EVA.EME: Not a backpack-underground-rapper. She reps Cuernavaca.

I didn’t want to edit this video too much, I wanted you to see the off-the-cuff Eva.Eme (pronounced Eva Punto Eme).

In Mexico, these days, it seems like everyone raps.
Over the summer I had a chance to meet 21-year-old MC Eva.Eme in her home town of Cuernavaca, Morelos. That of course is a written rhyme in the video above, but what I’m impressed with more about her is her love for the music and its energy. She sacrifices a lot, and given shady biz in the industry, people who rap on stage almost always do it for the love and not the bread, because you just don’t cake like that. Check out her group.

At this point in her career, she’s working a day job, trying to play clubs on weekends, and to my surprise has to suffer abuse from her mother just to go rock a mic. Eva showed me a scar on her wrist from her mother wilding out on her for coming home too late after a show. Drama. But that’s the life of an early 20s Mexican girl/rapper.
I’ll have a more thorough profile written for you later. I just wanted to get this video online for people to see. And yes, fans, hip-hop is alive and well in Mexico…but like anything, it needs a little work. If Eva keeps working on her bars, no telling where she might take her rhyming skills.

Als ich mir dieses Lied anhörte, fragte mein Mitbewohner, der sonst nur Damien Rice hört, wer das denn sei, und sagte, dass es ihm sehr gefalle und er es haben wolle. Can female rappers make a comeback?

In the early days of hip-hop, female emcees rocked the mic with their male counterparts. Roxanne Shante, The Real Roxanne, MC Lyte and Queen Latifah were just some of the few fem-cees who managed to hang with the boys and also flip their own styles. Then in the 90’s female rap splintered off, creating two separate but distinct factions. On the one hand, there were the Foxy Brown’s and Lil’ Kim’s of the world, who expressed more sexuality in their rhymes than most had been used to and then there was Lauryn Hill who paired hip-hop and R&B like a fine white wine and seared salmon. But then, like a scene out of a bad Sci-Fi channel movie, all of the fem-cees disappeared.

Recently, famed underground lyricist Jean Grae posted her verses for sale on Craigslist. For $800, Jean Grae would spit a hot 16 on a beat CD, tape, MP3 or what ever form of media you’d like to have her rap on. Foxy Brown, who was supposed to be welcomed back into the rap game after serving a bid, reportedly missed her show date and effectively canned her own career. It’s been more than five years since Foxy dropped her last album and in that time a lot about rap music and the music biz have changed significantly. Competition not only surrounds artists on release day, but blogs and fan sites can make, break or resurrect careers.

Given these facts, does it make sense for the female wordsmiths of yesteryear to keep on spitting? We all saw what happened to Amil. One day she was there, the next day there’s rumors that she’s flipping burgers at Burger King. According to the Internet, Lauryn Hill is stark raving mad and her live shows vary from her channeling spirits to slaughtered versions of her own songs. Of course, all these things have to be taken with a grain of salt, because the blogging media loves to throw salt wherever it can. After all, that’s part of the fun.

But just as the fem-cee world splintered off into two parts with Lil’Kim, Foxy and Lauryn, it’s split again, this time creating a new section of artists like Kid Sister, M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. While some of these artists, particularly Kid Sister and M.I.A. skew more to the hipster side of things, Nicki Minaj, is resurrecting that style of hardcore fem-cee rap that has made artists from the mid-90’s so popular. Even though these rappers are relatively untested, it’s going to be interesting to see whether or not they can make it at a time where the female rap voice is so quiet.

She was worth every bead of sweat: at a quarter to midnight, Foxy Brown took the stage in the designer’s hot pink mini-dress, telling the roaring crowd, “They put me in jail for a year and my cell was full of Alexander Wang,” before rapping hits like “Candy,” “Get You Home”, “What’s Your Fantasy” and “Hot Spot.”

Turns out Brown was celebrating more than her self-described “good friend” Wang’s collection: it was also her birthday.

“When he asked me to perform and told me it was going to be Sept. 6, I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to give you that!’” she laughed after her half hour set. Don’t expect to see her all over the front rows in the coming days. “I don’t whore myself out for fashion.” And though it was her first performance since her release from jail earlier this year, Brown didn’t suffer from any stage fright.

“I’m a beast on the microphone,” she declared, as a VH1 television crew filmed her for an upcoming reality show. “I was more nervous about busting my ass in these six inch Yves Saint Laurent heels.

Nicht sooo gut gelaufen für Terror Squads frühere first lady.
Sie ist nämlich gerade zu acht Jahren Bau verknackt worden, weil sie im Juli 2007 eine Frau zweimal umgeballert und schwer verwundet hat. Schätze, damit muß man wohl rechnen, wenn man sowas tut.

Selbst wenn sie Einspruch erheben sollte – der Richter Rena Uviller hat ziemlich eindeutig klargemacht,
daß er sie nicht als Rapperin verurteilt hat, sondern als eine Frau, die keine Verantwortung für ihre Taten trägt. Die ganze Geschichte kannst du hier, bei AHH.com lesen (englisch), oder, wenn du dem englisch nicht

Schätze, es ist überflüssig zu erwähnen, daß a) ihre Karriere spätestens jetzt komplett tschö sein dürfte,
und die groß angekündigte Hochzeit mit Rapperkollegen Papoose wohl eher auch nicht stattfindet.
Warum erinnert mich das alles nur an diesen Song?
