Fabrik reader is new on the Android market. What makes this reader different from others is the ability to sync your ebooks with your dropbox. Now whats great about this feature is that it also sync’s the reading progress on multiple devices, so if you’re reading a book on your tab and for some reason decide to finish it on your phone, you can. The tablet optimized two column landscape reading mode makes it ideal for any tabs.

Supported E-book formats include txt, ePub and mobi formats with support for more to come soon.

Check out Fabrik free on the play store

I’ve just finished work on a new dictionary for FBReader on Android (FBReaderJ). The code is o

I’ve just finished work on a new dictionary for FBReader on Android (FBReaderJ). The code is on my github account (a fork from geometer’s official version, which is available from the official website or the official github account). It doesn’t look like much at the moment, and frankly the code’s a little bit of a mess, but it reads the dictionary files! And it puts words on the screen! Seriously, what more could you ask for??!

Anyway, the main reason I wanted to do this was that as far as I could see there didn’t seem to be a suitable open-source Android dictionary app to go alongside FBReaderJ. At the moment the only option is to install a closed-source App, which FBReader uses as an external service. This meant that there was nothing to work on to make the customisations I wanted to make. So I thought I’d remedy the situation!

What customisations, you might ask? Well, it may sound silly, but one major thing was that I wanted to be able to move from one entry to another without having to press the screen twice. The existing support requires you to press the screen to make an entry disappear, before pressing it again to bring up another one. Small, but can have a high impact on usability, particularly for a language learner.

Of course, I’ve since realised that my efforts were probably largely unnecessary. I probably didn’t have to reimplement StarDict dictionary support for Java – that was already available as part of the (mostly extinct) babiloo project, it seems. Also, I possibly could have figured out how to use the Android APIs to do a textual query to some service provided by (closed-source) ColorDict or something (not sure about this; what I’m really thinking of is the Android Quick Search Box functionality, and as far as I can see [from this page], it brings up its own dialog on screen). Also it’s just occurred to me that I might have been able to get the ColorDict Activity to behave in a similar way by giving it some kind of rendering hints in the Intent or something. I don’t know.

On the other hand, there are other customisations that I want to make, but more on those another time…

Well anyway, here’s a free screenshot in case you don’t believe me. As you can see, it’s not displaying the whole entry (but this should be comparatively simple to fix). The text is from WordNet, I believe.

Right, now I’m off to bed ’cause it’s one o’clock in the morning. Either that or to stay up all night coding on my next crazy idea. Not quite sure yet.

Lately, as part of my efforts to learn French, I’ve been trying to read Rivarol’s French

Lately, as part of my efforts to learn French, I’ve been trying to read Rivarol’s French translation of Dante’s Inferno on my Android mobile phone. I’ve mostly been using Kindle, but I have also tried FBReader. I’m not sure what format Kindle uses, but with FBReader(J) I’ve been using the ePub version from gutenberg.org.

One problem I’ve been finding is that all of the end-notes are at the end of the chapter (as you might expect), and it is hard to flip back and forth between the end-note and its reference. To remedy this, I decided to find a way to make the end-notes appear as “popup” boxes over the main text. Unfortunately, this was not directly possible with the fairly limited ePub format (or, at least, not with FBReaderJ). A simple solution was to (1) put all of the end-notes at the end of the document, rather than the end of the chapter (so that you wouldn’t have to skip over them), (2) create hyperlinks allowing you to jump back and forth between each reference and its corresponding end-note, and (3) put a page break after each end-note entry so that you only see one at a time. To achieve (3), one way in FBReaderJ is to simply put a new level-2 heading at the start of each entry, which causes it to be put on a new page.

Luckily, the ePub format is very simple, consisting of just a few XML files contained in a ZIP archive, with the actual content being stored in XHTML format. My usual approach to this kind of problem would be to hack something up in Perl using regexps. However, this time, I decided to do something in Java, partly because I had some kind of idea that I might try to integrate it into FBReaderJ at some stage. This has probably led to it taking twice as long and ending up twice as complex, but on the other hand it has improved my knowledge of Java’s XML libraries.

