Standard Body, FD… Win

The Rx7 makes an ideal track car thanks to Mazda’s extensive motorsport history and the knowledge of the rotary engine by tuning specialists around the country. One of the aforementioned specialists is Anthony Rodriguez who, with his company Maztech of Melbourne, have been quietly screwing together record-breaking rotary engines since the early ninties.

Armed with this knowledge Jason ordered a 13B Bridgeport engine full of  Xtreme Rotaries components and carefully assembled by Anthony at Maztech. He then fitted a  Garret T04Z with a custom top mount intercooler and a custom exhaust.

A pair of  Bosch 044 custom surge tank, 6 x 1700 cc Indy blue injectors, all setup with a Microtech ECU for E85. The gearbox is a  6 speed Mal Wood TR6060 Tremac with custom bellhousing close ratio box with short shifter,  a Direct Clutch Services twin plate clutch and the diff is a RE Amemiya 4.77 ratio. the suspensionconsists of big dollar Ohlins external reservoir coil overs, racing beat swaybars fr/rr, superpro bushes throughout, Samberg diff cradle, ppf removed.

The brakes are AP Racing 6 piston front brakes, with Project MU Club Racer pads allround. The wheels are  SSR Type C. with Yokohama 265 x 18” A050 Semis. Bodyform  and FEED made the wide body kit with custom made fr splitter and canards. And finally a full custom FIA rollcage made by LF Performance in Perth. The aero design is thanks to Scott Beeton from Aerodesigns.

Trent has been very successful over the past 12 months with the team claiming victory the Open Class of the South Australian state time attack championships, an outright RWD victory in the Mt Alma Hill Climb and a second in class at the Mount Gambier Hill climb. They will certainly be looking to continue their winning ways at Eastern Creek and the development has continued in earnest in the lead up to WTAC.

The RX7 features a healthy 13B turbo engine built by Jason at REVs backed by an OS Giken gearbox and a Mazdaspeed 2 way diff. The turbocharger was spec’d and supplied by Wayne at Sonic Performance and is now a new Garrett GT25/102 GTRX.

The intercooler and radiator is now V mounted by Trent at Wild RX motorsport who also built a flat floor and the ECU is now a top line MoTec M800 fitted and tuned by Simon Podlewski at Morpowa. The bodykit is a Savanna and the suspension setup is by Brandon Scammell.

The full rollcage was built by Simon Saunders at Simonbuilt and a 3 1/2 inch exhaust by Mark at Exhaust Technology. The big Enkei rims are wrapped in soft Kumho 305/30/18 tyres and the trick graphics are by Infinity signs over paint by A1 Truck and Car  Crash Repairs at Woodville North, Adelaide.

After finishing seventh in Open Class at WTAC 2011 despite mechanical dramas, and now with another year of development behind him and  the support of the highly experienced Morpowa team Brad will be one of the hot favourites for the Open Class honours.

The car is still sporting the REVS built bridgeport engine with a Garrett GT40 turbocharger and making “more power than ever”.

A Haltech PS1000 ECU  controls the air, fuel and lights the fire with a Racepak Dash enabling the team to log every lap and analyse the data. Other changes for this year include a “Burnout” front bar with a Custom splitter and rear wing designed by aero ace Andrew Brilliant to provide maximum downforce. An Albins strightcut dog box feeds to a Kaaz 1.5 way diff and the widebody kit is from Bodyform.

Making it stop and turn is a set of mega dollar Swedish Ohlins coilovers, a pair of CSC brakes on the front and AP Racing on the rear. The whole lot sits on a set of Enkei NT03 wheels and naturally the tyres are Hankook Ventus Z221 with Brad actually involved in much of the feedback to Hankook Australia.

It would appear that Brad has been giving them all the right feedback in the past 12 months winning 2 rounds of the RENEW championship and round 3 of the All Japan Battle at Eastern Creek. He was also 2nd outright at the Mt Alma Mile on road legal tyres and 2nd outright in Pro Class in the South Australian Time Attack Championships.

Morpowa Auto & Dyno cater for all types of vehicles. The performance side of morpowa cover everything from Pro Off road Buggys to record smashing time attack cars. Morpowa currently hold the lap record for mallala with the only 2 car in the 10s on R tyres. Morpowa offer track support and race preparation for race vehicles.

Morpowa Auto & Dyno have numerous achievements:
Currently the only cars to run into the 10s on R tyres around Mallala. Morpowa Nissan 2J180 second in class at WTAC 2011, fastsest  RWD, fastest 6 cyld, fastest rotary. Mt Alma fastest RWD record. Legend of the Lakes fastest RWD record. Australia’s fastest Lancer on street tyres in 2005 9.45 147mph. .

One thing is for certain and that is that is that these guys are no strangers to the rotary engine or professional level motor racing. RE Amemiya is a Chiba based tuning company founded by Isami Amemiya in 1974 and still running to this day under his direction. This team have competed in Japanese Super GT for many years starting in 1995 as the sole rotary engine participant with a 20B powered RX7 and culminating in 2006 when they won the Japanese Super GT300 Championship.

They have also competed in D1 Grand Prix for many years in rotary powered vehicles and often feature on the podium. Many RE Amemiya cars have featured prominently on video games throughout the years including Gran Turismo 4 and 5.

