Z pewnością jest jednym z najciekawszych obecnie artystów tworzących mash-up’y. Ostatnią płytę “Feed the Animals” wydał w ten sam sposób, co Radiohead swoje “In Rainbows” – udostępniając do ściągnięcia ze strony internetowej po uiszczeniu jakiejkolwiek, nawet czysto symbolicznej opłaty, oczywiście na licencji Creative Commons. Wszystkie kawałki są też do odsłuchania na MySpace i You Tube. Poniżej próbka jego umiejętności.

PREVIEW: DOWNLOAD Girl Talk’s Live Performance at Yale

Yeah, Girl Talk mashes pre-recorded music live at every show. A lot of people might be turned off by that. Fair enough; with no live instrumentation and no live singing, it’s perfectly valid to be wary. But there’s a reason for Girl Talk’s reputation, and there’s a reason that the vast majority of his concerts have been wildly successful.

True, Gregg Gillis kicks off most of his shows the same way — slowly warping electronic beats into the words “Girl Talk” may be a mainstay at almost every show that he’s done. But apart from that intro and the toilet paper blowers, the similarities end there. Gillis mixes a different set of tracks for every show, and while those may include skeletal versions of Feed the Animals, Night Ripper, or other albums he’s released in the past, the timing is consistently varied and the selections are never exactly the same.

Plus, at any given point in a Girl Talk show you’re guaranteed to be moving. You will be involved in a great communal hoedown. You will be vying for the recognition of hitting an inflatable beach ball (or whatever else might be going through the air) in your half-square-foot of maneuverability. Say what you will about the quality of the songs — nothing beats the live concert experience.

Don’t believe me? Just listen to the recording that 20 Watts obtained from Girl Talk’s May 30 show at Yale University. Fun is pretty much mandatory.

– Eric Vilas-Boas

ACT II: Girl Talk at UVA Let me begin at the end. This past weekend, UVA’s University Program

ACT II: Girl Talk at UVA

Let me begin at the end. This past weekend, UVA’s University Program’s Council brought Girl Talk to John Paul Jones Arena for a free show. It seemed like the perfect way to kick off the annual Block Party festivities and don the elusive game face. Gillis was en pointe, mixing live and remixing some of his hits from the Feed the Animals and Night Ripper albums. Unfortunately, JPJ is a huge arena and the security staff wouldn’t let many people on the floor, putting a damper on the night and causing a lot of people to leave. It was bad planning, but I managed to get down to the floor with a friend, and was elated to hear him mix 80s rock i.e. the stuff that frat parties are made of with rap, pop, and slow jams. It was over entirely too soon, and all I was left with was a stolen blue wristband and a chiropractic nightmare proffered by my over energetic and largely unnecessary head banging. The man known as Girl Talk, despite his nerdy exterior and conspicuous lack of music instruments had rocked the house.

ACT I: Intro to Girl Talk

Fall semester of my third year, I wrote a research paper on Girl Talk, sampling, and fair use. Forever a mash-up fan, I dig what Girl Talk does and think that his music is transformative, and shouldn’t be considered stealing. My thesis?

Digital technology gives unprecedented voice and creative power to fans and amateurs that copyright law tries to prohibit. The convention of sampling used by Girl Talk and other artists like him is an imperative example of beneficial user generated content and fandom enabled by modern technology and the internet. Girl Talk has garnered success and critical acclaim working outside of the mainstream, using the internet, illegal downloading, and blogs to his advantage and creating a new type of fandom. Intellectual Property Rights as they stand are too restrictive, and should be expanded to accommodate and allow sampling. In Girl Talk’s case in particular, creativity should be supported rather than stifled.

I considered Girl Talk the original master of mash-ups, but quickly came to realize that artists like Norwegian Recycling, DJ Earworm, Lenlow and Milkman (to name a few), were doing similar things with music. It stays underground for the most part because as per fair use, these artists can’t legally profit off of the thousands of samples that they use to create mash-ups. Girl Talk’s last album, Feed The Animals (2008) was available from Illegal Art for a “donation,” similar to Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” (2007) album. Neither act found the distribution particularly profitable, but is essentially the only option for artists like Girl Talk. The money he makes comes from live shows; only recently did he even quit his day job for a fulltime performing gig. Before I graduate, I was determined to see him.

