But to be fair to the original series, it has maintained a constant quality with each release, however will its BIG cousin manage to equal that standard? Short answer, no. Let’s be honest, football isn’t the most complicated sport in the world, so questions have to be raised when it’s simplified further, that’s in essence is what FIFA Street 3 is, imagine playing football with friends, jumpers for goalposts, kicking the ball against walls and attempting those difficult tricks, that’s the premise for Pro Street, but better, in skills that is.

FIFA Street 3 handles like most football games available, pass, shoot and tackle are all there in one form or another, however what differs it from other football titles is the inclusion of the skill button that links to a skill meter. It does as the names suggest, pressing the ‘Y’ button will cause the player in control to perform a vast assortment of twists, turns and flicks, all impressive. Use it in a move and then finish it with a successful shot then the meter fills in blue, of course if the move isn’t finished with a successful shot the meter will start to fade. But there is a bit more to it than that, fill in the meter enough and a ‘Game Breaker’ is gained, the ‘Game Breaker’, which fans of NBA Street will be familiar with, acts as a über-mode where shots become more powerful and accurate. Although all this mode seems to do is serve to make a simple concept even easier. It’s Streets main feature that is also in biggest downfall, the addition of the skill button takes all the fun from figuring out and performing all the tricks and special moves, pressing one button just isn’t a challenge. As a result matches tend to descend into a two-button farce, ‘Y’ to build up skill and ‘B’ to shoot, and it doesn’t take too long before the controls have been mastered, for a game that centres on skills there’s not much skill involved.”

Link to review

Fifa is moving. Take heed to the streets!!!

A lot of views on this game have been rather filled with prejudice regarding the looks of this game. Therefore ultimately giving the game a miss. But coming from someone who’s not only not much of a football fan. But not much of a football GAME fan. To those who give this game a miss. If anything they are missing out.

What makes this game what it is, is its complete simplicity. How they’ve managed to turn the long loading times, the complicated details of rules, tactics and team skills into a simple game that can be started up and played through in less than 10 minutes.

Playing one of the annual Fifa’s maybe be what the Fifa fans have known and loved for a long time, but to a lot of people, playing long over winded games, with the need for tactics and concentrated play can just get plain boring. After playing Fifa I only ever was having fun on the game in a 4 player local match with a bunch of mates. What Fifa Street 3 gives you, is the fun from Fifa’s 4 player locals whether your playing on your own or not.

Fifa Street 3 isn’t intended to be one of those sit down and hammer through kind of games, this is the kind of video game that you fire up with a few mates and a couple of drinks before you go out, or even just for the night.

The types of game vary from only a quick match style play, or something more involved like choosing certain teams, maybe your favorite player. Getting into a game is extremely easy, the menus and game types are set out so you can instantly get into playing. All these can be customized. Each game type can be altered whether it be game time or the requirements for winning. These could vary from normal goals, to only headers and volleys being counted and so on.

Playing on the ‘pitch’ so to speak is also a lot more interesting, your given only 6 players and the areas you play are a lot smaller. The rule book has been completely scrapped with only corners and goal kicks really staying in play.

The controls of the game are really easy and simple to pick up compared to the normal Fifa games. Each button has a certain pass move, or if you’d like to show off, pressing the Y button or wiggling the right analogue stick around performs skills there’s no aiming your shots other then charging how hard you kick it, which is only determined by how long you hold the shoot button for. As well as this, your rewarded for showing off, you gain points which fill up a bar on your screen, when fully charged, you can use a power called Gamebreaker, this greatly improves your skills, your ability to keep/gain possession of the ball and your shots, however you only get a limited amount of time, and if the opposite team score a goal whilst your in GB mode, its ended.

If you think you’ve mastered to ability to show off and perform good moves in the parks, you can try yourself at the Fifa Challenges, where you chose a team of footballers and take on new teams to unlock. You must beat all their challenges for them to become yours, and as you play on you unlock more teams to play off against, unlocking new teams with new players or even un-dusting some of the older greats people might have forgotten over the years.

Amidst the rather short set-list EA trax provides the songs are all of a popular culture but from groups not as heard of as you hear on the radio, occasionally throughout the game you’ll hear some of your players call out to each other, or sometimes insult the other players in a playful manner.

