The Story: Johnny, Ben, and the kids go to Nu-World for a vacation but what they find there is a far cry from being a resort.

What’s Good: Probably the best thing the issue has going for it is its generic tone.  The book is a wacky, retro sci-fi adventure.  While Nu-World has become a dystopian mess, Hickman uses this as an excuse to fill the issue with a scuttling, disembodied brain and a hero with a goofy helmet blasting apart robots by the dozen with his ray gun.  It’s cheesy, but definitely fun, like a bad 70s sci-fi flick.  There’s also a depiction of a pseudo-scientific, transcendental sort of mass suicide that sort of reminded me of Logan’s Run with astronauts.  I’m probably alone on that, but it’s cool nonetheless.

I’ve never been a fan of the kids, but Hickman actually made me enjoy their presence.    Both Val and Franklin have a comical way of undercutting Ted Castle and his planetary problems, but in different ways.  Val makes it all seem so simple through her intellect, while Franklin approaches the situation and his circumstances on an entirely different level, as a child would.  There’s a beautifully paced sequence where he offers a grieving Ted Castle a sandwich, tugging the heart-strings while providing a laugh.

Through his wacky sci-fi hijinks and his use of the brain and the kids, Hickman takes what could’ve been a heavy-handed, grindingly tragic affair and turns it into something much more light and fun.  That said, by the time the issue ends, he still gives a little glimpse of the epic nature of what actually unfolded, finishing the book with a beautiful retrospective montage, narrated in a simple fashion that metatextually breaks the comic into its component parts and making it seem all the grander in retrospect.

What’s Not So Good: Despite all this, under perhaps a more cynical lens, it’s hard not to be very well aware of the fact that this issue was more or less written to serve a simple purpose: sweep Nu-World under a rug.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for it, but it can be a bit frustrating when a writer’s purpose is so abundantly clear.  The comic is as much a story as it is a means to an end.

Of course, if Hickman is writing this issue solely to be done with Nu-World, that also means that several characters are treated cursorily, perhaps not with the respect they deserve.  There’s not one but two character deaths, both of which are insultingly brief, abrupt, and underwhelming.  Like Nu-World itself, it’s clear that Hickman just wanted them out of the way.   The Nu-World characters have little page-space, don’t flesh themselves out much, and basically show up just to remind us that they’re there.

Furthermore, while the art isn’t atrocious or anything, Neil Edwards is a far, far cry from Dale Eaglesham.  His artwork just feels very generic, with little sense of individual style or flair.  It does the job without attempting to do anything more.  Edwards also struggles with headshots.  Two panels in particular, one of Johnny and one of Psionics, are total botches.

Conclusion: Enjoyable for what it is, but it creaks a little at times due to the weaker art and Hickman’s obvious motivations.

Eine 46 jährige Frau lenkte gestern Abend ihren PKW auf der Straße von Schrattenberg in Richtung Katzelsdorf. Auf dem Beifahrersitz befand sich ihr 14 jähriger Sohn.
Etwa auf Höhe von StrKm 26,100, in der dort befindlichen Rechtskurve geriet der PKW ins Schleudern, kam nach rechts von der Fahrbahn ab, prallte gegen eine Grundstückszufahrt und kam auf der linken Fahrzeugseite liegend im Straßengraben zum Stillstand.
Ein nachkommender Lenker alarmierte die Rettungskräfte.
Der Sohn konnte selbstständig bis zum Eintreffen der FF-Schrattenberg das Unfall-Kfz verlassen. Die Lenkerin musste von der Feuerwehr aus dem Unfallwrack befreit werden und wurde vom Notarzt versorgt. Beide Fahrzeuginsassen wurden mit Verletzungen unbestimmten Grades in das Landesklinikum Weinviertel Mistelbach eingeliefert.

Hace tiempo estuvimos hablando de los dos tamaños de sensor en las cámaras réflex digitales (al menos en lo que a Nikon se refiere, aunque esta distinción también se da en Canon o en Sony por ejemplo). En general, los modelos tope de gama de estas marcas son los que van equipados con sensores de tamaño completo (también denominados Full Frame o directamente FF) que tienen las mismas dimensiones que un negativo fotográfico de 35mm, mientras que las inferiores llevan sensores de tipo APS-C que poseen unas medidas más reducidas como podéis apreciar en la siguiente imagen.

Pues bien, ya sabemos que el mundo de la electrónica de consumo siempre va de arriba a abajo, y poco a poco los modelos de cámaras equipadas con sensores de tamaño completo se van extendiendo por las gamas de los fabricantes. En el caso de Nikon, ya no sólo las D3, D3s y D3x van equipadas con estos sensores, sino que la D700 también lo lleva, siendo bastante más barata (aunque lo mejor sería decir “menos cara”) que sus hermanas mayores.

Algo más que una simple diferencia de precio

Como os digo, si vemos el catálogo completo de Nikon vamos a ver que la diferencia de precio entre una D300s (el tope de gama actual en sensor DX) y una D700 (que en esencia es una D300 con sensor FX) no es demasiado elevada; o al menos es lo suficientemente reducida como para hacernos dudar si no merecerá la pena dar directamente el salto a Full Frame. En concreto, la primera sale por unos 1300 euros y la segunda por aproximadamente 2000. Y aunque esos setecientos euros son una pasta se miren por donde se miren, hay muchos usuarios que aplican lo de “caballo grande ande o no ande” y acaban optando por la D700 sin saber muy bien qué es lo que buscan en una cámara.

Los sensores Full Frame tienen mayor rango dinámico, mejoran la relación señal / ruido a sensibilidades elevadas, tienen una definición muy buena, los angulares mantienen intacta su distancia focal… pero también llevan aparejadas una serie de desventajas en las que algunas personas no pensaron cuando se deshicieron de su cámara APS-C para pasarse al sensor FF.

Estamos de acuerdo en que la diferencia de precio entre una cámara APS-C tope de gama y una FF tal vez no sea demasiado elevada; pero el verdadero gasto vendrá a la hora de “calzar” dicha cámara con las ópticas adecuadas: en términos generales las ópticas para FF son mucho más caras que en APS-C, pesan y abultan mucho más y, lo que es peor, nos va a dar la sensación de que no nos acercan lo suficiente al motivo a fotografiar.

El factor de recorte

Técnicamente, al no haber factor de recorte, un objetivo de 200mm en una cámara Full Frame es un 200mm, no hay más. En APS-C ese 200mm cerraría su ángulo de visión para dar el equivalente a un 300mm en Nikon (1,5x) o 320mm en Canon (1,6x); algo que adoran los amantes de los animales salvajes y las competiciones deportivas. Sin embargo, en FF para “acercarnos” al sujeto como en nuestra anterior cámara APS-C tendremos que comprar un 300mm “de verdad” con las consecuencias que esto implica para el bolsillo y la espalda.

Vamos a ver esto empleando como ejemplo dos teleobjetivos fijos con características técnicas similares (AF-S, VR y f/2.8) montados sobre cámaras Nikon:

Teleobjetivo Nikkor 300 mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR

• Dimensiones: 268 x 124 mm
• Peso: 2850 gr
• Precio aproximado: 5000 euros

Teleobjetivo Nikkor 400 mm f/2.8 G ED AF-S VR

• Dimensiones: 368 x 159 mm
• Peso: 4620 gr
• Precio aproximado: 8000 euros

Como podéis ver, el teleobjetivo de 400mm pesa y cuesta prácticamente el doble que el de 300mm y además es 10 cm más largo. Y la cosa es que en términos de ángulo de visión, el 300mm montado sobre una cámara DX equivaldrá a un 450mm, por lo que ni siquiera con el 400mm montado en nuestra cámara FX podremos acercarnos tanto al motivo a fotografiar. Esto va a dar lugar al síndrome “no estoy lo bastante cerca” que ha afectado a numerosos usuarios que han dado el salto a Full Frame y se han encontrado con un 200mm se queda corto para fotografiar ese gorrión que saldrá volando si damos un paso más.

Además, hay otro “problema” añadido: la gente que pretende encontrar un objetivo todoterreno para FF como los 18-200 que hay en formato APS-C con los que se puede ir a pasar el día con la cámara a cuestas sin mayor problema lo llevan claro. Para conseguir esas distancias focales en FF apenas hay opciones; y de hecho casi lo único que hay en ese sentido es el Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM que cuesta 2500 euros, pesa 1,7 Kg y es un mostrenco que abulta como un 70-200 f/2.8. Vamos, ideal para ir de excursión a la montaña con la cámara colgada del cuello.