For more info on Girl Talk, check out this exclusive interview with him on the day of the concert.

I’m waiting for Rhino Records to call me with my copy of Portugal. The Man’s “The Satanic Satinist,” the new one everyone is talking about. I couldn’t find it at Target, Best Buy or Rhino last week! I’m a little in the dark, waiting for my own copy to give it a listen. Sure it’s good, though – “Church Mouth” is one of my favorite albums. And “Censored Colors” was good, but overlooked.

I just downloaded Grizzly Bear’s new one, Veckatimest. I have to say, I’m not a fan. I’ve gotten about halfway through the album and I’m not sure what the fuss over this band is. They’ve got some good qualities, but overall I get very bored listening.

This SoCal beach-based band has been around for 14 years, and evolved from a second wave ska act to something with far too many labels to full encompass them (progressive, reggae, ska, rock, funk to name a few). I interviewed the guys when they came to Cal Poly last fall, and just caught them on their headlining tour with Dredg at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Killer, to say the least. Their sound gets more off the wall with each record, and for me, that tends to be a good thing. “Mandala” is no different. Gets better with each listen. UPDATE: check box widget on the sidebar to download a track from “Mandala”!

Now, something a bit disappointing was The Mars Volta’s new one, “Octahedron.” I expect a lot from this band, who is now on its fifth album and has a very strong cult-like following of prog rockers, scenesters and hipsters. “Octahedron” is so-so. It’s got a few cool tracks, like “Cotopaxi,” but is nothing new. It’s easy to forget. I still have got to claim “Frances The Mute” as my favorite. Closely followed by “De Loused” and a few tracks from “Amputechture,” like the 11-minute “Meccamputechture” Now that’s the Volta I know. “Octahedron” is sort of just there. Doesn’t do anything significant for me. Just a bit too mellow for this outlandish band, who I still can’t wait to see at Outside Lands in San Francisco in about a month.

Lastly, I just saw mega mashup DJ Girl Talk @ The Fox Theater in Pomona Friday night. Great, great venue. Three bars, space for 2,000, multiple rooftop lounges. Rad. I was unsure of going to see a DJ headline a show at a venue much larger than your typical LA club. While the free show only brought out maybe 1,000, Girl Talk got 40+ people dancing on stage with him his whole show, and got me and the rest of the crowd dancing. Mixing tracks from “Feed The Animals” (download it there…you pay what you want) and “Night Ripper” with an eclectic variety of other mainstream and classic hits and beats, Gregg Gillis aka Girl Talk impressed. Not to mention, the guy plastic wraps his laptop so his sweat doesn’t get all over it.

Hit me up if you need some tracks. I’ve got the tuneage.

Recently I picked up the new Girl Talk album Feed the Animals. I dont listen to a lot of rap but I do have a tendancy to find something I really like. Not that his album is straight up rap either, its quite an amazing mix of all different genre’s of music smashed togather like two cars in the rain. It’s hard to describe outright what he does, but I guess its kind of like what can be heard in some clubs with a good dj mixing the way he’s supposed to. The fact that he pulls music from the 60s thru every decade up til this moment says something for his appreciation of all musicians. What I find truly amazing about the album is how well say procal harem’s “whiter shade of pale” sounds good with some nice rap lyrics right over, which leads to a total remix of “No Diggity” to about 4 or 5 different sampling. It works so well if you ever liked any of the songs used it’ll probably well sit very well in your stomach so ur brain can digest what it just took in. The only real problem with the album I have is that i dont always know what music he’s sampling, but really it doesn’t matter if it sounds good. Sometimes ignorance is bliss after all. It’s the type of album you could pretty much listen to wherever you want to. It’s hard to believe some of what he samples an mixes togather works so well. So do yourself a favor an take a listen to his myspace then go out an get Feed the Animals cause it’ll make your whole day better and maybe your nights a little more exciting

While most popular, critically acclaimed musicians like to isolate themselves onstage surrounded by expensive equipment and security, Greg Gillis, better known by his stage name Girl Talk, prefers something quite different. At Elon University Gillis invited 200 lucky ticket holders to join him dancing onstage during his set.

