December 19th, 2009, Boxers Kelly Pavlik Vs. Miguel Espino, met for the World Middleweight Championship at Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, OH. It turned out that it was December 20th by the time the fight got started and Pavlik defeated Espino in round 5.

WBC/WBO Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik (35-1, 31 KO’s) record speaks for itself at http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=15844&cat=boxer, defeating some of the best know boxers Pavlik won again!

2007-05-19: Defeated highly-touted and top-ranked Edison Miranda by a 7th Round TKO in a WBC Middleweight Title Eliminator.

2007-09-29: Defeated World Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor by a 7th Round TKO for the WBC, WBO, and The Ring Middleweight Titles. He also won the Linear World Middleweight Championship.

2008-02-16: Won a Unanimous Decision victory in his much-anticipated rematch with Taylor at a catch weight of 166 pounds.

Pavlik’s last fight in February, 2009 was also held in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio giving him a decided home ring advantage over Miguel Ángel Espiño, of North Hollywood, California, United States. You might remember Espiño as a contestant on the NBC boxing reality television show The Contender. Peter Manfredo Jr. defeated Espino who’s record is at 20-2-1, 9 KO’s.

Manfredo was previously stripped of the IBU Light Middleweight Title March 31, 2003, for failure to defend, although that certainly has not curtailed his boxing career. Manfredo slammed Ronald Weaver in a match held Martin’s Valley Mansion, Cockeysville, Maryland, United States on November 5, 2009, knocking him down in the first round and going on to win.

Youngstown, Ohio is familiar with having things stripped from it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youngstown,_Ohio#cite_ref-24 The dignity of being once titled a murder capital of the U.S. along with Gary, Indiana the title has been removed and the city and police have mitigated the crime spree. At one point, Youngstown held the indignity of one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation when the steel mills shut down. It was Pavlik’s obligation now, to defend his title or have it stripped that brought this fight to Youngstown this Saturday night.

The fight mentality of the people of Youngstown is; that fighting for everything you’ve got is mandatory, and that includes a mandatory fight by Pavlik.

“We were supposed to fight Paul Williams on December 5th. The hand still wasn’t 100%. We asked him for another month to get ready, but he still took the fight (with Martinez) on December 5th. We weren’t looking to fight until the end of January or early February, and then the next thing you know, the WBO and the WBC said, Kelly you guys have to fight. You have to, or we’re stripping you of your title on the 19th. Usually we go eight weeks for a training camp. Now, it’s only five weeks,” Pavlik explained.http://www.fightnews.com/?p=32669#more-32669

“Medically, it was tough,” Pavlik said. “Just when we thought we had it, something else came up. Then after surgery, it turns into MRSA and gets worse and worse. Every time we thought we had it beat, there was a reaction. But the hand feels great now. We’re ready to go.” reported Associated Press via http://www.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/2009-12-08-1983809512_x.htm.

Go they did on the last card around midnight. The fight promoted by Bob Arum was hardly a sell out with less than half of the arena filled. Turns out the facility would not accept cash for tickets nor would they participate with Ticketmaster resulting in a blackout of pay-for-view for area bars. About 25% of the population lives below the poverty line. Ironically enough, Pavlik owns a bar in the Youngstown area and his own place could not show his fight.

Whether you saw it or not, which we did on pay per view, Pavlik successfully defended his title and gave his hometown an early Christmas present- victory!

Pavlik, 27, will now turn his attention to Paul Williams, whom he was supposed to fight on 3 October. His hand infection originally caused the fight to be postponed until 5 December, and it was then cancelled when Pavlik realised his left hand was still injured. American Williams decided to fight Sergio Martinez on that date instead, winning on points. Pavlik said Williams is now the priority, but if another deal cannot be reached, he will turn his attentions to WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm according to http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/8423079.stm.

And we return, once again, to Fight Night. Or, if you really wanna be a dick about it, Fight Early M

And we return, once again, to Fight Night. Or, if you really wanna be a dick about it, Fight Early Morning since it’s after midnight as I’m writing this. Asshole.

