Informazioni su dove dormire, cosa visitare e come muoversi a Berlino.

Pochi giorni fa il mio amico Andrea Orsini mi ha chiesto informazioni su Berlino. Questo post è dedicato a lui e a tutte le altre persone che desiderano fare un bel viaggetto in questa città.

Dove dormire a Berlino:

Quando si decide di viaggiare uno dei primi quesiti che ci poniamo è: “Qual è il posto migliore in cui poter pernottare spendendo il giusto? Albergo o ostello?”. Per questo mi sono un po’ informata e ho scoperto che l’ostello Jetpak City Hostel di Berlino gode di un’ottima reputazione, sia per il suo rapporto qualità-prezzo, sia per la pulizia della sua struttura che per la sua doppia posizione, una nel centro della città e una più decentrata rispetto a Berlino.

Un altro albergo di Berlino recensito molto positivamente è l’Hotel Otto. Albergo a 4 stelle nel centro di Berlino, l’Hotel Otto offre camere standard, comfort, studio e suite. Per coloro che sono alla ricerca di soluzioni low-cost la camera standard è sicuramente quella più indicata (80 euro a notte).

Come muoversi a Berlino:

Per chi desidera muoversi per Berlino senza spendere una fortuna la soluzione migliore è quella di acquistare una Berlin WelcomeCard. Questa tessera consente di utilizzare tutti i mezzi pubblici della città e di usufruire di sconti fino al 50% su oltre 140 offerte per musei, attrazioni, spettacoli, club e ristoranti.

Cosa visitare a Berlino:

Dopo una non-breve documentazione ho raccolto un po’ di informazioni su cosa è consigliabile visitare quando si fa un viaggio a Berlino.

Uno dei primi posti da visitare sicuramente è la Porta di Brandeburgo, monumento simbolo della città. Sovrastata dalla Quadriga della Vittoria, la Porta di Brandeburgo era il punto dal quale iniziava il celebre Muro di Berlino.

La visita di Berlino può poi continuare percorrendo la storica strada della città, la Unter den Linden,  su cui si trovano numerosi luoghi di interesse tra cui il Museo della Fondazione Guggenheim, la Neue Wache, il Teatro dell’Opera e la famosa piazza di Bebelplatz nel quartiere Mitte, luogo in cui è esposto un pannello luminoso, dedicato al rogo di libri avvenuto per mano dei nazisti nel 1933.

La visita del quartiere Mitte si conclude nell’Alexander Platz, una delle piazze più celebri della parte orientale di Berlino. In questa piazza sorge il famoso Berliner Fernsehturm, la torre della televisione, uno di quei luoghi che, a detta di molti, non ci si può lasciar scappare se si visita Berlino. Il Fernsehturm, alto 368 metri, è facilmente visibile da tutti i distretti centrali di Berlino e, ad un’altezza di 207 metri, ospita un ristorante panoramico che ruota di 360° ogni mezz’ora.

Una tappa imperdibile durante una visita a Berlino è il Reichstag, il palazzo del Parlamento, e la sua cupola di vetro costruita dall’architetto Sir Norman Foster.

Per chi invece fosse interessato allo shopping, Friedrichstrasse, nei quartieri Mitte e Kreuzberg, è il centro nevralgico berlinese ideale per gli acquisti.

Sono inoltre numerosi i musei offerti dalla città di Berlino. Eccone alcuni:

Jüdisches Museum: è un museo di Berlino interamente dedicato alla storia degli ebrei. Il museo raccoglie duemila anni di storia e cultura ebraica.

Il suo creatore, Liebeskind, battezzò il progetto del museo “between the lines” (tra le linee) facendo riferimento al difficile percorso della storia ebraico-tedesca. La struttura del museo, infatti, occupa due edifici: uno già esistente, il barocco Berlin-Museum o Kollegienhaus, e uno contemporaneo, avanguardista, complesso e sorprendente quanto angosciante, costruito appositamente per ospitare il museo.

DDR Museum: è uno dei musei più interattivi d’Europa. Piccolo ma originale ed insolito, il DDR Museum permette ai suoi visitatori di toccare circa un migliaio gli oggetti allestiti al suo interno e raggruppati per temi come la famiglia, il tempo libero e la scuola

Bauhaus Archiv Museum für Gestaltung: è il museo del design di Berlino. Esso contiene la più grande raccolta al mondo di documenti sulla storia e sulla funzione svolta dal Bauhaus tra cui modelli, progetti e disegni architettonici, complementi d’arredo, stanze, mobili.

MauerMuseum (o “Museum am Checkpoint Charlie!”) è un museo ricco di documenti, foto, video e oggetti che ricordano le centinaia di persone che il 9 novembre 1989 (giorno della caduta del Muro di Berlino), a bordo delle proprie Trabant, attraversarono il famigerato posto di blocco “checkpoint Charlie” per raggiungere la zona ovest della città.

Inoltre, un luogo molto interessante da visitare ritengo sia la East Side Gallery, ovvero 1,3 km di tracciato del muro di Berlino completamente ricoperto da graffiti riguardanti il tema della pace e della libertà, realizzati da numerosi artisti.

Spero di avervi dato delle informazioni utili.

Visitate Berlino anche per me!

Tempelhof Airport, Tegel Airport, MediaSpree, Gazometer, Marx-Engels Forum, Gleisdreieck…many plots of land are in the middle of something in Berlin. The Local investigates some of the “deals” and reasons opposing citizens and business (with the city’s government somewhere in between).

Berlin stokes foreign investor land rush

Berlin is a roomy place but investors from Britain and the US have come to see the German capital as fertile ground for a cheap property deal. Ben Knight finds out how much of the city’s  is left for Exberliner magazine.

Tarhilo Sarrazin does not need any help making himself unpopular in Berlin. The city-state’s former finance minister caused a media stink last month by calling Berliners un-intellectual and lazy, and blaming the city’s history of government subsidisation on a collectively careless mentality. But perhaps his entertainingly bigoted remarks are not his worst disservice to Berlin. His time in power was characterised by a zeal for balancing the city’s books, and in pursuit of this he left few sources of revenue unexplored.

Selling land as public policy

For Sarrazin, the city’s real estate was an obvious asset to exploit, and plenty of Berlin politicians noticed his reckless policy. Klaus-Dieter Gröhler, local councillor for Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf, says, “Berlin should not just market plots of land to stop gaps in the budget. That is not sustainable.” Ephraim Gothe, councillor for town development in Mitte, agrees, “Sarrazin usually forced through unconditional sales.” This policy left the city with little control over its own development.

Councillors for individual districts like Gröhler and Gothe are not idealists who champion the freedom of public property. They just found themselves protecting their district interests against Sarrazin’s finance department, eager to sell off land for any supermarket chain that will have it. “I don’t have anything against privatising land in principle, but the state should keep back some of the money – maybe 20 or 25 percent – to buy other land that it might need,” says Gröhler.

But Sarrazin is of course no longer in office, and Gröhler is still cautious about his successor, Ulrich Nussbaum. “He hasn’t been in office long enough; we’ll just have to wait and see,” he says.

The Marx Engels Forum

That Sarrazin’s influence has finally ended can be seen in the case of the Marx-Engels-Forum, the open park to the west of the TV Tower, where a bronze Karl Marx sits with Friedrich Engels at his shoulder, amid reliefs depicting happy life in socialist society. The small park was opened in the mid-eighties, and the ruling party of communist East Germany, the SED, was closely involved in its design. Earlier this year, it was reported that the city wanted to sell this prime piece of central Berlin. According to the papers, Sarrazin thought the sale of the park would be “particularly lucrative” for the city. Like the Palast der Republik, the famous building on the other side of the river that once housed the East German parliament, the Marx-Engels-Forum is emotionally associated with Berlin’s East German past, and like the Palast (whose demolition was completed earlier this year), it appeared doomed.

But the plan to sell the property has now officially been abandoned, for different reasons. Regula Lüscher, construction director of the city Department for Urban Development, maintains that the change of plans was the result of a change of course that marked her appointment. Lüscher decided not to execute plans of her predecessor, the publicly decorated Hans Stimmann, Berlin’s construction director from 1991-1996 and 1999–2006, who is infamous for the Prussian style he imposed on the city (and the Alexa shopping centre!). Stimmann wanted to build a small medieval village on the site, also with a free space – a kind of re-creation of the historical birth of the city of Berlin, which was founded in the area. “I’ve nothing against re-designing it, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to reconstruct medieval structures there. The area will be re-designed from 2012 onwards, but it will remain an open space for the public,” Lüscher says.

Straightforward as this sounds, financial drawbacks probably also played a part in the decision not to develop the Marx-Engels-Forum. It turned out that the land, which was an inner city residential quarter before the war, originally belonged to more than 50 other parties, including Jewish families whose property was confiscated by the Nazi regime. If the land had been sold and turned into a building site, those parties would have had compensation rights, and the project would have cost more than the city could make from it. “This probably had something to do with the fact that the city decided not to sell,” confirmed a spokeswoman for the Liegenschaftsfonds Berlin, the private marketing agency that the city uses to sell its property.

A historical template

But although Berlin has lost its chance to have a fake medieval village, Lüscher does intend to re-develop the entire city centre according to a historical template. The tip of this archaeological iceberg will be the Stadtschloss, a reconstruction of Berlin’s central imperial castle, the residence of Prussian kings and German kaisers, on the site of the Palast der Republik. The guiding principle of Lüscher’s vision for the historical city centre, stretching out south and east from the Stadtschloss to the river, is the idea that history should not be reconstructed, but ‘uncovered’. Archaeological remains are to be dug up and displayed in between modern apartment blocks. “It is meant to be the renaissance of the city centre. It is meant to bring the population of Berlin back into the centre … And at the same time we want to remind people that this was the birthplace of the city.”

