“What is a pomegranate?” ”How do I eat one of those?!” and “Why is it

“What is a pomegranate?” ”How do I eat one of those?!” and “Why is it good for me?” are a few things that may have popped into your head upon reading the title of this blog. Here, I intend to answer these question and inspire you to love pomegranate.

Firstly, “What is pomegranate?”

Pomegranate is a fruit. It grows on trees and it tastes sweet. On the inside, it looks like a massive raspberry.

Secondly, “How do I eat one of those?!”

Generally, people do not eat the pulp or skin- they eat the red seeds on the inside of the plant. Getting the seeds out of the membrane can take an annoyingly long time if you don’t know the tricks, so I’m going to teach you them.

1. Cut slits in the peel of the pomegranate. Let your pomegranate soak. I usually cut mine open a few hours before I want to eat it, however if you cut it and don’t end up eating it until the next day, do not be alarmed. your seeds will be fine.

2. Now that your fruit is soaked, the peel will be much softer. When your ready to eat it, you can just tear it apart into sections. Again, if you don’t want to eat it all at this stage, that is ok. Put it in the refrigerator in a sealed container so it doesn’t dry out!

3. Now you can start tearing it apart! Keep the water in your bowl- that’s another trick. As you pick the seeds and membrane away from each other, the seeds will sink and the membrane will float!

4. When you are done, drain off the water and peel and you can eat them! How easy was that?:)

Thirdly, “Why is this good for me?

Do you have a hobby? I do. It’s snacking. Whereas some people may say “Hmm, I’m bored. I think I’ll read a book!” I say “Hmm, I’m bored. I think I’ll have a snack!” This is why I snack healthy things like pomegranate. I believe the reason people snack when they are bored is simply the motion of eating. Continually picking up a chip and putting it in your mouth over and over is time consuming and occupies you. Why not do this with pomegranate fruit instead of chips? In my opinion, it takes the same amount of time for me to clean and eat one full pomegranate as it would take me to eat a bag of chips- however, the nutrition in a pomegranate is much more significant. (100g of pomegranate is ~80 calories; 100g of plain potato chips is ~530 calories.)

Now some nutritional facts: (I promise to keep this simple as to not overwhelm anyone.) One pomegranate totals approximately 200 nutritious calories (rather than empty calories which are not healthy, but are filling), only 3g of fat, and almost no sodium (not even 1% recommended daily intake (RDI).) Fiber: awesome for your digestive system. There’s a bunch of it in pomegranate seeds (almost half your RDI.) Your heart: reduces blood pressure and lowers risk of heart disease. Your teeth: fights against dental plague (who knew?) Antioxidant: oxidants kill your cells. Antioxidants stop that, resulting in less issues in your body long term.

To conclude, the main reason I love pomegranate is because I believe pomegranate is a good snack food. A snack food essentially must fill the role of occupying you, or allowing you to eat a lot of it at once, easily. Pomegranate gives you nutrient rich calories, while filling the role of a snack food. They are fairly cheap ($2-3 each) which is very close to the cost of a bag of chips. You also can pre clean them if you want them to be accessible to you throughout the day! Now, go buy a pomegranate and try it out.

*all nutritional facts are from Wikipedia.

*I compare pomegranate to potato chips simply because I believe the fruit makes a good substitute for chips, which already is a common snack food.

Hello, and welcome to this week’s edition of “Weaving Rocks”! When last we parted,

Hello, and welcome to this week’s edition of “Weaving Rocks”! When last we parted, I had just started weaving with some brown yarns. The project on the loom will eventually be used for handbags – the size and style is yet to be determined! (This is me being wild and crazy and spontaneous… It’s true, I have control issues…)

It’s an end, posing over the fabric!

Because this will be cut into pieces and sewn together, the ends can just lay around. Normally, I would hand weave the ends back into the fabric for the finished piece. For this sort of thing, it’s not necessary!

Using multiple yarns together!