You have no idea how pumped I am to be writing this. Now, this battle took place on Halloween, so in addition to the fact that this battle has been in the works for a while, there is also the natural buildup that occurs when it’s kept under lock and key since then. I won’t show you the videos of them hyping this up and talking shit to each other beforehand, because, as a rule, those are always painfully obnoxious. Except for this one, which is kind of funny.

Heading into this, I expected T-Rex to be a medium sized underdog. I almost said slight underdog just because its a phrase everyone’s accustomed to hearing and it rolls off the tongue, but I don’t play to anyone’s expectations. I play below them. So ya, T-Rex was a decent underdog. A solid underdog. An average underdog.

But could he pull it out? (The battle, not his penis.)

QUICK SIDE NOTE: I don’t know what the deal is, but youtube has been running shitty for the last week or so, so if you want to see the battle on a page that loads better and actually has better quality video, go here. Other than that, for the sake of embedding, I will still insert the youtube videos in this post.

ROUND ONE

T-Rex: 8

Math: 7

Three Pointers: None

After Round One, T-Rex opens an early, though small, lead. Although this round had some halfway decent lines (there wasn’t any point where I didn’t feel like the next line couldn’t put points on the board) this is kind of a low scoring round for a battle of this caliber, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the two start opening things up in the next round. As for that, we’ll see if T-Rex can continue to score with some consistency. Although he doesn’t really score as many 2’s as Math does, he does have a faster flow, allowing him to get more lines off. Math, on the other hand, has the greater chance at going big with a 3 or so, which gives him some gamebreaking ability.

ROUND TWO

T-Rex: 6

Math: 9

Three Pointers: None

A disappointing round from T-Rex to begin with. This is the second time in a row he’s bitched about the fact that Math is headhunting Mook at the same time as he’s battling T-Rex (and who can blame the man…if you can pull of that multitasking, then good for him), and then IMMEDIATELY AFTER HE WHINES ABOUT IT, he uses the NEXT LINE to talk about how tight he is with Mook. HUH? Not only that, but T-Rex ends at least a solid 10 seconds before the round ends, and acts as if it’s no big deal that he just ran out of shit to say. Was his last line good? Yes, but not 10 seconds of silence good. Math, on the other hand, pulled out some but not all of the stops, and basically shit on every physical attribute T-Rex has, always a solid game plan. Getting personal will get you 2 pointers, and how can you NOT make fun of someone who looks like a middle schooler with puberty weight gain and says they’ll kill the shit out of you? (See? Not even I could resist). I AM still waiting on a three pointer though.

ROUND THREE

T-Rex: 7

Math: 11

Three Pointers:

“By the way…what the FUCK is that shit on the side of your face?
Is it a bump? Is it a tumor, that won’t go away?
Can it talk? Does it talk to you? Well what does it say?
Right now it’s probly like ‘Rex don’t let him talk about me like that
Fight back…Say something that ain’t real, that’s what you nice at!
We supposed to be boys, it’s time for you to ride
You know if you got a problem, I’m always by your side” – Math

Needing a comeback, T-Rex ends up spitting just another average verse…actually exactly average since he scored 21 through 3 rounds, while Math pulls out ALL the stops, including a three pointer about an apparently visible growth on the side of T-Rex’s face. Apparently, this guy is the least physically gifted person in the world, because his mere existence has supplied Math dozens of lines about how ridiculous he looks.

FINAL SCORE

MATH – 27

T-REX – 21

In a solid beating, Math takes this one 27 to 21…and the thing is, he had a couple unnecessary interludes where he really didn’t score points (including the T-Rex as Burglar plotline and the Blood on the Tims story), meaning that he kind of took it easy on T-Rex and still beat up on him. I won’t lie, T-Rex did better than I thought, but any time you can re-name the act of one’s dick getting soft as a verb named after your opponent? Pretty damn funny.

Random Awesome video time:

We’ve been quite well……quiet lately. Exam season and real work commitments keeps both of us sadly preoccupied pied these days. But finally this past weekend I got a chance to step out of the house for some R and R with the boys and attended a Fight Night in Noosa.

