Each year transgendered people are attacked or murdered on the basis of their perceived identities. On November 20th, the 11th International Transgender Day of Remembrance will bring attention to the brutal violence that ends lives and destroys families.

The passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act on October 28th expanded the 1969 hate crime law to include gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which includes protections based on gender identity, is also pending. These legislative efforts are a good step in the right direction, but transgender people are still vulnerable in theUnited States and further action is urgently needed.

Speaking of transgender, if you haven’t seen TransAmerica, please do it. It is an excellent movie. In my professional, humble opinion Felecity Huffman should have won the Oscar for Best Actress for her preformance in this movie.

Susan believes that Katherine attacked Julie because Angie put that idea in her head in last weeks e

Susan believes that Katherine attacked Julie because Angie put that idea in her head in last weeks episode. It would’ve made sense for Angie to say that if they were still considering Danny as their main suspect, but his name has been cleared. I have an inkling that she is covering up for someone else, say, Nick?

Moose and Susan (photo courtesy of abc.com)

The detective that offers to investigate Katherine, Denise Lapera, has an old bone to pick with Susan. In high school, Susan gave her the nickname moose and stole her boyfriend. Seriously, who holds a grudge like that for like 20 years? That’s just a tad pathetic moose.

Moose talks to Katherine and learns Katherine’s alibi – she was on the phone with her Dylan, her no-longer-existent-on-this-show daughter. While moose is talking to Katherine, she learns that Susan shot Katherine and since Susan failed to report it, she arrests Susan for her “closure.”

Angie cooks a 10,000 course meal for Bree and Orson in hopes of Bree hiring her. Initially Bree says no until a sausages and peppers crowd catering job for 500 pops up and Bree will only be hired if she makes some authentic Italian food. Bree feeds Angie a sob story about an Italian food loving, burn victim friend in hopes of getting Angie’s recipes. Angie gives them to her, but then catches Bree making them for an anniversary party. Well, Angie calls Bree a 2-faced condescending bitch who will never make a dime off of her dead grandmother. Bree apologizes to Angie and hires her and of course they have a little heart to heart. Angie tells Bree if there’s one thing she knows how to do is keep things to herself. With Bree and Angie, it’s tack vs. candid.

Gabby starts homeschooling Juanita and gets completely stressed out about it. The Solis’ new housekeeper, Ivana, stops cleaning and starts teaching. Gabby of course doesn’t fill in Carlos about this, so he fires Ivana. Eventually, Carlos says he’ll get Juanita a tutor because Gabby being her teacher is ruining their relationship. What I would like to know is, since when does Gabby do everything Carlos‘ way?

Julie confides in Lynette that it was Nick she was having the affair with after Lynette over hears them fighting. Julie says Nick loves her and wants her to take him back. Lynette tells Julie that she will handle Nick. Lynette talks to Nick, but he freaks out saying that Julie’s leading him on and if Lynette tells anyone about the affair, she’s the one who’s going to be sorry. This is when the light bulb goes off in Lynette’s head that Nick might have been the one that attacked Julie. Lynette tells Tom this and they confront Julie about it, but Julie not-so-convincingly says he would’ve never done it. Lynette and Tom report it to the police, we’ll see what they do about it in the next episode.

This week we find out that Angie has known about her husbands affair for weeks. What we don’t know is how she found out. After Lynette and Tom reported Nick to the police, of course the cops wanted to talk to him but Angie lied and gave Nick an alibi saying that he was with her all night. Obviously, Nick doesn’t really have an alibi. Nick is starting to look pretty ding, dang, dong guilty. When Angie confronts Nick about the affair, she says that he can’t go anywhere and she can’t go anywhere so they have to get through this and she’s put him through a lot so he gets this one slip up and then she socks him. What is Angie referring to?

The moral of the story this week? The truth is, there is only so much you can learn from books. The only way to truly learn is from your mistakes.

My questions this week – where was Danny and Ana this episode and where has Cecilia been all season?

Next week – Gabby confesses sins and bribes a priest, someone is sleeping with someone, Susan and Katherine go to court and Gabby finds out that Lynette is pregers. I found the preview a bit confusing.

It’s judgment day on Wisteria Lane.

I found this week’s Desperate Housewives to be a tad more amusing then it has been lately and filled with witty one liners.