Just, yum…

Weaving certainly isn’t the cheapest art form. But thankfully, once you acquire your equipment (and you can buy great used equipment!), you shouldn’t need to replace anything. For instance, I currently own about 5 different shuttles. Unless I get into a really unique type of weaving, I should be able to get by with using those same shuttles forever! Then, it’s just a matter of setting the yarn budget!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-1521" alt="The rag shuttle's doing it's job!

A little closer…

Slowly, I’m transitioning into lighter colors on the loom. Leaving behind the chocolates and heading into the tans. (Every time I mention “chocolate”, my mouth waters just a little bit! Kind of a Pavlovian thing…)

Lightening up a bit!

Dear yarn, You will become fantastic fabric shortly.

It’s always satisfying to see the empty cones and tubes while working through a project! In many cases, I’ll start with a pound of yarn. Do you know how long it might take to use an entire pound of fine, wool yarn? Much longer than you’d think! And depending upon the color, could be painfully long! Like, bequeath-it-to-my-family long!

A view through the loom

The picture above is a great perspective starting with the fabric in the foreground. Watching the yarn move straight through the reed and the heddles. And finally, seeing the yarn wrap over the back! It sort of simplifies the millions of steps into a single goal!

Living on the edge…

Ah, sweet progress…

You never really know how a project is going to look! The need to lay out every detail is always pressing. Consequently, there are many hours spent in the planning phase. But, in the end, it’s completely magical how it comes together – whether it’s according to the plan, or not!

Caught in between…

I believe I see some lovely cream-colored yarns on the horizon! Are you excited? Me too! Have a good one and I’ll talk to you soon…

Well, maybe our kids have replaced the lyrics of Alice Cooper with the likes of One Direction and Taylor Swift, but the story remains the same. No more pencils, no more books, and a lot more freedom to eat, play and watch TV as children please.

It’s important as parents to provide a wide variety of healthy, nutritious foods at home. By improving access to healthy food options and limiting unhealthy selections, you can feel more confident knowing that your children are consuming well-balanced meals and snacks at home. As a 12-year-old, my days usually started with a big bowl of sugary, sweetened cereal, followed by mac ‘n cheese, hot dogs and an unhealthy dose of soap operas. While I was also very active with swimming, riding bikes and jumping on trampolines, my diet certainly had room for improvement. It’s never too early or too late to teach your kids about nutrition and well-balanced meals. The simplest way to illustrate a healthy meal is using the plate method. The plate method encourages you to fill half your plates with fruits and vegetables, one fourth with lean protein and one fourth with grains (preferably whole grains).

Here is a list of examples to help your kids put together healthy, well-balanced meals.

Grains:

Whole wheat bread

Whole grain cereal

Whole wheat crackers

Brown or wild rice

Oatmeal

Whole wheat or corn tortilla

Popcorn

Proteins:

Chicken

Fish,

Turkey

Lean meat

Eggs

Nuts/seeds

Peanut butter

Beans

Dairy:

Low-fat milk

Low-fat yogurt

Low-fat cheese/string cheese

Smoothies

Fruits:

Apples

Bananas

Oranges

Grapes

Blueberries

Strawberries

Pineapple

Peaches

Pears

Vegetables:

Green salad

Tomatoes

Mushrooms

Fresh green beans

Carrots

Celery

Broccoli

Cauliflower

Red, yellow, green bell peppers

Cucumbers

Sweetened cereals like Frosted Flakes and Lucky Charms are not the best start for the day because they lack many important nutrients and contain excessive amounts of added sugars. Here’s a tip for weaning kids away from these sugar-packed cereal varieties: encourage kids to mix a healthier cereal such as Cheerios, Bran Flakes, Shredded Mini Wheats or other high-fiber variety into their favorite cereal. This will help reduce the portion size of the sugary cereal and help improve the nutrient intake of fiber. Apple chunks, blueberries, banana slices, chopped nuts or dried fruit can be easily added to oatmeal to make breakfast more well-rounded. Whole grain tortillas spread with peanut butter and banana slices or eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa and beans make two great protein-packed breakfasts.

Lunch meals tend to be heavy on the starches. A turkey sandwich, chips, granola bar and dessert were the typical items packed in my lunch when going to summer camp.

