When Roland Allen was 17 he faced a choice most young men dream about – accept an offer to play hockey or pursue his passion for Rock & Roll. He chose the money and played hockey in Switzerland for 8 years before returning to his extensive guitar collection and developing his all ready versatile voice. His passion for all music is apparent. Roland is always ready to learn more and spends countless hours writing new material and learning from other musicians.

His playlist is inspired by and includes a selection from Jimmy Buffet to Billy Idol, from R.E.M. to Led Zeppelin and around to Toby Keith. He is recently following The Black Keys and Wolf Mother. Roland’s voice has incredible range and he has a special ability to add instant energy to a room. He truly loves to perform and has a deep appreciation to those who support him. His is best known locally as the fellow who encourages the whole room to join him in his signature song “What’s Up?”.

Michael Musclow is our opening act at the 2012 Gala Event. We look forward to hearing some of this Indy musician’s eclectic sounds. Here is more about him:

Michael’s complex and often misunderstood relationship with music began on his 12th birthday when he received his first guitar. From the moment he first plucked that low E string and used his fingers to move across the fret board he realized that he had stumbled onto the correct vessel to express himself. In the ensuing school years Michael received musical achievement awards, enrolled in various music courses, taught himself piano and absorbed any knowledge he could in the field of audio engineering with the intention to release multiple albums serving as artistic reflections of his experiences.

One year after graduation this vision began to see the light of day when his first album “Rotted Nebula” was released in November of 2004. In the years that have followed, Michael has solidified his musical philosophies of consistent improvement and experimentation in all aspects of composition, performance & album production. Seven years, six albums, countless public performances and three BC Indie Music Award nominations later since that fateful November in 2004, he shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. After visiting Hawaii and picking up a ukulele, he has added new and magical ‘uke’ songs to his repertoire.

Michael is currently working on a new album due out December 21st 2012, titled “Under Blankets and Black Skies.”

Discography

** Jointly nominated for the BC Indie Music Awards Instrumental Recording of the Year category in 2011.

*** “A.G.O.O.I.A” is Michael’s first compilation release stringing together material from his first seven albums. A sonic journey of emotional variety will surely ensue to listeners of this 26 song, genre twisting collection.

Bob was born in Saskatoo0n, Saskatchewan, but has lived all across Canada since leaving there in 1971. Bob first visited Penticton in 1999, and fell in love with the city, because of the climate, natural surroundings, small town atmosphere and the people . Feeling the ‘artistic’ atmosphere drawing him back, he decided to move here in 2005.

Bob picked up a guitar at the age 16 and never looked back. He was mostly influenced by James Taylor and Cat Stevens. He incorporated their ‘style’ of guitar playing into his own, mixing classical finger picking, rhythm, bass, and lead all into one. Bob is a multi-dimensional musician, playing: Banjo, Keyboards, Mandolin, Congas and other rhythm instruments.

As for his sound…soft rock, easy listening, country and rock are always included in the ‘set lists’. James Taylor, Keith Urban, Moody Blues, Kenny Rogers, George Strait, Luke Bryan, Jimmy Wayne, Jimmy Buffet, Eric Clapton, Burton Cummings, Savage Garden, are just some of the artists he covers. Bob offers musical selections spanning six decades, playing songs from the 50′s up to the present.

Bob is always willing to ‘hook up’ with other musicians for jam sessions and/or gigs, and is available for smaller venue performances. Bob also has a Studio Recorded Disc, containing 10 originals, but has written more than two dozen songs and still counting.

Bob can be contacted by:

One of our musicians for the Giving Others A Boost Gala Event are The Corner Turtles. They were a hit at our last event at Heaven’s Gate Winery!

Dan and Stef met at Rhodes Wellness College early in 2004 where they were each beginning a new segment of life. Dan had just bought an electric guitar and was reconnecting with an old love for making music that had been put aside for close to 40 years. Stef had been singing and playing her guitar for about 30 years but was terrified to sing publicly or even let anyone but her kids hear her play. After they both graduated in 2005 they decided to get together and make some music together. Although Stef lacked confidence in her musical abilities Dan believed in her and as they were connecting musically they each realized the special connection they had with each other as a couple was a much bigger song.