Julie comes home from the hospital to quite the affectionate crowd. Honestly, way to cheesy for me. Blah. At her welcome home party she breaks up with Dominick, but the decision isn’t mutual. Then, Danny and Dominick have a “man-to-man” conversation in which we find out that Danny and Julie were fighting the night she was attacked because he thought she was lying about having a boyfriend, which of course turns out to be his dad. Dominick tricks Danny into not telling Angie about the affair, but don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll come out soon enough.

Mrs. McCluskey is back this week and confides in Lynette about her sex life. “When he’s down, it’s global, you know what I’m saying?” Personally, I think they should put Mrs. McCluskey into the story line using something other than her sex life. Anyway, so Lynette hires Mrs. McCluskey’s boyfriend, Roy, to be their handyman. Turns out, Roy’s the only one on the show who’s not afraid of Lynette and chooses to get Tom’s permission over Lynette’s because Tom is the “man of the house” and Lynette is “crunching Tom’s walnuts” which of course totally pisses Lynette off. When Lynette tails Roy, he says “Boy, you’re everywhere. We should get you a bell.” Clever Roy.

Laura Miller, played by One Tree Hill’s Barbara Alyn Woods, accuses Gabby of being a bad mother because she doesn’t hover over her kids 24/7. This ignites a fire in Gabby to throw the best kids birthday ever for Juanita, at which a monkey ends up trying to eat a clown. Success? Not so much. Funny? A little. It was all typical Gabby.

A maid at Bree and Karl’s home-away-from-home hotel finds out that Bree is cheating on her husband and decides to give her a little lesson on morality. “Cheating’s not a sin when you do it in pearls,” the maid said, sarcastically of course. Turns out the maid cheated on her husband and ended up losing him and her boyfriend and is now full of deep regret. Bree admits that she feels awful, but has no intention of stopping. “If you finish your magazine, there’s a bible in the nightstand.” Dude, this maid is funny.

<img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-256" title="a73ab9b7dcf584660b12a262834c3f71" src="http://mschelper.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/a73ab9b7dcf584660b12a262834c3f71.jpg?w=300" alt="Katherine Making Eyes at Mike During the Neighborhood Watch Meeting. It is there that Susan finds out about Katherine hitting on Mike and threatens to seriously hurt her. Then, Susan shoots Katherine in the shoulder at the end of the episode. Complete accident of course. Julie had it because she heard someone lerking around outside, Katherine the spy, and Susan being the klutz she is, fires the gun. Well, the gun was given to Julie by Danny and it was registered under the Bolen’s real name, so Angie convinces Katherine not to call the police because if she doesn’t Mike will totally get back with her. In your dreams Katherine. And Angie, we’re going to find out your secret eventually, so how about you just give us a little hint to go off of, huh?

The moral of the story is, what happens when we start judging ourselves instead of just judging others?

We watched “Phoebe in Wonderland,” a 2008 fantasy written and directed by Daniel Barnz.

This film is an off-beat tale about a nine-year-old girl, Phoebe Lichten (Elle Fanning), who is brilliant and creative, but who confounds her parents and her rigid teachers and principal with outbursts of inappropriate remarks and behavior.

Phoebe’s mother, Hillary (Felicity Huffman as a brunette), is frustrated by her inability to find time — amid housekeeping and raising two little girls — to convert her academic dissertation on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice” novels into a book. With her mother’s encouragement, Phoebe has immersed herself in Carroll’s fanciful neighborhoods to the point that she has frequent imaginary encounters with his characters. The competing forces in Phoebe’s psyche are effectively portrayed by Barnz through the blurring of identities between people in Phoebe’s real life and Humpty Dumpty, the Caterpillar, the White Rabbit, the Red Queen, and the Mad Hatter

PATRICIA CLARKSON

Coincidentally — or not, depending on your point of view — Miss Dodger, the new, idiosyncratic drama teacher (Patricia Clarkson) is mounting a musical production based on Carroll’s stories. This enterprise becomes a kind of sanctuary for Phoebe — the one place where she can overcome her compulsive outbursts. But there is too much amiss with the little girl, and with her parents, and with the management of the school, to stave off a crisis and an unexpected if not totally comfortable resolution.

Like the film “Millions” which I wrote about here on October 19, this is not for viewers who take things literally or insist on reality in their movies. The film is blessed by a talented cast — also including Bill Pullman as Peter Lichten, Phoebe’s father, and Bailee Madison as Olivia, Phoebe’s sister. The beautiful Tessa Albertson has a brief but haunting non-speaking role as Alice.

