Splendour In The Grass organisers have announced the much beloved music festival will move house in 2010, and grow up a bit.

Moving from its Belongil Fields home, Splendour will celebrate its 10^th year at Woodward, QLD, home of the Woodward Folk Festival.

Splendour organisers have also announced the festival will take place over three days, from Friday July 30^th to Sunday August 1^st.

Not to worry though, Splendour plans to be back in NSW in 2011, aiming to move to its permanent home in Byron Shire, The North Byron Parklands.

The chosen 660 acre North Byron Parklands site at Yelgun in the Byron Shire is undergoing the comprehensive approval process with the NSW Department of Planning for a permanent cultural event venue and will not be ready for next year’s event.

“Woodford Folk Festival and their beautiful site Woodfordia have been a great source of inspiration to us and we feel honoured to borrow their home,” says Jessica Ducrou, organiser of Splendour in the Grass.

“We have a great opportunity to grow our event and give people better access to the festival but at the same time keep Splendour In The Grass a unique and personal experience,” says Ducrou. “Given the size of the venue we will be able to accommodate almost all festival patrons in camping grounds onsite, giving more people the full festival experience.”

“The purpose built venue also means that we can incorporate a broader range of arts and cultural experiences, which we have been wanting to do for many years,” she says.

“Having one of Australia’s premier contemporary music events at Woodfordia will be a privilege,” said Bill Hauritz, Director of Woodford Folk Festival. “Splendour is one of the best managed events I have observed, they are responsible, caring and disciplined organisers. We can expect the best.”

Following my lousy time at the Queens International Film Festival, it’s come to light, via news sources, that the founder, Marie Castaldo, is the subject of numerous fraud allegations, stemming from unpaid debts from Queens, to upstate NY, to California.  The Queens Chronicle has an in-depth look on the story. And last night, Fox 5 News Reporter, Arnold Diaz, ran a Shame on You segment.  A local councilman is calling for an investigation.  After my experience at the film festival, I can tell you that this festival is an embarrassment to the Queens arts community, and I feel horribly for all the unsuspecting filmmakers and crew involved, who appear to have been taken for a ride.  I will let the articles and Shame on You segment speak for themselves, but I think it’s important for you all to be aware of it.

Come December, you would find music and dance galore at Chennai offering feast to our ears, as musicians gear up for another Kutcheri Season. It’s a great tradition of musical extravaganza, when Chennai comes lively with seasoned musicians exhibiting their skills in rendering krithis and alapanas, while the budding talents have an excellent platform to start their career in music especially in Carnatic music. Almost all the Sabhas have packed schedules and not to ignore the delicious menu they offer which draws quite a handsome crowd. I’ve listed few links that gives an idea of what is in store for this 2009 season.

Der Medienkompetenzpreis 2010 ist Teil von FiSH X dem Festival im StadtHafen

Die Landesrundfunkzentrale und das Ministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur Mecklenburg Vorpommern schreiben für 2010, im Rahmen von FiSH X, dem Festival im Rostocker Stadthafen erneut zwei Medienkompetenzpreise aus. Veranstaltet wird der Wettbewerb in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für neue Medien Rostock und den Offenen Kanälen des Landes.
Schulklassen, Bildungsträger, Gruppen aus Freizeit- und Kindereinrichtungen, Vereine und Jugendinitiativen aus unserem Land können ab sofort ihre medienpädagogischen Projekte aus den Jahren 2009 und 2010 einreichen. Die Projekte können aus allen Bereichen der Medienarbeit kommen. Es gibt keine Altersbeschränkungen. Von der Internetseite über Hörspiel bis zur Fernsehsendung kann alles eingereicht werden.

Neben dem Medienkompetenzpreis der Landesrundfunkzentrale wird auch in im Jahr 2010 speziell für schulische Einreicher der Medienkompetenzpreis Schule durch das Ministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Kultur MV ausgeschrieben.
Der Direktor der Landesrundfunkzentrale Dr. Uwe Hornauer über den Medienkompetenzpreis: „2010 feiert der Medienkompetenzpreis M-V sein fünfjähriges Jubiläum. Seit fünf Jahren präsentiert und prämiert er die innovativsten und spannendsten Medienkompetenzprojekte aus M-V. Immer wieder  war ich von der Vielfalt und Qualität der eingereichten Projekte begeistert. Insofern freue ich mich auf den  fünften Medienkompetenzpreis unseres Landes und die eingereichten Projekte.“

Eine Expertenjury wählt aus den eingereichten Beiträgen die Besten zur Präsentation am 16. April 2010 in Rostock aus. Die Preisveranstaltung bietet einen kurzen Einblick in die Vielfalt der medienpädagogischen Arbeit in unserem Bundesland.

Die Preise sind mit einer Gesamthöhe von 2000 Euro dotiert. Die Preisgelder sollen bei der Durchführung weiterer medienpädagogischer Projekte helfen.