To get Stef out of her shell Dan took her to a secluded beach where with 2 battery operated amps , one for his guitar and one for her microphone with only the sea and the sky of infinite possibilities listening. Stef busted out and sang from a new place of confidence. It was shortly after this that the two entertained the idea of being public about their music and being a duet.
People often ask how they came to be called The Corner Turtles. The story is sweet and simple. Dans’ young grandchildren had come for a visit and brought a gift that they had made. The gift was about 8 God’s Eyes which were each made by crossing 2 Popsicle sticks and then wrapping them with colorful yarn. One of them was made with 3 sticks and it looked like a turtle. As they enjoyed their gift one of them commented that the turtle Gods Eye looked as if it was going around a corner and the other remarked back, “The Corner Turtles, that would be a great name for a band”. It stuck and although they are not a band, they are an energetic, and passionate duet who love to make music and entertain.
After moving to Keremeos in 2006, The Corner Turtles stepped out and started playing classics and original music, in restaurants, pubs, at private parties and this is the fifth year that they will be the morning music, at the ever so fun, pancake breakfasts, on Canada Day in July and Sizzlefest in September. So come to the next Giving Others A Boost Showcase Event at Heaven’s Gate Winery on July 31st between 5 & 7:30 and check out this band!

Giving Others A Boost enjoys offering music at its events, so we are excited to announce the feature

Giving Others A Boost enjoys offering music at its events, so we are excited to announce the featured musician for the May 29th Showcase Event is Aaron Gordon. This is one nurse who knows buzz isn’t just a way for patients to get a hold of him. Aaron Gordon has made his presence known in the Okanagan music scene and is pushing ever harder for each new stepping stone on the way to eminent success. His drive and enthusiasm comes through in his writing creating a positive listening experience for any true fan of music.

The Canadian-based pop/rock singer/songwriter has honed his craft to forge a unique blend of adult contemporary pop that runs the musical gamut from poignant and heartfelt ballads to hilarious, energetic and uplifting tunes. Not to mention occasionally kicking it up a notch and hitting that distortion petal to get the party rolling!

Raised on classic and modern rock with a splash of country and blues, Aaron gravitated towards playing drums, learning guitar and writing his first songs at age 12. His musical tastes branched out in his teen years to include more edgy stuff like Dubstep and Metal, but his true creative outlet would prove to be much softer and more intimate.

Aaron has played in a couple of regional bands but says he’s played tons of open mic nights and solo acoustic performances which is where he hit on his signature sound. Today he performs both cover and original material with a band of four across BC playing such events such as Pop Okanagan, The Interior Provincial Exhibition, and countless fundraisers. Aaron recently released his first EP entitled “Moving On” produced by Ange Alero and is working on the music for the 3rd EP with the 2nd ready to record.

I love this lady! I found her music on SoundCloud a week or so ago and fell for it right away. There is a song on her account there called “Pedaling” that is so great. It feels as though you are actually riding around town on the front handle bars of someone’s bike. And I loved that she took something like a bike ride and took it somewhere deeper. One of my favorite things to discover in someone’s music or artwork is the transformation of something from mundane to meaningful and she does this very often and very well in her songs. Her sound, to me, is reminiscent of somewhere between that of Adele and Amy Whinehouse’s, but what makes hers different is that she paints her songs with a palette of colors that is a few shades brighter. Please give her a listen…or two…or three:). Find her on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/CammyEnaharoMusic
or on soundcloud (where you can find the “Pedaling” song mentioned above) at http://soundcloud.com/cammy-enaharo. Like her, follow her, leave a comment….show your love! Good luck to you Cammy! It is a shame that music like yours is nowhere to be found in mainstream media outlets….yet:)

Dr Eclectic is pleased to perform at the Giving Others a Boost event at The Fresh Healthy Café on March 27th. This performance will be during the same month he releases his first CD.

Retired OUC Regional Dean Dr Allan Markin is no stranger to Penticton. Now he has re-invented himself as singer/songwriter “Dr Eclectic,” returning to his love of music and the stage. In the 1960s he was a well-known rock & roll singer with several bands, including The Invaders and The New Versatiles. His musical theatre experience includes playing Mr Mushnik in Little Shop of Horrors and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof.

The CD will be released in late-March.