Rapper Lupe Fiasco and Girl Talk made their way to North Carolina Friday to perform in what would be Elon University’s largest concert ever. Despite the rain outside and the hot temperatures in the gym, over 2000 Elon students and locals attended the show, which lasted for over two and a half hours. Students waited in long lines for hours just to be let into the venue.

It was not the first time the two had joined each other for a joint show at a local college. Most recently, Fiasco and Girl Talk both performed a free show at Duke University.

A Busy Day

Students were let into the gym at around 8 p.m. Girl Talk was the first to perform, taking the stage at 8:30 and playing for close to an hour and a half. During his set Girl Talk showered the crowd with minature candies and 99 rolls of toilet paper fired out of a leafblower. Fiasco began his set around 10:15 and played for an hour, donning an Elon University basketball jersey for his final three songs to the crowd’s delight.

The show had been eagerly anticipated by the community since the two acts were announced at a special event earlier in the spring. Ticket buyers were also entertained by a light show and giant video screen during the two performances. By the time Fiasco’s performance ended just after 11 p.m., the crowd was visibly exhausted from dancing all night.

Looking Ahead

It marked a significant step forward for Elon’s Student Union Board, who set up and ran the show. In the past, the student organization has brought smaller, lesser known bands to campus for big events like this one. Previous spring acts have included pop artists Sister Hazel and Jack’s Mannequin.

Most students hailed the show as a success when exiting. By the time the show was over, students only had one question left: How does SUB top it next year?

When the show was announced, I had recognized the name Girl Talk but I was far from familiar with th

When the show was announced, I had recognized the name Girl Talk but I was far from familiar with the music of mashup-master, Gregg Gillis. Between then and his performance on Saturday, I gave his latest album, Feed The Animals, quite a few spins. The music was certainly growing on me but I was more excited about seeing him work his magic on stage.

April 11th rolled around and I traveled over to St. Lawrence University for the show. I arrived at the Leithead Fieldhouse at 9:15pm. After going through a relatively thorough search, I was admitted and made my WAIH (couldn’t resist, you’ll see why…) up to the right-hand side of the stage where the rest of the WAIH 90.3 (Potsdam College Radio) crew was hanging out. We had an entire portion at the edge of the barrier claimed for ourselves.

People began to trickle in steadily but there was a surprising absence of any great crowd as we approached showtime. 10pm came and went. By now there were lots of people trying to get through our radio contingent and establish a position closer to the front. We were non too pleased. Those of us on the outside of our group decided to link arms to help protect the group within from the violent shoving that was taking place behind us.

At 10:20, members from ACE, the St. Lawrence campus activities studio association, came out on stage and announced that the show would begin soon. They also encouraged the audience to calm down and relax a bit. Sadly, no one seemed to take the suggestion to heart. The crowd only became more unruly. At 11:01, final stage preparations were made and Gregg Gillis made his way onto the stage. The crowd cheered and a group of audience members was ushered onto the stage to dance alongside Gregg.

People started to jump over the barrier at the front of the stage and climb up to join the dancers. Sadly, there wasn’t any security visibly present at the front of the stage on the right side and the climbers were getting over without being challenged. The stage was crowded with people. Several people had even climbed onto the speakers on either side and were dancing off of them.

At 11:24, Gregg announced, ” Thanks everyone, have a great night!” and he walked off stage. Needless to say, the audience was not pleased. We were all told that the break would be short and the show would continue soon if the audience calmed down. It took about 20 minutes for any kind of progress to take place. Crowd members were shouting all sorts of expletives against Girl Talk and demanding that we start a riot. It was complete chaos and pandemonium. I didn’t see any security personnel near the barrier trying to work with the situation.

