His is a striking voice- a deep baritone croon which creeps from the speakers, quite at odds with the spring weather and warm sunshine on my face as I laze about on the back porch. My friend and I have just come back from Waterloo Records after poring over the vinyl for an hour or so. I’m on  a budget money-wise and luggage-wise and I managed to resist the temptation to buy anything. But my friend brought Four by Scott Walker, which is now spinning on the record player. Never having heard him before, I’m trying to reconcile the voice, the grandiose music, and those dark lyrics.

It’s nearly two years later now and I have spent November listening obsessively to Scott Walker’s first four solo albums, which fit much more easily with the changeable moods of early summer in Wellington. I now own Four on vinyl too, thanks to Slowboat Records, and it’s playing as I try to pick one favorite song from each album to post here.

Two things are well known about Walker- one, that he isn’t well known, and two, that despite this, he is highly influential. Let me clarify- not that he isn’t a familiar name, but rather he’s a mystery and a famous recluse, and when I say influential, I think Jarvis Cocker, David Bowie, Radiohead, Bat For Lashes, a few among many. One of the first people renowned for playing bass guitar, Walker got his break in the UK as one of The Walker Brothers- a 1960’s pop group that were brothers only to pander to the fashion for sibling groups at the time. Fame, subsequent group break up, intense fan attention, subsequent suicide attempt, foiled by fan, introduced to the music of Jacques Brel by a Playboy bunny (‘His voice was like a hurricane through the room’), solo career- One, Two (then the increasingly avant-garde) Three, Four. Retreat into MOR in the 1970’s, reunion with The Walker Brothers, and since then, sporadic but amazing solo albums- most recently The Drift, in 2006. There is also a documentary on him out there called 30th Century Man, which I have yet to watch.

Although music snob opinion generally dictates that Three and Four are the only albums from his early solo career worth hearing- I think that all four of them are completely amazing, though I do consider Four a favorite. One and Two are mainly covers of Brel songs, and some Tim Hardin ones, while Three and Four consist mainly of his own work. It is difficult to describe what his music means to me- it is nostalgic, beautiful, but also full of grotesque imagery and horror (his cover of Amsterdam springs to mind), and a slight sense of dread lingers in the music (the strings on It’s Raining Today for one). The more I write about it, the more I know it simply needs to be heard.

The Dutchess and The Duke are one of those bands that I’ve come across and wondered how I haven’t found them earlier. The duo from Seattle, consisting of Jesse Lortz and Kimberley Morrison, released the amazing debut She’s The Dutchess, He’s The Duke last year, and have recently released the follow-up Sunset/ Sunrise on the wonderful little label Hardly Art (home to Le Loup and Golden Triangle to name some favorites).

I’m still digesting Sunset/ Sunrise, which involves slightly more ambitious arrangements and optimism, but She’s The Dutchess, He’s The Duke has wormed its way into my heart, with little resistance. Most reviews compare them to early Rolling Stones, but the dark tone of the lyrics and super spare set up of acoustic guitars and minimal hand percussion which provide foil for the pop melodies makes me think southern gothic- or western, if you will. It’s all in the accents.

Lortz likes to pull apart the darker inclinations, his darker inclinations- it’s no secret that much of the lyrical content is autobiographical. So you hear about how we’re lifted and ruined by love, people gone from our lives and the ones we want to run from, the keepers, the take-it-or-leavers. Though grim, it is never overbearingly so- the upbeat guitar, brevity of the songs and album length always leaves me slightly stunned at conclusion, like there are gaps to fill in.

It is simple, one shot of the band with some acted footage being projected on to them as they sing along- it is without a doubt one of the most literal interpretations of song lyrics I have ever seen. Beach Fossils are the band your friend introduced you to when you both pulled sickies to get off work and drive to the beach in the rain. Because it was Spring. Chain smoking rollies, you started the car every hour to make sure the radio wouldn’t run the battery dead, and watched the waves break on the rocks through the fog on the windscreen.

Beach Fossils – Daydream

Daydream is my favorite pop song of the year- it hums with warmth, with a strange shimmer to it from the heavy reverb on the vocals. To me, it feels at once now and past, nostalgic but in the moment (I guess that’s known as timeless?). Dustin Payseur, the person behind Beach Fossils,  is still a rather anonymous entity on the internet- all I know is that he hails from Brooklyn, NYC and that he’s affiliated with the Woodsist crew, but what great bands aren’t these days?*

No album as yet, but I’ve got my fingers crossed…

I was thankful to be born in Sirran family, we are poor, no land and in other words, my great, great, great grandfather is a slave to a rich man who also my great, great, great grandfather…in Sirran branch, im one of Cikgu Majingin a.k.a my grandfather grand daughter…yes we are poor, yes we live in ’sulap’, yes my grandpa is a teacher and salary only RM30 per MONTH (Bristish time), yes we had a very hard time, yes we are Seventh Day Adventist, and yes we are SO CLOSE with each other…

my grandmother always remind us(grandchilds) what ever happen in our family, no matter what happend, we must stick together, sit together, and solve what ever problem that come to us…because of POOR, we are strong as a family.

I always want to watch Dreamgirl but I dont have the time to finish it at one time…sometimes when the movie start at channel 411(astro of course), my mom will ask me to send her, send my grandma, or do others thing and by the time I free, the movie almost finish…

so yesterday, i manage to watch it ALL, no skip and the result….I LOVE DREAMGIRL soooooooo MUCH…..99% out of 100%(cannot give full marks..haha)…and since i LOVE JAZZ and CLASSIC soooooo MUCH….i fall in love with this song…please enjoy the lyric and the melody of the song…plus, love Jennifer Hudson sooooo much…her voice is SUPERB…

I’m not really a Tarantino fan, so I haven’t actually seen anything else from Deathproof other than this lap dance scene- but oh my and mercy me, what a scene! Mainly for the music, a totally killer track by an old Doo-wop band called The Coasters- also known for their hits ‘Yakity-yak’ and ‘Charlie Brown’. Not exactly great songs, ‘Yakity-yak’ in particular definitely makes me, well… yak.  But I promise that ‘Down In Mexico’, their first single, is nothing short of awesome. I’ve been thrashing this on the show and will be playing it for sure when we DJ at The Watusi this Friday night.My favorite song at the moment, the video above doesn’t really do it justice as it cuts it short, losing the spoken word section, so I’ve put the full version of the song and some more ramblings after the jump.

I have a dear friend of mine to thank for drawing my attention to this song- it is somewhat of a lost classic. I love the horns, bongo solo (!), Carl Gardner’s lead vocal and the way he plays with the lyrics- mexicali (especially the strong upward inflection on it in the opening line), making piano rhyme with bandanna, and how when he sings it you really feel like he’s telling you a story, letting you in on a little secret about that slightly feral honky-tonk bar- you know, ’cause you’re already headed down there and all…