TESSA ALBERTSON

This film argues that a person cannot be defined by one or two aspects of her personality. The world around Phoebe — her parents, her siblings, her peers, and most of her teachers — failed her as long as they embraced only the “acceptable” parts of the girl or hoped to make the whole girl acceptable to them by badgering or ridiculing her.

The inscrutable Miss Dodger and the fleeting figure of Alice — who may be better acquainted than they let on at first — provide the only unqualified reassurance Phoebe receives that she, with her strengths and her weaknesses, is a person of value.

FELICITY HUFFING, ELLE FANNING, and BILL PULLMAN

Lynnette's Assets To The Company. (photo courtesy of abc.com)

All of the housewives were involved in the story line this week. The main character, or should I say characters, was not Lynette, but Lynette’s breasts. It made for a couple of comical scenes, particularly with Carlos.

Ana Catches John and Gabby Kissing. (photo courtesy of abc.com)

Gabby kisses John, or rather John kisses Gabby and Ana catches them. At least in this episode she didn’t tell Carlos, but it’s not guaranteed that it won’t come out in the future.

Bree continuously bails out on work to continue her affair with Karl leaving all the work to psycho Katherine.

Katherine Being Her New Psycho Self. (photo courtesy of abc.com)

Katherine has seriously lost it. Although I have to admit, this is the most I’ve ever liked Katherine. Watching her hop up and down outside Mike and Susan’s house and imagining herself watching a ball game with Mike is all quite comical. Now that shes on the outs with Bree because Bree gave her the ax, I’m pretty sure she’s just going to keep losing it until she completely unravels.

Susan finds out this week that Julie quit med school and was having an affair with a married man. She is let in on this huge secret by Andrew, who yay, came back this episode. The married man, “D” that Julie has been seeing is Dominick Bolen and Danny hints that he knows all about this affair by his comments to his dad at his party. I’m pretty sure the mom has no idea. Anyone else think that the mother-son relationship in that family is kind of odd?

This week Gabby is reunited with her past lover and gardener John Rowland. Suddenly John owns a restaurant, which I have to admit is pretty random. Almost like it happened just to add drama? The question is, does Gabby still have feelings for John? And his John really going to date Ana? Seriously? Bree and Carl’s affair gets more tangled this week when Bree realizes that she has more than just sexual feelings for Carl. Is it love? Maybe on Bree’s part but I’m not sure those feelings are reciprocated by Carl. Lynette finally tells her family that she’s pregnant. All of a sudden she is happy with her pregnancy? That was a very sudden shift in feelings. Bob is now Danny Bolen’s lawyer. I’m glad they’re putting Bob in the script more, but I sure hope Bob finds out something about the Bolen’s (which is eluded to in this episode) and breaks the rule of confidentiality. It’s a tad odd that you never see Julie in this episode. If Danny didn’t strangle her, then who did? I don’t know how much I believe his liquor store story. We will find out, but you can bet it won’t be until much later in the season. Watch The Full Episode Here

Felicity Huffman and I have something in common: we are both desperate for chickens. According to www.contactmusic.com, ” H. Macy and Felicity Huffman are sharing their home with some new pets – they’re raising a brood of chickens…as a project for their two children. Huffman explains, “You order them through the mail. It’s called My Pet Chicken. “You get little chicks in a box. We now have six chickens. In six months they’ll lay eggs. And she reveals the new pets have inspired Macy to embrace his creative side: “Bill has built the coop. It’s such a great coop, it makes you want to be a chicken.”

Chickens make them happy!

I would love to compare coops with Felicity and Bill. They seem like good people. I’ve lost track of Desperate Housewives over the years, so no idea what sordid things are happening on Wisteria Lane, but IRL, Huffman and Macy appear to be pretty happy. Once again, I must suspect it’s the chickens!

The company to which Huffman refers, My Pet Chicken www.mypetchicken.com is one I’ve eyed quite a bit, because they specialize in orders of as few as three chickens. Most hatcheries will not send orders of fewer than 25 day-old-chicks through the mail because the chicks need the warmth of their fellow travelers to survive their journey. In fact, when weather is particularly cold, many hatcheries will add extra chicks to their orders to assure warmth and survival. Seasoned chickenkeepers refer to these bonus chicks as “packing peanuts”.