As of recent I have taken an interest in fight sports and my boy pictured above having his first amateur bout and I was ring side to capture every moment even though when he knocked his opononent out I was too busy in celebration and dishging out high fives and fist bumps to capture the moment, but there is some footage i will upload soon. Lots of mean photos after the jump!

I took over 800 shots but I have condensed them down to the ones that took my fancy, I was really digging the pee wee fighter those kids are so well trained and composed even after drawing blood they hold their cool can’t imagine I would’ve reacted the same at that age and also the different gym logos were ill very reminiscent of old school Americana which is something I’ve always loved.

The Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots met the other night in a match-up that has become one of this decade’s biggest sport rivalries. The teams did not disappoint with both star quarterbacks firing on all cylinders attempting to will their respective (not to mention, very evenly matched) teams to victory. In the end however, it may not have been the players that determined the outcome of the game. Up 34-28 with only 2:08 remaining and the ball on their own 28 yard line, Patriots coach Bill Belichek decided to go for it on 4th down. The Patriots were stopped short of the first down and turned the ball over to Peyton Manning for the 40th game winning drive of his career. Belichek’s gamble had failed. Was it worth it? Let the debate begin.

Check out the game deciding play here.

mbelbeck vs jferretti

jferretti: The media is all over Coach Belichek today for his supposedly ‘ill advised’ decision late in last night’s game. I personally don’t think it was a bad decision, but rather a calculated risk he felt was worth taking. Unfortunately his gamble did not pay off and the Pats lost the game. The Colts had been playing well offensively and I can completely understand the Pats not wanting to give the ball to Peyton Manning. Earlier Manning had orchestrated a 79 yard touchdown drive in only 2:09 seconds. Belichek simply wanted his team’s fate in his star quarterback’s hands, not the other teams’. If they made the 4th and 2, it’s simple, the ball game would have been over.

mbelbeck: Going into last night’s game the Indianapolis Colts had allowed an average of only 13.5 points per game this season. So not only did Belicheck gamble, he gambled against one of the top defences in the NFL. Was this a case of a coach who truly believed he was making the decision that would give his team the best chance to win? I highly doubt it. I think he may be suffering from a case of overconfidence and if he keeps managing the team like this it won’t be long until his players lose confidence in him.

jferretti: The Patriots defense appeared to lack confidence in the 4th quarter and Belicheck probably didn’t feel like he could depend on them to stop the “run and gun” Colts.

-Punting the ball guarantees it in Manning’s hand and a lot of teams have seen what he is capable of. He can take over a game with just a few minutes on the clock.

-In the case of the Patriots, we’re talking only two yards here with a great quarterback.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated made a comment which sparked some debate amongst colleagues:

Let’s place the odds of Brady getting two yards at 60, 65 percent. The odds of Manning going 72 yards to score a touchdown in less than two minutes … that’s maybe 35 percent.

SI Colleague: So, Peter was giving the Patriots about a 60-65 percent chance of winning the game if they went for it, and about 65 percent chance of winning if they punted. So that’s about even, right? Of course, it’s not even because the Colts did not have a 100 percent chance of winning if the Patriots failed on fourth down — not even close to 100 percent chance. As we have discussed, there was a reasonable chance that the Patriots could keep them out of the end zone. And there was also a chance that the Colts would score too quickly and the Patriots would have time to score themselves. So even though Peter compared the Belichick move to Grady Little’s Pedro Martinez follies — “I hated the call … it smacked of I’m-smarter-than-they-are hubris” — his own math suggests the Patriots’ best chance to win the game was to go for it.

mbelbeck:Under the assumptions that have been made, I agree with your argument and in your conclusion. Now, let’s take a moment to recognize that if Peter King is unable to do the math required to come to a logical conclusion (as pointed out in the article you’ve referenced), it’s pretty unlikely that the probabilities he’s pulled out of thin air are accurate or based on anything even remotely credible.

Let’s now consider some factors that might need to be considered to assess the likelihood that Peyton Manning score a touchdown from his own 28 yard line (yes, I realize this is also an assumption, but the Colts had yet to return a punt for yards all night):

1. Manning had only 2 minutes to make the drive and would need to operate with a sense of urgency (how many times have you seen an interception in the drying seconds of a game as a quarterback desperately heaves the ball down field)

2. The Colts needed to score a touchdown, anything less than the required 72 yards would have ended the game

3. The Patriots defence knew the Colts needed a touchdown and could scheme accordingly

4. In 7 possessions to that point in the game, the Colts had scored 2 touchdowns (28.5% conversion rate – less than the 35% probability suggested by Peter King). In these situations, we must also remember that Manning was not restricted by time in the way he would be with 2 minutes left in the game. In other words, we can safely assess a 25% probability of Manning converting under the circumstances as being more than generous.

5. The Patriots defence had been largely successful at stopping Manning for much of the game

An NFL statistician set the probability of a 4th and 2 conversions at 60%, so for the purposes of this argument, we’ll use that number.

Odds of a first down conversion: 60% (odds of a failure were 40%)

Odds the Colts would score from their own 28: 25%

Odds the Colts would score from the Pats 28: 75% (assumption)

40% x 75% = 30% chance the Colts would win if the Patriots went for the first down

The Patriots odds of winning were therefore, 75% if they punted and only 70% if they went for it.

jferretti: Belicheck is a proven leader and will not lose his team’s confidence over one call. When you take a team to a perfect 16-0 record one year and 4 Super Bowl appearances this decade you’re allowed a few mulligans. He had confidence in his star player and the locker room should appreciate that. “If we gain seven more inches, it’s a great call,” Brady said at his post-midnight press conference. Going into the game the Colts were 8-0 and the Patriots were 6-2. To take home field away from the Colts you have to do whatever it takes to try and win and this just backfired. If this play works out, this debate turns into one that suggests he may be the smartest football coach ever. The Patriots will win the AFC East division and we all know they’re capable of winning the AFC crown and earning another spot in the big dance. Here’s to hoping the Patriots and Colts meet again in the Conference Finals

mbelbeck: I unfortunately, disagree with this logic. To suggest the Patriots had to go for the first down because it would have secured the win is a flawed argument. By going for the first down and failing, the Patriots more or less handed the game, the conference, and a first round bye to the Indianapolis Colts. Instead of making their opponent work for the win, they gift wrapped it and placed it under the tree for Peyton Manning. I’d like to see them meet in the Conference Finals too… but now it’s going to be a much longer road for the Patriots, not because they’ve underperformed, but because their coach couldn’t make the logical decision down the stretch.

“THE LOWDOWN SHOWDOWN”

The year was 1996, a normal summer day has begun for all students. Some swimming, playing bounce pitch, kickball, or just plain old hanging out. As for Dominick Imperial and Bhavin Amin, PREPERATION! Preperation for war. These two warriors are getting ready to battle it out to settle a current conflict between these 2 juggernauts involving a young lady disagreement, and a group instigation. The young lady was no longer the focus yet not even a spectator. This mono e mono event was based on respect, respect of Bell street!

The Spectators hike towards #5 school playground where “The Lowdown Showndown” is taking place. Half of Bell street with Bhavin, and the other half of Bell street with Dominick. As they enter the battle field the crowd surrounds as the 2 stare each other down from a distance standing bold with their hands to the side, as if we were in the wild wild west.”And they’re off!” Bhavin sprinting towards Dominic “EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!” Bhavin screams. Dominick running from the other end “YYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” he cries.
Both running at each other with more terminal velocity than a 747 Jet engine. “POW!” They collide creating an explosion that triggered most car alarms and blinded many like they just stared into a solar eclipse. Everyone regains contiosnuss and the battle continues.

Bhavin (the southpaw) throws a hard left connecting to Domincks jaw. Dominick throws a jab and a fierce right cross, connecting with a 2 piece combo that sends Bhavin to the ground. Dominck mounts Bhavin as the continue to slug each other on the ground with some mediocre grappling skills. The crowd is pleased. As they continue wrestling on the ground both seem exuasted breathing heavily with their faces beat red like a fat kid that just got done tying his sneaker. Bhavin dripping sweat like a faucet, and so many veins popping out of Dominicks forehead it created an illusion of a crystal static ball as seen in Spencers.