Though notablely not as clean and as realistic as Fifa’s annual counterpart, the games cartoony and comedic sense to the game really does amp up the fun the game has to offer. The fact that the designers have clearly chosen to mock the players themselves in the character traits and visual appearance really shows the relaxed kind of gaming style that the developers were going for.

As well as the characters, the area’s you play in are also less of a serious tone but still really nice to look at. They’ve also included a feature from Ea’s Def Jam Icon where parts of the scenery move with the music. This has no real effect on gameplay like it did with Icon and is also on a much smaller scale I.E. Just one or 2 items in the level, not the whole place.

Though the achievements being way too easy to collect by just playing through, becoming an easy achievement game may be shooting itself in the foot., however the people who really enjoy it, and have friends whether they know a lot about the game or not, complete novices can approach the game and pick it up and play it. Leaving the games life span to as many drunken (or sober) hours you and your friends can get out of it. And believe me, that’s quite a lot. The online play however isn’t as life adding as it may have hoped. Its simply either ranked or unranked with the occasional ability to set the match type to Headers or volleys or something among the choices. A lot like just playing in the single player or the challenges.

Sadly this game has been shunned by many fans of the Fifa games as being too silly or not looking good enough. What people need to do is to just play the game and realize the game is great for what it is. Not only a solid and fun single player, but a great and interesting party game with your friends and family. If its enough to turn me into a Fifa fan, then its definitely worth a shot.

Get in the back garden with their brothers and sisters and play soccer, show off, get the skills that they need to be the best player in the next match that they play.

It was with a slight smile that I saw this video of young players in Brazil doing what can only be described as rather sensational “homework”.

But yours and my players don’t need to be this good. Simple kicking the ball against a wall and trying to use both feet would be excellent for starters. Keepy uppies in the back garden with just themselves and a ball would be brilliant.

Then again I can’t help looking back at this video and what everyone would think if my team was doing this like the boys from Brazil…

Army of Two (played on: Xbox 360): A decent co-op game at first, but as the game went along, and nothing new happened, it became redundant.

Call of Duty: World at War (played on: Xbox 360): Just can’t get back into the WWII scene. Been there, done that, Pacific or otherwise. Bring on Call of Duty: Nam already.

Castle Crashers (played on: Xbox 360): A great Xbox Live experience the first bunch of times through, but a complete version of this game, with tons of maps to battle through, would have been much more ideal to anyone looking to level their characters up.

The Club (played on: Xbox 360): The least common denominator of shooters. “Let’s go kill a bunch of people in a warehouse for no reason whatsoever!” No thanks.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot (played on: Xbox 360): A first person game that asks for more than shooting, and while the puzzle portions are a bit of fun, and the atmosphere is creepy, the replayability and combat are lacking too much to warrant a purchase.

Devil May Cry 4 (played on: Xbox 360): A great installment into one of the great on-going action series. Dante returns halfway through the game, but the real star is Nero (Virgil’s son/clone?). Non-stop monster battling fun in this great next-gen sequel.

Fable 2 (played on: Xbox 360): If you like a game holding your hand through everything, and only having to tap the A button anytime your character is supposed to be doing something different, then this game is for you!

Facebreaker (played on: Xbox 360): What didn’t everyone learn from Ready 2 Rumble boxing? Boxing games built towards the arcade and not simulation equals fail… Unless it’s Punchout!

Fallout 3 (played on: Xbox 360): Experiencing Fallout 3 for the first time this year was a lot like experiencing No Country For Old Men in theaters for the first time last year. Few experiences in my life standout as more enjoyable. Fallout 3 is everything I could want in a post apocalyptic shooter/rpg.

Far Cry 2 (played on: Xbox 360): Cliche’, Cliche’, unbalanced gunfight, take medicine, drive forever. Rinse. Repeat.

FIFA Street 3 (played on: Xbox 360): Street games just don’t have the longevity of regular sports games because of the lack of players in the games, and no franchise features. FIFA Street 3 has gameplay at a pretty fun level, now to load up on the roster and features.

Jman and Friends debate the existence of Gold Flamethrowers

Gears of War 2 (played on: Xbox 360): An upgraded campaign, an online mode that doesn’t involve playing against a team of cry babies, but a weakened online versus. It’s hard to call Gears of War 2 a downgrade on the first Gears, but the ridiculousness in EPIC removing the stun on people holding their chainsaw in an attacking position, has made online versus broken at best. Still a fun game, but hardly the GOTY candidate I was hoping for.

