<p class="MsoNormal">When in Rome, ape the locals.</p>
<p>Or go native.</p>
<p>Or at least try to act like you know your way around.</p>
<p>This is not difficult, especially for Filipino tourists visiting the Eternal City for the very first time. Filipinos, after all, are to cultural adaptation as the Chinese are to producing pirated DVDs. And just like illegally-copied video discs, the said Filipino trait remains unfettered by regional restrictions.<!--more--></p>
<p>But then again, this trait — as far as Rome goes — appears to be irrelevant.<br />
Romans are still likely to be irritated whenever strangers interrupt their routines by asking them for directions.</p>
<p>Just like sharp-tongued New Yorkers, Romans have perhaps nurtured a dislike for tourists, simply because their city has too many of them, Filipinos or otherwise.</p>
<p>Besides clogging buses and trains, these visitors delay pedestrian traffic by reading street signs, studying maps, and posing for pictures.</p>
<p>How does it feel like to live in a city absolutely swamped with visiting foreigners?</p>
<p>I barely have an idea. I live in a city notorious for being the Philippines&#8217; squatter capital and I&#8217;m pretty sure that that&#8217;s not a top tourist attraction.</p>
<p>What I do know is that for the first half of 2006, approximately six million people visited Rome. The Philippines — which is 60 times larger than Rome — only had 2.8 million visitors during the same year.</p>
<p>So what does this mean?</p>
<p>There is a shortage of Romans patient enough to give directions to the next bus stop while there is a surplus of Filipinos — at least 30 to a tourist — all too willing to answer any questions under the sun, proud of their abilities to communicate using broken</p>
<p>English, complemented by various hand and facial gestures.</p>
<p>This discrepancy posed a problem for my wife and I when we were about to leave Rome and the bus we needed to catch was running late.</p>
<p>If we missed the bus to the train station, it might take awhile before we could board a train to the airport. A later train to the airport might mean a delayed connection to Paris, compromising the last stop of our European adventure.</p>
<p>We had become so desperate that we considered taking a cab. The idea was quickly dismissed when I learned that it might cost me an arm, a leg, and my other organs, unsavory and otherwise.</p>
<p>Why was the bus late?</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t know but I was tasked to find out.</p>
<p>Armed with my poor English speaking skills and my atrocious Italian, I ambled to the station attendant and asked when was the bus arriving.</p>
<p>She answered me in broken English and then she shooed me off.</p>
<p>Was this racism?</p>
<p>Were my questions being dismissed outright because I wasn&#8217;t white? Was I making a fool of myself because I didn&#8217;t know how to speak their language properly? Was I being treated unfairly because I was overweight and therefore used more soap than thin people?</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t know.</p>
<p>But I found out soon enough.</p>
<p>As I sat beside my wife in the waiting area, I saw various other tourists — some of whom spoke in English — getting the same treatment that I got. They asked the same set of questions that I asked but they were summarily dismissed, like appeals of lawyers with losing court cases.</p>
<p>Not long after, the bus arrived, making us consider the incident with some measure of fondness. (We did catch the plane to Paris, after all).</p>
<p>My wife and I loved Rome — we still do — despite having stayed for less than a week. And no bus station attendant, no matter how ill-tempered, was about to ruin that memory for us.<br />

Após flagrarmos o Mini Cooper no porto de Santos (SP) e algumas unidades do Kia Soul terem sido vistas em concessionárias, é a vez do Fiat 500 começar a aparecer no país. Uma frota do compacto italiano foi vista &#8211; e fotografada &#8211; pelo leitor Felipe Imperiano Costa. A imagem nos foi gentilmente cedida pelo site <strong>AutoDiário</strong>.</p>
<p>A única fotografia feita por Felipe mostra um caminhão-cegonha em um local identificado como um porto do Rio de Janeiro. Todos os modelos, curiosamente, têm a carroceria pintada de branco. As unidades que a Fiat começou a importar devem chegar na versão Sport, equipada com motor 1.4 de 100 cv. O preço do modelo deve ficar na casa dos R$ 70 mil, segundo algumas publicações.</p>

Il motore della D era derivato da quello della <strong>Nuova 500 Sport</strong>, <strong>costruita dal &#8216;58 al &#8216;60</strong>; va tuttavia osservato che la versione del motore per il modello Sport, forniva <strong>21 cavalli</strong>.<br />
Dal punto di vista estetico, la D aveva le seguenti peculiarità, che la distinguevano dalla 1a serie:      </p>

Invece, <strong>sulla 1a serie</strong>, il tetto era completamente in tela e apribile. <p>Di seguito le operazioni più importanti : </p>
<p><strong>Ogni 500 km</strong> bisogna controllare il livello dell&#8217;olio e la pressione dei pneumatici.<br />
<strong>Ogni 2500 km</strong> vanno ingrassati i fusi articolati.<br />
<strong>Ogni 10.000 km</strong> (<strong>oppure ogni 6 mes</strong>i) occorre sostituire l&#8217;olio del motore.</p>
<p>I lubrificanti consigliati dalla FIAT erano:</p>
<p><strong>multigrado 20W/40</strong>, per temperature superiori a 0° C;<br />
<strong>multigrado 10W/30</strong> per temperature tra gli 0 e i -15° C.</p>
<p>Sempre ogni <strong>10.000 km</strong>, sono necessari:</p>
<p>1. lubrificare lo stoppino del distributore d&#8217;accensione;<br />
2. verificare la distanza tra i contatti del ruttore dell&#8217;accensione e mettere in fase la stessa;<br />
3. pulire le candele e verificare la distanza tra gli elettrodi delle medesime;<br />
4. regolare il minimo del carburatore;<br />
5. sostituire il filtro dell&#8217;aria;<br />
6. controllare lo spessore delle guarnizioni dei freni;<br />
7. controllare il gioco della leva del freno a mano;<br />
8. verificare il gioco delle punterie della distribuzione.</p>
<p><strong>Ogni 20.000 km</strong>:</p>
<p>1. controllare il serraggio dei bulloni che fissano alla carrozzeria i gruppi meccanici;<br />
2. lubrificare le cerniere delle porte.<br />
3. Ogni 30.000 km, sostituire l&#8217;olio del cambio e del differenziale. Il lubrificante consigliato era del tipo SAE 90 EP.</p>

<p> Dal 13 febbraio al 20 febbraio del 1958 <strong>la Fiat 5oo Abarth</strong>,rappresentata in fugara,corse interrottamente <strong>per 168 ore</strong> sulla pista di <strong>Monza</strong>,collezzionando sei record internazzionali di velocita&#8217; nella categoria delle auto di serie con cilindrata compresa fra i 351cc e 500cc.La bella presentazione sopprese il publico,perche non immaginavano come una <strong>piccola auto utilitaria fosse realmente un &#8220;siluro&#8221;</strong>realizzato per i record di velocita&#8217;.Prima della presentazione <strong>la Fiat 500 Abarth</strong> non aveva ottenuto molta attenzione.Un o perche all&#8217;epoca <strong>Abarth </strong>non era cosi noto come poi divenne negli anni Sessanta.Poi perche nel 1957,presento la prima versione solo ad una cerchia ristretta di amici.In tal  caso non ebbe molto successo,cosi un mese dopo <strong>Abarth</strong> ripresenti <strong>la 500</strong> al grande publico del <strong>Salone di Torino</strong>,cercando uno strataggemma per catturare sotto i riflettori della manifestazione una maggiore attenzione sul suo lavoro.</p>

<p>  <strong>La FIAT 500 Abarth bicolore presentata al salone di Torino nel 1957.</strong></p>
<p>Questa volta non presento una <strong>esemplare elaborato</strong> solo nella meccanica,ma pure nella carrozzeria,che vernicio di due colori contrastanti,montando profili e accessori cromati,infatti <strong>Abarth</strong>,faceva attenzione ai gusti del publico,il quale doveva riporre   rimedio alla poverta&#8217; <strong>della 500</strong>,che non era piaciuta ai primi potenziali clienti.</p>
<p><strong>LA MECCANICA.</strong></p>
<p>Dal punto di vista meccanico la 500 modificata da <strong>Abarth</strong>,la cilindrata rimase quella della prima serie :<strong>479cc</strong>,ma con la <strong>testata lavorata</strong>,un <strong>nuovo carburatore</strong>,<strong>l&#8217;albero a camme piu&#8217; spinto</strong>,e il famoso <strong>impianto di scarico</strong>.Queste semplici modifiche ed una attenta messa a punto permisero di ottenere,una potenza di <strong>sette cavalli</strong> in piu&#8217;,toccando cosi una velocita di oltre i <strong>100Km/h</strong>.Con queste modifiche non ottenne un gran successo,principalmente per il prezzo elevato,percio&#8217; <strong>Abarth</strong> ne costrui pochissimi esemplari.Lo stesso non ebbe migliore fortuna ,la Fiat 500 derivazione <strong>Abarth seconda serie,</strong>presentata nel 1958 nella versione monocolore,ma con motore maggiorato a <strong>499,5cc</strong> e dotata di allestimenti piu&#8217; ricchi,presentati nella rinnovata <strong>FIAT NUOVA 500 Normale</strong>,ai quali si aggiunse la tipica <strong>calandra Abarth</strong> e le scritte distintive del modello.La 500 derivazione <strong>Abarth</strong> <strong>seconda serie</strong> ,e proprio quella che ottenne i record di velocita&#8217; nel 1958 ,con le modifiche concesse da regolamento,riguardo l&#8217;alimentazione,il raffreddamento ad olio,e l&#8217;estetica.Cosi&#8217; il publico.associo l&#8217;idea della Fiat 500 della grande impresa ,a quella del modello di serie capi&#8217; che la piccola di casa Fiat era un&#8217; auto veramente affidabile e di buone prestazioni.</p>

Il <strong>1972</strong> portò altri <strong>due titoli</strong>, con <strong>Lastrioli </strong>con la <strong>600 su Abarth 595</strong>, e Santucci con la <strong>700 su Giannini 650 </strong>.Infine nel <strong>1973 </strong>altre due affermazioni con Piero e Lastrioli rispettivamente si <strong>Giannini 590</strong> e <strong>650</strong>. <strong>Renzo Vaccari</strong> trasformò al massimo dell’evoluzione il motore <strong>Giannini 650</strong> a condotta separata,che arrivava a sviluppare <strong>70 cavalli</strong>, una potenza che su piste veloci come Monza, raggiungeva una velocità massima di <strong>180Km/h</strong>.</p>

A primo impatto il carrozziere la trovata in condizioni pessime, e guardando la macchina è stato farovevole come aveva già pensato il proprietrio alla sostituzione di tutti i lamierati. Dopo alcuni giorni si comincia a tagliare tutta la parte frontale, e sottoporta.</p>

<p>Successivamente hanno spazzolato tutta la zona e rimosso dalle giunture il vecchio <strong>mastice</strong>.<br />

<p>Come potete notare, spazzolando le parti dove si vede la rugine ritorna il lamierato in ottime condizioni ,è un lavoro che deve essere fatto prima di rimontare i pezzi nuovi.</p>

<p>Dopo spazzolato e stata spruzzata una mano di <strong>isolante</strong> che farà ,da antiruggine e cosi viene saldato tutto il frontale , la <strong>cassetta batteria</strong>, i <strong>parafanghi anteriori</strong>, il <strong>cofano anteriore</strong> e i <strong>sottoporta</strong>,ed allo stesso tempo si montano le portiere.<br />

<title><![CDATA[10 cars I dislike. and reasons why, of course.]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[So, I felt like writing a blog, and I can&#8217;t think of much that happened other than a slightly ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>So, I felt like writing a blog, and I can&#8217;t think of much that happened other than a slightly changed repeat of the tree fiasco of yesterday and you don&#8217;t want to read about that, so i thought I&#8217;d just make a pointless list of cars that I don&#8217;t like and why I ddon&#8217;t like them. Yay.</p>
<p>1) Porsches that are painted pink. I saw one the other day and thought &#8216;why ruin a perfectly good car with a dreadful colour?&#8217; Surely the only reason you paint a car a dreadful colour is to get noticed and with a Porsche you&#8217;ve got that anyway, rendering the whole exercise kind of pointless.</p>
<p>2) Porsches that are painted yellow. Ditto. Do people not think of the depreciation on these things???</p>
<p>3) the Daewoo/Chevrolet Matiz. Branding it a chevrolet is not going to make it cool, it&#8217;s just going to bring Chevvys image down.  It is cheap, but looks it and lots of the ones I&#8217;ve seen seem to be painted &#8216;Burnt Sienna&#8217; (a.k.a urrrrgh-ish orange)</p>
<p>4) The Mini. I may be alone in this one, but I dislike it (this is referring to the new one. The old one was fine) because it is an obvious fashion statement, and I dislike obvious fashion statement cars especially ones with a &#8216;retro image&#8217; like this one. It is also not that mini any more, so defeats the purpose of the name, and you are paying so much for the styling, as a decent one costs about the same as a decent Ford Focus and that is a much more practical car, that in my opinion looks better. It&#8217;s not even like the mini is rare. I see so many that its just nto head turning at all. If you want a mini get an old one. They might be more expensive to run, smaller and secondhand but noone buys a new mini on practicality anyway&#8230;</p>
<p>5) The Beetle. Ditto the mini. The only exception to this retro styling thing is probably the Fiat 500. I quite like that actually, however I can see I&#8217;ll like this car much less when  a few more get sold, although at least it is fairly cheap compared to the Beetle and MIni.</p>
<p>6) The Maybach. It is ostentatious, an outrageous display of wealth, from what I&#8217;ve heard not even that great unless you&#8217;ve got  a chauffeur, hideously expensive and you might as well buy an S-class mercedes. Or just go for the obvious choice of the Rolls Phantom if you really want to spend over 300 grand on a car. At least thats imposing and scary not just showy-off.</p>
<p>7) The Subaru Impreza WRX. I am not a fan of normal-ish cars with massive spoilers on the back and this is probably the worst. I also don&#8217;t like racing stripes on non-powerful cars but this is nto the worst culprit for people painting those on. Yes, I know this car has over 200 brake horsepower so its not exactly slow, but does it really need such over-the-top race styling?  I prefer things like understated hot hatches that look the same as the normal version, unless you&#8217;re going to go for the full-on supercars, which can of course get away with showy because that&#8217;s msot of their reason for being.</p>
<p> <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> The Perodua Kelisa. If you&#8217;ve only got £5000 to spend on a car then don&#8217;t buy a new one or you&#8217;ll end up with this. Be sensible and get a nice used polo or something&#8230;</p>
<p>9) Any Hummer. They are just too big. End of.</p>
<p>10) The Toyota Prius. Unfortuneately I must end on a classic target for people to criticise but it must make this list sheerly for it&#8217;s so called environmental statistics that don&#8217;t seem to add up. Fristly, the quoted figures are 65mpg. The new Polo Bluemotion can do 74.5mpg and that is a diesel and is significantyl cheaper. I know that the Prius is much bigger, but a lot of people don&#8217;t need a bigger car and if you do you could get the greenline focus which does over 60mpg.  On a road test I read recently, the Prius was out-mpg&#8217;d by a BMW 5 series, which is a much bigger car with efficient driving stuff enabled, so it shows you don&#8217;t even get the stated figure. Also, think how much of a carbon footprint the Prius must have had to be made. It is from an international company so all of the materials and labour will have been sourced from wherever is cheapest meaning high carbon from shipping, and from what I&#8217;ve heard, the Prius is worse than a lot of cars for this. The really green thing would just be to keep your old car for a few more years until it is no longer economical to run. You may be able to look down on all the &#8216;un-green&#8217; people in thier old bangers that only do 30mpg, but they&#8217;re not having the carbon footprint of importing a new car. If you&#8217;re going to buy a new car anyway, you might as well get something you like, not just something that you think will make you look green. Rant over now, sorry.</p>

<p>So, there it is, my bottom 10 list of my least favourite cars. I&#8217;ll probably think of one I&#8217;ve forgotten then&#8230; I hope you stayed with me and didn&#8217;t get bored (which you probably did as I realize I&#8217;ve moaned about the prius rather a lot, and one of these days I&#8217;ll get round to writing a less moany car blog, with the cars I do like.
