he is becoming so close to. We grow to really like Jersey Joey and Zipper, even if we don’t fully understand or agree with their belief system.

Kevin pulls out all the stops in his semester at Liberty – he sings in the church choir, interviews Jerry Falwell for an article in the school paper and goes on a missionary trip to try to convert spring breakers in Florida. There comes a point when Kevin is torn between the concern of his family, especially his gay aunts, and the friendships he’s formed at Liberty. But Kevin’s hilarious narrative emphasizes the fact that these worlds can safely collide, with just a little effort from both sides.

Although parts of this book were difficult to read (Liberty kids have no qualms about throwing around the word “faggot” and the double standard between men and women was frustrating), I truly enjoyed reading about Kevin’s journey. I think tolerance and understanding of others, no matter what their beliefs, are underrated in today’s society. And I commend Kevin for bringing a new light to a community which I’m sure many of us have only stereotypical views of. If everyone were as caring as some of Kevin’s Liberty friends, the world world would be a better place. As long as they stop using the word “faggot.”

A gift that is sure to knock the “Red Sox” off of any sports collector is a custom frame

A gift that is sure to knock the “Red Sox” off of any sports collector is a custom framed jersey. Collectors of framed jerseys don’t always restrict their collecting to only one particular player or team. The choices of what jerseys to collect are endless. Pick your favorite current player, a classic Hall of Famer or a new hot rookie. Collectors often cross over and collect jerseys of athletes from a multitude of sports.

A quality custom framed jersey should be double matted and the overall frame size is usually 32×40 inches or 36×48. The jersey should be hand pinned either vertically (generally baseball and basketball jerseys) or horizontally (generally football and hockey jerseys) although space limitations on a wall vary so any jersey can be framed to the preference of the collector. Metal or wood frames are used and team colored matting makes a jersey a piece of art that literally pops off the wall and becomes the focal point of any room. Glass or plexi-glass can be used in the jersey frame but keep this one rule in mind when exhibiting any signed collectibles: “sunlight is your enemy!” Even UV protection doesn’t prevent sunlight from damaging and discoloring items. Blinds, drapes or black out shades are a good way to protect your collectibles during daylight hours. The most important thing is to make sure that no sunlight comes into a room directly onto your jersey or any signed collectible.

Authenticity is #1 so don’t be afraid to ask questions about when and where a jersey signing took place. You want to have a good feeling when you look up at your wall. Your local sports collectible store should be willing to answer your questions and educate you. A super good deal doesn’t mean that the item is necessarily genuine. Provenance is #1 and there are many legitimate sellers with genuine collectibles that can also offer you what would be considered a good deal. Shop around for a solid source offering genuine autographed jerseys with quality framing. Contact your local sports collectibles store and ask them about their selection of custom framed jerseys. Most custom jersey frame jobs are priced between $250 and $400. Most custom framed jerseys are priced between $400 and $1000. Naturally there are some signed jerseys that are more expensive: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Ted Williams, Lebron James, Kobe Brant, Pele and others.

When a sports fan receives a custom framed jersey as a gift it is something that they will have for the rest of their lives. They will display it with pride, look at it every day and probably pass it down as a family heirloom. A professional might have a custom framed jersey displayed in their office as an “ice breaker” and “conversation piece”. Some corporations have sports jerseys and memorabilia on display in their conference rooms. Many business usa custom framed jerseys as incentives and rewards to their outstanding employees. Make a big splash by giving a custom framed jersey as a gift this coming holiday season or any time of year.

Dear J-

And so today I’m thankful for zzz … folks like to shout out their favorite holidays — Thanksgiving and Halloween being some of the popular choices, as for most of us, they involve a lot of food and generally warm feelings (especially for those of us who don’t spend the day slaving over a stove — I offer, but everyone knows better by now than to let me anywhere near edible preparations). Christmas tends to be a bit too much pressure for most to really enjoy: between preparations for guests and fighting crowds, everyone spends the first few weeks of December in a sour mood.

Thanksgiving in the States, on the other hand, sneaks up like a favored cousin: you run along high on sugar for a couple of days after the candy-fest of Halloween, stop off for Veteran’s Day on the way, and before you know it you’re stuck on the road with a million other drivers on the way to the inevitable overindulgence. And yet if it wasn’t for the traffic today would have been nigh-perfect, figgy running around and charming after the initial shyness (she has learned how to kiss, albeit moistly), good food, good company, good memories: the cousin confessing her wishbone wish hoping all days could be like this.

We have holidays to remind us of different things: Labor Day isn’t just a day off, New Year’s Day is redolent with the promise of fresh starts, but it shouldn’t take a special day set aside to proclaim what we’re thankful for. We’re all some mother’s child, after all.

My attempt at a blog post mini-series. Yotsuba&! I love slice-of-life series. I mean, what

My attempt at a blog post mini-series.

Yotsuba&!

I love slice-of-life series. I mean, what’s not to like? Well, okay, they aren’t for everyone. Slice-of-life series’ barely have any plot, and no action. The only thing that develops are the characters in the series, and most are simply dismissed as boring and uneventful. More often then not these underrated gems are labeled “moe” (with or without the word ‘porn’ after it) and are passed up in favor of, I don’t know, Naruto or something.

Of course, I won’t deny that slice-of-life series aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and they can be downright boring and creepy sometimes. I will, however, object to the assumption that an episode of Code Geass surpasses Strawberry Marshmallow. I object to the assumption that just because a series looks cute means it’s a terrible series not worth the digital cels it’s printed on. Of course, I’m not the most persuasive person out there, and I really can’t downright say that series a is better than series b, but I can showcase some exceptional gems that can, at the very least, compare with Bleach.