Geometry Wars: Retro evoled 2 (played on: Xbox 360): The sequel to possibly the most addictive game on the XBLA. Sorely lacking in Online multiplayer, and hard to warrant a purchase for anyone who already owns the original. The added game modes are merely just dressed up training missions for the real game (Evolved).

Grand Theft Auto IV (played on: Xbox 360): This game stepped the GTA free roaming up with no loading different areas of the map, rag doll physics, and cab services. The lack of weapons, different kinds of vehicles, and doing the same missions over and over keeps this game from being perfect, but it’s still leaps and bounds ahead of games like Saints Row 2 (which after viewing at length, I avoided a playthru of).

Guitar Hero: World Tour (played on: Xbox 360): Activision further robs Harmonix of all the greatness it creates. There are a good number of bands on here that I enjoy, that Rock Band doesn’t have (The Mars Volta!), but the presentation here is too dull to keep me coming back.

Left 4 Dead (played on: Xbox 360): Zombies everywhere! I can’t think of a shooter that lived up to the hype better than Valve’s Left 4 Dead. It brought everything it promised (Director A.I., Online multiplayer fun, tons of zombies to kill), which is more than I can say for pretty much any other game this year. If you like a quick pace with your shooting, look no further.

Lego Batman (played on: Xbox 360): A fine installment in the LEGO series, but still not a great game. These games are as face value as they come, and while I love the Batman license more than most any other, this game still didn’t do it for me. A lot of characters in this one to play as, but since they all feel pretty much the same, they’re more like re-skins. Play if you enjoy the Lego series, avoid otherwise.

MLB 08: The Show (played on: PS3): The best baseball game to come out in ages. Next step is getting the Road to the Show mode online. If they did that, MLB 09: The Show could be a system seller for Sony.

Madden NFL 09 (played on: Xbox 360): See: Last decade of Madden games…

Mario Kart WII (played on: Wii): Mario Kart proves to be one of the greatest video gaming series of all time again by re-inventing the wheel, so to speak. Possibly the only game on the Wii that I truly enjoy besides Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii is an upgrade in the franchise. The implementation of the Wheel controller is perfect for the system and series.

Mirror’s Edge (played on: Xbox 360): Free running the game. If that interests you, that’s cool, but I found nothing redeemable about it. The action stinks, there aren’t enough colors I feel like a lot of the time, and don’t even try getting into the story.

Jman checks on Salcido’s victim

NHL 09 (played on: Xbox 360): NHL 08 + Be a Pro Mode + Stick lifting + way “crunchier” checking animations + EASHL = The best sports game ever released… By far.

Ninja Gaiden 2 (played on: Xbox 360): Some of the least fun you’ll ever have partaking in Boss battles. Ninja Gaiden brings a good bit of fun through the platforming and fighting off other ninja, but when it comes down to the Boss Fights, instead of being fun like DMC 4, they’re quite tedious. Not a better game than Ninja Gaiden for the original Xbox.

PixelJunk Monsters (played on: PS3): The sleeper of 08. Released in late January, this game is the only reason I could ever understand for owning a PS3. If you enjoy a good game of Tower Defense, this game is just for you. The only console TD game I’ve ever played (still haven’t tried Lock’s Quest on DS), and I hope this leads to more releases in the genre.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (played on: Xbox 360): Rainbow Six: Vegas with a sprint button, and a sweet leveling system. An upgrade for sure, but nothing worth an extra 60 dollars.

Rock Band 2 (played on: Xbox 360): Practically the exact same game as far as in song play goes. The new music store option is pretty sweet, and makes purchasing DLC a lot clearer (no more sitting in the XBL Marketplace waiting for the sidebar to scroll up so you can see the name of the band whose song you’re looking at). The ability to port over the majority of Rock Band’s songs makes this game a pretty perfect sequel.

