As the flat classroom projects enter the final weeks, levels of anxiety start to run rather high amongst the student body – anger, frustration, confusion, indecision, lack of understanding, complacency are many of the emotions and feelings that run high at this stage.
So, as a teacher I need to coax, cajole, coach, encourage, teach all over again, explain, facilitate, survive etc to keep the project’s momentum going.
Some students
•get angry when a wiki war means that they have lost their hard earned work that had been added to their group page on the wiki, or worse still, their outsourced video request has disappeared!
•get frustrated as they don’t think they know what they are doing (and I know that they don’t!)
•don’t know what to put in their video
•do not follow appropriate wiki netiquette
•show some indiscretions in relation to digital citizenship
•have not had an outsourced video completed for them
•real time pressures (almost too much to bear) are experienced
To make matters worse, this year, a severe gastroenteritis went through our school with fierce tenacity, crippling it to a near halt, with more than 40% of the student body away for several days over a two or three week time period. With so many interruptions, I wondered “What am I doing here again!”
But then…….the magic begins!
•the student summits are held when students can enter the virtual classroom with their global class mates, talk and chat to each other in real time, work in an immediate virtual team, collaborate on the elluminate whiteboard to work out what outsourced video clips each student required and who would do them.
•At home, amazed parents sit near their student who has come online after school hours to be in the student summit with fellow students from Germany, China, USA, the Middle East etc. The flatclassroom is now highly evident.
•the outsourced videos start to filter on to the ning and there is real excitement in the classroom again
•Students who had been quite frustrated and downcast, exceptionally quiet in the classroom are suddenly stopping me in the corridors telling me about the wonderful clip that has been made for them
•Last minute preparations of final videos, mean that the year 9/10 students come into the computer lab to complete their work at lunchtimes.
•Their interested friends are in there too, to see what is going on and the room just buzzes!!!
•By now, they have learnt the skills of wiki editing, ning socializing, uploading the videos to the ning for final judging
•A high sense of achievement and increased confidence is evident.
Thank you Julie and Vicki for making this all possible – an amazing project to be involved in, at the cutting edge of both technology and education…… and already I cant wait to be involved in the next project. Students are enrolling for their electives for next year and are already coming up and asking, “Will we be doing the flatclassroom project?”