So, what makes a series a slice-of-life series? While there’s no specific criteria to what makes a series this or that, there are some general guidelines that most series follow that place them in one genre or the other.

1. Nothing Happens. Well, that’s a little general. Nothing much happens in the way of plot would be more accurate. Even more specific would be “nothing much happens in the way of plot, and if it does than it is spread out across a large stretch of the series”. The only thing that actually develops are the characters, and even then that’s usually minimal.

2. It showcases the relatively normal lives of a group of characters. That means no super-secret gay relationships (sorry, Complex) or loli/shota undertones (lookin’ at you, Today in Class 5-2). While these series may claim to be slice-of-life, they’re more fantasy than anything. Admittedly, they do follow the lives of relatively normal people, but they, well, develop their characters and their relationships. But, hey, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go read them (winkwinknudgenudge).

3. Even if it is set in an alternate universe nothing extremely dramatic happens. Basically, you could picture yourself and your regular life in this universe and nothing would change drastically. Pretty self-explanatory.

4. You can relate somehow to the struggles these characters go through. Meaning that you could easily sympathize with these characters without really trying. If someone’s dad has died, you can empathize, because five bucks someone close to you has died. If said character decides to take revenge on all who surround them and their father’s death then it would be pretty hard to empathize with them or their decisions because you can’t imagine yourself doing something like that.

Of course, these rules haven’t been proven by anyone, but they seem to indicate generally what makes a slice-of-life series.

There must also be a line to indicate what a good vs. bad slice-of-life series is. I’ll try to take a non-elitist approach and clarify my opinions, but bare with me.

One, the viewer, me or you or Freddy Bob Jones, must be able to explain a series’ good points (e.g. the narrative style) and give a clear and convincing position that a series is not just loli-fodder for the shut-in otaku. This must also be evident in the series itself without clarification, so that Jane Laura Laney can watch this series and see its merits without having it explained to her. Even if certain fetishes are used, such as school uniforms or maid outfits, they relate to or are the believable consequence of the plot or a certain event. Basically, they must prove themselves not to be pure fan pandering.

Two, the characters must be likable. I don’t care what your particular favorite character traits are, you must be able to genuinely care about the characters and not cringe every time they come on screen. These characters also need to act like real people and, give or take a few actions they take, you couldn’t pick them out from a person walking on the street. This means that they can act annoying, because that’s what real people do, but either redeem themselves or not toe the line to the extent that we dislike them for the rest of the series.

Lastly, they can be either be humorous or relaxing, etc, but never genuinely boring. There can be slow parts and the like but these vignettes can never take up the majority of the series. While not every fan will like the series, based on its genre, premise, or the like, you, the viewer, must be able to read/watch the series without yawning or considering checking Facebook. It must be engaging, and this rule not only pertains to slice-of-life but anime as a whole.

While this doesn’t fit everyone’s criteria of a series, I think these are things that everyone at least considers (unless, of course, we’re talking guilty pleasures, which are another beast entirely). I would like to point out that there are different levels of “boring”, but I’ll delve into this when I actually get to the reviewing of a series.

There is a subcategory of slice-of-life that I would like to point to, and that is the 4koma (four-panel) genre. 4koma are series that completely play out through a series of usually vertical, four-paneled comic strips. These usually have a punchline at the end of them and are generally comedic. I say generally because we have series like Shoulder a Coffin Kuro, which dare to defy these guidelines set down by the gods of manga or whatever.

My point being that the genre of 4koma is not the same as a slice-of-life series. There are some major differences. While some 4koma are separated into chapters that focus around the same general idea, they are loosely connected and can’t qualify as “vignettes”, which make up a slice-of-life. Each strip itself could be called a vignette within a chapter, because they are organized like newspaper comics with each strip having its own title. The chapters themselves never really have conclusions being that the body of the chapter is loosely related material. Each strip itself has its own conclusion, making it never long enough to become a separate story.

Also, while the characters in slice-of-life series are usually human or animal (e.g Chii’s Sweet Home) the characters of 4koma can be anything ranging from Budda to a donut. You can’t easily relate to, or even be particularly empathetic, toward either of these things. You cannot relate to Budda because, well, he’s Budda and you can’t relate to a donut because it’s a frikkin’ donut. Case in point being that many 4koma series have characters that are not human and are not easily relate-able too.

Putting aside Budda and donuts, I will make an exception toward the first difference between 4koma and slice-of-life and concede that there is one way the former can be considered the latter: anime. Yes, anime, where even the most loosely connected comic strips can be combined to form humorous and related vignettes. Even if the episodes are only five minutes long they still connect various strips to form a coherent storyline. Thus, anything I will review based on a 4koma will be the anime version of it.

Well, did I make a long-winded enough post for ya? I just wanted to be clear on a few things I will be judging the series I showcase here on and decided to explain them here instead of each related post.

While I can’t exactly make up a definitive list I do have a few series in mind, which will be listed here. They are in no particular order.

~Yotsuba&!

~Azumanga Daioh

~Aria

~Alto

~Hourou Musuko

~Potemayo

~Saturn Apartments

The first review will hopefully be posted soon.

Ako man mismo ay maraming nakakahiligang inumin ilan na rito ang green mango shake, sterilized milk, probiotic milk-like, (iced or hot) coffee at iced tea.

Mabuhay at isa itong gawang Pinay!