I believe My Pet Chicken is located in Connecticut, and the word is that their chicks are supplied by Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. In addition to offering customized orders, My Pet Chicken is unusual in that they also offer some sexed bantams. Bantams are smaller than standard-sized chickens, and many standard breeds are available in bantam size, but sexing them is difficult, so most hatcheries only offer “straight run” bantams, which means you get what you get – generally some roosters along with the pullets. I don’t know if roosters are allowed to crow on Wisteria Lane, but we’re pretty sure they would not be popular on our street, so my next chicks might well arrive courtesy of My Pet Chicken.

Well, people made such a big fuss about the show that it had to be overrated, right? And if you- like me- only a caught a glimpse of episodes randomly while trying to check James Denton out (or the women,if you prefer); it could have seemed to you that the shows plot was beyond implausible, the characters unlikeable. Hence I really didn’t think the show was worth following. Oh, it was a real pleasure to come to realize that I couldn’t have been more wrong.

One night I came across Season 5 reruns and I had nothing better to do and that was it. I was hooked. The show is admittedly one of the most entertaining and original shows ever.

I used to think suburbia is boring. Oh, of course the houses look great. And of course it would be lovely to live on a street where you are close friends with your neighbors who are roughly the same age…But it would be boring. Being away from the city? Having a car as the only way of transportation? Having children around? Being married?? Being a housewife??? Oh well…of course these situations do exist. It is just that the women’s lives are never boring. And there is always so much cheating/lying/back-stabbing/plotting going on. Oh, I don’t mean these friends are doing those to each other. Oh no. But what happens with the other neighbors is always a riot!

Just on the top of my head- (from the first season alone):

* In the first episode the narrator (Mary Alice Young) kills herself. As she narrates and gives us clues, we put the pieces together and try to understand why she would do that. She had a loving son, a loving marriage and had great friends.

* Susan (Teri Hatcher) and Mike (James Denton)

She has a massive crush on the dreamy plumber/ the new neighbor Mike. He is like a breath of fresh air to Susan’s romantic life-after all Susan is the divorced mother of a teenage girl. Her husband has cheated and left her for another woman. But of course as hot as Mike is, things are complicated. He seems to be giving her mixed signals and we the viewer see what Susan does not. Mike has a lot of cash lying around, a gun in his belt, and plans& notes on the whole neighborhood. He is a man on a mission and it doesn’t seem like a very innocent one…

*Gabby (Eva Longoria)

She is cheating on her husband with her teenage gardener (Jesse Metcalfe).

* Lynette (Felicity Huffman)

She has 4 kids. She despises being a housewife as she used to be a top advertising exec. before she became a full-time mom.

*Bree ( Marcia Cross)

She is always groomed and made up. She is always prepared and meticulous and “perfect”. She is the perfect host and her family is so bothered by this.

*Edie (Nicolette Sheridan)

She is hot and is not the least bit shy about it. Edie may be hot and festive, but she is not exactly a female loved by her peers. She is just too out there…

Well if you haven’t seen the show yet, you might think this is not complicated at all. Trust me, what you just read is the overly simplified version. The comedy, intrigue and the romance are well-balanced. The thing about these women are that they are not that desperate. Hell, they are not exactly just housewives either. Before Lynette quit, she was much more successful than her husband who is also in advertising. She is desperate because she has realized is that dealing with 4 small children is a lot harder than running a company. Susan illustrates children’s books. Edie is in real estate, Gabby is an ex runway model. Well, Bree is only a housewife but then she is so obsessed with it you can say it is a career for her: she does all her own cooking, cleaning, gardening, making her own clothes, fixing everything…

Gabby is only fooling around because her seemingly rich and romantic husband is just rich, inconsiderate and a workaholic. With her past career and good looks, it isn’t that hard to imagine she has the hormones and motives to match her gardener’s… Bree might seem like the mother and wife from hell but her son will be enough to make a lot of women not wanna have kids. Lynette has the tendency to hate her husband at times since he doesn’t seem to get what a difficult job she has at home and of course because he has made her pregnant 4 times. And the little baby is the least of her troubles. Susan has no idea about the past of the love of her life and she is a generally clueless person/mother/woman. Edie is…well, you have seen the picture. And while all of their lives are interesting and complicated, the darkest secrets might be about to come from their recently deceased friend; Mary Alice…

Now that season 6 started, I am onto the new season. Of course I had seen half of season 5 and I just finished watching seasons 1& 2. Even with this weird order I’m following the show, I love every second of it. I hope they have many more seasons and keep having mysterious new neighbors with dark secrets and a dangerous agenda…Oh and of course, kudos to Marc Cherry to creating the show. And hats off to the casting people!