The results of this lunch meal: Starch=5, Protein=1, and Fruits, Vegetables and Dairy=0.

To make this lunchbox healthier, we can swap the chips with low-fat yogurt, trade the granola bar for carrot and celery sticks with one tablespoon of low-fat ranch, and include a clementine for the dessert. Mac ‘n cheese is okay to eat still, but it should be featured as a side item rather than the entrée. Pre-cutting vegetables and fruits and measuring individual containers of peanut butter, hummus, yogurt or low-fat ranch for dips can make healthy selections much more accessible.

Another valuable lesson to learn early on in life is that snacks do not equal desserts. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be fun. Try to create snacks that include at least two food groups. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Homemade trail mix with nuts, dried fruit and whole grain cereal

Celery logs topped with peanut butter and raisins

Small oranges with low-fat string cheese

Slice apples to make a mini peanut butter, granola sandwiches

Top a whole grain cracker with low-fat cream cheese and grape halves

Mix yogurt with fresh fruit chunks

It is recommended that kids spend no more than two hours per day watching TV, playing video games, on the computer, etc. If you find your kids do spend excessive amounts of time in front of the TV, try setting limits like “TV may only be watched from 1:00-2:30.” Physical activity should always be encouraged in a positive light and never used as a form of punishment. Encourage safe, outdoor activities; it’s summer time after all!

Set the scene: You’re enjoying a comfortable evening watching movies on the couch with your fi

Set the scene:

You’re enjoying a comfortable evening watching movies on the couch with your fiance and dog, where you have to persistently tell your pup to stop licking his butt while on the couch. You get up to, idk, grab a cup of water maybe. When you get back to the couch you have to move pooch who has somehow, as dogs do, migrated to your spot. As you move pup to sit down you feel something on your shins, causing you to immediately regret wearing basketball shorts instead of pj pants, and all of a sudden you smell that rotten fish smell everywhere. You immediately get on Google to figure out what the hell just happened.

^ How I found out about the military weapons in dogs’ asses called anal glands.

Your dog’s anal (or skunk) glands fill up over time and are meant to release (express)when they poop, causing you no more trouble than dog poop normally does. It’s also the reason they sniff one another’s butts, because to them they all smell different and they want to know who what smell belongs to, for whatever dog world reason. As far as I’ve learned the only real purpose of them is to mark territory/keep unwanted animals away (may be more useful to you than you think), but it’s not typical practice to get them removed.

It’s common in growing puppies to find anal glands have trouble expressing, and some dogs even hold onto this into and throughout adulthood. First know that your dog is fine, you’re just in for a minor annoyance and extra maintenance from time to time.

If you smell the rotten fish and your dog licks his butt/scoots a lot, your pup is having trouble expressing naturally and is trying to handle it his/herself. The result is a smelly house, and maybe some tonsillitis if you don’t take care of it.

Solution

Add more fiber to your dog’s diet. This will help to better solidify waste and make a more efficient impact on the glands during exit, hopefully fixing the problem. There are both high fiber treats and high fiber dog food that you can buy. If your dog’s food is homemade and you want to keep it that way add some leafy greens to the mix.

Whenever your pup/dog is having trouble you will notice it ahead of time with the scooting and licking. Take your pup to the vet to get them expressed, or express them yourself (glove and squeeze). At the vet it’s really cheap (about $10 at mine) and it’s worth it because you don’t have to smell it or risk it getting on you, and your dog remains safe from tonsillitis which is considerably more expensive.

When it comes to repairing your foundation walls, finding the right solution can be a daunting task.

When it comes to repairing your foundation walls, finding the right solution can be a daunting task. Depending on the severity of your issue, the right fix may cost thousands of dollars and countless invasive, laborious hours.

For decades traditional repair methods like steel beams and wall anchors ruled the realm. Homeowners would hire foundation contractors to come out, break up their floors, drill giant holes in their walls, and dig out gaping trenches out in the backyard.

While traditional methods like these are still popular today, they are very invasive and generally have to be redone/readjusted in a home’s lifetime.

In today’s technologically savvy environment, a new solution is available to homeowners with bowing and cracked foundation walls. Carbon fiber, while it has been around for decades now, is being used more and more in people’s homes to repair their foundation walls.

