FIBA has finished the groupings of the teams participating for next year’s World Basketball Championships in Turkey. The competition will be composed of 24 territories around the world. Here is the official grouping list.

Bence en ne olacağı belli olmayan grupta yer aldık ancak bi okadarda güzel maçlar bizi bekliyor bakalım Tanjeviç yine derin rotasyonuyla(!) beklenmeyen işlere imza atabilecek mi umarım türk gibi başlayıp türk gibi bitirmeyiz…

İlk 4 sıradakiler gruplardan çıkarken son kalan 2′ye de neden geldiklerini sormak lazım bence neyse.Ancak bundan sonra durum biraz daha ilginçleşiyor FİBA’nın nedendir bilinmez o ilginç uygulamalarında biri daha devreye giriyor ilk maçlardan sonra bakalım anlayan çıkıcak mı ?.

(A) Grubu’nu ilk 4 ‘te tamamlayan ekipler ile (B) Grubu’nu ilk 4 içinde tamamlayan ekipler, (C) Grubu ile de (D) Grubu’nun ilk 4′leri, sıralamaya göre tersten eşleşerek 4-7 Eylül tarihleri arasında eleme maçları yaparak, son 8′e kalmak için mücadele edecekler.

Daha sonra şampiyonada son 8 içine giren takımlar, sıralama maçları yaparak finale gitmeye çalışacaklar.

El 15 de octubre, la Argentina presentó en Alemania el logo que representará al país como invitado de honor en la edición 2010 de la Feria Internacional del Libro de Frankfurt.  El diseñador del logo y el slogan ganadores del concurso para identificar visualmente a la Argentina en el encuentro editorial más importante del mundo es Sebastián Guerrini.

Doctor en Comunicación y Estudios de la Imagen por la Universidad de Kent (Inglaterra), Guerrini ha realizado diseños de imagen e identidad en América Latina, Estados Unidos, España, Portugal, Italia, Irlanda, Inglaterra, Suiza y Alemania. Desarrolló trabajos para Amnistía Internacional, UNICEF, UNESCO, CLACSO y Naciones Unidas, entre otras organizaciones, y el año pasado ganó el concurso internacional para el diseño de la imagen de la Organic World Foundation.

Autor de la versión gráfica del escudo nacional que usamos en el país desde hace casi una década, Guerrini diseñó, además, la marca CONICET, la magen del Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales y la identidad visual de la presidencia de la nación, ministerios y secretarías de estado. El mes pasado, el logo que diseñó para FIBA (el Festival Internacional de Teatro de Buenos Aires) tiñó de colores las calles porteñas (fotos FIBA). Freshmen John Wall and Renardo Sidney’s eligibility is under investigation. Both have been under investigation for a few months, but the public did not know about Wall’s investigation until now.

Wall’s eligibility has been researched by UK ever since they learned that his former AAU coach is a certified agent.

Brian Clifton, Wall’s former coach, was an agent with FIBA. According to their website, FIBA is the home of international basketball.  Clifton said he forfeited his license in August of last year so he could devote full attention to his AAU team.

If it is found that Wall has accepted more than $101 of benefits, he must repay the money and sit out up to 10% of the season.  If UK has 40 games, that is four games.

It is unknown at this time what the outcome of this whole situation will be.  UK will not discuss eligibility of any players.

My question is if you’re a certified agent, why should you be allowed to be an AAU coach?

Wall played for Clifton for nearly a year while he was an agent.

The game of basketball and recruiting is changing and so are the ethics and rules. So many players are recruited more during camps and AAU games and tournaments rather than high school games and tournaments.

AAU teams offer better competition for the players and another way to get their name and skills recognized. Since he was a certified agent why was he allowed to coach?

It’s easier for an outsider to look at this post and think I’m being biased and covering up for Wall. That’s not what I’m doing. I’m upset about the carelessness of Clifton, and those who decided to make him a coach even though he was a certified agent.

Don’t blame Wall. What’s he supposed to do? Run a background check on his AAU coach?

According to these initial reports, it looks as if Wall did not make a mistake, or do anything that looked out of the ordinary. He was just playing AAU basketball under someone he trusted. Little did he know that he could not engage in normal activities between a coach and player because Clifton was still a certified agent.