Soul Caliber IV (played on: Xbox 360): I’ve never enjoyed games about character wielding dull swords, axes, and the like, and Soul Caliber IV is no different. If I’m going to play a sword fighting game it’ll start with Bushido and end with Blade.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (played on: Xbox 360): This has the same problem as Soul Caliber IV to me, a dull Lightsaber is not a Lightsaber at all, and taking more than one strike to down an enemy goon makes these some dull ass Lightsabers. The story is kind of cool if you are still down with ignoring George Lucas-sized plot holes, and wielding to force to smash TIE Fighters into each other rules, but that’s about it.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (played on: Xbox 360): I eagerly awaited this one, and was not let down by the results. I was mad that you can only play the demo with another person, but a demo isn’t really needed when it comes to this classic series. The gameplay is great, but the XBOX 360 remote still blows when it comes to fighting games, so getting lucky and finding an arcade stick would greatly improve gameplay.

Too Human (played on: Xbox 360): Silicon Knights can sue Epic Games all they want, and blame the Unreal Engine for this game’s failures, but none of it takes away from the fact that this game isn’t good. Some people can look past Too Human’s flaws like those who enjoyed Two Worlds last year, but like that, it’s a lost cause. Fallout 3 came along and showed everyone how Action/RPG’s are to be done, but this game probably stole sixty bucks from a lot of people.

That’s it as far as I can tell. I missed out on some big games due to not owning a Wii, PS3, PSP, or PS2. Hopefully next year I can double the amount of this list, but we’ll see. Maybe I’ll get Gamefly or something like that. Be back with GNS’s, the Gaming Never Sleeps 08 awards, within the week.

A few months ago, IchLugeBullets was doing around twenty hours of commuting a week, and as such read every copy of Edge, Games TM and Retro Gamer that were put onto the market for around four months. Whilst not giving us any real insight into how to review video games, it did at least let us know that the bar for gaming journalism is embarrassingly low, and so we couldn’t really be hurting ourselves by knocking out a 300 word critique every now and then. Therefore, we at ILB proudly present to you the first in an irregular series of “reviews of mobile phone games we spent £5 in a moment of boredom because the Victoria Line didn’t run after 10pm for five months”.

Word around the campfire is that, after a mere 12 years of trailing behind drastically, FIFA has wrested the football video game crown from Pro Evolution Soccer. We’re unable to weigh in on this debate, though, as we’re not going to get a next generation console until we claim one as a free gift with our mobile phone contract (and even then it’ll be a PS3 solely because we want to be able to build up a 1,000 song SingStar catalogue).

However, we can talk about the least important runt of the FIFA Franchise, and how it adapts to the always fantastically playable world of mobile phone video games. Some previous history we have with EA Sports goodies on our Sony Ericsson W880i: FIFA Soccer Manager (game vastly underrated Eugenio Corini as a player and tactics had no impact on scores, deleted after 20 minutes despite being on a five hour train journey) and Tiger Woods Golf 2008 (game had no instructions, spent around five minutes trying to tee off with the putter before deleting it). Good work all round.

The concept of FIFA Street itself, as far as I can make out, is that professional footballers from around the world have taken a short break from gang raping glamour models to engage in a freestyle skills competition, as if they were American or something. Your character isn’t a footballer, but is for some reason allowed to play in the tournament. Except his car’s broken down. Oh no, nightmare. However, if you play some of the selected superstars at a series of mini-games, they’ll give you parts for your car. So you can then go and play them later on at the tournament with a car that works. Instead of, I dunno, asking them for a lift.

What this basically results in is a long string of button bashing mini-games that you’d probably waste 90 seconds on if they were sent round in flash form in an office e-mail round robin, but all feel massively inconsequential when you’ve coughed up £5 for the privilege of “chip the ball into the dustbin from 20 yards, win an exhaust pipe”. Especially when after the end of each game you’re given a top ten list of footballers who have, theoretically, also played the same mini-games as you, so you can see how you stand up against them. Landon Donovan is more skilled at curling free kicks around street signs than you; Stephen Pressley is infinitely superior at tackling lamp posts from behind. That sort of stuff. I have no idea what happens after the first level because I have ADHD.

Also, the fuck is up with that image at the top? Nobody appears in cartoon form in the game itself, which is a shame for “dude from Police Squad” Peter Crouch or the one on the left who appears to be a product of them being unable to decide whether to put Gattuso or Rooney on the cover, so just combining them into one. Although good work on realising Ronaldinho already looks like a cartoon character so there’s no need to exaggerate his features. And, anyway, isn’t this entire review just an excuse to post this?:
