127.0.0.1 www.northmay.com
127.0.0.1 northmay.com 127.0.0.1 northmay.com

This weeks topic, blogging, had a lot more content than I’ve encountered in this unit previous

This weeks topic, blogging, had a lot more content than I’ve encountered in this unit previously and I had to set aside a bit more time to get through it. There were two main reading materials, Rebecca Blood’s weblogs: a history and perspective (2000) and an extract from Jill Walker Rettberg’s Blogging (2008) entitled Blogs, Communities and Networks. Two activities based on these readings involved discussions on via blackboard, here’s my answers to the questions asked by Gwyneth Peaty:

Activity One

1.

In 2000 Rebecca Blood predicted ‘the power of weblogs to transform both writers and readers from “audience” to “public” and from “consumer” to “creator.”‘ How do these ideas stand up in 2009?

I think Blood’s predictions have come true. Blogs provide a platform that enables anybody to express their opinion, and not just through the ability to post but also through commenting, which enables anybody to participate in a conversation with other readers and the author of the original post.

What do you think about the relationship between blogs and journalism?

Journalists report unbiased factual information about an event, while blogs enable people to provide their personal account or opinion. I don’t feel as though mainstream news will be replaced by blogs – to me, mainstream news provides factual information, whereas blogs provide a platform for the exchange of personal accounts and opinions often related to a news event. Each serve their own purpose; people use mainstream news to get informed of what is happening around the world, blogs on the other hand allow people to share and discuss their opinion or experience with others.

What are the effects of blogging upon the mainstream press?

Blogs can be a good source of information for mainstream press, and can provide journalists with access to firsthand accounts on an event, or insight into the public’s opinion on something.

What do you see as the role of the ‘citizen journalist’?

To provide a personal account or opinion on an event. Different from mainstream journalists as they are not limited by what they can and can’t say, citizen journalists can provide powerful insight into news events, however I feel that they may not always be a reliable source of factual information.

2.

Rettberg talks about blogs facilitating ‘distributed conversations’ and even ‘distributed communities’; what do you understand these terms to mean?

I think these terms refer to the ability of blogs to allow conversations to occur both over a long time-span and in different locations, such as different blogs, through the use of permalinks.

Have you ever been caught between ‘colliding networks’?

No (Thankfully!), but I have been cautious!

What do you think about ‘publicly articulated relationships’ online? How do they challenge/influence our ways of interacting ‘offline’?

I think they can be a contributing factor to colliding networks, in that how we interact online with our social network is persistent and often times anybody can view these interactions and form opinions based on those interactions. However, I also feel that publicly articulated relationships can provide opportunities for us, through the forming of new connections based on interests or mutual ties to other people, as well as the exchange of ideas and opinions between other people from different backgrounds to our own.

More generally, what did you find most interesting in the Rettberg article?

I found the emerging social networks section the most interesting, it’s interesting to think about where we will be in 20 years in terms of technology and personal publication tools. Will blogs still be around? Or will they be replaced by new tools?

Activity 2

Activity 2 involved finding 6 blogs of interest and subscribing to their RSS feed. I chose to use an application (FeedDemon) on my computer to aggregate my chosen RSS feeds mainly because of the additional features that generally accompany software. So far I’ve chosen 3 blogs closely related to online computer gaming, however I struggled to find a further three that I was interested in reading. As such I switched to another topic of interest to me, Search Engine Optimization and quickly found 10 blogs that I was interested in. I’m now looking at 178 unread posts sitting in FeedDemon! The final task was to add my delicious bookmark page to FeedDemon, though I see this as a convenience the real power will be adding other peoples bookmarks to the reader, which I’m going to start doing soon.

NetNewsWire 3.2 is out, and is now stable. Somewhere around the same time, FeedDemon 3,0 was also released. This pretty much completes NewsGator plans to settle down with Google Reader as the synchronisation location, rather than Newsgator Online.

As a Mac, user however, NNW 3.2 came as a big disappointment. Especially when you look at what NewsGator has been able to achieve with FeedDemon. I have been following the NNW updates religiously, since NNW decided to move to Google Reader.

During this period of instability, I also moved to Gruml, which shows great promise to be a very good offline client for Google Reader, for Mac users. It, obviously has a long way to go.

Article Actions, Gruml

I am very surprised by the lack of Google Reader features that are missing in NNW. Especially so, since the same company decided to make these available in their Windows equivalent. I am especially referring to sharing, liking, and sharing with notes and Twitter integration (Limited to sending articles to Twitterrific and I don’t use Twitterrific). Also, I cannot read items shared by others on NNW.

Article Actions, NetNewsWire

RSS Readers have a huge possibility, but a few seem to willing to exploit it and include features that makes the RSS experience valuable.

For now, it seems, I am switching between to Gruml and Google Reader for my feeds.

Most of my plans for last week went out of the window when Ancestry.co.uk updated their London Historical Records collection, and consequently I did get much of my filing done. I also couldn’t resist doing some research last week and added a couple of pair of 4x great grandparents to my family tree. So this week I need to get back to some organising and filing.

Continue working through my stuff to sort folder, making sure I have all the data on my PC and then throw away the paper copy. I really want to get the paper folders done so I can turn my attention to the digital files.

I want to put together a research plan for the GEERING family from Lewes, Sussex. I want something ready so that if I get the opportunity to head down to the East Sussex Record Office I can just grab it and go. This will mostly be making sure I have all my data on Family Historian and a list of parish records that I need to check.

All the information that I gathered down at the West Sussex Record Office on Saturday needs to be entered into Family Historian and onto my other record spreadsheets. Having almost cleared all my paper files I don’t want to start collecting them again.

I must update my blogroll this week, most of my blog reading is done via FeedDemon and the list on my blog no way reflects the feeds I have in FeedDemon.

Exporta a HTML

English | Español I have been using NewsGator applications for quite a long time in order to be up-t

English | Español

I have been using NewsGator applications for quite a long time in order to be up-to-date on everything that goes on in technology and gaming, especially its Web version (NewsGator Online) and its Windows software (FeedDemon). However, this morning’s news from BradSoft surprised me about its planned changes.

NewsGator will no longer continue offering its free consumer version of NewsGator Online. It has been my favorite RSS aggregator. I was even using it more than the Windows app. It saves all of the feeds online, instead of storing it on my PC. Now I’m going to have to say adiós to it. Because it works together with NG Online, I’ve recently synchronized FeedDemon to work with Google Reader instead of with its own NG service. Enterprise clients will see no changes and will still use NG Online. NG recommends its users to download and install the latest version of their Windows and Mac software (NetNewsWire) to be able to synchronize it with Google Reader. An iPhone version of NNW is also available.

The company will also discontinue support the free consumer versions of NewsGator Inbox, NewsGator Go!, and NewsGator’s RSS features after August 31st. If you are a NewsGator user, you can go to its site to get more info such as instructions and FAQs.

Update (7-30-09): Since I posted this, Newsgator has made some changes in how they do things. There will be a new version of FeedDemon that can sync with Google Reader, but it is not clear to me at this point whether it will still be free. More later on this.

In a previous post, I mentioned that I had started using Newsgator’s FeedDemon to track blog posts. See the May 20, 2009, post here. I described some of the basic features in that post, but I have since discovered a number of other goodies in FeedDemon.

Since I am now subscribed to more than 70 blogs, I definitely don’t want all those feeds coming in to my e-mail. Subscribing by RSS feed with FeedDemon helps me to do a quick scan of the topics. The main screen looks like this:

The left column is the list of my subscribed blogs. In the center is the list of posts on the blog I’ve selected in the left column. The right column contains the blog post I’m currently reading. I scan the blog column where I see in bold print the ones that have updates. I select the one I want to read, and the latest post appears in the right window. I scan the title and first paragraph to see if it’s worth reading the whole thing. If not, I just mark it “read” and move on.

The blogs I subscribe to help me keep up with trends in the publishing industry, news from writers I follow, daily Bible study, world news—you name it. It would take me forever to read every word of every feed every day. FeedDemon helps me make quick work of it. I can flag individual posts (notice the blog titles in red font above. I can add posts to my clippings folder if I want to save them for later reference.

I’m not the only one who likes FeedDemon. See Reviewsaurus.com

If you use Google Reader, you will soon be able sync it with FeedDemon and have the best of both worlds. FeedDemon has new version coming out soon that allows this. Check it out here.

Try it! Go to the Newsgator site to download FeedDemon. It’s free. If you use use a Mac or iPhone, other Newsgator products are available here. Reminder: you do need to sign up for the online Newsgator account in order to use FeedDemon. With the online account, you can access your blogs from any computer (as long as you remember your username and password).

I’m not what you’d call a huge internet geek. I can search and (for the most part) navigate my way around to find what I need but when I stumbled across Tweetdeck, I felt I’d hit gold. For someone who trades every day (for the most part), Tweetdeck tells me in real time what other traders were talking about. I mean, use my trusted RSS feedreader (FeedDemon) to scan news thoughout the day, but what were actual traders focusing on? What you might feel is important in the news might not be worth a hill of beans (to coin my Mother) to other traders. I might be going in the wrong direction of the market. Tweetdeck gives me that link to the real world. I get market sentiment from actual floor traders, bloggers, financial columnists and gurus from around the globe 24/7 and the best part, it’s FREE.