All this means extensive privatisation, of course, as well as infrastructural re-development – widening or narrowing roads, and extending public transport services (a tram line is even intended for the area). The Urban Development department organises architect competitions to see what form the development will take. One recently concluded competition is the Luisenblock Ost, where a new office block is being planned near Friedrichstraße.

Berlin’s fiscal constraints mean that the project must be ‘cost-neutral’ – in other words, the state parliament has ordered that the sale of properties in the area has to fund the infrastructural upgrades.

Privatisation of the Spree bank

Extensive privatisation by way of large-scale projects has drawn passionate opposition from the population. The most high-profile of these schemes is the Mediaspree investment project, the colonisation of nearly four kilometres on both sides of the Spree in the east of the city by a horde of media corporations.

Part of the plan has already been realised with the O2-World Arena, which at the moment is still standing in the middle of sprawling wasteland, but will be nestled in a forest of new buildings within the next five years. Two 200-plus-room hotels will be built in the area to host the extra visitors that the immense venues will bring. One, the seven-floor Hotel Spreeport, will take up the area now occupied by the Maria am Ostbahnhof nightclub. The fashion centre Labels II Berlin is a collection of fashion showrooms about to open between the offices of Universal and MTV. Puma, Camel Lifestyle und s.Oliver are among the labels that have rented space in the centre. Despite the global financial crisis, space has also been rented in many of the unfinished office buildings. The entire project is meant to create 30,000 jobs, at least according to urban development minister Ingeborg Junge-Reyer, and as much as €3 billion are being invested. The parts of Mediaspree that have already been built – the offices of Universal, MTV, the Verdi trade union and the O2-World – are estimated to have already created some 15,000 jobs.

Citizens against corporations

A movement calling itself Mediaspree Versenken (‘Sink the Mediaspree’) succeeded in forcing a district referendum last year, the results of which showed that locals were against the plans. But the city, represented by Junge-Reyer, did its best to ignore these results, and went ahead with guaranteeing investors planning permission. The authorities claimed that to sink the project would cost the city €165 million in damages, a figure disputed by Mediaspree Versenken. The referendum only managed to force some alterations to the plans, mainly in order to create public access to the river and adequate open space, which has now been ensured. One building at the Elsen Bridge is still in debate, as is the height and density of certain projected buildings at the Schilling Bridge, but the rest is now apparently beyond revision. Manfred Kühne, project manager at the Department for Urban Development, gave the Tagesspiegel a telling quote earlier this year: “The discussion around the citizens’ initiative has awoken the false impression that projects could be endangered.”

For Mediaspree Versenken, the construction of a row of media buildings along the river would waste the chance to create a social and recreational area, and would be another nail in the coffin of the improvisational element of Berlin culture – represented by Bar 25, the bar, nightclub and performance venue that grew out of a makeshift beach bar on the river bank. Despite its commercial success, Bar 25 has been forced to close to make way for new plans: Berlin’s waste disposal service BSR owns the and would like to sell it for around €31 million. So far, no buyer has been found. For Lüscher, establishments like Bar 25 should be recognised as only a transitory stage in the capital investment of an area.

“These temporary utilisations of space are of course wonderful, but they are also a kind of privatisation. One should be aware of that. I think it’s great that you have these beach bars, and they do enliven the area. They are pioneers of space, if you like – they find spaces in the city and use them – and that is a very important stage in the development of the city, but I think that in the future authorities should take more care to manage these temporary utilisations.” In other words, improvised businesses like Bar 25 should in the future be regulated by a state-appointed land management company, which draws up contracts that say how long a bar or a nightclub will be allowed to last.

These ‘temporary utilisations’ have been the flashpoints of the struggle between the privatisation of Berlin’s real estate and the free, improvisational culture that many believe attracts people to Berlin. For Lüscher, who does not recognise any fundamental difference between these two forms of privatisation, but does accept the importance of encouraging independent businesses to get a chance to develop an area, the best compromise would be the implementation of a system to manage plots of public land after they are sold. The new land management system would take care of drawing up temporary contracts with the businesses of a designed area. This, apparently, is the plan for Berlin’s next great private development project -the Tempelhof airfield.

Fotos sagen mehr als tausend Worte. Mit etwas Glück und Geduld lassen sich darauf magische Momente festhalten – ja, sogar für die Ewigkeit konservieren. Das macht die Faszination aus!

Auf Berlin-Reisen übt der Fernsehturm im Herzen der Stadt eine magische Anziehungskraft auf mich aus. Zwischen den mehrstöckigen Gebäuden ragt er wie ein Leuchtturm gen Himmel empor. Aus verschiedenen Himmelsrichtungen betrachtet und in die verschiedenen Umgebungen eingebettet, stellt er ein abwechslungsreiches und immer spannendes Fotomotiv dar.

And then, after Dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant called Monsieur Wong and ice cream at Häagen Dasz we went home.

Heute ging es mit dem Buch: “Dresdner Elbhang- Wanderführer für Kinder” von Kristin Eckhardt auf Wanderung in den Zachengrund, Wachwitzgrund, zur Wachbergschenke, Fernsehturm, Agneshöhe und über Pappritz zurück. Bis auf die Agneshöhe kannten wir die Runde schon und wir können von zu Hause loslaufen. Aber jedes mal erlebt man neue Abenteuer und die Agneshöhe ist auf jeden Fall ein Besuch wert. Zuerst haben wir den “Traumzauberbaum”, oder das Naturdenkmal (Bild rechts oben) bewundert. Dann haben wir im Zachengrund matschige Füße bekommen. Dort ist der Wanderweg sehr urwaldmäßig und abenteuerlich. Im Wachwitzgrund wirds dann einfacher. Oben an der Wachwitzschnänke hat man das erste Mal ein schönen Blick nach Dresden. Am Fernsehturm (warum ist der denn immer noch zu?) vorbei kommt man mit Hilfe von Hinweisschildern ohne Probleme zur Agneshöhe. Dort hat man nicht nur einen herrlichen Blick nach Dresden, sondern auch elbaufwärts Richtung Pillnitz. Bei schönen Wetter macht es natürlich besonders viel Spaß. Mein Tipp für Dresdner: die Tour mal ausprobieren.

wenn wir schon mal in Berlin sind, und schönes Wetter ist… Da haben wir gedacht, wir können  ja mal auf den Berliner Fernsehturm, wie zu DDR Zeiten muss man sicher nicht mehr anstehen. Leider haben wir uns ganz schön geirrt. 1,5h Wartezeit, um für 14 € pro Person einmal hochzufahren, das war uns entschieden zu teuer.

So, langsam kehrt in Casa Tuffelchen Ruhe ein und da nutze ich doch die Gelegenheit Euch vom letzten Wochenende in Berlin zu erzählen.

Dass der Start ins Wochenende etwas chaotisch war werden die meisten noch mitbekommen haben. L. war am Wochenende ohnehin nicht da um sich um die Katzen bzw. speziell um Teddy zu kümmern und C. war leider plötzlich krank. Sie hätte es zwar trotzdem gemacht, aber ich wollte ihr den Stress dann nicht auch noch zumuten.

Zum Glück sind S. und L. eingesprungen. Einiges andere lief auch noch schief, Teddy ging es schlechter….  jedenfalls bin ich erst mit Verspätung überhaupt aus dieser Stadt rausgekommen. Jedenfalls hab ich mich dann erstmal auf den Weg zu einem schönen gemütlichen Abend in Hamburg bei Simplynili.

Da haben wir dann erstmal Pizza gefutter, Wein getrunken und geratscht und getrascht… wie sich das eben für einen Weiberabend gehört *g*

Am nächsten Morgen haben wir uns dann auf den Weg nach Berlin gemacht. Dort sind wir dann erstmal standesgemäß ins Alexa zum Shopping geflitzt. Hach war das schön….  da möchte ich einen Tag mit unterschrieben Blankoschecks losziehen

 Danach ging es dann weiter zu Rachel. Da gab es dann erstmal lecker Kaffee und einen ordentlichen Weiberplausch. Leider waren unsere Häkelschweine noch nicht da. Aber die hol ich dann in drei Wochen ab!

Am Abend haben wir uns dann unterm Fernsehturm mit Evo getroffen. Eigentlich wollten wir ja das Festival of Lights gucken, aber es war noch nicht dunkel genug. Nebenbei  hab ich dann erfahren, dass das ein guter Platz ist um sich von fremden Kerlen anquatschen zu lassen. Ich glaub ich stell mich das nächste Mal ein paar Stunden da hin und gucke was kommt. Vielleicht findet sich da ja ein Grund nach Berlin zu ziehen *lach*

Naja, wir sind dann weitergezogen zum Kubaner unseres Vertrauens und hatten wieder mega viel Spaß dort. Bei dem Kubaner sind alle Wände und sogar die Decke beschrieben mit allem möglichen. Man findet eigentlich nicht mal mehr ein Fleckchen wo noch irgendwas hinpasst. Aber wir haben eins gefunden nämlich hier:

Natürlich gibt es auch jede Menge Bilder auf denen wir vier Mädels offenbar mordsmäßig Spaß hatten. Aber da ich hier ja niemanden zeigen möchte müsst Ihr mir das einfach so glauben….  ich zeig Euch nicht mal das kubanische Leckerchen, dass da hinter der Theke steht…. aber ich kann Euch sagen…. 

Irgendwann morgens um 5 oder so lagen wir jedenfalls tatsächlich im Bettchen und nachdem wir gemütlich gefrühstückt haben mussten Simplynili und ich uns losreissen und auf den Heimweg machen.

Achja…. wir waren noch mal beim Fernsehturm wegen dem Festival…. aber da war alles dunkel… die machen tatsächlich nicht bis vier Uhr nachts *kopfschüttel*

Der nächste Trip ist inzwischen auch schon in trockenen Tüchern und ich versuch jetzt mal zur Kostenersparnis über die Mitfahrzentrale Mitfahrer zu finden… mal gucken ob das klappt!!

In Wien wird gerade der 200 Meter hohe Schlot von Block 6 des Kraftwerks Simmering abgerissen. Eine Sprengung stand nicht zur Debatte, weil die Autobahn zu nah ist und auch in die anderen Richtungen zu wenig Fallraum vorhanden ist. Deswegen wurde im Inneren des Schlotes ein Bagger bis and die Spitze gehoben, der von oben beginnend jeden Tag mehr als einen Meter von der Bausubstanz abträgt. Weil diese Arbeit im Turm für Menschen zu gefährlich wäre, wird die Maschine von einer Plattform aus ferngesteuert.

Vielleicht gäbe es ja auch bei so schwierigen Abrissarbeiten Möglichkeiten, den ganzen Ablauf zu beschleunigen, auch wenn der Einsatz von Sprengstoff sich verbietet. Vielleicht aber auch nicht…

Al drie dagen ben ik undercover in het hol van de Leeuw: Berlijn. Verzamel al uw vooroordelen van Duitsers bij elkaar! Heeft u die nog niet? Dan kunt u door dit te lezen deze vooroordelen bijschaven.

Duitse jongeren kennen geen gel.

- Klopt, voor zover ik scherp heb geobserveerd ben ik de enige jongen in Berlijn die gel draagt.

Duitse meisjes dragen rare mutsen.

- Inderdaad, Check.

- Klopt ook, ik zie er hier genoeg, dus die zullen ze wel van “ons” hebben. Check.

Duitsers eten vies en vet.

- Ik heb vanochtend nog gehaktballen als ontbijt gegeten. Check.

Duitsers haten kunst en saboteren alle niet-Duitse films door de niet Duits-sprekende acteurs te dwingen toch Duits te spreken, hoe raar en verneukt dat in de film ook klinkt.

- Ik heb net nog James Bond gekeken. Ik kon het niet aan, vervolgens huilde en rendde ik naar de hobby. Laptop. En toen deze blog.

Berlin setzte auch in diesem Jahr wieder spektakuläre leuchtende Akzente. Vom 14. bis 25. Oktober 2009 erstrahlte die Hauptstadt erneut in ganz besonderem Licht. Für zwei Wochen verwandelte das FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS™ die Metropole in eine glitzernde, farbenprächtige Stadt.

Einzigartige Illuminationen und kunstvolle Projektionen auf mehr als 40 berühmten Berliner Wahrzeichen und Orten wie Brandenburger Tor, Siegessäule und Hotel Adlon Kempinski zogen vom Fernsehturm bis hin zum Funkturm ein magisches Lichterband durch die gesamte Stadt.

So hätte auch bei Deinem Besuch vor zwei Wochen auch kommen können, liebe Freidenkerin.

Er war schon Drehort, DDR-Prestigeobjekt, Ort von Trauungen und musste beweisen, dass ihm auch Pink steht. Kaum jemand kann an seinem vierzigsten Geburtstag von sich behaupten, ein derart bewegtes Leben gehabt zu haben, wie der Berliner Fernsehturm. Da ist es auch kein Wunder, dass das markanteste Gebäude Berlins schnell zur Stylikone, zum Pop-Phänomen und Markenzeichen der Hauptstadt avancierte. Die Presse aus aller Herren Länder rennt ihm darum ununterbrochen die Türe ein. Besonders in seinem Geburtstagsjahr war es deshalb selbst dem strassenfeger-Redakteur nicht möglich, fünfzehn Minuten seiner kostbaren Zeit zu ergattern. Macht nichts. Er spricht nämlich durchaus für sich selbst! Seine Geschichte ist untrennbar mit den Berlinern zu seinen Füßen verbunden und das muss, typisch für Berliner, natürlich gefeiert werden. Man widmete dem berühmten Berliner bereits einen gehäkelten Schlüsselanhänger; sein Konterfei zierte schon T-Shirts, Tassen und überhaupt alles, was sich irgendwie unter die Leute bringen lässt. Selbst Kräuterlikörflaschen, Duftflakons und Glas-Wasserpfeifen („Alex-Bong“ genannt), die seinem wohlgeformten Körper nachempfunden sind, kann man käuflich erwerben,.

Wir haben ihn zum Fressen gern
Ein Souvenir sticht aus der Masse der Vermarktungsartikel jedoch genauso hervor, wie der Turm selbst aus dem sonst eher niedrig bebauten Berlin. Die Rede ist von Philipp Beriefs (44) Ausstechformen in Gestalt des Fernsehturms. Denn

seine rote Kunststoffsilhouette ist nicht nur ein prima Hingucker für das heimische Regal, es ist zudem auch noch nützlich! Besonders um die Adventszeit herum.* Dabei ist die Tauglichkeit als Aufsteller ursprünglich gar nicht vom Erfinder angedacht worden, sondern war eher ein unerwarteter Nebeneffekt des Umstiegs von anfänglich Metall- auf Kunststoffmaterialien, wie uns der Erfinder verriet. So bekam die Form einen ebenen Boden und die Idee, die ihren Ursprung irgendwo zwischen Backpartys und den Einflüssen eines Architektenvaters hatte, einen unerwarteten Dreh. Das in einer Berliner Behindertenwerkstatt konfektionierte Produkt findet man in gut sortierten Geschenkläden und demnächst auch beim Buchhändler „Thalia“.

Dem Hype auf den Zahn gefühlt

Sein Schatten eilt ihm weit voraus

Berlins ganzer Stolz mag zwar den ganzen Tag nur steif da stehen – wenn nicht gerade der Wind seine Zipfelmütze im Leuchtturmlook 60 Zentimeter an der Spitze hin und her wiegt – aber sein Inneres versteht es, die Leute zu bewegen. Im rotierenden „Telecafé“ kann man beim Essen einen 360°-Überblick über Berlins Baustellen (Stadtschloss) und Zwischennutzungswelten (Flughafen Tempelhof) genießen. Für die einen ist die tagsüber glitzernde Kugel auf dem 200 Meter hohen Schaft Ort eines außergewöhnlichen Abendessens, für das man schon Monate im Voraus reservieren muss. Für die anderen ist er die Diskokugel aller Diskokugeln, die Krönung der Partyhauptstadt Berlin, die paradoxer Weise immer verführerischer wird, je mehr sie in die Pleite schlittert. Für Ost-Berliner dagegen, ist das „Deutsche Washington Monument“ noch immer der Beweis, dass auch ein kleines von der Außenwelt abgetrenntes Völkchen zu baulichen Meisterleistungen im Stande war. Na ja – und auch viele West-Berliner würden nur ungern auf ihr störungsfreies Digitalfernsehen verzichten.

„Nu, Genossen, da sieht man‘s ganz genau: Da gehört er hin.“ Mit diesen Worten des SED-Parteichefs Walter Ulbrichts soll der Legende nach der Startschuss für den Turm gefallen sein. Die DDR brauchte nämlich ein Repräsentationsgebäude für die junge Republik, auf dass den „Wessis“ die Augen aus den Köpfen fallen würden. Außerdem sollten die DDR-Bürger nach 15 Jahren DDR endlich auch in den Genuss des DDR-Fernsehens kommen. Am 3. Oktober 1969 war es dann endlich so weit, „Ulbrichts Gedächtniskirche“ öffnete ihre Pforten.

Vor 1989
Von den vielen Legenden der Jugendjahre des „Telespargels“ hält sich besonders wacker die von der „Rache des Papstes“. Angespielt wird dabei auf die Blechprismen der Diskokugel, die wegen ihrer Wölbung die meiste Zeit des Tages ein „Kreuz“ reflektieren. Und das, wo doch die DDR den Einfluss der Kirchen zurückdrängen wollte. Einer ungesicherten Anekdote zufolge, soll der Architekt der Kuppel deshalb von der Stasi verhört worden sein, ob dieses Kreuz denn geplant gewesen war. Angeblich soll die Debatte durch ein milde gestimmtes Regierungsmitglied mit den Worten „Das ist kein Kreuz, sondern ein ‚Plus’ für den Sozialismus!“ beendet worden sein.

Nach 1999
Der Fernsehturm, mittlerweile zu einem Symbol für das wiedervereinte Berlin geworden, diente Eberhard Gienger, Reck-Weltmeister und Sportler des Jahres 1974 und 1978, vor genau zehn Jahren als Absprungpunkt in 210 Metern Höhe. Dieser Fallschirmsprung war jedoch vergleichsweise unspektakulär für jemand, der schon mal in 2000 Metern Höhe unter Hubschraubern turnt, bevor er den Schirm öffnet. 2007 dann, wir erinnern uns noch alle, kürte die Deutsche Telekom die Turmkugel zum Wahrzeichen der Fußball-WM und steckte sie in ein rosa… sorry …magentafarbenes Tütü. Das war dann auch das Jahr, als die beliebte Kuppel des Turms in Flammen stand. Zumindest wenn man dem TV-Sender „ProSieben“ traut, der uns das Tele-Märchen „Das Inferno – Flammen über Berlin“ erzählte.