Here is an example of the result, looking at a paragraph from Dante’s “l’Enfer” chapter 18 (the text is public-domain). Notice the blue link reading “[end-note 1]“. Before processing, this was simply “[1]” (and not a link). I added “end-note” to make it a bigger target.

And here is what you get if you click it:

…And there’s a link back to the reference’s location in the main text. As you can see, the link text I have added is in English. In retrospect, perhaps it should be in French .

It took surprisingly long to write the code for this, considering how simple it seems now. But I did have to update the OPF descriptor file, and the toc file as well, and create tables of all the relevant ids to create the links, and then separate the end-notes out into a separate document so they could all go at the end without risking hitting some obscure ePub file size limitation, all while wrestling with the w3c DOM in Java… you get the picture . I think my program should work with all of the rest of the ePubs in the same series (Rivarol’s French Dante – so far I’ve only tried it with l’Enfer [Inferno]), and it should be fairly easy to adapt it to work with slightly differently formatted documents.

I am continuing to work on trying to make FBReader a better platform for language learning. I have a funny feeling my next stop is going to be to do something with ColorDict…

I own a Samsung Galaxy Y which runs in an Android Gingerbread OS. I download my apps through Google

I own a Samsung Galaxy Y which runs in an Android Gingerbread OS. I download my apps through Google Play which was called Android Market back then. I am a very busy person with a very erratic schedule and my phone provides me convenience in accessing my files and use programs in a portable system. Here are my top 10 app choices. There are many other apps on my phone but I only picked the ones I use most of the time.

1. Color Note - This is a notepad app which allows me to write notes, memo, email, message, grocery shopping list and of course my to do list. I use this when I need to take notes during class and or while listening to a talk which I need to write an article about. This is very helpful to me mostly as a reminder app. You can choose different colors for different notes for your preferred way of identifying what is the most to least important. Color note also has a calendar in it.

2. Mobile Reader Apps: Adobe Reader and FBReader

Adobe Reader – As a student in a distance education mode, most, if not all, of my reading materials are electronic copies and a lot of them are in PDF formats. It is reliable and free to download for opening PDF documents. Wherever I go, may it be in a hospital or waiting somewhere, I can open my reading materials to make such time productive and catch up with my lessons.

FBReader by Geometer Plus – I recently downloaded this because I downloaded an eBook in mobi file format but I do not have a kindle or the like. I wanted to read the books on my phone so I downloaded this free e-Reader which supports not only mobi formats but also epub, rtf, fb2(.zip), mobi, and plain text file formats.

3. Merriam-Webster - I can Google any word I want to search for its meaning but an offline dictionary will be much helpful if I do not have internet connection on my phone. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary app can be used for reference, education, and vocabulary building. It is free and it also allows voice search mechanism so you need not type the words you are looking for if you want to.

4. Social Networking Apps: Facebook for Android and Twitter

Facebook for Android - As the most popular social networking site, I have my Facebook for Android app to keep up with my friends, share photos and videos instantly, communicate with them through messages, and check into places I go. I can easily post my status updates or check my friends’.

Twitter – Call it a bandwagon but I keep the official Twitter app for timely information, real-time breaking news, trending topics of what is happening around the world. I actually think that more news are quickly disseminated through Twitter. Moreover, I am able to find out what my friends are saying about topics I care about. Unlike many Twitter users, I keep my account private and allows a few selected friends to communicate through it. I am able to tweet, retweet, favorite, follow, exchange direct messages, share photos and links with my friends through Twitter app on my phone.

5. Email Apps: Yahoo! mail and Gmail

Yahoo! mail - My first email account is under Yahoo! Mail and I keep it for most of my online account connections and old contacts. I love the interface of Yahoo! Mail for Android. I can send and receive emails with attachments. I can even access multiple Yahoo! Mail accounts if I need to.

Gmail – I had my Gmail account initially for an academic requirement which I then decided to use for more personal email communication and for my private accounts. Like my Yahoo! Mail app, Gmail allows me to send and receive emails with attachments and access multiple accounts. It also allows me to read my conversations even if I am offline.

6. Games Apps: Bubble Shoot and Fruit Ninja

Fruit Ninja - I honestly do not like installing games on my laptop and my phone for I can get addicted to it to a point that affects my productivity but come on! I also need to have some fun and unwind even in between working with my tasks or kill boredom so this is one of the few games I play and got addicted to. Fruit Ninja is a fruit smashing game which has become popular. I love the sound effects, the zen feeling while playing it, and the information bits it displays after each game. I even made a game review of it.