What makes Tweetdeck different from Twitter, StockTwits or other *twit-like* websites is Tweetdeck is an stand-alone platform with somewhat customizable columns so I have my column of Friends I’ve assembled over time, a column of those Recommended by Twitter and even a column just for me that includes any tweets with my name in them (so I’ll know if you diss me behind my back) *lol* Change format colors, tweet by phone, shorten the URLs that you may post and if your tweet if over 140 characters, never fear. Simply click and *wallah* Tweetdeck will shorten your tweet for you. Awesome!

Since installing my RSS feedreader FeedDemon and my *pulse of the trading floor* Tweetdeck, I no longer even glance at streaming news from anywhere else. I’m happy and content in my own little world and what’s most important to me, I’m in control

For more information you can click the Tweetdeck link on the home page or get TechCrunch scoop @ http://www.crunchbase.com/company/tweetdeck

So with mishmashmosh’s blog being phased out (plus the fact that it takes FOREVER to update),

So with mishmashmosh’s blog being phased out (plus the fact that it takes FOREVER to update), some of you may want to find a new method to keep track of everyone’s blogs. I’m just going to quickly run through the basics.

What is RSS?

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication’ and (in simple terms) is just a way of sending new content (like blog posts, news, videos, etc.) out to different ‘readers’ in a standardized format. The main benefit of this is that you can collect or ‘aggregate’ all the new stuff you want to view into 1 place.

How do I get to these RSS feeds?

For WordPress, it would be: http://[blog link].wordpress.com/feed (eg. mishmashmosh)

For Blogspot, it would be: http://[blog link].blogspot.com/rss.xml (eg. krissybubbles)

For Tumblr, it would be: http://[blog link].tumblr.com/rss (eg. blitherblather)

Most of the news/blog-style sites that you visit will also have an RSS link somewhere. Just look for this icon or the word RSS, feed or Atom (which is alternative to RSS).

What do I do with these?

You can ’subscribe’ to these with an RSS reader. If you’re running Firefox, you’ll be presented with a page where it will give you an option on where to add the feed to. Or, you can manually add it into one of the following:

1. Google Reader

Google has its own web-based feed reading service, which extremely handy if you have a Google account. You can view in full post mode, or if you like the personal feel of individual blogs, you can have it in heading view with the ability to click through. It’s a great service, and there’s a few neat features like the ability to share interesting posts among friends, and individual feed stats (Belle’s old blog has an impressive 18 subscribers).

2. FeedDemon

FeedDemon is a desktop-based RSS reader which I use. In the end, you’re generally not going to find too much difference between all the feed readers, but what’s great about FeedDemon is the ability to sync with Google Reader. It also provides little notifications when there’s a new post. It has a number of other features as well, and as a desktop-based reader, it feels quite a bit more responsive.

3. Alternatives

There’s a whole heap of other web, desktop and mobile based aggregators. A few can be found on Wikipedia here. Google Reader has a mobile version here, and an iPhone version here. Do you have any other alternatives? (I remember Jero mentioning one with Windows Live?) Any other questions?

In a previous post, I talked about RSS Feeds and Google Reader. See that post here. Since then, I’ve further evaluated feed readers, and I’ve decided to use NewsGator’s desktop companion, FeedDemon, to monitor the 40-plus blog feeds I am following. Here’s a screen-shot of the FeedDemon interface.

NewsGator works pretty much like any other online feed reader. However, FeedDemon is downloaded to your computer at www.feeddemon.com. You need to be online to use FeedDemon once it’s installed, but you can also “prefetch” feeds for browsing offline if you have situations where you can’t get Internet access for a short time.

In the graphic above, you see the feeds list on the left. The next column to the right is a list of the posts on the current feed. The last column displays the content of the selected post. There’s a built-in tutorial for those just starting out. If you get so far behind reading your feeds that you just can’t catch up, just go to Tools and hit Panic Button. All your feeds will be marked as read, and you’ll have a clean slate.

FeedDemon synchronizes with NewsGator online so that, if you are away from your computer, you can still track your feeds by going to NewsGator on another computer. When you re-open FeedDemon on your own computer, it will synch with NewsGator once again.

Download it and give it a try. You can import your feeds from your former reader. FeedDemon also has a Find New Feeds feature and a Clippings folder where you can save posts you want to access later.

If you haven’t subscribed to this blog yet, let this feed be the first one you add to your FeedDemon. You can subscribe via e-mail if you prefer. See top right column.