Dr Eclectic’s recent performances include Penticton Peach Fest (with Umbrage), Fibonacci’s (with Umbrage), Nanaimo Square, Whatshan Lake Music Festival, Okanagan Falls Wild West Fest, Kyle Anderson’s Thursday Night Showcase, as well as several fundraising and private functions.

Jeff Bjorck

Jeff’s website: http://purepiano.com

As an artist, Jeff Bjorck believes music in its purest form is sometimes the closest thing to art. Not surprisingly, his solo acoustic piano compositions paint a gallery of musical images suitable for framing. These original works interweave delicacy with intensity, combine musical notes with the space between them, and create moving pictures that move the emotions. Dr. Bjorck is somewhat of an expert on emotions. As a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor at Fuller Seminary’s Graduate School of Psychology, his multifaceted vocation typifies his ongoing passion for a Renaissance man’s approach to life.

Jeff’s nontraditional method of composition has remained basically the same during the past thirty years. He sits at the piano, plays spontaneously from the heart, and stops to develop any musical themes that surprise him. He confesses, “Sometimes I feel like a third party, listening to the whole process as an interested observer!”

To Jeff, nature embodies God’s ultimate artistic creativity, and it is frequently the subject of his portraits. Born to two artists, he began creating music when he was ten years old. He also loves composing through the media of photography, illustration, painting, and poetry.

In addition to original compositions, Jeff includes original arrangements of traditional hymns on his CDs. He remarks, “My faith and relationship with Jesus Christ provide vision and give my life its meaning. My creativity merely imitates the Creator.” He describes his compositions as “quiet music to calm the heart in a noisy world.” Listeners apparently agree. His music has provided reassuring focus for mothers in delivery, peaceful rest when insomnia comes knocking, and elegant ambiance at intimate wedding receptions and dinner parties. Jeff also donates his music to Pediatric psychology staff at City of Hope Hospital, who use his CDs as part of their approach to stress management with pediatric cancer patients and their families. He remarks, “It is my hope that I can bring all my listeners emotional music with a classical feel that lifts them from the rat race and gently sets them down in a restful place, as far away from everyday chaos as possible.”

Johannes’ website: http://johanneslinstead.com

If you haven’t ever listened to Johannes Linstead now is a good time to check out his music. It’s amazing acoustic guitar.

From being named “Guitarist of the Year” in the 2007 Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, to winning three “best album” awards, to four top-ten charting albums, to top-ten radio airplay, Johannes Linstead has become recognized internationally as one of best selling guitarist/composers in the Instrumental and World Music genres. Johannes let’s loose a fiesta of Spanish guitar magic!

Johannes Linstead, one of Canada’s top guitarists, earned a nomination for the nation’s top music prize, a JUNO Award in the “Instrumental Album Of The Year” category, for his CD CAFÉ TROPICAL. The JUNOs are Canada’s equivalent of a Grammy. This album also reached the #1 position on eMusic.com World Music Chart within the first week of its’ release, and reached the #4 position on the coveted Billboard music charts in the US. MEDITERRANEA (Sept. 2004) shot straight to the Top Ten and reached the #6 position and was named “Best World Album” in the NAR Lifestyle Music Awards. All of Johannes’ CD have charted on Billboard and are available around the world.

Johannes’ live performances are nothing short of phenomenal. Bursting with tropical sounds, audiences are moved to dance and clap along to his music. In concert, as on his recordings, Johannes strives to create a festive mood, leaving plenty of room for lightning fast guitar improvisations and spicy percussion solos, which include bongos, congas, timbale and doumbek. Lively Latin and Mediterranean rhythms combined with Johannes’ technical virtuosity leave audiences breathless.

A hugely talented multi-instrumentalist, Johannes plays guitar, piano, mandolin, bouzouki, bass, wood flute and various percussion. On his recordings he is backed by world-class musicians from countries as diverse as Cuba, Columbia, Syria, Greece, Mexico, Russia, Venezuela, the Ukraine and India.

Influenced deeply by the journeys he experienced as a youth, Johannes states: “The integration of the many cultures I have experienced, from Spain, to the Caribbean Islands, to Latin America, have moved me to create new rhythms and sounds. Experiencing these cultures – not just the music but also the people’s everyday triumph over adversity – is what inspires my music.”
