I saw on television the thousands of Norwegians with torches who cheered the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the U.S. President Barack Obama. Rarely has seen a popular demonstration in Oslo as numerous as this one , and less to greet an American president. But again, this time in Norway, there was again another episode of the “Obamafever” that we have seen in USA and in other countries.

If the Nobel Prize Committee in Norway held any doubts about the wisdom of his choice, the Norwegian people responded affirmatively by going out to support Obama..

President Obama's speech was direct and bluntly said that unfortunately, sometimes war is necessary for lasting peace and cited two examples, the resistance against Hitler and against Al Qaeda. That is comparing the war against Nazism with today´s war against Al Qaeda.

But not everything is roses for Obama.

The ineffable Cuban dictator Fidel Castro has been responsible for throwing mud at Obama. The first reaction of the “Commander” when more than a month ago Obama was told about the Nobel Prize was to say that Obama did not deserve it and that they should have awarded the Prize to the President of Bolivia Evo Morales instead of Obama, because Morales has fought for the integration of Indigenous minorities at home and in Latin America.

Today Fidel Castro wrote in his column of opinion that the president Barack Obama acted “cynical” by accepting the Nobel Peace Prize knowing Obama that a few weeks later he announced his intention to continue the war in Afghanistan and send more troops. Fidel also blames Obama for almost everything that the U.S. has done in recent years, from secretly creating the Taliban, the invasion of Iraq, the global pollution, etc..

My first reaction to Castro´s statements is to comment that the true cynic here is Fidel Castro because he has no right to talk of racial minorities. Considering the Cuban census of 2002, four out of ten Cubans are mulattoes, mestizos and blacks. Well, over the 50 years that lasted the Castro dictatorship, the Communist leadership accepted only one black person among its top leaders, the former Vice President Juan Almeida, recently deceased. Almeida fought alongside Castro in the so called revolution in Cuba. And if one speaks of the lower ranks, very few blacks have been in top positions in government.

So in that sense, in spite of Castro, the U.S. were first by electing a black President.

On the other hand, Fidel is too cynical to talk about War and Peace. He has been the Dark Prince of War during the second half of the XX Century. Never been a Latin American leader so war lover and warmongering as Fidel Castro himself, in spite of his disciple Col. Hugo Chávez.

Castro was very angry with the Soviets when they decided to remove nuclear missiles from Cuba without asking him. If Castro had the last word during the missile crisis, then he would have been launched the bomb against USA. No doubt about it. So we were lucky when Kennedy and Khrushchev arranged a peace solution without asking Castro for permission.

On behalf of communist internationalism, Castro sent troops to all parts of the world, all continents, starting with South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Angola, Asia, etc. .. Thousands of Cubans have left their bones in different corners of the world. Not to mention the fifty years that Castro has been devoted to crush its own people.

So if there had been a World Prize of Evil, Fidel Castro probably would be a serious candidate to get it.