When the dust settles, it’s really not a huge deal. The money will be repaid and Wall will be able to make millions next year, so that’s not an issue.

Missing a few games? Not a huge deal either, but I wouldn’t tell Coach Cal that.

The thing that Cat fans have to worry about is the reputation of their program and their current coach. Even though both situations where Calipari has had wins vacated had nothing to do with himself, this will lead opposing players to call him dirty or a cheater.

This should not tarnish Calipari or the program.

My question to the basketball world, especially those who question the integrity of Wall, Calipari or UK: could you honestly say that you would pass on Wall if he was going to come to your favorite team?

No.

From what initial reports sound like, this is nobody’s fault but Clifton’s and Cat fans sure hope it stays that way.

Irving going to Duke

Yes, it would have been a big commitment if Irving had come to UK. However, Brandon Knight, the best point guard in the class of 2010 according to most recruiting sites, is still on the board.

Knight is considering UK, UConn, Florida, Kansas, Miami (Fla) and Syracuse. The 6′3″ guard won the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a junior,  and has visited both UK and UConn.

Josh Selby is ranked as the second or third best point guard in most recruiting polls. UK, Miami (Fla), Baylor, Indiana, Kansas and Syracuse are on his short list. Rivals.com has him ranked fourth top prospect overall, while scout.com has him ninth.

Other recruit to keep your eye on: Tobias Harris.

Harris would help fill the void if Patterson and/or Cousins make the leap to the NBA.

Harris is a 6′8″ power forward who is a prolific scorer for his position. He also attended Big Blue Madness this year.

Since Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins are projected to be picked in the top 20 of the 2010 draft, Harris is being pursued to fill the hole.

I’m impressed with moves he uses in the low block and his touch outside and mid-range game. Adding about 10 more pounds of muscle would make him a great NBA prospect if he continues to polish his outside game.

At the college level, he will create so many problems defensively. Most who guard him will not be as fast as him, and are not used to guarding the outside shot.

Seeing names like Knight, Selby and Harris considering UK is a great sign for Cat fans. It’s a sign that their program is on its way back to national prominence.

A FIBA Américas anunciou as nações que estão entre as que provalmente sediarão o evento, que trará o basquete de ambos os sexos, e entre elas está o Brasil. Até o dia 4 de dezembro, outras nações podem se candidatar.

Após essa data, os países inscritos receberão as visitas do comitê executivo da entidade, para verificar as condições de infra-estrutura. O data que acabará as visitas e será a ununciado o país sede, será no dia 25 de junho de 2010.

El Madrid de Messina sucumbió ante los Jazz de Sloan. No es una sorpresa, pero si sorprende la facilidad con la que se han deshecho del equipo blanco. En los últimos años, en los partidos de octubre entre FIBAs y NBAs, los yanquis sufrían la escasez de preparación y la extra-motivación de los FIBA. Ayer no fue el caso. El Madrid, sin Reyes, y con Prigioni por debajo del 50%, no fueron rival. Tampoco Utah colaboró en el festín fiba, ya que con Sloan….bromas las justas. El (ya histórico) técnico mormón es lo más parecido a un técnico europeo que hay en la NBA. Y así ha montado a sus Jazz.

El resultado fue de +22 para los americanos, siendo igualado el primer cuarto, y maquillador el último. Los Jazz empezaron con Williams-Brewer-Mattwes-Boozer-Okur, pero el mejor fue Millsap (20 puntos).

Que el baloncesto español ha rozado la perfección durante los últimos años no tiene lugar a dudas, y la FIBA ha dado fe de ello. España, actual campeona de Europa y del Mundo, ha demostrado en más de una ocasión por qué es la ñba, por qué muchos de los jugadores españoles han volado a Estados Unidos y sobre todo, por qué su potencial parece no tener límites.

Ahora, la FIBA ha publicado el ranking tanto europeo como mundial y España, por delante de Rusia y de Grecia, es la número uno del viejo continente y en Polonia, a pesar de su mal comienzo, demostró que cuando quiere, no hay quien la tosa.