Bubble Shoot - This is another fun and addictive game wherein the goal is to clear all the bubbles on the screen by shooting bubbles with the same colors to burst and clear everything before any bubble could descend and reach the line. I love the various designs of bubbles aside from its different colors.

7. Camera Apps: FxCamera and Pixlr-o-matic

FxCamera - When I first downloaded FxCamera, it did not have so much effects as it has today. It is continuously being updated like most apps and now it has more features and improved performance. FxCamera is a free camera app which lets me use various effects in taking photos. Some of the effects I love are fisheye and toy cam which adds dramatic effect in my photos.

Pixlr-o-matic - I have this camera app both on my laptop and on my phone. Pixlr-o-matic is very easy to use in editing and adding fun retro effects to my photos which transform it into cool looking vintage images. It allows me to add effects, overlays and borders or frames.

8. Holy Bible - It’s a lesser weight on my bag having The Holy Bible app on my phone in New International Version. I can have it anytime and anywhere. It has both The Old Testament and The New Testament. I can adjust the text size and bookmark verses. It also lets me mark my favorite verses in different colors and add notes.

9. Pulse - This news app shows feeds in a sophisticated look which allows me to choose only my preferred categories to be displayed. Pulse makes reading news engaging and even lets me take my favorite websites and turn them into a colorful and interactive mosaic. I can also share news articles through Facebook, Twitter and email instantly.

10. Google Drive - I installed Google Drive for back up and for easy file access anytime and anywhere and even share it with others. I can create, edit, access and upload photos, documents, videos and other files stored on my Google Drive. It can also make a file available offline for me to access them even when I am not connected to the Internet.

According to DigiTimes Research, global shipments of eBook readers expected to reach only 2 million

According to DigiTimes Research, global shipments of eBook readers expected to reach only 2 million units in Q1 2012, down from 9 million shipped in Q4 2011. This isn’t because people are not eReading, but because of the launch of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet PCs, which has resulted in a substitution effect for Kindle eBook readers. As a result, Amazon has reduced its orders for eBook readers from upstream suppliers since the beginning of 2012, said DigiTimes Research.

Overall, global shipments of eBook readers amounted to 22.82 million units in 2011, increasing 107% from a year earlier. DigiTimes Research estimates that annual shipments of eBook readers are expected to top 60 million units by 2015, The major reason for such a big decline is the success of Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet. You could say “success of tablets”, but actually this is a new circumstance. The research states that “Since the introduction of the Nook Color there is no clear distinction any more between an eReader (it used to have an e-ink screen) and a tablet (multipurpose, color-screen). Nook Color is a single-purpose device with a color screen. What’s even more important, Kindle Fire and both color Nooks are highly associated with eBooks, because they were launched by eBookstores. Apparently they became an alternative not for those who wanted to buy a tablet, but those who wanted to buy an eReader.”

One way to get around having that device is to read your eBooks on your smartphone. It’s just as easy and you only have to carry one device around. Of course, you may have to be willing to give up the “eReader experience” much as you have to give up the “book experience.” But, overall, it’s the information gained, the knowledge applied that really counts.

Here are some free eReaders that you can use on a smartphone (depending upon OSes, obviously):

For some reasons, I had to choose between a new, simple Nokia phone (but fortunately not a Windows one!) and my 1-year-old Android phone. Before I leave this Android phone, here are the few 6 Android apps that I really appreciated and used daily.

FBReader is a very nice e-book reader for Android. It supports a lot of e-book formats like epub, fb2, (partially) mobipocket, html, RTF and plain text. It works very well with Calibre (a free software e-book reader / manager / converter) – or is it the opposite? I also really like the fact FBReader can browse and download some free e-books directly from the internet. Of course, reading an e-book on a small 3.2 inch screen isn’t the perfect user experience. However, the night mode (white text on black background) is very handy to read something when it’s late and you don’t want the harsh white background. You can find FBReader on the Android Market for free (it’s a free software, under the GPL).

