By accident I discovered the Pacemaker website and since they offerd a free download of their software I decided to give it a go. It’s a simple yet effective program that enables you to mix your favourite tunes into a massive club-banger.

LeeSaar dancers in February

LeeSaar The Company was established nine years ago in Israel by the actress and writer Lee Sher and dancer and choreographer Saar Harari, both of whom have been influenced by Ohad Naharin’s Gaga movement language.  Not surprisingly, Gaga has informed the company’s process and technique.  From November 18^th through 22^nd at PS 122, LeeSaar will perform Prima, an exploration of sensation, sexuality, and temptation for five performers, featuring the music “Like Something For Porno” by Felix Da Housecat.  Videos from LeeSaar’s rehearsals for Prima are on the company’s website.

Prima will be performed November 18^th through 22^nd at PS 122: 150 First Avenue at 9^th Street.  Tickets can be ordered online.

Commercial music really has been getting better lately.

The following is from a commercial from the “You” for HTC, a relatively under the radar producer of smartphones that’s a supporter of the Android Linux-based open source OS introduced as a counterpoint to the iPhone. It’s basically designed for people who, like me, perhaps like the capabilities of Apple’s products but can’t stand the culture that comes with it. (Which, of course, is centered generally on seizing control of the Earth’s governments in the name of sleek, postmodern information technology.)

HTC’s Dream was released last year, which I wish I’d known when I went to replace my phone in May. Motorola’s new Droid is the most prominent phone to pick up the Android software so far, but HTC, with the release of their Tattoo in mid-October, definitely has the classiest marketing.

The song is a House remix of Nina Simone’s classic “Sinnerman” by Felix da Housecat. (You’re right, I do feel really white typing that.) Full version here:

And for good measure, the climax of action staple/criminal John McTiernan’s Thomas Crown Affair, in which Pierce Brosnan sneaks a stolen Monet back into the Met, featuring the original “Sinnerman.” You lose something not having seen the whole movie, but still:

Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersberg, Russia

Not to be confused with the clothes shop chain, this uninspiring record shop along the bustling Nevsky Prospect street,  is a pirate-ship of stores, albeit with a treasure trove within.

Offering knock-off DVDs and video-games in one room, and CDs (most of which are pirated copies)  in another, the shop on the whole has little of interest to anyone with more than a passing interest in music.  We had entered the shop, browsed the racks with disdain and were turning to leave as I spied the store’s single redeming feature.

A bargain bin offering legit CDs at 30 roubles (59p) grabbed my attention, with it’s pile of Fabric mixes sitting near the top of the pile.  I sort through the lot and find Fabric 25 Mixed By Carl Craig (a classic techno/ house mix with tracks from Kerri Chandler, Scott Grooves and, err, The Pasta Boys), along with Fabric 26 mixed by Global Communication (aka Tom Middleton & Mark Pritchard).

Beneath a dirge of R&B compilations, I find another mix entitled ‘Elektrik 02′, a double disc outing from King Unique and Nubreed,  filled with goodies from Modeselektor, Claude Von Stroke, Steve Bug, Booka Shade, Felix Da Housecat, Thomas Schumacher, Milton Jackson… I could go on.  The shop, despite its lack of character, ambience, or selection, is on is way to becoming legendary.

The last CD I discover, at the very bottom of the bin, is Moby’s 2008 album, Last Night – a homage to the disco and house tracks of the early ’90s, when the bald headed leftie was still making his name.  The album got lukewarm reviews on its release in 2008, but I think it was under-rated and, as a concept album, work wells.

As I take my armful of CDs to the counter and hand them to the grimacing clerk at the till (who is fashioning the kind of vacant expression made famous by American teenagers), I remind myself that sometimes the best purchases are in the worst shops.  And with that depressing manta, I lay down the cash and give the attentdant a genuine, unreturned, smile.

A ver, que no he entendido nada del vídeo y además me he mareado con el replay. Felix Da Housecat ha sacado vídeo nuevo, y es una paranoia de montaje total. Friday, Bulent y Johnny Makeup van a un club donde pincha Felix, y lo raptan, para después atarlo y amordazarlo con unas luces de navidad, en un espacio donde ya hay otros amordazados y una bailarina de streeptease dando unos pases de baile con cuerdas en los pies. Luego Friday y Bulent se marchan tan anchos, y no se sabe nada más de Johnny Makeup que es uno de los protas del inicio, y cuyo personaje parecía el más interesante al principio por lo de la peluca y las gafas de pasta blanca…

Cette nuit à Paris avait lieu la première Nuit Electro au Grand Palais… Au programme: Birdy Nam Nam, Etienne de Crecy, Surkin , Felix Da Housecat, Mondkopf… se sont succédés aux platines de 18h à 6h du matin !

L’événement s’est d’ailleurs également déroulé au Showcase, où des concerts Electro-Rock étaient proposés de 19h à 22h30 (Naïve New Beaters, Pony Pony Run Run et We Have Band)

Along with my production partner we did 4 gigs on the Scandinavian leg of the Radio Soulwax Tour, and to be honest I don’t remember that much from those gigs.

I remember Headman being the nicest guy. I remember Boys Noize being all German and peeved off with us playing him back-to-start and claiming we played too hard prior to him going on (lightweight!), and I remember Justice being the biggest pricks in the world! Yes it’s true – take it from someone who’s spend time with them – they are exactly the big, arrogant, french twats as they appear in “A Cross The Univers”!

What I do remember clearly is the havoc created by the brothers Dewaele aka Soulwax aka 2ManyDJs, and the crowds looking exactly as they do, from the booth, in the picture above amongst the stack of CD’s and 12inches virtually flying around the booth (although there’s still some distance to Jeff Mills!).

While the world await their forthcoming new Soulwax album – here’s 4′19″mins. of 2ManyDJs creating havoc on Felix Da Housecat’s monumental – “Elvi$” – with Stephen and David doing what they do best……editing the f*** out of Felix, leaving all the best parts and throwing in some Human League for good measure.

Aí o Hell pegou o tal trecho, eliminou o pedaço que fazia referência a Felix e usou numa música de seu disco mais recente.

A baixaria tá solta. Felix essa foto simpática de Hell e publicou em seu site. Ouça os trechos e tire suas conclusões. Nem Hell nem Diddy se pronunciaram sobre o assunto ainda.

Danstónlistardrama í gangi þessa dagana en Felix da Housecat hefur ásakað DJ Hell um að nota raddupptökur frá sér án leyfis. Hell hefur svarað fyrir sig og segist hafa fengið grænt ljós frá Pudd Daddy (sem þenur raddbönd sín skemmtilega í umræddu lagi). Vonandi leysa þessir reynsluboltar þennan ágreining sinn, en sama hvernig það fer er umrædd accapella alger klassík eins og við höfum áður minnst á hér á dansidans.

Not long to go until the next Wonky and I canny wait. There’s going to be some small changes here and there plus some amazing decor and lighting by artist Fraser Cook which will change from month to month, with pieces being added and developed for each new Wonky.

‘Sometimes’ by Les Rythmes Digitales (AKA Stuart Price) is a track that was way ahead of it’s time when it was released on the album ‘Darkdancer’ back in 1999. It’s a pure synth-pop track with an 80s feel (maybe that’s cos Nik Kershaw is on vocals?!) yet still sounds fresh today…. and it’s pretty addictive. Most of you will know Stuart Price’s work through his other acts Thin White Duke, Jacques Lu Cont and Zoot Woman, but if you haven’t heard this one album then try and get hold of a copy, it’s so much better than most of the electro-pop around today.