Finally, at 11:45, the show started again but without audience members being allowed to dance on stage. I stayed at the front of the crowd for about 20 more minutes and then got tired of dealing with the ensuing violence among the audience members (accidental or otherwise). The show went on until 12:50.

I don’t hold Girl Talk responsible for any of the mishaps of the evening. I had a great time during the actual performance portions. I paid for the experience more than anything and I certainly got an experience to remember. I’m just glad that I walked away without any injury, though a friend of mine had his nose broken during the show.

I was disappointed with the organization of the show. The security personnel obviously weren’t prepared or even trained for such an event. The security running the searches at the entrance wasn’t prepared to search 2,000 people in such a short period of time. I hope that future events can go much better at St. Lawrence University.

Here is a collection of videos I captured during the show:

if you’re like me and infrequently exercise at a gym like or exactly golds gym in venice, let me help you further the journey by recommending the following listening before, during and after your awkward, unfulfilling and relatively comatose workout…

the warmup: atmosphere / god loves ugly

why: because i didn’t and should have. i listened to atmosphere’s “when life gives you lemons…” instead and it wasn’t the atmosphere i wanted to listen to. i’ve tried to listen to it a bunch, but it’s never been the atmosphere i wanted to listen to. this is the one. if you live in my apartment, walk at my pace, go to my gym and awkwardly fist-pound the monster/trainer who once gave you his business card at california chicken cafe and told you he could train you for a measly ninety-dollars an hour, you should pop in “god loves ugly” – easily one of the greatest album titles ever (album titles, kina!) – and listen to give me, modern man’s hustle and shrapnel. and breathe while you stretch.

the cardio: girl talk / feed the animals

why: because it’s the perfect running music. it’s every song you love in small doses and hate in their entirety brought to you only in small doses and never in their entirety. it’s eight seconds of lil wayne and the best moments of blackstreet and it’s yael naim with eminem and jay z with radiohead and it’s fast and there’s a lot going on and if you don’t mind running next to a giant croatian woman so rich with muscle fiber you could drop a marble on her shoulder and play labyrinth down her arm, then girl talk is for you. it is sure to keep your attention off the fact that you are the smallest human in the building (except for (most of) the mexican custodial staff) and that although you’ve run a staggering eight minutes, your legs feel about as stiff and useless as the bay cities french bread that’s been sitting on your counter for well over a week.

the weight training: m83 / saturdays = youth

why: because i love this album. it has nothing to do with working out, it’s just a great album. if you’re in the shape i’m in and have just gotten off the treadmill, girl talk has made you want to listen to, well, not girl talk and exercising has made you want to lift, well, nothing. slow it down with m83. sure, it’s not conducive to weight training, but while i call this weight training, it’s really just doing a few curls while you stop sweating enough to comfortably put your jacket back on and walk home. this is also a great time to send a few texts, twitter/tweet, answer emails and decide what’s for dinner (tonight was a california chicken salad from the chicken cafe, hold the peppers and hold the carrots).

happy exercising!

Okay so this album is old news for most but hopefully new for some of you. Girl Talk over the summer released his amazing new album Feed The Animals. One of his biggest and most in-depth mix-mash albums to date. If you’ve never heard of Girl Talk, that’s even better. Here’s a chart from Wired that will help explain. Still not getting it?

This is the second Top Albums of 2008 list on OwlPellets, the first of which can be found here. You’ll notice that only 1 album overlaps onto both lists, which I’d like to point out is some great diversity which few blogs have Unfortunately, my top 2 albums of the year also happen to be Pitchfork’s top 2 album’s of the year. But hey, shit happens.

For my 2007 list (which I’d like to add Battles’ Mirrored to- I discoverd that album after the list was made) click here. Though I made a top 20 last year, I wasn’t quite feeling up to that task this time around. So with that, here are my top 10 albums of 2008:
