Davydenko wins!

I wish I was there to witness it.  Nikolay Davykendo, one of the best players on tour without a Grand Slam, took out the last big event of the tennis calendar, ATP World Tour Finals, by defeating US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro in the final, 6-3, 6-4.

When the tournament began, few gave the No. 7 (out of 8 men in the draw) a chance, and he stumbled out of the gates, losing to Novak Djokovic in his opening round robin match.  However, he managed to regroup and defeat Aussie Open winner Rafael Nadal and French Open finalist Robin Soderling to advance to the semi-finals.  There, he finally beat French Open, Wimbledon winner and World No. 1 Roger Federer for the first time ever (in 13 career meetings).

So congrats to Davydenko, one of those underrated guys who plays consistently well but never seems to be able to pull out the big games against the top players.  That said, he had actually won all 5 of his championship matches in 2009, the last (before this one) coming at the Shanghai Masters, which he needed to qualify for the end of year tournament.

Did Federer tank his match against Del Potro?

I’d just to take a step back for a moment back to the round robin section of the tournament to talk about Roger Federer (who finished the year ranked no. 1).

The ATP World Tour Finals has a strange (not not overly complex) system where the top 8 players are split into Group A and Group B, with the top 2 from each group advancing to the semi-finals.  As each player has 3 matches in the round robin, it is not uncommon for players to end up with identical win-loss records.  Where there are 3 players with identical records (as was the case this year in both Groups A and B), the tie-breaker provides that the 2 players with the highest percentage of sets won will advance.  If that does not resolve things, then it’s the top 2 with the highest percentage of games won.

In his final round robin match, Federer lost to Del Potro 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3.  This meant Federer, Del Potro and Murray all finished with a record of 2-1 in the round robin round.  All three men also had identical set records of 5-4.  This meant that the tie-break came down to the percentage of games won.  Federer ensured he would go through by winning 44 from 80 games (55%), thanks in part to a couple of 6-1 sets in his wins against Verdasco and Murray.  Del Potro, the other man to make it through, won 45 out of 88 games (51.1%), knocking out Andy Murray, who had won 44 out of 87 games (50.6%).  If Federer had taken just 1 more game against Del Potro, Andy Murray would have been the one to make it through instead.  Just 1 game!

Though the conspiracy chatter has been relatively subdued (and mostly in jest), there are those who believe Federer tanked the last 3 games of his match against Del Potro in order to knock Andy Murray out of the tournament.

In the final set, with the score tied 3-3, Federer fell apart, losing 3 straight to end the match.  However, it was the way Federer lost those games that began raising eyebrows.  As a furious friend told me after the match in an email entitled “Federer is a disgrace”:

“I watched the entire match, and he played entirely different in the last 3 games.  He double faulted, charged the net kamikaze style (ala Andy Roddick) and got passed, dumped return of serves into the net…I don’t understand why he did it but he is not a sportsman.  So upset by this!“

I admit, it does sound a little far-fetched that Federer would do this, and even more far-fetched that he could purposely lose in a way that would knock Andy Murray out.  Nevertheless, the way in which Federer played to end the match is highly uncharacteristic, especially the way he botched his service game when down 3-4 in the final set to hand the match to Del Potro on a platter.

It is probable that before the match Federer and his team would have done some calculations to see what he and the other players in his group needed to advance (and remember that Murray’s game finished first).  Federer admitted that he knew he had to win the second set or else he would be knocked out (which explains his celebratory fist pumps after winning it 7-6). As he said himself:

“I knew I couldn’t lose in two sets because I knew that was going to knock me out.  That’s why I was very excited.”

However, if Federer did indeed make such calculations, then he must have also known that even a 0-6 third set would not have stopped him from advancing to the semi-finals.

Federer’s post-match words are somewhat telling:

“I asked Juan Martin myself at the net, ‘Did you make it or not?’  He said, ‘I don’t think so.’ … Of course, you got to feel sorry for the guy who didn’t make it.  At the same time, Del Potro beat the No. 1 player in the world in the group, and I guess also deserves to go through.  There’s only two places, and that’s the way it is.”

Notice how Federer had only questioned whether Del Potro had made it – which means he had no doubt that he had already made it through himself (ie confirms calculations were made).  And notice how he suggested that Del Potro deserves to go through (instead of Murray) because Juan Martin had beaten the ‘No. 1 player in the world’ (ie himself).  Maybe it’s just my imagination (and it’s not the image of Roger I want to have), but it’s not out of the realm of possibility, is it?