NASA Steals Berlin TV Tower

Betrachtet man die Form des Fernsehturms, kann man unschwer die Begeisterung für Raumfahrtechnik der 60er Jahre erkennen. Da wundert es auch niemanden, dass auf YouTube ein Video kursiert, das die NASA beim Start des Fernsehturms in Richtung Stratosphäre zeigt. Doch in Wirklichkeit wird so etwas natürlich nie passieren, ist es doch im – auch nach 40 Jahren immer noch höchsten Gebäude Deutschlands – schon ein Staatsgeheimnis, welches Reinigungsunternehmen die große runde Knutschkugel auf Hochglanz poliert. Man hat eben sicherheitstechnisch aus dem „Desaster“ von vor zwei Jahren gelernt. Gut so, denn dann können auch noch in Zukunft „längste Liebesbotschaften der Welt“ an „Ulbrichts Protzstängel“ angebracht werden. Wir wünschen dem Herren mit dem langen Hut in Rot-Weiß alles Gute zum Geburtstag und auf das die nächsten 40 Jahre nicht minder spannend werden!

Die Heizungsluft ließ die Nasenschleimhäute langsam den Trockenheitsgrad der Atacamawüste erreichen. Was half dagegen? Ein Ausflug! Doch wohin? Ich hatte schon fast das ganze Ruhrgebiet auf der Suche nach interessanten Fotomotiven abgegrast. Allzu weit wollte ich heute auch nicht fahren. Da fiel mir der Westfalenpark Dortmund als willkommenes Ausflugsziel ein. Schnell die Kamera gegriffen und ins Auto geschwungen.

Vor den Toren Dortmunds fand ich mich plötzlich inmitten von Autos aus allen möglichen deutschen und ausländischen Städten wieder – und alle waren geschmückt mit schwarz-gelben Devolutionalien. Ach ja – Dortmund spielte an diesem Sonntag gegen Bochum!

Nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit erreichte ich den Parkplatz und ging in den Park. Schon nach wenigen Gehminuten war der “Florian” – so der Name des Fernsehturms – erreicht. Er wurde 1959 anlässlich der Bundesgartenschau im Westfalenpark mit einer Höhe von 219,6 Metern errichtet und war zu dieser Zeit kurzzeitig das höchste Gebäude Deutschlands. Mittlerweile rangiert er auf Rang 14 der höchsten Gebäude Deutschlands.

Der Florianturm war auch eine beliebte Plattform für die Bungee-Begeisterten – der Sprungbetrieb wurde jedoch im Juli 2003 nach einem tragischen Unfall mit Todesfolge eingestellt. Ein Seil eines Springers riss und er stürzte in den Tod.

Mit dem Aufzug dauerte es weniger als eine Minute – 38 Sekunden um genau zu sein – bis die 142 Meter hohe Aussichtsplattform erreicht war. Der Ausblick war angesichts der klaren Luft fantastisch.

Prva in glavna postojanka letošnjega potepanja po Evropi je bil Berlin.

Glavno mesto Nemčije in verjetno najbolj razvpito mesto polpretekle zgodovine (Tretji rajh, Berlinski zid); mesto, ki nikoli ne spi, mesto mladih (starih ljudi praktično ne boste videli, sploh ne moških – vojni davek), odprto mesto (prestolnica gejev in Parade ljubezni), mesto, kjer mrgoli punksov (punk revolucija je potekala na osi London-New York-Berlin), mesto pasjih kakcev na ulicah. Skratka, po mnenju mnogih najbolj vibrantna in raznolika evropska prestolnica.

Ker slike povedo več kot besede, kar navalimo skozi glavnino.

Če boste v Berlinu iskal hostel, priporočam Schlafmeile – okrožje Friedrichshein (poleg Kreuzberga destinacija no. 1 za študente, turiste in žurerski vajb) ugodna cena, dostop v sobo pa kar direktno iz ulice

Alexanderplatz s TV stolpom (Fersehturm) in rdečo mestno hišo (Rotes Rathaus) je dobro izhodišče za pohod po najlepši berlinski aveniji Unter den Linden (po domače, Pod lipami).

Po poti boste med drugim uzrli Berlinsko stolnico (Berliner Dom), prispeli do Brandenburških vrat, v bližini pa se zagledali tudi v spomenik holokavstu. Ne prav daleč je nemški zvezni parlament, Reichstag. Vzpon na kupolo je brezplačen, sicer se malo načakaš (recimo 1 uro), vendar se splača zaradi izjemnega razgleda, ki ga nudi.

Zloglasni Berlinski zid prav tako spada med glavne atrakcije. East Side Gallery je največji ohranjeni kos zidu in poligon za sijajne grafitarije pomenljivih motivov.

Muzejski otok (Museum Insel) spada pod Unescovo dediščino in združuje izjemne muzeje. Študentska vstopnica za vse muzeje na otoku stane zgolj 8€ (ali 7€?). Vsem kulturnikom močno priporočam.

Berlinski ZOO bojda združuje največ živalskih vrst na svetu (zvezda = Knut), popoldanski obisk dvorca Charlottenburg paše bolj kot 1000€ kredita, v neposredni bližini prej omenjenih živalc pa najdemo tudi spominsko cerkev (Gedächtniskirche).

Obisk Potsdama (kakih 30 km izven Berlina) je nujen. Tu so se zbirali pomembni možje. Glede na lepoto kraja, nič čudnega.

2009 é um ano repleto de comemorações na Alemanha. Há 60 anos nascia a República Federal Alemã depois de a Lei Fundamental do país ter sido promulgada.  Celebra-se também os 20 anos da queda do muro de Berlim e da Revolução Pacífica realizada na então Alemanha Oriental.

Dia 03 de outubro é o aniversário de 19 anos da reunificação alemã. E por coincidência, um grande monumento do país completa hoje 40 anos. A torre de TV de Berlim (Der berliner Fernsehturm) é um dos pontos turísticos da Alemanha mais procurados até hoje. Também pudera: sendo o edifício mais alto da capital, com seus imponentes 368 metros, a torre oferece aos visitantes uma visão panorâmica privilegiada da cidade.

Essa construção foi erguida durante o Governo socialista da RDA, que pretendia fazer da torre não somente um transmissor dos sinais de TV, mas também um símbolo da imponência do regime. As formas de sua cúpula deveriam lembrar o satélite soviético sputnik. E a torre deveria reluzir a cor vermelha, símbolo do socialismo.

Ainda hoje, o espigão se mantém um ponto quase onipresente na paisagem urbana, já que pode ser visto de muitos bairros. Para quem visita Berlim, esse é um lugar de parada obrigatória. Künstler sind skurril. Mads Lynnerup hat die beiden Wahrzeichen Berlins vereint. In 2 Stunden Schnippelarbeit hat er eine konventionelle Dönerrolle auf die Form den Berliner Fernsehturms zurecht geschnitten.

When it comes to retro dining experiences, or charging a culinary moment with socio-economic history, there’s nothing quite as emotive as having a pianist play Purple Rain, lounge style, on a low-fi Casio, while you eat a particularly greasy wiener schnitzel in the cracklingly nylon 60s environment of the revolving restaurant three quarters of the way up the 368 metre Fernsehturm in the middle of Berlin. Round and round we go, slowly, yet twice as fast as the restaurant revolved before the fall of The Wall, when this place was a kind of Soho House for German Democratic Republic movers and shakers. Now all that’s left of the past is a kitschy interior that promenades faster than before and the brutalist concrete GDR plazas below.

Revolving restaurants are as 60s in spirit as Vidal’s bob and Paco’s metallics. They are a bricks, mortar and steel kind of techno ecstasy; a shorthand sketch of the space race and a future of jetpacks and TV telephone sets. Better…. Faster… stronger… an impossibly thin 4H pencil line of a building with a flying saucer on top to eat in.

Though Will Schwarz created the first, the Florianturm TV Tower in Dortmund in 1959, it was John Graham’s Space Needle in Seattle at the World’s Fair in 1962, following on from his success with a similar in Honolulu a year before, that created the world’s short-lived hunger for the revolving restaurant, surely the most modern structure ever to exist.

Though the concept of the revolving restaurant is now seen as decidedly retro futurist, a certain fascination has never faded. There is a touch of the Ballardian about it – no matter how far society at ground level sinks into its own effluent, you’re high above it all, forks in the clouds. There’s also a philosophical aspect to it: The circle is constant and mesmerising. There’s a statement here, if you want it while you’re enjoying buffet lunch, about mortality and futility. In 2001 the artist Tacita Dean made a film inside the restaurant at the Fernsehturm, a meditative piece with an anamorphic lens, studying the change in light from sunset to night, and how the mood changed the social nature of the space – the dark makes the windows effectively mirrors to the diners, with the view now internal; things become focused on the inside rather than the out, and the below.

There are still revolving restaurants worldwide, from the CN Tower in Toronto, to the Ginza Star Lounge in Tokyo and the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, which has suffered many an ill-fated incident and blaze over the years, as if to parallel the state of the nation. Some are often culturally invisible and their existence comes as a surprise, like the View Restaurant at the Marriot Marquis in Manhattan which gives some superlative perspectives on the neon carnival of Times Square. Others, like the Post Office Tower (or indeed BT Tower) in London are an integral part of the fabric of a city’s skyline. Eric Bedford’s Dalek-like 1966 building closed its doors in Fitzrovia to the public in 1980 in the wake of terrorist paranoia. The restaurant, however, is still up there. It’s a timewarp and an underrated gem of high-rise London, as is nearby Centrepoint. The building harks back to the glory days of that aforementioned ‘techno ecstasy’, when computers represented all there was to care about in terms of the future, but when just one of them could fill the whole wing of a building. The restaurant itself is a beauty, with a mirrored central core, offering a view from every internal vertical surface.

Wherever there’s a revolving restaurant (or one that’s still open, at least) there’s a queue. We all still want some of the excitement of the future promised to us back in the 60s. We want to reach for the stars. And on a more simplistic level, there’s no escaping the basic genius of the revolving restaurant: It’s a building and it moves. And no matter how jaded you may be, that’s still not something you see every day.