Carbon fiber is permanently effective on bowing walls, and holds a tensile strength 10X that of steel. So where steel, over time, will bend and shift, carbon fiber stays put! Kits can be purchased for homeowners who prefer to save contractor costs and do the job themselves, as installation is relatively simple!

Losing weight doesn’t have to be boring when you focus on living foods. What does this mean? Simply by making sure your plate reflects a range of colours, you’ll naturally create more balanced and healthful menus complete with a range of living foods.

What are living foods? They are re live, colorful, fresh and raw – fruits, vegetables and salads!

Let’s Look At The Positives

1. Colorful foods have no preservatives and no added color!

2. Provide an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre, water and trace elements.

3. Have a high water content – an excellent source of hydration for the body.

4. Are visually appetizing.

5. Their firm textures demand a good chew, so we eat them more slowly and feel full afterwards.

6. Are quickly and easily processed and assimilated by the body – less work for the digestive system.

7. Are safer – contain less undesirable man-made chemicals.

8. Are as nature intended (unlike processed, pre-packaged modern fast foods!)

9. Are pure energy – living food.

Consuming Cooked Foods

1. Heat destroys the vitalizing nutrients in colorful foods. So much so that sometimes, you may as well be eating cardboard for all the good it does your body!

2. The effectiveness of fibre in cooked fresh foods is reduced – vegetables that are floppy and overcooked pass through the body with a reduced ‘cleansing’ action.

3. If you cook vegetables, always steam them lightly and aim to retain their ‘crunch’!

4. Cooked vegetables tend to turn out soft and therefore require less chewing, which means they are usually eaten more quickly, so are less satisfying.

5. Heat also destroys the enzymes in fresh foods, which are essential for digestion. This means the body has to tap into its own precious supply of enzymes to support the digestive process.

High carb, low carb, no carb, good carb, bad carb? Raise your hand if you’re confused about ca

High carb, low carb, no carb, good carb, bad carb?

Raise your hand if you’re confused about carbs.

Let’s get straight to the point. Does your body NEED carbs? YES!

When carbs are digested and absorbed, they form glucose.

Glucose is the primary fuel for the body. It gives you energy you can feel and see the results of, like rocking your morning workout. And it does so much more on the inside of your body that you can’t see.

The cells in your body depend on glucose to function properly. It’s the preferred fuel for your brain, red blood cells and nervous system. And your body needs glucose to burn fat efficiently.

So can we agree that carbs are important?

Great! Now I can Load Up on White Bread and Chips! – Wrong!

Darn! There are good carbs AND bad carbs.

What are Good Carbs and Where do they Come From?

The bulk of good carbs come from plants. They grow naturally.

Grains – whole wheat flour, bulgar (cracked wheat), rolled oats, whole corn meal, brown rice

legumes – beans, peas, lentils

fruits

vegetables

We also get carbohydrates from milk.

A good carb also has a high fiber content. Although your body can’t digest fiber, it has many health benefits!

It helps reduce the risk of: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease

It helps your system run smoothly (Yes, I’m referring to those digestion issues).

What are bad carbs?

Processed or refined food.

What is a processed or refined food?

Think white. White bread, white rice, and many pastas. None of these are a good source of nutrition. But why?

There isn’t a ‘white’ grain. White flour is milled from a natural grain, like wheat. And as far as we know, all rice starts out brown, (Cambridge World History of Food, published by the Cambridge University Press). In both cases, this means it’s processed to remove the outer husk, bran and germ to leave the the largest middle portion of the grain kernel which is high in starch. The portions that are removed contain much of the dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and nutrient content.

What does ‘Enriched’ Mean? It Sounds Healthy!!

Enriched White Rice

Manufacturers add back, or ‘enrich’, the product with some nutrients that were removed during processing (iron, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin). However, they usually don’t add back dietary fiber or the other nutrients lost (Vitamin B6, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc).

Yes, ‘enriched’ sounds healthy, but the ‘white’ product, processed from the ‘white’ grain has far less nutritional value than the original whole grain source.

Other processed foods include pretzels, chips, crackers, cookies and numerous other yummy treats. They provide lots of calories, but no nutrition.

So What’s the ‘Right’ Amount of Carbs?

The RDA for carbohydrates is 130 grams per day, but most Americans eat far more than this. An acceptable range is 45-65% of total calories from carbs.

What if I Eat Too Many Carbs?

Eating ‘too many’ and the wrong kind of carbs can contribute to weight gain, poor nutrient intake and tooth decay.

What if I Don’t Eat Enough Carbs?

In the absence of carbs, the body will break down stored fat and convert it into energy. This actually sounds good, doesn’t it? Some popular low carb diets are based on this! However, when the body is depleted of carbs for a prolonged period, there is the concern of developing a condition called Ketosis. (A ketone is a compound produced by the liver to help metabolize fat. If ketone levels become too high, the blood becomes acidic). Promoters of low carb diets say this condition isn’t dangerous, however, not everyone agrees. Some argue your liver and kidneys may be at risk.

At any rate, providing the body with a minimum of 50 – 100 grams of carbs per day can prevent ketosis.

Don’t be Afraid of Carbs, Just Choose Wisely!

I believe that carbs are an essential part of a healthy diet. The trick is to make educated choices.

Choose a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. The ChooseMyPlate.gov website suggests you fill half your plate with these!

When choosing breads, cereal, rice, etc. look for terms such as whole wheat, whole grain, rolled oats and brown rice. This indicates less or no processing, more nutrients and a healthier you!

You know…I actually had a good day today! I had a good (tasty and healthy) breakfast, a snack, a substantial lunch, another snack…and dinner at China Buffet. I thought about everything that I ate today. By some grace of God, I didn’t succumb to the voice inside my head saying “eat your children’s chocolate that they got at a birthday party”.

I have been peeing like a pregnant race horse today…yep, drinking LOTS of water. I am trying to drink water constantly throughout the day. It is recommended during the 24 Day Challenge.

I have not magically lost 50 lbs in a day…but I can honestly say I feel good! I had a good day, all day.

Cheers to taking caring of your self!

Nite nite,

Beets are filled with nutrients like boron, magnesium, manganese, folic acid, potassium and a wee bi

Beets are filled with nutrients like boron, magnesium, manganese, folic acid, potassium and a wee bit of vitamin C. They are also high in fiber. But there is something else that resides in the pigment of this amazing vegetable. That vivid color that leaves its mark in your stools and urine is a very powerful antioxidant. It is called betacyanin. This compound has very strong anti-cancer effect.

The freshest beets are the best tasting. Sweet like sugar. In fact, they are an excellent source of concentrated sugar.

Cut off the greens as soon as the beets arrive in the kitchen. Otherwise, the leaves take moisture from the root, drying it out. You can store beets uncooked in the refrigerated for up to 21 days. Beets greens are excellent to sauté with olive oil. Add pepper flakes, some Nu-Salt (or regular salt) and right before serving, sprinkle with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano (brand of Parmesan) cheese. The flavor will knock you over!

Beets are easily boiled, roasted, sautéed or steamed. Immediately peel this vegetable after cooking to keep the sweet juice from bleeding out. This prevents both loss of nutrients and beet fluids.

In Hypertension. 2008;51:617-619, a study reported that beets decrease blood pressure. Resistance of blood vessel walls cause pressure to increase or decrease. When nitric acid is released by these blood vessel walls, blood volume expands and blood pressure goes down. This is called vasodilation (dilation of the blood vessel). Beets contain nitrates, which the body turns into nitric acid promoting reduced blood pressure throughout the circulatory system. If juicing daily, beets would be a great addition with celery to continually bring blood pressure down naturally.

Beets may also be protective against liver injury. Studies show improvements in diabetic patients with blood glucose control. Diabetic’s ability to make or produce proper insulin may be impaired in the liver. Fatty deposits in the liver cells are prevalent in diabetics. The betacyanin in beets help limit this fatty deposition. This is also true in alcoholics and those with liver disease. We should all make beets at least a part of our weekly diet.