Google Reader is the Android version of the web-based Google Reader. If you follow RSS/Atom feeds with the latter, you will be interested by its Android version. A very nice feature is that all your feeds will be synchronized between the different versions of your Reader: read a post on your phone and the web version knows you already read it (and vice-versa). This time the small screen isn’t really a handicap since posts are usually quite short (compared to books and short stories you could read on FBReader). Up to a certain version, I thought the Gooogle Reader for Android was not really using all the capabilities of a touch screen. But in a version recently introduced you just have to swipe a post to read the next one (a bit like turning a page with only one finger). You can find Google Reader on the Android Market for free.

Mustard is a Twitter client for Android. It is also a StatusNet client. Being both on Twitter (@jepoirrier) and Identi.ca (@jepoirrier too), it’s quite interesting to be able to read and post on both platform quickly one after the other. I may have missed something but Mustard lacks the possibility to post on all registered platforms at the same time. And it’s impossible to have all timelines merged in a common one with duplicates removed. But apart from this small annoyance, it’s a very good and fast microblogging client. You can find Mustard on the Android Market for free (it’s even a free software – under the GPL).

According to its own introduction, Shuffle is “a personal organizational tool, styled around the Getting Things Done methodology”. In layman’s words, it’s a very easy app to use to remember things you have to do. Beside just adding a note, you can also give them a deadline, a location and a context. I know I didn’t use everything (for instance, I didn’t use the synchronisation feature since I don’t have any Tracks installation) but it’s a nice tool to remember small ideas on the way and help prioritize them (note: a Moleskine is also good for that purpose). You can find Shuffle on the Android Market for free (and it’s even free software - under the Apache license).

Finally, I really liked the last versions of WordPress (the one that introduced the big white panels/buttons in a “dashboard”). First, these last versions crashed much less often than before (in fact I didn’t see them crash anymore). Then, its developers made it easy to quickly approve comment, add pictures/videos directly from the phone, read the stats and edit some previously posted messages (of course, it’s not very handy to edit a lengthy post on a small screen but it’s not WordPress fault here). If you have a blog on WordPress (or using the WordPress engine at your own website), it’s a must. You can find WordPress on the Android Market for free.

One last word about apps for kids (the “sixth” application). The free versions of Whiteboard and Kids ABC Letters are quite interesting for a 3 year-old boy.

As you can read, I mainly use free software (as in free speech) and apps to read things on the phone. Another use is for small, quick, tasks (like posting a tweet or adding something to remember). I think I will be able to live without that

The ePub ebook format is so important because of its reflowable nature. “Reflowable” mea

The ePub ebook format is so important because of its reflowable nature. “Reflowable” means that the text will rearrange itself to fit your screen size. If you increase or decrease the font size, the text also rearranges itself. This is hugely different from standard page displays like those in PDF files. On those files, if you wish to increase the text size, all you can really do is zoom in on the page. eReaders try to let you increase the font size but it always affects the page size as well, cutting off the edges of the pages. If you zoom too far in, you have to scroll sideways back and forth in order to read the a whole line of text. This is the main reason why I think ePub is the best ebook format, and I hope it stays around for a long time.

And because of that, I wanted to compile a list of the best current ePub reading programs that you can use on your computer. Most eReaders can display ePubs, and you can use them on your Android or iOS device (with programs like Aldiko and Bluefire Reader, for example), but not everyone knows which program to use to open them on your computer.

DRM

If you’re going to buy an ePub file that is protected by Adobe’s DRM, you’ll have to use Adobe Digital Editions. Likewise, if you buy an ePub ebook at any specific website that has their own DRM, you’ll probably have to use the software that they recommend, but that depends on the website so I can’t tell you what you need.

Non-DRM

For regular ePub files, you have some choices:

Adobe Digital Editions – You can still use Adobe Digital Editions for non-DRM ePubs. I do because I already have it installed on my computer.

calibre – This is a program that lets you create, organize, and read your ebooks.

EPUBReader – A Firefox addon that allows you to read ePubs directly in Firefox.

FBReader – Works on Linux/Unix and Windows.

Mobipocket Reader – Bought by Amazon a while ago, and seems to be slowly shutting down. Still good for now.