If Federer did indeed attempt to tank his match against Del Potro, even just a little, then I suppose you could say karma struck back.  With 12 straight victories against Davydenko, you could be forgiven for thinking the match was in the bag.  Who would have thought Davydenko would finally get him on try number lucky 13?

Llegó el último partido del año, y los protagonistas de esta final son un poco inesperados… Davydenko quien le ganó al No. 1 Roger Federer y Juan Martín del Potro, quién hizo lo mismo con Robin Soderling.

Será una final muy pareja, en sus encuentros pasados Davydenko tiene la ventaja de 2-1 y estos dos partidos fueron en la misma superficie, además de que ha sorprendido por lo bien que ha jugado. Del Potro tendrá que ser consistente y paciente para aguantar el estilo de juego de su rival, mientras que Davydenko tendrá que mantener su ritmo de juego para desesperar al rival.

Hoy en el primer turno jugaron Federer y Davydenko en un partido muy peleado que termino ganando el robot ruso, Federer parece que no está en su mejor nivel y esperemos que vuelva a sus mejores momentos. Después venía el partido más esperado, Del Potro-Soderling, el primer set fue muy peleado, delpo no aprovechó las oportunidades de break que tuvo y Soderling lo ganó en el tiebreak, en el segundo set  la torre de tandil puedo quebrar y se adjudicó el set por 6-3. El tercer set arrancó parejo y Soderling quebró  y se puso 4-2, el partido parecía muy difícil porque delpo estaba bastante cansado, pero quebró , se pusieron 4-4 y fueron al tiebreak en donde el tandilense ganó por 7-3 sin mayores dificultades. Mañana va contra Davydenko a las 11 30 de Argentina. VAMOS DELPO CARAJO!

Ce fut un samedi noir pour beaucoup de monde hier. Je pense d’abord à Federer qui n’ira pas en finale des Masters à cause de sa défaite contre Davydenko. Je pense ensuite aux rugbymen Français qui garderont sans doute un bel œil au beurre noir de leur match contre les all-blacks.

Et je pense particulièrement à Gregory Coupet qui a prouvé aux spectateurs du Parc des Princes qu’on pouvait se casser la jambe ailleurs que sur une piste de ski. (ci-dessous Gregory Coupet en plein en train d’avoir mal)

Un petit peu d’histoire est nécessaire à la bonne compréhension du drame qui s’est joué ce soir Porte de St Cloud.

Gregory Coupet (“Greg”) est un gardien de but qu’on peut qualifier de “sérieux”.

Formé à St Étienne, il trompe les Verts en rejoignant les Lyonnais à qui il restera fidèle pendant 12 ans. Il devient le gardien historique des 7 titres consécutifs de l’OL. En 2008 il décide de partir à Madrid. L’aventure tournera court : il joue peu et souhaite finir sa carrière sur un terrain comme Molière avait fini la sienne sur les planches. Quand beaucoup choisissent une retraite dorée aux Émirats ou la tranquillité princière de Monaco, Coupet fait le pari risqué de rejoindre un club situé dans une ZEP : le PSG.

Comme à son habitude le club déçoit mais Coupet réalise une première partie de championnat solide et sans histoire. Jusqu’à ce soir où il s’est fait mal tout seul à seulement une dizaine de minutes de la fin du match. Déjà victime d’une grave blessure au genou en 2007 dont il avait su se relever, il aura à 37 ans du mal à revenir au plus haut niveau suite à cet épisode douloureux.

Personnellement je ne suis pas un habitué de ce genre de choses. Je veux dire, en général, quand les clients débarquent à l’hôpital, le mal est souvent fait. Mon boulot c’est de réparer, pas d’être le témoin de l’accident. Je n’aime pas être en amont. Je me sens inutile. Je suis moi même sorti un peu choqué de cette blessure aussi violente qu’anodine. Ça s’est vu tout de suite qu’il avait l’air d’avoir mal. A la fin du match, Sylvain Armand s’est senti obligé de rajouter à l’horreur :

J’étais proche de l’action, j’ai vu l’os sortir sous la chaussette.

Moi tout ce que j’ai constaté dans cette affaire, c’est qu’un homme est toujours seul face à la douleur.