Borscht–Soup Made With Beets

As I kid, I remember getting served canned beets. Don’t ever remember going beyond the first bite. In college, I started to really appreciate that fresh beets were so delicious. We used them in salads and sometimes with cabbage julienne into colorful coleslaw. Beets are a healthy, sweet addition to any meal. Try them, nine times out of ten you going to thank me for pushing you to sample them again.

The first time doesn’t count if you were 12 or younger.

I spent the morning working with Silk. I had come across some dyed silk in hankie form.

I separated the layers and drafted them.

The spinning went quite well and I found myself getting a rhythm. I now have quite a bit on the spool. I like how the color intensified.

Next I need to decide what to ply it with….silk, merino, cotton?? I’ll sample some up later this week and see what I like best.

I came home from guild with a bag of llama in this beautiful chestnut brown color. It will need a lot of attention to get it spinnable.

I’ve never spun this raw fiber before. I’m curious how it handles. I’ll let you know.

When you move to a new city, there’s all this annoying stuff you have to take care of: get a

When you move to a new city, there’s all this annoying stuff you have to take care of: get a driver’s license, register your car, find a new hair stylist, and (dread) find a new doctor.

Here’s the thing: I LOVED my doctor in Virginia. It took me nearly five years to do the adult thing and find a primary care physician, but once I did, I loved her. She was perfectly suited to me, an older woman with gentle manners and a keen perception of people. She quickly sized me up as the type who likes to know why my body operates the way it does (bingo) and who likes to be <del>a control freak</del> proactive about my health care. We talked about long-term care, preventive care, my diet, my sleeping habits, changes in my life, how I was handling them. She was everything – primary care meant that she was ingrained in all aspects of my care, from flu shots to mental health.

Oh, Dr. Hall. Couldn’t you have come with me to California?

Today, I’m heading to my new doctor to establish care. And as with all new doctor-patient relationships, I had to fill out twenty-five pages (okay, thirteen) of questions about my medical history and current state of health.

I’m a freak, so I can’t help but think of these as tests rather than mere questionnaires.

Overall, I feel I’m pretty healthy. I exercise semi-regularly, I eat right, I drink lots of water, I sleep pretty well, and slowly but surely I’m learning to cope with stress rather than letting it fight its way out of my body by burning a hole in my stomach.

But it never fails: when I fill out these surveys, I feel like I come up short. Yes, I eat right, and yes, I sleep well, but I also drink between 0-1 alcoholic beverages per night. Additionally, I drink 1-2 cups of coffee, with sugar, and with cream, each day.

I always want to write a paragraph explaining myself in the margins. “Yes, I drink two cups of coffee (sometimes three, if I’m at a coffee shop), but I’m a writer, and we really love coffee, and tea is fine, but I really prefer coffee.”

“Yes, I consume between 0-1 glasses of wine, but I cook each night, and a glass of wine tastes so delicious with dinner.”

And then I start getting mad at the questions they don’t ask – how much water do you drink per day? How much do you cook? How many servings of fruit/vegetables do you consume daily?

At the end of the thirteen pages, my handwriting had gone from being neat and clearly legible to being swoopy, messy, a clear sign that I knew I was failing the test and I no longer cared.

I’m like Judd Nelson from The Breakfast Club. But, you know, mad about fiber. More detention! | Pic from hollywood.com

When you write about food, health necessarily always factors in. Food is the way I communicate with the world around me. When something doesn’t feel right in my life, I usually believe that changing my diet in some way will fix it. I believe that a way to stay healthy is to prepare your own food, to exercise control over what enters your body. I derive power and confidence from cooking.

But there is an ever-present fear: is my work with food harmful to me? Am I being balanced enough? Do my jeans feel tight? Am I being good to my heart? Is there enough diversity in my diet? Am I caring for my wife and meeting her needs as well as my own?

And as I thought about the amount of fiber I get from my homemade granola, and my weekly trips to the farmer’s market for fresh local produce, and the water I sip on throughout the day, and the ways I try to avoid overly-processed, chemically-saturated, nutritionally-compromised foods, I realized that I wasn’t mad at the doctor’s survey: I was mad at the system.

I was mad at the pressure to make food that is both healthy and delicious. I was mad that, in the world of food writing, food must not only be successful, but also must photograph well. I was mad that I don’t possess the time, equipment, or savvy to photograph food well.

I was mad that my recipes are never my own. I was mad that I can’t fake enthusiasm and affection for things like buckwheat, bran, and sprouts.

When you work with food – cooking it, eating it, writing about it – your life revolves around it. And that’s okay. I wouldn’t have it any other way. But the pressure to create food and food writing that is new and healthy and gorgeous and adorable and unique can become too much. And at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if it meets a doctor’s standards, or if it earns you more followers on Twitter. It matters if you like it. It matters if it feeds your soul and your stomach, and the souls and stomachs of the ones you love.

Fist pump. | Pic from tumblr

So I’ll take that survey to the doctor, and I’ll look him in the eye without flinching and claim my 0-1 alcoholic drinks per day, my 1-2 coffees with cream AND sugar. Because those things feed my soul too. And because I’m not perfect. And I don’t actually have to be.

Yup. Tis true. Leftover soap in your yarn, fiber or finished wool pieces can break down the fibers. But there is an easy, inexpensive way to counteract this. Vinegar! Of course, it’s the next best thing to duct tape, right?

After washing your fiber, soak it in a bowl of water with a splash of vinegar to neutralize the soap. Lemon juice works great too and smells a bit better.

Happy fibering!

“Pink” by Lori B. Goodman- cell made of kozo paper.

“It is said that pink is initially a calming color but that too much exposure creates anxiety.” – Lori Goodman.

“One of the most interesting examples of color effects is Baker-Miller Pink – R:255, G:145, B:175. Also known as “Drunk tank pink,” this color has been used to calm violent prisoners in jails.”

“Dr. Alexander Schauss, Ph.D., director of the American Institute for Biosocial Research in Tacoma Washington, was the first to report the suppression of angry, antagonistic, and anxiety ridden behavior among prisoners: “Even if a person tries to be angry or aggressive in the presence of pink, he can’t. The heart muscles can’t race fast enough. It’s a tranquilizing color that saps your energy. Even the color-blind are tranquilized by pink rooms.” In spite of these powerful effects, there is substantial evidence that these reactions are short term. Once the body returns to a state of equilibrium, a prisoner may regress to an even more agitated state.”

A pink cell, without an inhabitant. The feminine quality of paper sculpture is evident, even if you were to ignore the gender of most paper (and other fibre) artists. Delicate, ephemeral, decidedly organic- a skin, a body. A tent, a shelter. A space to hold us, to comfort us, calm us, drain us, placate us. There is anxiety here, and it feels like the same type of panic that comes from being unwillingly sedated.

A few months ago I went to Limantour Beach with my dear friend Bree and her beautiful son Leo.

Leo and Grey had a great time chasing the waves and flying kites.

That day I collected some dried sea kelp, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but it was pretty neat and here is what I ended up with.

Once again, all the wool is from Fibershed. I just love how all the wool is either the natural color or dyed with plants from the Bay Area. The colors in this project really reflect the colors you see at the beach. Of course there is the kelp which came from the ocean, the beige of the sand, the blue of the ocean and the sky, the dark brown of the driftwood and the green of seaweed. This piece is currently hanging on my living room wall. It’s a little hard to see it with the light coming in from the window.

I love using things I find in nature in my weavings, it challenges me to think differently about how I weave. I want to highlight the nontraditional items without taking away from the actual weaving or the yarn that I am using. This project is a good example of that. I think the yarn is so beautiful that it speaks for itself and the kelp adds interest without taking away from the yarn.

I have more kelp and I am hoping to use it in a larger project in the future!

There was a time in my life when I was not a stay at home mom and during that time I ran farmers

There was a time in my life when I was not a stay at home mom and during that time I ran farmers’ markets. I loved that job. I loved a lot of the people I worked with, I loved visiting farms, I loved being around lots of fresh food and trying new things, I loved feeling a connection to the earth and where our food comes from. I grew up in Michigan and we mostly shopped at a grocery store and it wasn’t until I was in my late teens and early twenties that I really started to think about food and where it came from. I was pretty horrified at how animals and humans were treated in the growing of our food. This realization has led me on a path that has made me think a lot about where things that we consume come from. Wool is often seen as a nice material that comes from happy sheep that graze on land and in the summer their wool needs to be sheared, no harm. Well, the wool industry, as most industries is not really like that. I won’t really go into it, but it is something that I think about. I have mentioned the fibershed project many times in past posts, so when I visit some place new I try and find out about local fiber and how the animals are treated. When I was in Michigan in the winter I went to Zeilinger’s Millwhere they spin fiber from all over the country. They didn’t have a huge selection of yarn, but they did have some interesting local yarn.

It was difficult to capture the unique color of this yarn, but I love the color and texture of this yarn.

The pictures taken outdoors give a much better glimpse of the purple and reds in this yarn. I am really looking forward to using this on a larger scale and with colors that are more complementary in hopes of drawing out some of the undertones.

Well, I have finally settled into my new home and am weaving again. We moved to Tempe, AZ about a month ago and it has taken some time to get unpacked and find a rhythm.

Also, there has been a lot of swimming.

Until a month ago I had never been to the desert, I had no idea what to expect and so far I am not disappointed. Yes, it is hot, but strangely it doesn’t feel as hot as one would think.

I haven’t made much progress on new work, but I will continue to write about the other weavings I have completed. I am currently taking two weaving classes. One class is a four harness loom class, yeah, I’ll get back to you on what that means. The other is a Navajo weaving class. It is a huge challenge for me. It isn’t that the technique is hard necessarily, it is that it is very structured. I have three weeks left of each course and I will try and write a couple posts about each.

Here we go!

Generators can run on several fuel sources including natural gas, diesel, liquid propane (LP), and g

Generators can run on several fuel sources including natural gas, diesel, liquid propane (LP), and gasoline. Lattice Communications offers natural gas, diesel, and LP generators due to their unique benefits, and by offering these three options, we ensure that your needs are met. It is important to research the advantages of each type of generator in order to make an educated decision on which is best for your company. Keeping that in mind, we have gathered that information here to make your decision easier.

For example, let’s start with the popular diesel generators. Diesel generators offer reliability, durability and fuel-efficiency. Those are only a few of the many advantages to purchasing diesel generators over gasoline generators. Diesel is more efficient, cost-effective, and durable than gasoline engines. They use glow plugs rather than spark plugs, ensuring reliability. Diesel fuel is also safer than gasoline making it less likely to ignite and explode. You can use synthetic fuels in a diesel generator, such as non-petroleum based bio-fuels, easier than you can in other generators. They also emit less carbon monoxide than gasoline generators, making them compliant with EPA emissions standards. Thus, if you are looking for a cheaper, safer generator, diesel is your best option.

Another possibility is a liquid propane (LP) generator. LP generators are also emission-compliant. They allow for clean burning with low carbon monoxide emissions, making them less toxic than gasoline counterparts. LP generators offer engine noise levels that are quieter than other used standby generators and they provide more energy per unit than natural gas generators. The use of liquid propane reduces foreign reliance on fuels and is cheaper than regular fuel. If you are searching for a generator that is safer for the environment and practical for heavy duty applications, LP generators are for you.

Last but not least, natural gas generators are budget-friendly, reliable, and safe for the environment. They have a dependable and renewable fuel source since they are powered by existing natural gas lines. Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel, above diesel and propane, and is non-toxic if inhaled in small amounts. Natural gas generators are inexpensive to purchase and maintain, making them an ideal choice for those working with a budget. Another advantage to natural gas generators is they do not produce a strong odor like other generators. Ultimately, natural gas generators are the low-cost, simple answer to your power needs.

Overall, Lattice offers diesel, LP, and natural gas generators because they are safer and more efficient than gasoline generators. All three options are great for a multitude of projects. Lattice is here to help you decide which generator is best for you.

Top Advantages of Each

Natural Gas Generator
1) Most Inexpensive

2) Most Environmentally Friendly