The blue “Hurricane” RX7 is currently undergoing the transformation from “showstopper” to “record breaker” in the lead up to WTAC 2012. The car will be powered by a 20B turbocharged engine that will make “around” 700 horsepower and no doubt will draw on this teams years of experience in Super GT racing. They have told us they will be replacing many parts from their Super GT car onto this vehicle to bring it to race specification although they did tell us the car, in true “tuner car tradition” will retain much of the original chassis unlike their arch rivals in the Revolution RX7, who we may add are good mates off the track.

Whilst they have not confirmed who will be driving for them yet you can rest assured that it will be level A driver probably someone from Japanese Super GT. The team will be supported by Yokohama Japan and will run on the new soft 295 Advan AO50 tyres. “We are honoured to accept the invitation to compete in World Time Attack in Australia” said Amemiya-san from his workshop “we have competed in, and been successful in most other forms of motorsport before but we have never really competed in professional level time attack racing so this is a new challenge”

One thing you can be assured of and that is that this team will not be coming all this way to mess about. When you have the resources of a professional level race team you are normally able to ”hit the ground running” as we have seen in the past with ex Formula Atlantic team Sierra Sierra. The quality of the build really has to be seen to be believed and when we asked what areas they will be improving before WTAC they replied “Many areas, but mainly aero, weight and vehicle dynamics”…

We will keep you up to date with the progress of the blue “Hurricane RX7” on here in the coming months but it is just so awesome to have another huge name that many thought they would only dream of seeing race in their lifetime coming to race in our country in the not too distant future, and we are pretty sure these guys are coming here to win too. We will now have to wait and see if Revolution will be back because we can only imagine how cool it would be seeing these teams go head to head!

500whp bridge-ported, fire breathing rotary monster!

The weather here has been pretty terrible, the downside of this being work is very slow so money isn’t good. The upside is that the roads are wet! I have been going out regularly and have come to the conclusion that my car doesn’t handle very well in the rain. Most likely due to cut springs, alignment out of whack, and shit tyres up front, but still fun! After all, the current set up is just temporary.

Early 2012 DM Motorsport bought a mint Silver 1997 RS with suspected tip failure, body work is mint & standard including the 17″ stock wheels covering the larger RS/RZ brake setup.

Engine was tested and revealed the front rotor had spat out a seal so its was time to  disassembled. Luckily we have a spare engine which was removed from our drift car project which is on hold currently.  The Engine was compression tested recently to reveal a very healthy state with 8.4 average on the front and 8.2 average on the rear rotor. A great tribute to the engine building skills of Steve Rivett who built this engine for Dale  back in 2008 using 2nd hand parts.

The plan for the car is quite simple, make it powerful and keep it looking true to its original design. Any additions to be genuine parts (non china) where possible and keep the noise to a minimum.

Turbo choice will be a set of GT28R cores shoehorned into the original turbo pack running sequentially , a fair amount of machining work is needed so Danny is on the case. Each turbo is capable of producing 350bhp so our aims are very high with these units. Being full ball bearing units they should be spooling pretty early on with the mild street ported engine. We are hoping to run these to as close to 1.5 bar as possible, our prototype set are currently running this pressure over in South Africa with great results.

Onto the rest of the engine systems,

Cooling:
Will be using a custom V-Mount system. Radiator will be a custom made unit to fit exactly between the main chassis beams, core will most likely be a radtec unit. Intercooler is still be decided as we can’t decide if 3″ thickness is large enough for this application so will be speaking to the tuner for advice. Water/methanol injection is most likely going to be used to keep charge temps down and also allow for the higher boost we plan to run.

Ignition:
Ignition will be supplied by MSD using their digital 6AL2 unit with individual coils for each spark plug, but still retaining the wasted spark leading spark system. Coils will be located where the DM relocation plate sits.

Exhaust:
Exhaust will be a complete FEED system comprising of 3″ downpipe, large silenced mid pipe and back-box. Hoping for a nice flowing and relatively quiet system. The system will be completely wrap in magma tech wrap to keep heat temps low in the engine bay and retain heat within the exhaust for better flow.

Drivetrain & Suspension:
Clutch will be a Hyper D Carbon twin plate clutch from Exedy, trying to make this car as road friendly as possible so having a light clutch that can handle some serious power is ideal. Gearbox is a rebuilt stock unit which has the gear assembly cryo treated before reassembly, hopefully making it as reliable as possible. we will continue to use the stock 17″ wheels and RS brake system. Suspension will stock for the moment, this car is to be used as a cruiser and will rarely see track work.

Intake & Fueling:
Cosmo 13B-RE Upper and lower inlet manifolds, ported to match housings. Injectors will be Primary Injector Dynamics ID1000 and Secondary ID2000 x 2. Bosch 040 lift pump to 1ltr under car swirl pot and Bosch 044 mounted under car also. AN6 Braided fuel lines. Fuelab fuel pressure reg.

Bodywork:
For the moment it will be running a Pre 99 front bumper with stock splitter colour coded to the car (unless a genuine silver 99spec front comes available)., Feed sidesteps and a RE-A splitter both in FRP, hopefully we will be getting some carbon vortex generators and centre fins made.

So the current state of the car is the engine is ready for the flywheel clutch assembly to be fitted. Once this is done the rebuilt box will be fitted. Dan will hopefully be finishing the turbo pack late next week From that point it will be a case of measuring the additional pipework for oil and water for the new turbo pack and also see what is needed for the y-pipe to fit correctly. What we know is the pack will widen slightly so we need to asses if the stock Y-pipe assembly is suitable.