On one of the online groups I belong to, someone asked, “What are feeds and how do I learn to

On one of the online groups I belong to, someone asked, “What are feeds and how do I learn to use them.” Not a direct quote, but close. This person had tried to find answers on the Net, but she said the information she found was too technical for her as a beginner. This post is an attempt to solve her problem.

Six Apart has a great beginners’ explanation of feeds. Click here to read the entire article, then come back for my specific recommendations on how to get started using feeds to follow other people’s blogs.

The article mentions several feed readers (or aggregators) that can be used to make following blogs efficient. Google Reader is easy to use, and there are online tutorials where you can learn how to use it. If you don’t have a Google account, you have to set one up at www.reader.google.com. Once you set up your username and password for Reader, you can use Gmail and other Google services from the same account.

For those who already have a Google account, just log in to your Gmail account. Reader appears as one of your choices at the top of the page. Click on Reader. The help section doesn’t really tell you much unless you know something about feed readers, so I suggest you go to the video tutorials at Butterscotch.com and work through all of the lessons on using RSS feeds and Google Reader. There are several, but here’s the link to the first one.

If you don’t have a Google account and don’t want to open one, you can use any one of a number of feed readers recommended in the Six Apart article. I have tried Bloglines and Newsgator myself. Both are free services, so I suggest you try them both before making your decision on which you will use. Sign up for a Bloglines account at http://www.bloglines.com/. Newsgator can we used online, or you can download FeedDemon for use on your computer. To get started with Newsgator, set up your account at http://www.newsgator.com/.

If you just want to keep it simple, Google Reader is your best bet. Once you are familiar with how the feed reader works, you can check out the others.

I invite you so subscribe to this blog. The stated purpose is to provide information about online resources for all writers but especially those writing for the Christian market. Check out the older posts, or use the search feature to see what else is offered here.

The online world is changing at blazing-fast speeds. Every day untold numbers of blog posts are publ

The online world is changing at blazing-fast speeds. Every day untold numbers of blog posts are published, Web sites are launched, and files are uploaded and shared. The Internet is unquestionably saturated by content ranging from images of cute ninja kitties to genealogy databases to social networking sites for skeeball players. However, despite the fun places to visit online, and the great source of information it provides, much of what is on the Internet is just noise. In fact, it is now so loud and big that no one knows exactly how big it is.

With all that Internet noise, how will you know when the Web sites that you love to visit have updates? One option is to bookmark (or save) your favorites in your browser, so you’ll have the links readily available for when you want to go back again. The problem with this idea is that have to keep going to the Web sites to see if anything has changed. You will also have to remember what it looked like the last time you visited, so you will noticed what’s different.

But what if you were able to go to one place on the Internet to see if this week’s image of adorable ninja fuzziness had been uploaded? (Of course kitty is featured executing a mid-air roundhouse and sporting a terrycloth headband.) And what if, while you were in this one place where you could see that the ninja kitties Web site had uploaded a new image, you also saw that your sister updated the family history database, and that the local skeeball club won the regional championships last weekend.

Not only is that a better idea than managing links in bookmarks, it’s entirely do-able and totally free.

One of the easiest, time-saving online tools available today now makes it possible to know immediately when new content is uploaded to the Internet. All that is required is two things:

A Web feed reader. Readers act like electronic newspapers that double as your own personal Web site. Examples of feed readers are Google Reader, Bloglines, and FeedDemon. They keep track of all the latest content from the Web sites you subscribe to and manage the feeds you’re subscribed to.

Web feeds to subscribe to. Web feeds are just files on the Internet that update whenever a Web site it tracks updates. They are usually called RSS feeds (Really Simple Syndication) but actually can be many other file formats, such as Atom or XML.

No technical knowledge is required to take advantage of Web feeds and feed reader tools. However, in order to subscribe to a Web site’s content, the site must be feed-enabled.

To see if a site is enabled and has an RSS feed to subscribe to, look for a square feed graphic that you can click on (usually next to the words “subscribe” or “RSS feed” or “share this” or the like). It should be somewhere on the Web page, but if all else fails be sure to look at the right end of address bar. (The address bar where you’d type the Web site address you want to visit.)

I’ll talk more about Web feeds in the next Social Media in Real Life class on March 21st. For example, how to search for like-minded folks and information using feeds and what things to do to promote your feed. I hope to see you there learning about feeds and other online tools and how they apply in real life.

By the way, the (usually) orange feed graphic shown here is called a chicklet even though they’re not teeny white squares of gum or an indie rock band from Toronto or baby chickens. Weird, huh?

Regardless of what subscription feeds are called, or the technology that makes them work, I find that RSS feeds have been very valuable in helping me not missing anything important on the Internet.

Although personally, I’ve tired of the ninja kittie fad. Can we please move on to kittie solid gold dancers?