There are others available that you can dig up, but these listed above are the ones that I feel are best. Stanza, for example, can read many ebook formats but ignores a lot of formatting so you end up missing out on the intended design of the book. Because of that I suspect that other readers might do the same thing.

I think that we’ll probably see more programs released as more and more people use the ePub ebook format. Even now I am seeing that ePub and PDF are the most popular (Kindle notwithstanding) and since ePub works best on the widest range of devices, it is the clear winner as far as I am concerned.

Today I was downloading e-books from the website epubbud.com. They have got many books, which we can download for free . But all the downloaded files are .epub files.
ePUB (electronic publication) is a free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). To read a .epub file you need a reader to be installed. You can use either FBReader or EPUBReader.

FBReader : e-book reader for Linux desktops

Steps to install FBReader :
1. Add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/debian stable main
deb-src http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/debian stable main

2. Install PGP key:

Download the key file by clicking on File -> Save Page As and then save that in any folder

Change directory to the folder where the key file is stored and then run :

sudo apt-key add geometer.fbreader.org.asc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libzlui-qt (or sudo apt-get install libzlui-qt4)
sudo apt-get install fbreader

Now you can right-click on the e-book and select E-Book Reader.

EPUBReader : Firefox add-on

Steps to add EPUBReader to your Firefox :

1. Download EPUBReader from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/epubreader/

2. Install it and restart Firefox

Now you can select the book from File -> Open File from Firefox and read.
Enjoy reading!!

Let me begin by saying one thing. I love books. I don’t love books on quite the same level my wife does, but I love them, none the less. The tactile experiences of holding a bound tome in hand, feeling the texture of the paper pages, smelling the aging ink, and enjoying the way light plays on the imperfections in the paper are all things that will always ensure that phsyical books are welcome in my home. Looking at a shelf full of books is a pleasant thing, and few things in life are as exciting as opening a book and finding a long forgotten, pressed four-leaf clover. All that said, there are plenty of reasons for taking advantage of electronic versions of books.

Ebooks are easier to carry than paper books, I can literally carry over 100 books in my pocket in the form of a memory card. I can easily switch titles without getting up, walking across the room, and figuring out which shelf I stored that particular book on. I can change the format of the written word on the fly to ensure that the font is of a comfortable size. Think, too, of the cost (monetary and environmental) and energy that goes into printing books vs. making digital copies available. I know, ereaders aren’t exactly zero-carbon, but when you consider the number of books you can read on one, it doesn’t take long to reach an equilibrium. What I really enjoy, though, is the freedom of having such a wide variety of books available for little or no cost at the touch of a button; try browsing your local library or books-a-million in your underwear and see how far you make it before they throw you out.

Lately, I’ve found myself enamored with older, public domain classics. There’s scads of wisdom and entertainment to be found in the works of some of those long past authors, and there’s a plentiful supply of their writings available for free. As a gentleman beggar, it’s that last word that really grabs my attention–”free”. With programs like Project Gutenberg in action, an ever expanding catalog of history’s knowledge is available at no more than the cost of a few seconds of browsing online and downloading a file. With devices like the Amazon Kindle, Sony eReader, the Kobo, and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, there’s little reason not to take advantage of public domain works.

If you are reading this, you obviously have access to a computer. If the current high price of a dedicated ereading device seems a tad daunting, there’s always software for the pc (mac, iPad, smartphone, too!) that will let you take advantage of pretty much any format ebook you can download. Amazon offers a desktop version of their Kindle software, as does Barnes & Noble. Fbreader is another great option, along with Mobipocket reader, and others. If you find that you need to convert between ebook formats, there’s always programs like Calibre available. The best thing about all these programs? They don’t cost you a dime. My personal favorite right now is Mobipocket reader; it works a treat on my netbook and its two-page at a time view evokes the feeling of an open paperback without the struggle of keeping it open.

If you’re looking for some good ebooks, I can’t recommend the site Manybooks.net enough. It is an awesome online library of public domain and creative commons works, all free of charge. You can search the books by genre, author, title, and in various other ways as well. There’s a special collections section that groups books by theme, and they even have the books organized by Library of Congress categories for those of you who find that convenient. One great feature of the site is the shelf system. Once you register (for free), you can start creating multiple shelves for keeping up with books you’ve found on the site. You can choose to make your shelves available to others, too, if you think others might enjoy your collection. Since finding the site, I’ve downloaded a stack of books that will likely keep me busy reading for a couple of years–all at no cost. Manybooks also links to audio copies of their books, usually recorded by the Librivox project, when available, to those of you who prefer to listen to a good book. Probably the best feature of Manybooks is the plethora of options you have for file formats. They have the books available in most of the major formats including Kindle and Sony eReader compatible files. One really impressive option includes the custom pdf format. You can choose the size you want your pages to be so that the pdf will display properly on the reader of your choice.

So, if you feel like a little reading this evening, get yourself a good ereader program or device, check out manybooks.net and settle in for a grand adventure. Here’s a link to my ever growing shelf to get you started.

I’ve been experimenting with using the Magic as an eBook reader and I’m impressed. I clearly won’t part with my dead-tree books any time soon but it’s really not as bad as I thought it would be. The best Android app for reading eBooks I have found so far is FBReader which is well done and very configurable. The format of choice is ePub and you will find tons of free ones at http://www.feedbooks.com

If you read eBooks in a foreign language, don’t forget to install one of the many nice dictionary apps (I like WordMate) !

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/debian stable main

deb-src http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/debian stable main

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install fbreader

Rapier – para leitura da Bíblia (utilizando-se os arquivos do projeto SWORD, assim poderei testar se a versão da ACF que disponibilizo pode ser instalada nele);

Stardict – para dicionários (também disponibilizo o Dicionário Bíblico para as versões desktop do Stardict);

8.10

Bob DuCharme recently converted 16 children’s books from the Project Gutenberg archive into .e

Bob DuCharme recently converted 16 children’s books from the Project Gutenberg archive into .epub format for use with FBReader on the XO laptop. Thanks Bob!

I’ve just walked through the scenario of downloading the epub files from Bob’s download page and copying them into the correct directory for FBReader to read them. Here are the instructions with screenshots taken directly from the XO. If you see inefficiencies, please let me know because my Linux is only good enough to make me very, very dangerous to files and folders.

Start up the Browse Activity on the XO.

Click in the address bar and press ctrl-A to select all the text, then type in snee.com/epubkidsbooks and press enter.

Scroll down to the book you want to download, and click the link. You’ll see a nice countdown while the file downloads.

Switch over to the Journal Activity, either by pressing the magnifying glass icon key or by going to the Home View and clicking the Journal icon at the bottom of the Home circle.

Insert an SD card or a USB stick into the XO. The Journal shows an icon in a bottom bar when you put in external storage media.

Locate the downloaded epub file, but don’t launch it (they launch as EToys projects, go figure.) Drag and drop the file to the SD or USB icon in the bottom bar.

Click the Home View key and start the Terminal Activity – you have to scroll right to see the Terminal launch icon.

Click in the Terminal window (otherwise you’ll be typing in the Terminal search box). Find the name of the external media, which is in the /media directory. For example, type:

df

You’ll see the name of your SD card or USB stick in the row with /media/ before it. You need that name to copy the epub file from the external media to the correct location for FBReader to find the book file.

Change to the media directory where the epub file is stored and rename the file to something shorter. For example, type:

cd /media/USBMEM
mv "File TheThreeBears.epub downloaded from_http___www.snee.com_ebooks_TheThreeBears.epub..zip" TheThreeBears.epub LittleBoPeep-ANurseryRhymePictureBook.epub

Copy the newly shortened-name file to the ~Books directory. For example, type:

cp TheThreeBears.epub ~/Books

Launch FBReader by typing FBReader at the Terminal prompt.

Tips:

FBReader must be installed on the XO. It’s a simple process. Go to the Terminal Activity and type:

su -c ‘rpm -i http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/updates/7/i386/fbreader-0.8.8-2.fc7.i386.rpm’

If you don’t want to type a whole bunch of text on the little XO keyboard, eject the SD card or pull out the USB stick, and put it in a “regular-sized” computer, and then rename the file there.

Or, plug in a USB keyboard with normal size key layout to do all your typing in the Terminal Activity.

If your USB stick has a space in the name, you can’t use it with your XO. Put it into another computer and rename it without a space.