There was an overdose of new storyline possibilities on desperate housewives tonight. Too much drama? No way, you can’t have too much drama. The big story this week was trying to decipher whether or not Danny strangled Julie. All the signs clearly point to Danny, but I can’t help but wonder whether there is more to the story – so far the mystery is too easy to solve. As I predicted, Katherine has pretty much lost it. It’s pretty comical. The oddest thing to me this week was Mrs. McCluskey’s new romance. I personally don’t prefer see Mrs. McCluskey is a post sex scene, but I’m glad she has gotten a larger role in the story line because she is just so funny. Minus Bree, the past two weeks have been all about the children of the housewives. I would like to see more about the housewives and less about their kids, unless the kid is Andrew who disappointingly hasn’t been on the show yet. Or Julie, I’m glad she’s back. Will the days ahead be worse? Of course they will because that’s what makes us tune in every week. Watch The Full Episode Here

Elle Fanning was incredible in this role.

I really liked this movie. This is the first time I see Elle Fanning play a leading role and boy did she nail it. I’ve been really impressed with those Fanning sisters. I see a nice future for both of them. She really brought that character to life, everyone else in the movie did just okay. I’m not sure if the acting just okay or if she just did so good that everyone else paled by comparison. In either case, Elle was fantastic and she stole the performance.

Elle played a young girl called Phoebe Lichten. A cute little girl with two very unfortunate conditions. Phoebe has both OCD and Tourette’s Syndrome. She did such an impressive job that at times it was very difficult to watch her struggle as she tried to avoid doing or saying certain things.

As Phoebe lived with her condition, which for some reason the teachers at her school thought she was just misbehaving and her mother thought that doctors are too quick to medicate children. A fact that I happen to agree with, however in this case I thought she could have used the help. It is always heart breaking to watch a child in hysterics especially when they don’t understand what is happening to them, but in this movie Elle took that to a different level. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s nominated for something for her performance in this movie.

There was another wonderful performance in this film. The role of theater teacher, Mrs. Dodge played wonderfully by Patricia Clarkson was quite the surprising role. She played a teacher who deeply believes in her subject and taught it very well. She was a person to look up to and admire and she was the driving force to relieving Phoebes’ condition, if at least for a few hours of the day.

The movie tries to show you a relationship between Phoebe and her mother as the primary focus of the story, however, I didn’t see that, instead I saw a story between Phoebe and Mrs. Dodge. It is through Dodge that she eventually finds peace and learns to live with her condition, not through her Mother.

This past Sunday was the season premiere of Desperate Housewives. If you are like me and have been holding your breathe since the season finale to see who Mike Delfino’s bride was, you can finally breathe. Thank heavens it was Susan. Really, Katherine has gone a little cookoo and I’m sure will continue to be throughout the season for dramatic effect. Some may think about Lynette’s reaction to her pregnancy and think it makes her some horrible person for not loving her unborn fetuses. Personally, I’m rather annoyed she’s pregnant, I mean seriously, hasn’t there been enough about her being a mom? They made the mistake of taking off her cute, younger, entertaining kids and putting through a growth spurt so they could become rather boring. Just leave it at that. Not too much happening with Gabby and Carlos this week. Of course the big drama this season will be without a doubt with the new residents of Wisteria Lane. Was that their son that strangled Julie? Oh yeah, and the whole Brie and Carl thing is just plain weird.

Let me say that it’s entirely possible that this is a wild overreaction by me. Sometimes thing

Let me say that it’s entirely possible that this is a wild overreaction by me. Sometimes things just hit you at a certain time and make you so annoyed.

However, I don’t think this is one of those things.

So I’m watching the season premiere “Desperate Housewives” Sunday night. I know it’s a silly show with ridiculous storylines, but the writing is awesome, Eva Longoria Parker is just smoking hot (as is Teri Hatcher, still), and it entertains me.

So one of the new plot points this season is that Lynette Scavo, Felicity Huffman’s character, is pregnant with twins. Lynette has four other children with her husband Tom, and she’s somewhere in her early 40s. She and Tom have, like, no money; their pizzeria cost them a ton, and now Tom’s in school while Lynette is the only one working.

So the episode starts and Tom and Lynette are talking about the craziness of having more children. Tom (whose character has always been the weakest on the show, IMO) tries to reassure Lynette, tells her everything is going to be fine. For most of the episode, Lynette is depressed and worried and not really at all interested in having more kids.

And yet, never, ever, ever, in the entire episode, is the subject of Lynette having an abortion even implied, hinted at, or even brought up as a topic between Lynette and Tom.

OF COURSE she’s going to have the baby, because everyone wants babies! Even if you’re in your early 40s, have four kids already, have no money and are drowning in debt, it’s still awesome to have two more kids. Yippee!

Why is abortion never even brought up? Because, my friends, it is apparently still considered such a toxic issue that no mainstream show dare go near it. My goodness, ABC might lose some advertisers, draw protests, inflame the right wing who could boycott the show. A woman even discussing having an abortion on a show? We can’t have that. No, no, no. We must present reality only one way, and avoid offending anyone, anyone out there who may watch us.

Never mind the fact that abortion is legal in this country. Never mind the fact that Roe vs. Wade is almost four decades old. Never mind the fact that for millions of women each day, a decision on whether or not to abort a fetus is a heart-wrenching, real-life issue.

Look, I’m not sitting here advocating abortion, though I am definitely pro-choice. And I’m not saying the writers of the show are stupid for not making Lynette have one.

I just think it’s remarkably pathetic and cowardly that shows like this completely ignore this side of the discussion, and quite frankly treat the audience like morons by ignoring that elephant in the room.

This is why I laugh riotously when people are always accusing Hollywood of being “liberal.” The people in Hollywood may be liberal, but the shows? So far from it.

Anyway, this annoyed me.

*** Here’s something awesome: Apparently police in Lakeland, Fla. did a little Wii playing while performing a drug raid on a house (As my wife would say: Why does this stuff always happen in Florida?)

My favorite part of this is the sheriff trying to justify things. Brilliant.

The Husband:

And now my weekly recap of ABC’s blatantly female-focused melodramas, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters:

How is it that a show known for its huge sweeps episodes and mystery-exploding finales can come up with a season premiere that doesn’t really feel like anything? With Desperate Housewives, it’s pretty much that aside from a well managed but mostly unnecessary flashback structure (pretty much designed to let you know immediately who Mike chose to marry) and a very brief start of a new neighborhood mystery, it was pretty much just picking up where we left off last season. And aside from the wedding (which starts and ends the episode), no time has actually passed, progressing only through some quick leaps throughout the eight weeks between last season’s finale and the Mike/Susan wedding.

Oh…yeah…Mike picked Susan over Katherine. And this is the absolute best choice from a purely storytelling standpoint. Admit it — we were all done with Susan’s love problems and her will-they-or-won’t-they with Mike, and Katherine’s story was completely static. This way, Susan can try out a new type of story and see how it fits, and Katherine, raging against Mike and Susan for their betrayal, finally gets a storyline that can bring out the fire she was completely lacking last season. Instead of a pushover just hoping that her new fiancé won’t fall back in love with his ex-wife, this new Katherine fights back, intercepting Susan’s wedding dress and threatening to stain it with pasta sauce, playing mind games with their respective friends, and ultimately blackmailing Susan into apologizing during the damned wedding ceremony. But all is not forgiven, and Katherine’s final moment, when she whispers to Susan that the apology didn’t really help, is the best Dana Delaney has been since the climax of her season 4 mystery.

But the rest of it, as is up to par with the majority of DH’s episodes, is full of stories of wildly varying quality. I find no pleasure in any bit of Bree’s story with her affair with Karl, and I can honestly say that at this point I find anything Orson does far more interesting and sympathetic than any Bree story. I just can’t bring myself to care, and the affair is clearly not meant to last. Let’s see if Marc Cherry and the writers can, perhaps, give Orson another mystery revolving around those three years in prison we never really saw.

Lynette’s story is considerably dark for the Scavo family — and yes, I’m aware that their story last year involved a nightclub fire that resulted in a major death — as she deals with the twins that are on their way, her fifth and sixth child. After tearing into the happiness of a new mother at the doctor’s office, she admits to her husband that she is just really not feeling right about what is currently happening, as with these twins she doesn’t feel like she loves them as she did with all of her previous (and all unplanned) pregnancies. We’ve already seen the woman find a balance between her family life and her desire to reestablish her career over the last couple seasons, but this could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Will we finally deal with a major abortion storyline on this show? Probably not, considering how gigantic the show is all across the board, as well as the fact that this isn’t Maude.

And as I expressed interest at the end of last season in Gaby’s new storyline that has the Solis family taking care of a free-spirited and nasty teenage niece, that plot is pretty much progressing as I expected. Some of it is fascinating in the way that Gaby sees a great deal of her younger self in her niece and therefore wants to help her to avoid years of suffering and unhappiness, but some of it is also embarrassingly melodramatic and pointlessly cruel — the nightclub scene where Gaby gets on the mic and embarrasses her niece for sneaking out of the house went absolutely nowhere. But Gaby works best when she has a worthy opponent, so I’m not going to be too picky for a few more weeks.

Drea De Matteo: here to fuck up your shit.

And yes, that new mystery — Drea De Matteo (of The Sopranos), her husband (Jeffrey Nordling from last season of 24) and their son have moved onto Wisteria Lane, they had to move because of something the son did, Drea has a major burn/scar on the majority of her back, and somebody strangled young Julie at the end of the episode. But it wasn’t much establishment for how much I think we are meant to care.

As usual, the world of Brothers & Sisters fits more into the real world and, you know, generally believable situations. (It helps that it doesn’t pretend it’s a comedy like DH does.) And unlike DH, this felt like a real season premiere. Big emotions, big secrets, big starts and even potentially terminal illnesses abound in our return to the Walker Clan.

As Holly and Nora prepare for Justin and Rebecca’s engagement party, the two (as usual) clash, which comes to a boil when the soiree must be moved to Chez Walker after an influx of termites. There, Holly oversteps her boundaries during the party-planning while Nora has to deal with her and Saul’s aggressively insulting mother (Marion Ross from Happy Days), and it all comes to a head when Holly breaks the rules and buys the happy couple a new car, leading Nora to oust Holly as “that disease-ridden tramp” that her late husband was banging for decades (and, you know, the mother of Justin’s fiancée who was once thought to be the Missing Walker). It’s another Walker Clusterfuck, but come on…Holly had it coming.

Justin, meanwhile, is losing his mind to stress thanks to a one-two punch. First, he is called into the Dean’s office and told that if he wants to stay in the med program, he needs to seriously up his grades all across the board. Second, he finds out that he was admitted to the school not because of his grades (which weren’t great), but because his Senator brother-in-law made a few phone calls. But by the end, Justin and Rebecca have stopped bickering, he has vowed to stop being a quitter, and then they almost get into a car accident. (Whatever.)

Kevin and Scotty get a big plot boost in their mission to adopt a child, focusing on the emotions involved far more than the details of the adoption itself. (Really, how many times have we seen a TV show delve into that story and think it’s being informative by letting us know all of the steps we already know because we watch so much television?) The heart of the story lies in Scotty’s hesitation in expanding the family, a character twist instead of a plot twist, and I am grateful for that. Kevin and Scotty are still probably the most realistic gay couple on television (seriously, I’m hard-pressed to find another, although Modern Family may prove its ability to join this distinction) and I’m glad that they can talk like adults about adult issues. Besides, the story gave me the only two quotes I wrote down the entire night.

“Which one of you gets to sleep with the egg lady?” — Grandma Marion Ross, completely missing the point of surrogacy

“How’s Assembling a Child by Tolstoy?” — Kevin to Scotty regarding the gigantic manual they received from their adoption counselor

But all this interest had to take a backseat to the big sad center. While Kitty and Senator Robert go to couples therapy to deal with that douche from Eli Stone making Kitty all weak in the knees, she finds that there is something wrong with her lymph nodes, and that the news isn’t good. The episode ended without declaring what the potentially terminal disease was, but we have to go with cancer, right? My wife, just based on me describing the episode, says lymphoma, especially because it allows her to suffer but gives her the possibility of not dying, and I’m pretty sure that Nate Stone didn’t spread any HIV to her. But still, boo.

So there you have it. B&S sucked me right back in, while DH was more of the same (although a vast improvement over last season’s first handful of episodes).
