Seven teams will fight it out in the UAE for the trophy

Love it or loathe it the FIFA Club World Cup is going to remain a staple part of the football calendar. To some observers it’s a chance to win a trophy and add more prestige to their club. To some others it’s a competition that turns up in the middle of a long hard season, getting in the way of domestic progress. Either way there will be seven teams in the United Arab Emirates from December 9-19 who will be giving everything to win the cup. Here is Stoppage Time’s guide to the participants:

FC BARCELONA – UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

FC Barcelona became European champions for the third time in May after beating Manchester United 2-0 in Rome. It is surprising that a massive club such as “Barça” has never won the FIFA Club World Cup or its predecessor, the Intercontinental Cup. After twice being crowned European champions in 1992 and 2006 the Catalans have been defeated by Brazilian clubs in their attempts to be crowned the world’s best. In 1992 a São Paulo side inspired by Rai beat Barça 2-1 and then, three years ago, Internacional scored a late goal to deny Barcelona again. This time the ‘Blaugrana’ hope to make it third time lucky in this tournament and add the FIFA Club World Cup to the other five trophies they’ve won under their coach Pep Guardiola.

ESTUDIANTES DE LA PLATA – COPA LIBERTADORES WINNERS 2009

Estudiantes won their fourth Copa Libertadores with a 2-1 victory over two legs against Brazilian side Cruzeiro. The Argentinian side had a mixed record in the Intercontinental Cup during their heyday in the late 1960s and early 70s. Their solo victory came in 1968 after a 2-1 aggregate win over Manchester United (before 1979 the champions of Europe and South America played home and away matches to win the cup). Their next two efforts, however, ended in failure; in 1969 Milan won 4-2 on aggregate and in 1970 Feyenoord Rotterdam claimed their only world title with a 3-2 aggregate win. Can Juan Sebastián Verón emulate his father Juan Ramón’s achievements and become a world champion with his boyhood club?

ATLANTE CF – CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The Mexican side secured their second CONCACAF Champions League title after an all-Mexican affair with Cruz Azul ended up 2-0 after a two-legged final. Atlante’s other title win was back in 1983 when they defeated Surinam’s Robinhood FC (yes, really!) 6-1 over two legs. Atlante’s Club World Cup campaign will kick-off at the quarter-final stage against either Al Ahli or Auckland City, who meet in the first match of the competition.

POHANG STEELERS – AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The three time Asian champions have not always dominated the domestic scene in South Korea but tend to thrive in Asian club competition. After previous successes in 1997 and 1998, Pohang Steelers won a third title this year by defeating Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Tokyo’s National Stadium. Pohang will play against TP Mazembe at the quarter-final stage, the winner of which faces Estudiantes in the semi-finals.

TP MAZEMBE – CAF AFRICAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The Congolese side have been African champions on three occasions after their most recent success was decided on away goals against Nigerian team Heartlands FC. After the Nigerians won the first leg 2-1 at home, Mazembe won the second leg 1-0 to secure a passage to the Middle East. A meeting with Estudiantes de la Plata awaits if they can overcome Pohang Steelers in the quarter-final.

AUCKLAND CITY – OFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WINNERS 2009

The New Zealanders will be participating in the FIFA Club World Cup for a second time, after their previous appearance in 2006, following their 9-4 win over Soloman Islands’ club Koloale FC in the two-legged OFC Champions League final. In 2006 Auckland City lost in the opening play-off match to Al Ahly of Egypt 2-0. Can they avoid a repeat against a similarly named Al Ahli of UAE in this year’s tournament?

AL AHLI – UAE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2009

Representing the host country in this year’s tournament, Al Ahli have never been Asian champions but are the current UAE League champions after winning the title by one point from nearest challengers Al Jazira Club. Last season’s attempt at continental glory came to an end in the group phase of the AFC Champions League competition. Will meet Atlante CF in the quarter-final if they beat Auckland City in the play-off match.

Ebi w wieku 12 lat trafia do Feyenoordu, czyli klubu należącego razem z Ajaxem i PSV do wielkiej holenderskiej trójcy. Najpierw swoje umiejętności szlifuje w drużynie juniorów, aby później trafić do pierwszego składu, robić regularne postępy i umacniać swoją pozycję. Niestety drogę na szczyt przerywa kontuzja, a następnie dyskwalifikacja za rzekome palenie marihuany. Po powrocie na boisko Smolarek prezentuje się bardzo dobrze, ale już za rok Rotterdam opuszcza trener Feyenoordu Bert van Marwijk który nie bał się stawiać na Ebiego. Van Marwijk odchodzi do Borussii Dortmund, a Smolarek razem z nim. Przez dwa lata występów w Bundeslidze rozgrywa więcej meczów i strzela więcej bramek niż przez 5 lat w Holandii (!). Smolarek wyrobił sobie renomę w Niemczech, jego pozycja wydawała się niezagrożona. Postanawia jednak spróbować czegoś nowego i przenosi się do Hiszpanii z nadzieją, że tamtejsza liga będzie bardziej odpowiadała jego stylowi gry. Smolarek dostaje niesamowitą szansę pokazania się już w pierwszym meczu nowej drużyny. W meczu Racingu Santander z FC Barceloną wchodzi na boisko w drugiej połowie na nieco zmęczonych rywali, lecz po 10 minutach zostaje ukarany czerwoną kartką. W dalszej części sezonu Ebi strzela tylko 4 bramki i zostaje wypożyczony do słabego Boltonu Wandereres, w którym zagrał tylko kilka razy, nie strzelając przy tym żadnego gola.

W tym momencie jego kariera staje w miejscu. Od 10 sierpnia pozostaje bez klubu. Ostatnio krążyły plotki jakoby Smolarkiem zainteresowane było HSV i Hannover 96. Ebi wolał grać w drugim zespole Bundesligi (mimo, że gdy był w szczytowej formie, jego Borussia zajmowała co najwyżej 7 miejsce). W Hamburgu spędził 10 dni trenując razem z drużyną, po czym władze HSV zdecydowały, że nie podpiszą z nim kontraktu. Czy Smolarek miałby większe szanse na grę w Hannoverze? Pewnie tak, bo to klub nieco słabszy, chętniej zatrudniłby polskiego napastnika. Polscy napastnicy (i w ogóle piłkarze) mają jednak to do siebie, że uważają się za lepszych niż są w rzeczywistości. Tym sposobem największy talent polskiej piłki już drugi miesiąc nie ma klubu, nie gra regularnie i właśnie został odsunięty od szerokiej kadry polskiej reprezentacji. Ebi jednak jest zadowolony z pobytu w Hamburgu. Na pewno trochę pozwiedzał, dostał nowy dres, no i gazety znowu o nim pisały.

Jestem bardzo ciekaw jak dalej potoczą się losy Smolarka – stereotypowego polskiego piłkarza.

Another match today to start off the betting day coming from the Holland Eredivsie.  This is a match between two defensive teams that are capable of scoring goals.  In this match, just as the previous three times these teams have met up I think we will see a low scoring match.  There defenses just over power there goal scoring capabilities.  I realize that most matches in the Holland Eredivisie are goals galore, but the odds here on the under 2.5 goals in @ 1.95 and given that the past three meetings have been unders I am going to take this punt.

Nicht wirklich jedenfalls. Das hat sich ja spätestens seit letzter Saison erübrigt, als der BVB fast alle Testspiele gewann – und den Saisonstart richtig in den Sand setzte. In der diesjährigen Vorbereitung lief es von den Ergebnissen her so richtig gemischt, wie nun auch beim Jubiläumsturnier von Feyenoord Rotterdam, die ihr 100-jähriges feierten. Ein überzeugendes 2:1 gegen die Gastgeber am Freitag und ein vom Ergebnis her etwas zu deutliches 0:3 gegen Tottenham am Sonntag stehen da auf dem Papier. Gegen die Engländer blieben mehrere Chancen ungenutzt und die Sicherheit in der Abwehr fehlte in den entscheidenden Szenen.

Hört sich verdächtig nach letzter Saison an? Mag sein, aber eine Woche ist noch Zeit bis zum Pokalspiel in Essen und Mannschaften von der Qualität der Spurs, die auch in diesem Jahr wieder versuchen wollen, in der Premier League oben anzugreifen, werden uns in der Bundesliga nicht jede Woche begegnen. Außerdem: Kleben wir einfach mal nen fetten ‘Testspiel’-Sticker auf die Partie. Interessiert nächsten Samstag keinen mehr.

Meine Prognose bleibt ohnehin die gleiche wie auch schon vor der Vorbereitung: Diese Mannschaft wird in der Liga keine Bäume ausreißen, sie wird aber besser auftreten als letzte Saison und kann vielleicht für die eine oder andere Überraschung sorgen – vor allem, wenn die ‘ersten Elf’ endlich mal weitgehend gesund bleiben. Zur Zeit ist das bekanntlich nicht der Fall: Alexander Frei fehlt ohnehin noch bis voraussichtlich September und auch Tinga wird den Saisonstart versäumen. Für das Pokalspiel am Samstag sieht es immerhin hinten rechts ganz gut aus; vermutlich kann zumindest einer der beiden Kandidaten Owomoyela und Rukavina auflaufen, vielleicht teilen sie sich die Aufgabe auch. Dagegen ist Kuba wegen seines Platzverweises im Pokalfinale gesperrt und Delron Buckley wird wegen einer Oberschenkelzerrung nicht mitwirken können.

Ein Österreicher im Sturm neben Roy Makaay und Jon Dahl Tomasson? Klingt unrealistisch, ist es aber seit heute nicht mehr. Denn der holländische Klub Feyenoord Rotterdam hat seine Fühler nach dem österreichischen Stürmer-Talent Marko Arnautovic ausgestreckt.

Feyenoords technischer Direktor Peter Bosz wurde schon mit den Worten “Wir sind uns schon fast einig. Normalerweise wird er kommen. Wir sehen in Arnautovic einen jungen, talentierten Spieler, den wir gerne haben würden.” zitiert. Arnautovic schoss bei den Amateuren von Twente Enschede 21 Tore in 24 Spielen, spielte 14 Mal in der Kampfmannschaft und erzielte dabei ein Tor.

Niederländische und österreichische Medien sprechen von einer kolportieren Ablösesumme von vier bis fünf Millionen Euro. Der 19-jährige wäre damit mit einem Schlag der teuerste österreichische Transfer, und sollte der Wechsel über die Bühne gehen, hätte der künftige Teamchef eine Option mehr in der Entscheidung um Südafrika 2010…