At the top of the invitation list for any think-tank event on the Middle East these days is that huge great big elephant that likes to sit in the room as everyone think-tanks away. And so it was the other night at the Foreign Policy Centre: “How to Deliver Equality for Israel’s Arab Minorities!” The elephant was the Second Intifada and there was no bitterness from the Israeli speaker and there was no culpability from the Palestinian. Everyone happily agreed that there was no elephant in the room. Even the elephant nodded agreement to that.
The FPC likes to do events with an angle, so this one concerned itself with Israeli Arabs, i.e. Arabic citizens of Israel rather than the occupants of the West Bank and Gaza. Mr. Shmuel Ben-Tovim, an economist of the Israeli Embassy represented the Israelis, while Ms Aida Touma-Sliman of the campaign Women Against Violence represented the Palestinians. He was very cerebral, while she came right to the point and said, “We’re treated like shit!”
I was only 19 when I was on Kibbutz Yagur, near Haifa. I knew nothing of politics, but discovered some when I was sent along to a seminar about the conflict. The Israeli speaker was very cerebral and the Palestinian man came right to the point and said, “We’re treated like shit!” That was 1986. So here I am in the year 2009 and I can’t help feeling a sense of déjà vu. I’ve spent the last twenty years hearing Jews be cerebral and Palestinians be pissed off. The only difference between then and now is that then, the Arabs had jobs, and now, they don’t.
What strikes me is how much physical change has happened in the passing years, as compared to the absence of change in the dialogue. In 1986 the whole of Israel was in a building boom, with Palestinians pouring concrete into shuttering from one end of the country to the other. They had jobs and the Israelis were happy to employ them. But always when people from abroad asked about the conflict, the Israelis would be cerebral and the Palestinians would come right to the point: “We’re treated like shit!” Meanwhile the demon of Palestinian violence bubbled away in the background with the stabbings and bombings not being so frequent as to make Israel any more dangerous than New York of the time, but making the Israelis feel unsafe in their own country; making them regret opening the borders in 1967.
Incrementally, over the years, Palestinian rights were removed from them as Israeli frustration gave way to impatience, and antagonism to hate, and eventually hate gave way to simply ignoring the fact that the Palestinians even exist. Today, the lives of Palestinians are a hell behind concrete walls, while Israel has become the silicon valley of the eastern hemisphere. High tech jobs are denied to the Palestinians on security grounds. Asian builders were brought in during the Second Intifada and have been continuing to come in since. When Palestinians bid for a contract alongside the Asians, the contract is awarded to the foreigners, but the Israelis are telling the truth when they insist that the process was transparent; we can see exactly what’s going on. The Israelis no longer wish to share their economy with the people who suicide bombed them. Arguments of human rights were arguments of the left and the Labor Party barely exists anymore. In the land of the co-operative Kibbutzim, where a nation was built through the passionate belief in the state, there is no longer such as thing as a left-wing movement.
Yet against such a dramatic change in circumstances between these two communities the complete absence of change in the way they speak about each other is striking. To this day, the Israelis are cerebral while the Palestinians come straight to the point: “We’re treated like shit!” Nothing appears to have changed in this regard. I find this to be weird.
Imagine a play by Kafka where two protagonists, in their youth, have their feet cast in unbreakable concrete forcing them to spend the rest of their lives together. The play opens with them having an argument over something or other, then the play jumps forward by forty or fifty years and these two are now old men. The whole world has changed around them but they are still having exactly the same argument, and it hasn’t progressed at all. It is exactly as it was when the play opened and they were teenagers. It’s a haunting and nightmarish idea; perhaps more Alice in Wonderland than Kafka, but it is the situation that exists between these two communities. Dramatic change has happened in the circumstances between these two communities, but zero change has happened in the attitude and dialogue between each other. Very strange.
However, there was one exchange that struck me as insightful, when Mr. Ben-Tovim said that Palestinians get less resources of the Israeli state because they don’t understand the culture of how to apply for it; they don’t know how to speak to westerners to win them over. This caused great offence to Ms Touma-Sliman who then dominated the proceedings for a period to inform the room that, “We are treated like shit!” Mr Ben-Tovim replied that Palestinian parliamentarians in the Knesset call for the destruction of Israel. Ms Touma-Sliman responded by telling us that, “We’re treated like shit!” Was Mr Ben-Tovim trying to tell us that things could change in Israel if the Palestinians simply changed the record? If he was then it’s not the direction that everyone else is going in to pursue a peace deal.
Imagine yourself trying to speak to those two men with their feet cast in concrete. You and I know that the conflict is massively self-destructive, surely it just needs someone to come in from the outside and bang some heads together? Surely this is just an argument about land, so it can be solved if we just mark out who owns what? However, you also know that these two grey-haired old men with their feet cast in concrete have been having the same argument since their youth, without that argument progressing. Is there anything that you could possibly do to change that? And if there’s nothing you can do to change that, then is it the case that the heart of this conflict is not to do with land but to do with dialogue and the lack of any change in the dialogue over the years? If that is the case, then it’s not the direction that everyone else is going in to pursue a peace deal.

Our new editing suit and office is well on the way to nearing completion in the next few weeks. The main construction has now been done and the interior is all that is left to do. A big thank you to everyone who has helped and donated things for our new premises we cannot thank everyone enough for all the help that we have received. With bank accounts more than empty caused by lavish hotel rooms and equal meals to suite any price range of suite, coffee twice a day and a San Francisco bay, travel expenses ate just as well for my three week shoot to China and now in this fall chill, -zero is forecasting the unpaid bill from not yet paid recent jobs will soon eat too. Recently home, I sit on the floor near my cat’s food box, empty, ripping up bread for her to eat, along with me. Neither of us have any money to buy the other anything of editable value so we feast like beggars on the streets of Paris, on a four course meal of the handout sourdough bread from Le’Gagnavalon. The granite rose, charcoal and tan stones that make up my kitchen’s floor help the Français de l’humeur.

I realized today that it could be likely that by chance I will never have a separation between social life and what others have called my passion. And that makes life a bit easier to navigate and I think that is so because instead of dividing which parts of existence go where and more importantly to some, when, everything seems to go together as it fits together. As it fits together, planned by the Hymn.

It is 530 am and simultaneously 5 videos in full 1440×1080 hd push a little blew bar of status as they upload fresh from the export chambers that rest in the depths of a late night fcp edit session. The videos will be seen by Congress week. Mr. Z.P, Genious Esquire was beside me, making my evening as a perfect assistant would, from 8 pm to 520 am helping any way he could. The original Pink Panther film played as the night went on.
5 Videos exported in two resolutions, color toned with audio fixed, all of that done today.
6am. Time for sleep, for just a little while.

Apple acaba de lanzar la actualización 10.6.2 para Snow Leopard, entre varias mejoras cabe destacar la “mejoras generales de fiabilidad en Final Cut Studio”

This is the first of projects for all video editors and audio producers. For this project i thought i’d throw you in at the deep end in which could be a very real world situation. The project has been donated by 21stc Liverpool, who recently asked Sparkle to post produce an edit for a short comedy promo they’ve been working on. Our edit is now complete and the footage has been donated here for editors, colourists and audio people to practice on. This could be a group project but roles would have to be defined very early on. There’s over 4 hours of footage shot on 2 cameras HDV, an edit is required of at least 4 minutes and maximum 7 minutes. The promo must depict the feel of the show, introduce characters and most of all make the viewer want to watch more!! Once complete the edit will need to be colour corrected, audio levels mastered, SFX added and then prepared for out put.