Sin embargo, hay un puesto que España está preparada para ocupar y para el que parece que aún no le ha llegado el turno. En el ranking mundial, es Estados Unidos quien ha echado raíces en la primera posición, por delante de la ñba, y con una diferencia de puntos considerable.

Durante décadas a EEUU no había quien le tosiera, nadie podía poner en duda la calidad de una selección que contaba con los mejores jugadores del mundo. Pero ha llovido mucho desde entonces, y la generación llamada a hacer historia no hace más que romper moldes y superarse a sí misma.

Así que, yo me pregunto. ¿Es real la diferencia que aparece en este ranking? ¿No demostró España en Pekín que, con su progresión durante los últimos años, también se merece esa primera posición?

El caso es que España es la mejor selección en Europa y, con el permiso de los árbitros, podríamos ser los mejores del mundo.

THE NBA IS BAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!

And, you know, we here at Pick and Pop try to keep it as fresh and quirky as possible.  So, my plan for the next 32 (or some odd) days is to not break down how a team will do.  That’s for sportswriters with degrees and such, although I guess a night before the season tips off Colin and I will do something like that. 

Instead, I’m giving every single player in the league, even some guys that won’t even make the roster, a little ink.  Because not all players are created (and adored) equally by yours truly, some will have much longer anecdotes/analysis or what have you than others.  Case and point: would it be fair to give Dirk Nowitzki and Adam Morrison the same amount of space?  I haven’t gotten that far yet, but I’m willing to bet I won’t do that.

I guess to make sure the pecking order of the NBA isn’t completely ruined, I’m going to go in ascending order in terms of how I predict the teams will finish.  We stay in the NBA’s lower echelon (wondering if things will eventually stop looking so putrid) with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Michael Redd

It’s amazing what you can do with a little hardwork and dedication.  Sure, Redd was a horse in college, but while NBA scouts saw him as someone who could fill it up, they questioned, of all things, his ability to consistently hit jumpers.  That seems really funny almost ten years later, doesn’t it?  Not only has he learned to hit jumpers “consistently”, he’s become arguably the best jump shooter in the NBA.  If he comes back healthy this season, especially with the Bucks in a talent recession with the loss of Richard Jefferson and Ramon Sessions, Redd may lead the NBA in scoring… and, despite his strong ties to Christianity, on-court curse words.  I can see it now: “Damnit, Brandon!  Look at me when you’re passing the ball!!!”

The Other Starters

Andrew Bogut

Bogut really earned my respect as a basketball player during the 2006 FIBA tournament.  I felt lukewarm about his potential as a pro prior to his overmatched Aussie team going against the U.S., but I literally watched this man play every single position on the floor from one to five.  It’s like he would win the tip, and the “point guard” would give it right back to him to run the offense.  Even if it was in Milwaukee, he averaged about the quietest double-double in the NBA last season.  He’s got good touch around the basket, good floor vision, and, most importantly when it comes to NBA big men, he’s not soft.  I like him for about 16 and 11 this year.

Luke Ridnour

PROP BET ALERT!  PROP BET ALERT!  Over/under on 40 games before Brandon Jennings becomes the starting point guard.  I’ll gladly take the under.  Jokes aside, Ridnour may be inconsistent from the perimeter and a horrible defender, but that boy can move the rock.  One of these days he’ll be a good back-up point guard for a good team.

Luc Richard Mbah a Moute

I shall officially annoint thee “Black Najera”… more athleticism, far less range.  Again, this is a guy you want coming off the bench in spurts, not a guy you’re forced to play 30 minutes a game.

Hakim Warrick 

Instead of talking about Warrick’s tweener-trumping athleticism, it’s time for a short rant.  I just want to let ESPN.com that on Milwaukee’s depth chart Warrick apparently still plays for no one and Amir Johnson is their starting four man… which would be nice except Johnson was traded to the Raptors A MONTH AGO!!!  ESPN needs to get on their game if they want our link business.  One more strike, ESPN.  Just one more…

The Bench (at least according to ESPN.com assuming I can trust that these guys are still alive)

Brandon Jennings

As much as I love Stephen Curry, I really felt like Jennings would have been a better fit for the Warriors.  Instead of getting a pure (albeit very raw) point guard, they get more of a hybrid guy, and while the Warriors want him to come in and play, we all know what happens to hybrid guys.  While I pray that Steph-Cur is the exception to the rule, I’ll be keeping a close eye on Jennings.  We’ll see if his little European excursion turned him into a better player.  If it did, then the Bucks got a steal at number ten.  If not, well at least he has a passport.