Los objetivos de focal variable para cámaras con sensor de 35mm rara vez alcanzan relaciones de zoom más allá de 3x o como mucho 4x. Ópticas como 14-24 (1,7x), 35-70 (2x), 24-85 (3,5x) ó 70-300 (4,3x) son lo habitual; mientras que en DX es muy común encontrar en el mercado zooms de rango focal 18-135 (7,5x), 18-200 (11,1x) e incluso un 18-270 (15x) fabricado por Tamron.

Conclusión

No hay duda de que una cámara Full Frame da una calidad de imagen impresionante, pero eso no quiere decir que las cámaras con sensor APS-C no tengan su público. De hecho, en el caso de que os gusten las fotografías de naturaleza así como retratar eventos en los que no nos queda más remedio que estar alejados del sujeto principal (partidos de tenis, mítines políticos, aviones despegando…) tenéis en el factor de recorte a un buen aliado, ya que para conseguir distancias focales semejantes en una cámara Full Frame vais a necesitar dos cosas: ser millonarios y estar bastante fuertes.

Evidentemente no seré yo el que os desaconseje la compra de una cámara FF “porque sí”, ya que son una verdadera maravilla visual y allá cada uno lo que haga con su dinero; pero sí que os diré que meditéis muy bien si realmente le vais a poder sacar todo el partido posible. Tened en cuenta que en el mundillo de las cámaras réflex son las ópticas y no la cámara las que marcan el límite entre las fotografías que podréis o no podréis hacer; y en Full Frame el dinero que hay que pagar por elevar ese límite aumenta considerablemente.

For some reason, every time I come to Boremont, I get particularly nostalgic about the Westchester’s Suitehearts series. Probably because I wrote at least three of the chapters of Last Year’s Wishes are This Year’s Apologies here.

So last night I was clicking through LYWATYA, trying to get inspiration for my new Mandon story when I thought…what if I wrote an alternate ending to LYWATYA?

See, when I first outlined LYWATYA, it was going to start out Massington and end Massington. Kristen and Plovert were going to get together in the end, and then that would be it. But somewhere along the line, my opinion about Massington stories changed. I couldn’t make them go back together. LYWATYA ended up being my interpretation of New Moon: in the end, Bella should have picked Jacob. Massie picked Plovert, her Jacob, over Derrick, the not-quite Edward.

And then when I went back and wrote Westchester’s Suitehearts, everything fit. Derrick was a jerk and cheated on her. Massie was right to pick Plovert.

Another thing I realized is that Westchester’s Suitehearts could work two ways: as an in-between-quel or as a sequel to LYWATYA. In MITTCH, the characters are all still relatively chill and innocent. They’re straight out of middle school. But in Westchester’s Suitehearts, Dylan drinks more and I hinted (probably very subtley) that Claire and Cam wanted to go a little further than just a make-out. Sure, things like that could happen in one year, but couldn’t you see them doing it all again the summer after their 10th grade year?

(But it really is an in-between-quel, I can just see it as a sequel.)

So say there really was an alternate ending to LYWATYA. The events of Westchester’s Suitehearts would have never happened, of course. Derrick and Massie were faithful to each other all summer. Derrick leaves, Plovert is there for her, Derrick comes back and Massie is initially horrified. She plans to kiss Plovert in front of Derrick at the airport. But…she can’t do it. Something about seeing him again brings back all of her old feelings.

So in true Massie fashion, she just runs again.

Fast-forward to Claire’s sleepover, where Derrick learns everything that happened while he was gone. Massie’s not sitting by Plovert or Derrick, she’s with Kristen. Derrick wants to talk to Massie alone. Massie looks at Kristen and she can tell that Kristen just wants her to be happy.

So Massie and Derrick talk. Derrick feels absolutely horrible–he will literally do anything to get Massie to forgive him, to make her forget about what he’s done. He reveals that he didn’t really want to break up with her, that he still really liked her all along.

She still liked him too, of course. Those feelings never really went away. She loved him, but not enough to let him go and settle for Plovert. So the she kisses him and he knows that he’s forgiven.

Plovert, of course, is eavesdropping on them. And as soon as he hears them stop talking, he knows what’s happened. He’s heartbroken, but he’s glad that he fixed Massie up.

Kristen finds him at Claire’s bedroom door looking like Bambi after his mom got shot. They start talking…

Unfortunately, I don’t think I could ever put that into words. But if you’re a Massington die-hard, there’s your happy ending.

Prof. Günther Pallaver

Der am Institut für Politikwissenschaften der Universtität Innsbruck lehrende Südtiroler Professor Günther Pallaver hat sich im Laufe seiner mittlerweile langen wissenschaftlichen Karriere mit vielen Aspekten der Südtiroler Politik und Gesellschaft auseinandergesetzt und eine beachtliche Publikationsliste vorzuweisen.

Im Jahr 2006 ist im Studienverlag in Innsbruck der Sammelband “Die ethnisch halbierte Wirklichkeit – Medien, Öffentlichkeit und politische Legitimation in ethnisch fragmentierten Gesellschaften – Theoretische Überlegungen und Fallbeispiele aus Südtirol” erschienen, bei dem Professor Pallaver als Herausgeber und Mitautor fungiert.

Der Historiker Leo Hillebrand

Nach einem ersten Beitrag von Günther Pallaver (Demokratie und Medien in ethnisch fragmentierten Gesellschaft), auf den wir in den nächsten Tagen zurückkommen werden, und einem kurzen Aufsatz von Alexander Langer, den wir in diesem Forum bereits wiedergegeben haben, beschreibt Leo Hillebrand unter dem Übertitel “Getrennte Wege” die Entwicklung des ethnisch geprägten und folglich getrennten Mediensystems in Südtirol. Leo Hillebrand ist den Lesern dieses Forum kein Unbekannter. Von ihm stammt der kurze aber sehr fundierte Abriß der Geschichte des Medienhauses Athesia, den Sie ebenfalls auf diesem Forum finden.

Hillebrand beschränkt seine Analysen und Schlußfolgerungen im wesentlichen auf die beiden “großen” Tageszeitungen “Dolomiten” und “Alto Adige” und beschreibt eingangs kurz deren Werdegang im Nachkriegs-Südtirol. Eine Reihe von Faktoren, die Hillebrand in seinem Aufsatz systematisch beschreibt, begünstigten die Entwicklung der Athesia und deren medialen Flaggschiffs “Dolomiten”.

Hillebrand arbeitet schlüssig heraus, dass die Ausrichtung der beiden Zeitungen “Alto Adige” und “Dolomiten” von Anfang an Parteistellung in den ethnopolitischen Auseinandersetzungen einnahmen und sich als politische Organe ihrer Sprachgruppen verstanden. Dies war beim “Alto Adige” in den ersten Jahren weniger ausgeprägt, verschärfte sich aber Ende der Vierziger-Jahre massiv, als die Gründungsgenossenschaft durch ein Unternehmen abgelöst wurde, das in starke Abhängigkeit von politischen Stellen in Rom geführt wurde.

Hillebrand geht auch auf die Versuche ein, deutschsprachige Oppositionsmedien zu gründen und über Wasser zu halten und beschreibt die Gründe und Umstände ihres Scheiterns. Ein längeres Kapitel widmet Hillebrand der Entwicklung der RAI, die von der dominierenden SVP-Politik und den “Dolomiten” stets mit Argwohn beobachtet wurde. In einem weiteren Kapitel beschreibt der Historiker die Ausweitung des Angebots im audiovisuellen Bereich, die auch durch die gesetzlich nicht abgesicherte Errichtung von Sendeanlagen gefördert wurde.

Bietet einen guten Einblick in die ethnische getrennte Entwicklung des Südtiroler Medienwesens - der Sammelband "Die ethnisch halbierte Wirklichkeit" von Günther Pallaver (Hg.)

Mit der Annahme des Südtirol-Pakets und dem darauf einsetzenden Wirtschaftsaufschwung ergaben sich für Südtirols führende Medien neue Möglichkeiten, die von den “Dolomiten” auf Grund des rigiden Katholizismus und des patriarchalischen Führungsstils nur sehr zögerlich genutzt wurden. Kritisch setzt sich Hillebrand mit der in den Sechziger-Jahren im “Alto Adige” gepflegten radikalen Linie auseinander, die teilweise sogar in Konflikt mit den Förderern des Tagblattes in der römischen Politik geriet.

Spannend zu lesen ist der Abschnitt über die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den verschiedenen Strömungen in der SVP, die sich nicht zuletzt auch in Zeitungsplänen und -gründungen wiederspiegelten und die Rolle des “Skolast”, der in Folge der Umwälzungen der 68er-Jahre politischer und wichtiger wurde. Eine Episode blieb “Die Brücke”. Von Siegfried Stuffer, Josef Schmied und Josef Perkmann engagiert und couragiert vorangetragen, wurde die Kulturzeitschrift mit starken politischen – interethnischen! – Akzenten nur eineinhalb Jahre alt.

Hillebrand geht auch auf die Geschichte der “Südtiroler Volkszeitung” eine, die 1978 unter der presserechtlichen Verantwortung von Gerd Staffler entstand und bei der Lorenz Gallmetzer mitarbeitete. Aus der “Südtiroler Volkszeitung” wurde Anfang 1981 die konsequent mehrsprachige Zeitung “Tandem”, die 1985 einging.

1980 erschien erstmals die “FF”, geleitet vom ehemaligen RAI-Mitarbeiter Gottfried Solderer. Die FF hat sich inzwischen trotz mehrerer Krisen, journalistischen Aderlässen und letzthin einen Eigentümerwechsel einen festen Platz in der Südtiroler Medienlandschaft erschrieben. Sie war von Anfang an in kritischer Distanz zum Establishment und setzte sich – auch im Sinne des Gründungsherausgebers, des liberalen Bozner Industriellen und Kaufmann Christoph Amonn – für ein unverkrampftes Verhältnis zur italienischen Sprachgruppe ein und druckte ab 1993 auch italienische Artikel.

Auch der “Mattino” hatte sich dem Ziel verschrieben, die Sprachgruppen in Südtirol aneinander anzunähern. Das inzwischen eingestellte Blatt hatte eine gehobene Leserschaft und fand gute Akzeptanz, auch wenn ihm die angepeilte Auflage von 5000 nachhaltig versagt blieb.

Im Kapitel 4.2 (Medienangebot und Konsumverhalten) beschreibt Leo Hillebrand die politische und gesellschaftliche Situation in Südtirol, die Mitte der Achtziger Jahre ein frostiges Verhältnis zwischen den Sprachgruppen prägt. Die wichtigsten Medien berichteten aus stark ethnozentrischer Perspektive, die italienischen Neofaschisten feierten in Bozen große Erfolge und wurden zur stärksten italienischen Partei. Hillebrand geht so weit, die Arbeit der bedeutendsten Tageszeitungen, “Dolomiten” und “Alto Adige” als Gruppen erhaltende Manipulation zu bezeichnen. Dass dies stimmt, kann man daran ermessen, dass damals im “Alto Adige” erstmals vom “disagio”, dem Unbehagen der italienischsprachigen Südtiroler die Rede war. Der Begriff wirkt bis in unsere Zeit nach.

1996 ging die “Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung” aus der FF-Abspaltung “Südtirol Profil” hervor, die während der so genannten Schwimmbad-Affäre von Luis Durnwalder erfolgte. Hans Karl Peterlini war einer handfesten Bestechungsgeschichte rund um den Hausbau Durnwalders auf der Spur, konnte dann aber keinen gerichtsentscheidenden Beweis liefern und wurde von der FF-Geschäftsführung fallen gelassen.

My VIP subscription to FF just ended. I can’t say that I have been using the charting features lately, but I have been using the community. The adoption community there is AMAZING. The people are so knowledgeable and supportive. I have learned so much from them.

I am a little sad to see it all go, but at the same time I am ready to move on. You have to let go sometime, right?

And I’m ready to let go of my TTC roots.

The following guide will show you how to make Mozilla Firefox extremely streamlined without there being any loss of functionality.

If you follow this guide through, you're Firefox will end up looking similar to this (the only difference might be the theme you decide to use):

1. Right-click on the menu-bar in Firefox and un-check 'Bookmarks Toolbar'. Underneath 'Bookmarks Toolbar' it says 'Customize…'; click on this. When the box shows up, put a check-mark beside where it says 'Use Small Icons'. When you're finished putting a check-mark beside 'Use Small Icons', drag and drop Firefox's search-box into the 'Customize Toolbar' box, which will remove the search-box from Firefox (don't worry, later on in this guide I'll show you how to perform Google searches directly from the address bar). Once you're finished, click on 'Done'.

2. Right-click on the menu-bar, and click on 'View'; under the context-menu, make sure that 'Status Bar' is un-checked.

3. Download and install the following Mozilla Firefox extensions:

Hide Caption Titlebar Plus (this will hide the caption titlebar at the very top of your web-browser. Don't worry, the minimize, restore and close buttons will still show up.)
Hide Menubar (this will obviously hide the menu-bar. Simply press the Alt key to make the menu-bar come up when you have to use it.)
Smart Stop/Reload (this will combine the Stop and Reload buttons, making them one; this is what it's like in Google Chrome.)

4. Since you removed the search-box in Firefox, you'll want to have Firefox still be able to perform Google searches without leaving the page you're on, right? To be able to perform Google searches using the address-bar in Firefox, you simply have to do the following:

Type 'about:config' in the address-bar. You'll get a warning message; ignore it and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise'. In the filter box, type 'keyword.URL'. Modify the string to http://www.google.com/search?btnG=Google+Search&q=

After doing this, you'll be able to perform Google searches directly from your address-bar without having to use the search-box. This is similar to how Google Chrome functions.

5. Install a good compact theme of your choice from addons.mozilla.org

You're done! I hope you enjoy your new streamlined Firefox setup.

PS. I understand that some people out there may find this setup to be overly minimalistic; you're free to change/not change whatever you wish/don't wish to change.

1990. Big Sis broke up with her boyfriend (who often imitated Steve Urkel, if that tells you anything). She was pregnant again, mean as hell, and wanted to get out of Mississippi. So she went to live with an aunt in Chicago.

November 22nd, Thanksgiving Day. The phone rings. Big Sis had given birth to a beautiful, “lil’ red thang”…but her focus was on getting back home before Aunt V’s dressing was all gone. The baby’s name? Mickylelia (blah, blah, blah). There were, like, 4 names given to this poor child…because Big Sis let a cousin choose the name (of a supermodel) for the baby.

April 1, 1991. Aunt Tee died unexpectedly. And the family brought her back to Mississippi to be buried in the family plot.

I remember hearing the car pull up outside. Momma started crying. I just looked at her and said, “Here they come!” A big smile came across her face…like sunshine on a cloudy day. She hugged and cried with everyone as they came through the front door. Big Sis came in sobbing. She placed the baby carrier on the couch and then rushed over to Momma’s waiting arms.

I walked over to the couch and stared at the baby for a few seconds. This was our first meeting. She was so tiny! And I thought she looked a little bit like a lighter version of me (but nobody else saw it). And then, she opened her mouth and showed us how LOUD she could cry. Now that I think about it, it seemed like she was always crying.

I’d gently rub her eyebrows to put her to sleep. But as she got older, Momma quickly discovered that singing was the best way to get her to sleep at night.

When I was a little ba-by, sittin’ on Mama’s knee, she’d fold me to her bossom and sing this song to me…”Don’t you cry, m’honey! Don’t you weep no more! Mommy only loves her ba-by! All the other blackbirds sleepin’ on the floor…Mommy only loves her girl!”

I went away to school. When I’d call home, Momma couldn’t hang up without letting her talk to me. She’d sing her phone number to me (in the tune of the Jenny Craig theme song) just like “Grandma” taught her. And she always asked the same questions: “Where you at? You at school? You at Tougaloo Cottage?” (ain’t that cute?!)

A lot of things have changed since she was in elementary school…

I haven’t heard anything about her coming home with some little boy’s money in her pocket in a long time. And she’s somebody’s mom now.

But I can still hear her singing songs with her grandma. I can still see her orange face…stained with spaghetti sauce (her favorite). And I can still see that lil red thang in the baby carrier on the couch…

In Nederland is ‘Twitteren’ verkozen tot woord van het jaar. Dat geeft maar weer eens aan hoezeer wij op social media gebied achterlopen op de VS. Daar is door Oxford het woord ‘unfriend’ gekozen tot woord van het jaar
Amerikanen zijn dus al massaal bezig om hun volgers en ‘vrienden’ te kwalificeren terwijl wij net aan het Twitteren geslagen zijn. Een achterstand kun je inlopen, sterker nog: we kunnen leren van deze jaarwoorden. Ik kijk bij iedereen die mij gaat volgen of ik die persoon of instantie ook interessant vind om terug te volgen. Twitter is fantastisch om nieuwe mensen te leren kennen, andere beroepsgroepen te ontdekken en om nieuwe inzichten te verkrijgen. Maar het is net als met relaties in het echte leven: uiteindelijke gaat het wel om kwaliteit. Trap dus niet in de ‘volgersval’ en leer van de Amerikanen.

Nu ik toch aan het zeuren ben. Follow Friday (#FF) is meer een opsomming van volgers geworden dan wat het ooit was: mensen tippen die jij interessant vindt. En ik geef toe, ook ik maakte elke vrijdag obligate lijstjes. @unmarketing opende mij de #FF-ogen en ik maak nu elke week een top drie van mensen die ik graag onder de aandacht breng met uitleg waarom. Is voor die mensen leuk om te lezen en zo kunnen anderen een kwaliteitsoordeel maken.

Zou mooi zijn als ‘kwaliteitsnetwerk’ het woord van 2010 zou worden. Want daar is Twitter volgens mij nu juist voor bedoeld.

I decided to look through various Mozilla Firefox themes today since I've not changed my theme for over a month now. After doing a little bit of searching, I decided to make the theme Black Stratini my new default Firefox theme.

The light-colored original version of the Stratini theme is nice as well, but I went with the dark version of it since it goes nicely with my customized dark Windows XP theme.

Damn, is it ever nice!

 Dying to know the Pretty Committee’s juiciest gossip? Curioius what people mean when they call you an LBR? (Hint: it’s nawt a compliment.) Want tips on how to go from a six-point-ew to a ten?

Ah-bviously! This cute-times-a-million gift book contains the Clique’s best comebacks, favourite expressions, and silliest secrets. One hundred Gossip Points if you can guess Massie’s first lip kiss…

I think this book will turn out to be useful in the long run, especially if you’re a Clique Fanfic writer like me. The sections I found the most useful was the Clique’s Crush Weband the Pretty Committee’s Master Packing List (which I consult all the time, no lie). I wasn’t particularly interested in the list of comebacks and the billions of quotes about boys and lip-kissing and whatnot. I laughed when I saw all of the crappy poetry that that had been displayed over the years in the books.

In terms of finding out more info about the Clique characters, it was the PC’s bios and the Crush Web that surprised me the most. Did you know Skye and Chris liked each other at one point? And so Kemp and Skye and Chris Abeley and Skye and Josh Hotz and Skye? Like, when did that happen?

(It totally ruined my Ten Things for Chris Plovert, because I kind of make him hate her…oh well.)

And it turns out that Dylan kissed that tennis star and Kristen’s first kiss was Dune. Huh.

It’s a good buy, especially since it’s only 7.99 at Target.

Mungkin hari ini adalah hari yang berarti bagi orang-orang tertentu. Begitu pun bagi saya. Hari ini saya melihat satu bukti betapa baiknya Tuhan.
Tuhan memberi kesempatan pada satu jiwa yang hatinya hampir tertutup untuk perubahan.
Mungkin Tuhan juga pernah murka kepadanya, tapi… Tuhan kan baik!
Ada air mata yang tidak terduga muncul di pelupuk sepasang mata. Ratusan pasang mata menyaksikannya. Semoga itu benar-benar sesal.
Saya memang bukan siapa-siapa untuknya. Tapi Tuhan yang menyayangi dia adalah Tuhan yang saya sayangi.
Dari dulu, saya selalu percaya setiap orang pasti bisa berubah. Dan semoga do’a dan air mata saya membantu Tuhan membuatnya berubah jadi lebih baik.