This project is only available for people using Final Cut Pro as its the format we use professionally and the format we can help out with. Theres of 20gb of audio for this project, you’ll need to arrange your own stoarge device then email postproduction@sparklemedia.tv to arrange to pick up a copy. The audio format can be delivered via a send to Soundtrack Pro. The audio can edited in what ever package you see fit but must be delivered back via Soundtrack pro and sync with the timeline. Any other audio will not be excepted.

O que muitos media queriam aconteceu: Paulo Bento demitiu-se

Sim, como muitos já devem saber, o treinador (agora ex-treinador) decidiu abandonar o clube por considerar impossível a sua continuidade.

Digamos que, os meios de comunicação social esperavam, jogo após jogo, que um resultado menos bom (que estavam a ser frequentes) fosse mais uma razão para atacar a torto e a direito o treinador. Foi o caso do jogo de ontem, frente ao Ventspils, em que a equipa empatou a 1 golo.

Foi um GRANDE treinador no Sporting, com os poucos meios que teve, acho que conseguiu fazer muito. Colocou a equipa a jogar bem. Mas, como tudo na vida, esta não é perfeita e foi isso que aconteceu. Começou a correr-lhe mal o trabalho e, aproveitaram as debilidades financeiras/psicológicas da equipa toda para atacar este.

Metam na cabeça: O Sporting NÃO tem equipa de qualidade para lutar com Benfica e Porto!

A equipa tem jogadores de qualidade, mas são jovens, que precisam de tempo para crescer. Não é de um dia para o outro que se constrói uma equipa vencedora. Não deram condições (dinheiro) para este fazer uma equipa vencedora! (mais uma vez, olhem para a equipa do Benfica de 2009)

«Não prometeram nada que não tivessem cumprido. Sabia aquilo que ia encontrar, mas ano após ano as condições eram inferiores. Este ano estava extremamente difícil de o fazer. Tivemos muitas condicionantes. Izmailov desde o início, Polga a partir de um determinado tempo. Hoje, temos também de reconhecer que foi um erro não optar pela continuidade de Derlei», afirmou Paulo Bento, em declarações à TVI.

Treinador mais sério que este em Portugal/Português, acho que nunca vi! Muitos não gostavam dele porque diz sempre o que pensa, sem medo.

O ex-técnico «leonino» lamentou não terem conquistado o campeonato na temporada de 2006/07: «O Sporting em 2006/07 teve duas derrotas, com o Benfica e Paços de Ferreira, golo com a mão. Numa época onde perdemos o campeonato por um ponto.»

Apesar de não gostar o senhor Paulo Sérgio, concordo plenamente. Há poucos como o Paulo Bento. E, tal como referiu, que vai de encontro ao que disse acima, não tinha condições para ganhar!

«Paulo Bento saiu com nobreza, a mesma com que sempre soube estar no clube», afirmou Rogério Alves, que gostaria de ver outro treinador português a dirigir a equipa.

Ele demite-se pelo Sporting e pelos jogadores. Está tudo dito.»

Acho que fica claro, os dirigentes Sportinguistas queriam manter o treinador. Como digo… os media é que fizeram mais uma “vítima”, são peritos nisto!

E tenho a criticar também o nosso “sistema”, o nosso futebol, que é uma vergonha!

É impressionante!

Não são os dirigentes que saem, não são os jogadores que, supostamente, deveriam também levar cortes nos ordenados quando jogam mal… não, é o pobre coitado do treinador!

Em muitos casos, realmente são os treinadores os culpados, mas… aquilo que temos visto em Portugal nos últimos anos (ou, pelo menos, desde que vejo futebol) é uma das drogas do nosso futebol!

Por exemplo, o Vitória de Setúbal já vai com duas trocas este ano!

Chego mesmo a dizer, tal como o próprio Paulo Bento disse uma vez: “mete-me nojo”.

As últimas palavra dele, na sala de imprensa:

«Acabou um ciclo que durou quatro anos que considero que foi positivo, que teve momentos complicados. Faltou a conquista do grande objectivo que era ser campeão nacional. Foram quatro anos positivos, onde conseguimos que o Sporting voltasse a ganhar»

O ambiente que se criou à volta da continuidade levou a que chegássemos a este ponto. Há uma responsabilidade própria de não conseguir que os jogadores se abstraíssem daquilo que os envolvia. Não dotei a equipa com qualidade em termos de jogo e a nossa pontuação na Liga neste momento não ajudou.»

Humildade, acima de tudo!

E, abaixo segue o histórico dele como treinador.

Paulo Bento, 40 anos, chegou ao comando da equipa principal dos leões em 2005/06, na sequência do despedimento de José Peseiro. Bento iniciara a carreira de treinador na época anterior na equipa júnior do Sporting, onde se sagrou campeão nacional.

Como técnico principal, Paulo Bento, que ficou quatro vezes em segundo lugar na Liga, apenas foi superado, em número de partidas, pelo mítico Joseph Szabo (346 jogos). Bento, entre 23 de Outubro de 2005 e 5 de Novembro de 2009, conquistou duas Taças de Portugal e duas Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira.

Realizou 194 jogos, com 117 vitórias, 46 empates e 31 derrotas.

Edit de última hora:

Em 194 jogos oficiais, o agora ex-técnico “leonino”, de 40 anos (nasceu a 20 de Junho de 1969), somou 117 triunfos, 46 empates (23,7 por cento) e 31 derrotas (16,0), com 311 golos marcados e 152 sofridos.

O treinador Paulo Bento concluiu com 60,3 por cento de vitórias o seu trajecto de mais de quatro anos ao comando da equipa de futebol do Sporting.

Como disse, e muito bem, não teve condições para vencer, portanto… era impossível pedir-se mais a este senhor!

Oxalá a mentalidade dos portugueses mude, no que toca a situações como estas… acho que as pessoas precisam de abrir os olhos… o problema não está somente no treinador!

Eu, como Benfiquista que sou, gostava (se não tivéssemos o Jorge Jesus como treinador) de ver o Paulo Bento a treinar a equipa actual dos “encarnados”.

E mais, cheira-me que vamos ver o senhor Paulo Bento a ter títulos lá fora no estrangeiro… e claro, depois vamos engolir com “ossos” e tudo!

Ele não teve condições para vencer. Ponto final!

Lá vai o Porto cantando e rindo rumo à proxima eliminatória, e com mais uns milhões no bolso.

Jesualdo Ferreira tem que se convencer de que tendo em conta a forma como a maioria das equipas se apresentam frente ao campeão nacional, tem que fazer o contrário do que tem feito: começar o jogo em 3 X 4 X 3, em vez do 4 X 3 X 3 habitual, e só depois de marcar o primeiro golo, fazer alterações que acomodem o jogo ou para o 433 habitual, ou caso seja necessário, para um 442 que faça contenção de jogo a meio-campo.

Por outro lado, no jogo contra o Belenenses no estádio do Dragão, foi bem patente a fragilidade do meio-campo através de Beluschi que não provou grande coisa no FCO, e de Sapunaru que transformou o lado direito da defesa num bueiro por onde entrou o golo do Belenenses. Excepto estes dois jogadores, a equipa esteve bem.

Quelques infos complémentaires

Réglages de Photoshop. Avant tout, il faut régler Photoshop pour que le document corresponde au format vidéo avec lequel vous travaillez sur Final Cut : nombre de points,  de lignes, format pixel, codage couleur…

Pour cela, ouvrez un nouveau projet . Fichier/Ouvrir/ Nouveau. Ou Pomme-N

Une fenêtre de réglage s’ouvre. Nommez votre document, puis dans « paramètres définis », allez sur « film et vidéo » et selon votre travail vidéo, ajustez : exemple : HDV 1080, largeur 1440 hauteur 1080 résolution 72 pixels/pouce.

Contenu de l’arrière plan : transparent ( important)

Format des pixel : HDV 1080 dans ce cas. Important si vous êtes en DV-Pal, selon que vous travaillez en 4/3 ou en Pal anamorphosé 16/9 régler bien Pal-DV ou Pal-DV anamorphosé.

Avoir une retour vidéo dans Photoshop. On ne le sait pas assez, mais il est possible d’avoir un monitoring vidéo sur une carte vidéo ou une caméra DV ou HDV via le port Fire-wire. Dans Photoshop, faire : Fichier/exportation/Aperçu Vidéo. Cela permet d’avoir une idée plus que précise de l’export vidéo du document Photoshop avant de l’envoyer dans Final Cut Pro. Attention : au fur et à mesure de l’avancée du travail sur Photoshop, il faut parfois faire un rafraîchissement de cette façon : Fichier/Exportation/Envoyer l’aperçu de la vidéo vers le périphérique.

Télécharger et utiliser une nouvelle police de caractère. Dans le tutorial, j’utilise une police qui s’appelle :  “Eight track program two“. Si vous ne l’avez pas, téléchargez-la ici http://www.abstractfonts.com/font/1857 . Installez-là dans Biliothèque/Fonts.