I’d a lovely seat-hop-squeal moment this afternoon. And So I Watch You From Afar will be setting their guitars to kill Austin, Texas, at the South By South West festival next March. They’re not the only ones either; Fighting With Wire make their return while Autumn Owls, Halves and So Cow have also been summoned to represent Ireland in the least-embarrassing showcase in the world. Past selections certainly didn’t harm Channel One, Fight Like Apes or The Redneck Manifesto.

From what I’ve heard, the bands can expect to find themselves on the Sunset Strip of the South, a long dusty string of venues crammed full of industry-aficionados, journalists, photographers and of course, fellow musicians, all dying to hear what they have to offer. With over 200 making the final cut, the full list of bands is whopper to say the least. SXSW always mixes its billings to include the freshest new sounds with exciting headline acts and 2010 is no exception; Acid Mothers Temple and Mariachi El Bronx will bring the exotic sounds, along with the odd accents of Frightened Rabbit, Scanners and The Boxer Rebellion. So far, so good: let’s skip The View.

Just caught a twitter about this and saw the related post on the forums. Apparently the method you get Festival Horses (for various seasonal events) will be changing with the release of Siege of Mirkwood. Doc Holiday posted on it in his blog, so here is what he found out:

• New vendor Will Peartree will be there at the farm for this purpose
• You can only buy the festival horse during that festival
• Each mount costs:
  • 1 Festival run token
  • 12 festival barter tokens
  • 1 “Document of Mount Ownership” purchased from Will Peartree

So, the Eavis’ have at long last secured U2 for Glastonbury Festival 2010.  A great achievement, of course, considering the sort of money Glastonbury doesn’t pay performers, in comparision to what bands like U2 and Springsteen would normally expect. Whether you like the decision, respect it or think it’s an absolute travesty, there is a slightly more concerning thing to note. Year after year we see the UK music festivals (and, in fact, those worldwide) clamouring after the same set of ageing bands. And pretty soon this is going to run out…let’s face it, the crowds probably won’t get bored but the performers sure will and whether they deny it or not, these bands will retire back to their mansions in LA to live out their days in peace.

But where does that leave us? OK, so there’s an argument to say this generation has producer a few headliner size bands, Kings of Leon, for example, who proved last year at the Reading Festival that stage presence isn’t really their ‘thing’ and apparently, The Killers. Enough said. But compared to the undeniable legends that have existed in the past, our pickings are slim.  Don’t get me wrong, we have a mass of bands capable of owning the Other Stage, or other similar sized slots, but the state of the music industry is dictating that perhaps it might be time to start moving on from this traditional notion of ‘the headliner’: unless you genuinely believe we can spend the next 40 years watching Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy age, not necessarily gracefully, year on year.

In recent surveys, its been proven that although the headliners are still considered important, they are not the most important factor when deciding which festivals to go to. Then, in comes that lovely, indefinable, key word: ‘atmosphere.’  This obviously isn’t a new concept: everyone’s been harping on about the ‘Glastonbury spirit, man’ for years.  However, what is new is the concept that it might entirely replace the role of these household name bands that, until now, have had the status of Gods. With the download culture and record industry in catasrophic decline, the only superstars that are being created are those of the pop world, of the reality TV breed. Rock superstars aren’t necessary anymore…we don’t need to unite in the love of these stars, because now we have the freedom of choice to truly embrace the things we actually love and not just those that it is cool to like. As subcultures become the core of culture in general, it becomes harder and harder to book bands that aren’t going to cause backlash because people are becoming so much more idosyncratic in their consumption of music. You like hardcore, electro, gothic-metal trance? Thats fine. In fact, you’re probably less likely to be sneered at than somebody who, god forbid, openly admits to liking Coldplay’s latest album. Without these rock superstars, the sense of hysteria diminishes (it’d be easy to start a whole extra point about blogging and the internet and celebrity culture there…but I’ll spare you…) and therefore, headliners no longer thrive, as the buzz of excitement that used to surround their performances no longer exists.

So while we debate whether we can tolerate the general irritation that is Bono long enough to witness 80,000 singing ‘One’ by the Pyramid, a moment that will, undoubtedly, be ‘classic Glastonbury,’ maybe we should stop whinging about the bookings that festival organisers are practically bankrupting their festivals to secure and instead focus on everything else that the festivals have to offer. Who knows what this could mean for festivals such as Reading and Leeds, who have little else to offer bar the line-up. The days of the headliner are numbered, mark my words.

While advertising agencies make many thousands of dollars promoting the Perth International Art Festival (PIAF), students from the Fremantle John Curtin College of Arts were expected to donate their time last Sunday, as extras for a TV commercial that was shot around His Majesty’s Theatre.

It seems rather strange that kids are expected to work for ‘fame’ only, while everyone else involved gets paid very well. Of course parents also had to ‘donate’ their time to get the kids to the location. Bad manners PIAF!

To stay with John Curtin. Why is it that the year 11 students finished this semester 4 weeks prior to the start of the official school holidays? What are working parents supposed to do with 16 year old kids roaming the streets and beaches without much supervision all day?