Charlie Bell 

Funny how he ended up being a solid role player in the NBA and his running mate, former lottery pick teammate Mateen Cleaves ended up being a world traveler.  Bell has been surprisingly efficient offensively, and if I was creating an ideal basketball team Bell would probably have a place on it.  

Dan Gadzuric 

He’s one of the only basketball players I can ever think of who let people pronounce his name completely wrong for several years before finally correcting them.  I still have that problem with “Cherot”, but I’m such a nice guy that I feel bad for correcting people.  Maybe I should take the Gadzuric approach.

Kurt Thomas

I can’t find the video, but my favorite moment of the Kobe Doin’ Work documentary was when Kobe caught an inbounds pass and, in the same motion, managed to release the shot just as Thomas was coming over to swat it… and had time to say, “Gotcha!” as he watched the ball slice through the net.  It was funnier each of the three times they replayed the moment, too.

Carlos Delfino

Even though Delfino has been a staple in Argentina’s strong showings in international competition and despite a solid season last year, I keep waiting for him to be better.  Maybe I shouldn’t hold my breath.

Joe Alexander

I don’t know about Alexander.  While it’s true that he was a rookie last year and behind Jefferson, you’d figure he would at least crack the rotation, especially on a team that’s not so great.  I won’t use the “B” word quite yet, particularly because he’s athletic and he has some touch, but if he doesn’t play at least 20 minutes a game this season, I might start spelling it out.

Francisco Elson

I do these previews not because I’m trying to gain fans, not because I’m trying to get my name out there, not because I’m trying to get someone from ESPN.com to notice me and facilitate me getting my career started… but because I love learning new things.  And, I just learned the Bucks will be the only team in the NBA this season with two back-up centers from the Netherlands.  Awesome factoid!

Jodie Meeks

If Meeks had stayed in school, the Kentucky Wildcats would have definitely won a national championship that would inevitably get stricken from the record books because of shady recruiting practices five years later.  It may still happen, but only time will tell.

Roko Ukic

I pride myself on having an opinion on every NBA player, but I have to admit I haven’t seen Ukic play, and if I haven’t chances are you haven’t.  So, let’s learn together.

One minute into that video and I already like him better than Ridnour.  If you were like me and watched the entire thing, is there anything funnier than CDR from the Nets tripping like that?  It’s official: I’m hopping on the Ukic bandwagon!

Ersan Ilyasova

Ilyasova has a tough act to follow on YouTube… watching…watching…(asleep)…zzzzzzz…. okay, enough of that.  I’m going to go out on the limb and say, based on the video, that he could end up eventually starting for a bad team one day because of his shooting ability and length.  You heard it first.

Walter Sharpe

El sueño, en manos de Navarro, ya se ha hecho realidad

Y la han paseado por todo el mundo hasta bañarse (y bañarnos al resto) de gloria y oro. La Ñ de España, la Ñ de la ÑBA, lo ha vuelto a hacer y ha alcanzadoo con su perseverancia y su ambición la última cota que aún le quedaba por coronar. Hoy ya somos Campeones de Europa en Baloncesto y eso nunca antes lo habían oído nuestros oídos. Las seis intentonas anteriores nuestros periódicos habían escrito bajo la decepción y la amargura de la oportunidad perdida y ayer alcanzamos el séptimo cielo. Desde él escribimos hoy extasiados tras un nuevo éxito en plena Edad de Oro del Deporte Español.

No hay mejor manera de cerrar un círculo virtuoso como el descrito por la Selección Española de Básket. Hoy somos campeones de Europa en esa disciplina y en fútbol, lo que nos confirma como una potencia en los deportes. Porque antes de Europa, los ‘Golden Boys’ dominaron el mundo desde Japón y desafiaron cara a cara a los seres superiores en Pekín. Los Gasol, Rudy, Navarro, Garbajosa, Reyes, Ricky, Mumbrú, Cabezas, Raúl, Llul y Claver, con todo el equipo humano que tienen detrás han derrochado talento, casta y pundonor para ganar a sus rivales por aplastamiento en un campeonato en el que partían como máximos favoritos.

A la ÑBA le costó un poco digerir esa presión al inicio, aunque tras dos cachetes a tiempo y después de lavar los trapos sucios en casa la situación se volteó. A la hora de la verdad nadie compitió como nosotros, nadie luchó como nosotros, nadie acertó como nosotros y nadie ganó como nosotros. De paliza en paliza desde los cuartos de final, nadie ha sido capaz de tosernos en la cara. Cuando nos plantamos en la final íbamos rebosantes de confianza y seguridad, sedientos de venganza. Porque en ella reeditaríamos el debut, donde Serbia nos devolvió a la Tierra, aunque esta vez teníamos la pluma en nuestras manos con la que reescribir la historia.

Era una cuenta personal, una rendición pública y notoria tras lo ocurrido en Madrid dos años atrás, y toda España lo sabía. Por eso la afición no falló (ellos también son la Ñ), por eso los jugadores tampoco lo hicieron. Arropados por los ánimos de nuestros emigrantes, de sus familiares y de los aficionados al básket en general, la ÑBA no dio opción a la sorpresa. En apenas nueve minutos ya habían decantado el marcador (24-14) y en sólo 20 ya se habían asegurado la victoria (52-29). Fue un monólogo insultante, con un Pau Gasol excelso que fue coronado como el MVP (mejor jugador del torneo), del que también fue máximo anotador y reboteador del mismo. El chaparrón que cayó ayer en Katowice no mojó sus calles pero sí abnegó las ideas de los serbios. Impotentes ante la clase magistral impartida por los chicos de Scariolo.

Éste también tiene su cuota de protagonismo, porque ha sabido revertir una situación complicada para reconducir a un grupo que no podía morir de éxito, sino perdurar en la gloria. Tanto él como el equipo han sabido adaptarse, unos han cedido en defensa y otros han dejado hacer en ataque. Así, España apostaba por defensas largas y extenuantes, cargadas de presión, pero no renegaba de la velocidad en el ataque, de correr y presionar, de impresionar y gustarse. El cambio se produjo cuando los chicos comenzaron a divertirse, en aquel parcial de 23-0 a Lituania en el que nos dimos cuenta que algo había cambiado. Fue el instante en que Rudy culminó un Alley-Hop, el primero del campeonato. España, había vuelto.

Y la tormenta arreció con fuerza desde entonces. Aunque la ÑBA no se mojó en ningún charco porque a la hora de la verdad saltamos más que nadie para coronarnos como los amos de la canasta. Por una vez fuimos grandes, muy grandes. Y entiendan esto por el buen sentido. Me refiero a que tiramos de experiencia  y sangre fría para que no nos temblara el pulso. Hicimos un torneo de menos a más, donde la efectividad no casó bien con los errores y despites propios de los novatos; donde los inventos con gaseosa dejaron sitio a los primeros espadas cuando la cosa se puso seria y donde la victoria fue el único camino posible cuando ya no había marcha atrás. Así fuimos Campeones de Europa, después de haber sido Campeones del Mundo 2006, Subcampeones de Europa 2007 y Subcampeones Olímpicos en 2008. La mejor generación del baloncesto nacional y una de las mejores a nivel internacional ha cerrado el círculo rematándolo con trazos dorados, aunque a buen seguro dentro de él todavía caben más títulos. Porque recuerden, somos la Ñ,  y ésta ya resuena en todo el mundo.

Qué decir, joer seamos sinceros, yo estuve hace una semana diciendo que aquí estaba pasando algo, que no parecía un equipo, que parecía que se llevaban mal, o no muy bien, que si juegan o no juegan a la pocha, que si van algunos por enchufe que si… bueno eso puede ser o no verdad; pero la verdad es que… cual es la verdad? Me lo pregunto y no se explicarlo. Porque sigo pensando que Garbajosa, que Munmbru, que… Claver… que si la pocha… pero entonces? Bueno, pues pienso que en Pekin fue Carlos Jimenez, capitán, oh mi capitán el que llamó al orden, el que dijo, chavales no hagáis el capullo que es mi ultima convocatoria, y los chicos se pusieron las pilas. Qué ha pasado? Era una selección sin alma, sin acierto, sin… sinceramente sólo puedo pensar en que algo pasó, en que alguien que no estaba muy involucrado o que si lo estaba pero no lo parecía llamo al orden y dijo, chavales he venido a ganar esto, me he jodido el dedo y las vacaciones por ganar esto, no voy a volverme después de esto sin ganar el oro porque a ti te ponen mucho, a ti te rotan cuando no toca o lo que sea… ganamos el oro y después hablamos… lo que pasa es que ahora ya no se hablará, como le dije a Trecet un día, el día antes de un partido cuando dijo que iba a levantar la alfombra y a preguntas de otra persona dijo que bien se podían esperar unas horas a pegar la rajada, la rajada ya no se producirá, porque no toca, porque no corresponde o sencillamente (no lo creo) porque no había nada de que rajar.
Bajo mi punto de vista Gasol, Pau, ya es una persona madura, es una estrella, el sólo ha lidiado la recompostura de este equipo, ha dicho a sus compañeros que habia que hacer, ha mirado al técnico y le ha indicado que estaba haciendo mal, y que tenia que hacer para que todo funcionase… y como debe ser cuando uno da ejemplo, y cuando uno es respetado ese ejemplo se sigue y Gasol fue el primero en dar ejemplo, el primero en dejar esa actitud semipasiva en defensa para empezar a defender al suyo y a cuatro más, empezó a dar miradas de complicidad, saludos de energía, empezó a gasolinizar el resto de compañeros, al técnico… empezó a ganar el Europeo… porque más que nunca que yo haya visto una competición de selecciones este torneo lo ha ganado Gasol, que si que juegan más, que si, que han defendido, que si, que han anotado, que si… pero que todo eso lo han hecho tirados por un tipo grande llamado Gasol, por cierto NO va a ser el Principe de Asturias, ya no se cuando lo será.
Todo empezó un día en que Gasol dejo de ser un coladero para empezar, a hacer ayudas a todo el mundo, porque defiendes más fuerte a tu hombre cuando sabes que si se va un compañero le taponará o le dificultará, eso hace que seas más agresivo; muchas veces se pide a los exteriores agresividad, pero de que sirve si los interiores son unas mamas que a cualquiera le dejan hacer una bandeja, de nada; todo empezó cuando el equipo tuvo conciencia cierta de quien era el jugador que lideraba el proyecto, todo empezó cuando el técnico fue consciente de que iba a ser más rentable que 1 se adecuara a 10 u 11 o 12 y no que esos 12 se adecuaran a 1.
En definitiva, gracias Gasol, gracias por decidir que ibas a poner toda la carne en el asador, gracias por decidir que como lider de este equipo tenias que demostrarlo no sólo en el campo sino también fuera de el, gracias por enseñar a un puñado de buenos jugadores que podían hacerlo, gracias por enseñar a un técnico, sobrepasado por los acontecimientos, que a veces las cosas son más sencillas de lo que parece… gracias por ganar este Eurobasket y compartirlo con todos los que somos aficionados a este deporte. Gracias!!

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA)  The Greek Basketball team reached the Q-finals of the EuroBasket 2009 tournament, which is taking place in Poland (September 7-20, 2009).
After four wins and two defeats in the qualifying round, Greece will face either Turkey or Slovenia on September 18, to qualify for the semi-finals.

Francia, con pleno de victorias, lidera el grupo E de esta segunda fase de clasificación y ya espera rival. Ayer venció a Grecia, y la victoria de Rusia deja a los helenos en la tercera posición del grupo. La cuarta clasificada será Croacia que en un partido a vida o muerte ganó a Alemania. Los tres partidos disputados ayer se solventaron por un escaso margen de dos puntos lo que habla de lo igualado del torneo.

Así, las opciones para España pasan siempre por ganar a Polonia y esperar acontecimientos, aunque para no ser cuartos debería darse la derrota de Serbia ante Lituania, algo improbable pues los lituanos no se juegan nada.