Revenons sur l’action : Gregory Coupet s’écroule. S’il reste digne, son rictus ne trompe pas : la blessure doit être sévère.

La position de son pied et la forme sinusoïdale de son tibia laissent effectivement craindre le pire.

Claude Makélélé, visiblement concerné, vient s’informer de la situation.

Il fait clairement la démonstration de son soutien en tenant la main et l’épaule de son coéquipier.

Néanmoins comme une mère se tenant à distance de son enfant atteint du virus de la grippe A, il reste très clairement en retrait.

Peut-être ne s’agit-il que de superstition… Il n’en reste pas moins que cette photo me dit que c’est chacun sa merde. Et Jérémy Clément plus soucieux de fêter son but que de jouer les ambulanciers, de déclarer après la partie:

Je pense que Greg reviendra vite. On m’a dit qu’il était presque souriant en partant.

Certain(e)s me diront que je parle trop de sport. J’accuse réception de ce reproche. Mais je pense parler ici de la solitude d’un homme vers qui vont toutes mes pensées ce soir. Une solitude que je partage puisque ce fut également un samedi noir pour moi qui n’ait  pourtant rien à voir avec le foot.

Je rappelle que ça fait déjà deux semaines que j’ai été (lâchement) abandonné par ma femme.

Trotzdem waren die Fans von Federer – und auch Federer selbst – im Halbfinale des ATP Word Tour Finalseher entspannt und optimistisch, das Spiel für sich entscheiden zu können. Das Entsetzen und Verzweifeln wurde erst deutlich, als die Federer Fans – die in der Tat in der Mehrzahl waren – bei jedem Punkt, den Federer für sich entschied, so zu applaudieren und zu schreien, als hätte er bereits den Matchball hinter sich gebracht. Aber der unscheinbare Russe, bei dem ich jedesmal das Gefühl habe, er würde neben dem Tennis spielen auch gleichzeitig meditieren, hat endlich gezeigt, dass er nicht nur konstant gut spielen kann, sondern auch das Selbstvertrauen hat, sich nicht einschüchtern zu lassen.

Überrascht war sicherlich auch Djokovic, der sich das vorherige Match Davydenko gegen Söderling verfolgte, mit der Hoffnung – oder evtl. auch Zuversicht – dass Söderling die Oberhand gewinnen würde und somit für Djoko noch ein Platz in der Tabelle sein würde. Dumm gelaufen!

Fazit: Bellende Hunde beißen nicht (immer) und stille Wasser sind (nicht immer, aber immer öfter) tief!

Il bat Roger Federer – enfin – après douze défaites contre le Suisse en autant de matches et va en finale du Masters. C’est tellement beau pour le Russe, tellement fort, qu’il ne lève même pas les bras à l’issue de la balle de match.

Il faut dire qu’il revient de loin Nikolaï Davydenko. Parce qu’en terme de pari, il sait de quoi il parle. En 2007, à Sopot (en Pologne), sa réputation en avait pris un sacré coup. Il avait abandonné en arguant une blessure au pied contre l’obscur Argentin Arguello (87e mondial. Davydenko 4e) après avoir gagné la première manche. Juste après qu’une somme de cinq millions d’euros (dix fois plus que les montants habituellement engagés sur un tel match sur internet) a été misée sur le web quelques minutes auparavant… en faveur d’Arguello ! De quoi éveiller les soupçons… et notamment de la société de paris en ligne (Betfair, en français “parier régulièrement !) qui avait pour la seule fois de son existence refusé de régler ceux qui avaient misé sur le vainqueur de ce match.

Davydenko, après de nombreux rebondissements et des tonnes de commentaires* le plus souvent défavorables dans la presse et par ses collègues sur sa personne (il a souvent sinon balancé des matches, du moins mis le minimum de volonté à les jouer à fond), a été blanchi par l’ATP en 2008.

Aujourd’hui, face au numéro un mondial, il a au moins montré qu’il voulait se battre sur un court avec la dernière énergie . On parie qu’il n’abandonnera pas en finale ?

*McEnroe avait évoqué la possibilité (dans une interview au Daily Telegraph) de la présence menaçante de la mafia russe dans ces histoires de paris truqués.

Djokovic tentou, mas não foi desta vez, o sérvio aproveitou o mau momento do número 2 do mundo para vencer a partida por 2 sets a 0, com parciais de 7/6 (7/5) e 6/3, em 1h56 de jogo. Nadal chegou a receber atendimento em quadra. Com isso o capitão da Espanha na copa Davis está preocupado com a situação física de Nadal.

Na última partida do dia, tivemos a definição da última vaga e  ainda vimos Soderling, perder a primeira partida por 2 sets a 1, parciais de 7/6 (7/4), 4/6 e 6/3, em 2h04.

Desta vez no fundo de quadra Davydenko foi melhor, muito mais sólido nos seus golpes do que seu adversário o Sueco Soderling.

La temporada de tenis llega a su fin con este torneo en el cual se juntan los mejores 8 jugadores del año, los cuales se dividen en 2 grupos de 4 y entre estos salen los mejores 2 de cada grupo para jugar las semifinales.

Este año después de una clasificación complicada llegan a las semifinales Roger Federer quien jugará contra Nikolay Davydenko en la primera semifinal, mientras que en la 2a Juan Martín del Potro lo hará contra Robin Soderling.

Por la manera en que se clasificaron será hacer una difícil hacer una buena predicción.

ROGER FEDERER vs NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO

Federer tiene una ventaja de 12 partidos ganados contra 0, pero Davydenko dió la sorpresa ganándole a Novak Djokovic, quien había tenido la mejor temporada en canchas techadas, dependerá de la manera en que Federer entre a la cancha y mantenga la consistencia en sus primeros servicios.

ROBIN SODERLING vs JUAN MARTÍN DEL POTRO

Esta semifinal en cuanto a números se ve mucho mas nivelada, ya que cada uno ha ganado un partido cuando se enfrentaron. Soderling llega con mucha confianza habiéndole  ganado a Nadal y Djokovic. Mientras que Del Potro le ganó a Federer pero fue muy inconsistente en sus demás encuentros.

Ayer a las 11 se enfrentaron Murray y Verdasco, y el partido lo ganó el escocés en el tiebreak del tercer set. A las 17 30 se enfrentaron Del Potro y Roger Federer y para pasar , Del Potro tenía que ganar en sets corridos o ganar en 3 y sacar una diferencia de games que deje afuera a Murray. El primer set lo ganó muy fácil delpo por 6-2 y parecía que lo mataba a Roger pero en el segundo fueron al tiebreak y ganó Federer. En el tercero Del Potro tenía que ganar de tal manera que Federer no le gane más de 3 games. El partido estaba 4-3 sacando Federer y Del Potro necesitaba quebrar y mantener su saque, parecía muy díficil y ya casi estaba eliminado del torneo, pero increíblemente delpo le quebró el saque al suizo y mantuvo su saque en un torneo que parecía perdido. Y lo mejor de todo esto es que clasificaron Del Potro y Roger y se quedó afuera el forro de Murray. Mañana se juegan las semis, Del Potro jugará con el primero del grupo B que se está definiendo ahora ya que están jugando Soderling y Davydenko.

Not a happy day for Brits as their favorite player was not able to make the ATP final 4 at the O2 Arena in London when Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina beating Roger Federer 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Del Potro moves onto the semi finals along with Federer and Soderling. If Del Potro had lost one more game against Federer, Murray and Federer would have advanced. Murray beat Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-7 , 7-6 but all for nought as he is out of the tournament which is based on a complicated ranking system. Rafael Nadal of Spain was eliminated after two consecutive losses. Davydenko and Soderling square off today’s matches along with Nadal vs Djokovic. Davydenko could make it with a big win today. Djokovic still has a chance to make it to the final. Djokovic has been playing much better of late with his new racket.

Roger Federer et Juan Martin Del Potro se sont qualifiés jeudi 26 novembre pour les demi-finales du Masters de tennis de Londres. Andy Murray, malgré sa victoire face à l’Espagnol Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/3), ne sera pas du dernier carré. Dans le groupe A, en effet, le Suisse, l’Argentin et l’Ecossais, à égalité de victoires (deux chacun) et de sets gagnés, ont dû être départagés au pourcentage de jeux remportés. Last night, over 17,000 fans packed an arena in London, England, to watch Roger Federer, arguably the best tennis player ever, flirt with exit from the season ending World Tour Finals tournament. He still lost his match, but didn’t go out, because this is the group stages of the tournament, a round-robin stage. Instead, by winning the second set on a tie-break, before falling to an overall two sets to one defeat, he won a sufficient number of games to ensure his progress.

Three of the four players in the group that Federer and his conquerer, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina, won two matches and lost one. The other player was Britain’s (or Scotland’s, to appease Scottish readers) Andy Murray. Federer won 44 games and lost 40 in his three matches, del Potro won 45 and lost 43, while Murray won 44 and lost 43, losing a heavy final set to Roger Federer. So Murray was eliminated from the tournament by a single game. It was undoubtedly a thrilling climax, and the tournament will now progress.

Interestingly enough, the 6-3 final set scoreline was about the only score by which Murray could have been knocked out – or at least, that’s what the BBC reports. Of course, a 6-2 or 6-1 scoreline for del Potro would have still put Federer and del Potro through, although 6-0 would have put Federer out. 6-4 and del Potro would be boarding the flight home this morning, same with 7-5 or 7-6.

Furthermore, for those conspiracy theorists out there, del Potro crumbled in the second set tie break from an eminently winnable position, and wimpered to defeat. A straight sets defeat for Federer and he was out. Is it beyond the realms of possibility that these two chaps contrived to engineer one of the few possible scores that ensured they both progressed?

Given Nick’s recent post on corruption in soccer, tennis is an eminently more corruptable sport than soccer. That isn’t to say soccer is clear, or tennis bent because of the different number of players engaging each other in a given match (22 plus subs and officials in soccer, 2 plus officials in tennis). It’s just to give some bait to those who like a good conspiracy theory (and hadn’t already spotted this probably fairly obvious one!).

What I’m more interested and amused about is the arena those 17,000 fans packed into. Nine years ago, to great fanfare, that same arena was opened as the Millennium Done, to general farce and ridicule. It didn’t last too long, was strongly criticised as a waste of money, and lay dormant for quite a while. It’s nice though to see that someone took on the rather obvious idea of turning it into a venue. It’s now the O2 Arena thanks to the mobile phone company’s sponsorship, and it hosts musical concerts, even an opera (Carmen next May), and now, excitingly, sports events. That London and the UK now has a venue for hosting indoor sports events to suitably large crowds (over 17,000) is very exciting, and I’d be interested to see how much public money had to be sunk into that one – my imagination is that, if we forget about the costs to develop the Dome way back, it’s probably fairly small. Or maybe I’m being naive?

Puño arriba para Del Potro que ya superó a Federer

Juan Martín Del Potro dió el batacazo al vencer a Roger Federer 6-2, 6-7 y 6-3 y de esta manera convertirse en uno de los cuatro semifinalistas del Torneo de Maestros que se está disputando en Londres. En consecuencia Andy Murray, que era uno de los favoritos antes de comenzar el certamen, quedó eliminado por haber ganado un game menos que el argentino (ambos cosecharon dos victorias). El otro que se despidió del Grupo A fue el español Fernando Verdasco.

El tandilense parece haberle tomado el gustito a ganarle al número uno del mundo. Meses atrás daba la sensación de que Del Potro jamás le ganaría al suizo, ya que desde aquella primera vez que se cruzaron (Wimbledon 2007) hasta principios de septiembre había sido vencido en seis oportunidades consecutivas. Pero en la final del último US Open el argentino cortó esa racha negativa y además de darse el gusto de derrotar por primera vez en su carrera a Federer se transformó en el segundo tenista argentino y sudamericano en conquistar este Grand Slam.

Ésta es la segunda victoria y encima consecutiva. Del Potro siente que ahora sí puede ganarle al suizo y se le anima hiriéndolo por todos lados, básicamente a través de su gran servicio. Pero hoy mostró una gran solidéz en el primer set debido a que lo pasó literalmente por arriba y en muy pocos minutos ya cosechaba una ventaja de 5-1.

Sin embargo el número uno del mundo demostró toda su categoría y se llevó el segundo parcial. Si bien el tercero y decisivo arranco favorable para Roger, Del Potro supo dar batalla y revertir lo que parecia derrota y descalificación.

Con lo justo pasó el tandilense y dejó afuera a quien era el gran candidato de antemano, es decir, el británico Andy Murray. Junto con el sueco Robin Soderling que fue el primero en clasificarse y sin dudas la sorpresa del torneo,  esperan las semifinales a la que le quedan tan sólo un lugar vacante, que podrá ocuparlo el serbio Novak Djokovic, que juega con el ya eliminado Rafael Nadal, o bien el ruso Nicolay Davydenko,que chocará con Soderling.