Bhavins friends were so upset that Dominick was going to town on Bhavins face “one” of them decided to push Dominick off with Bhavin gaining the advantage to be on top. Dominick is on the ground screaming “YAA WHAT THE FUCK?!” As the diversion is created Bhavin strikes his oppenent so hard one of the veins bulging out of Dominicks head exploded, making it seem as if a mini volcoano has erupted.

The fight is broken up. Both contenders seem to have had enough. Bhavins hand is raised in the end with the crownd chanting “Boobo! Bobbo! Bobbo! Bobbo!” With Bhavin awarded the victory, Dominick is unpleased with the outcome and the interference of the spectators. With Domincks protest to the judges they agree to sign a contract for a rematch. The controversial win goes to Bhavin. TO BE CONTINUED…

From Dan Rafael, ESPN’s wonderfully competent boxing writer.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer and a mind games expert, is predicting his man will score a first-round knockout against Cotto. Roach firmly said he does not believe Cotto has recovered from the beating he took against Margarito.

“Look at his last two fights. He’s slower, he’s more methodical. He doesn’t have a trainer anymore, so he drops his left before he throws it now,” said Roach, taking a shot at Santiago, the longtime assistant who replaced Cotto’s uncle and longtime trainer, Evangelista Cotto, after uncle and nephew had a bitter falling-out a few months before the Clottey fight. “He doesn’t have anyone correcting his mistakes. He’s just slower, the physical effects of the fight. He has bad habits with no one to correct them.”

I hope not. If Cotto, indeed, is a shell of himself and gets destroyed in a round or two, Pacquiao’s legacy will become even murkier. Sure, De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto are all big names, and almost as importantly, bigger fighters, but how long will the public and the boxing media, which is radically different from any other sports media in their diligence, knowledge of the sport and passion, simply accept the lopsided results as nothing more than a testament to Pacquiao’s greatness?

On the surface, especially with Roach’s comments in mind, it doesn’t seem like Pacquiao has much to gain from this fight. If he beats up a slow and shattered Cotto, boxing fans will start to grumble about his lack of quality opponents and wonder why Pacquiao didn’t fight Shane Mosely. If he loses, the media will start to pick apart his wins against De La Hoya and Hatton. The only positive outcome possible is an entertaining, fast-paced fight, in which Cotto’s size proves to be a problem early on in the fight, leading to a lot of carnage. If Pacquiao can gut out a bigger, stronger fighter’s punches before rallying to knock him out in the later rounds, he will be universally celebrated for what he already is: a gutty, fierce competitor with what Teddy Atlas calls “tremendous heart.” Most sports fans only know the post-De La Hoya Pacquiao and therefore have only seen a vicious knock-out artist who is too fast to be hit. But Pacquiao got to the big money fights by being a tough, undersized and ferocious, the prototypical Mexican fighter, by way of the Philipines.

If he can show the greater sports world his survivor side, the way Ali did against Foreman (and the way Pacquiao did against Marquez), Pacquiao will be in the strange position of adding a dimension to his legacy that should already exist. Any other result will be just more fodder for the inevitable Mayweather showdown.

I know…that sounds completely retarded, especially given the fact that anything on their channel is a piece of shit, they play horrible music and ban music videos for ‘being too intelligent for their target audience’ (because it was satirical of hip hop music video sterotypes a la ‘What They Do’), and this travishamockery:

Yup, you guessed it, they banned that too. What a piece of shit.

ANYWAY, the one thing I guess I can allow them to continue is the ciphers they have been including in their annual awards shows. With Preemo on the wheels of steel and a mix of up and comers and living legends? Somehow, they pulled their heads out of their asses long enough to throw these together (and have done so for the last few years). Anyway, this years just came out, which I promptly watched, inspiring this post (which will be a cakewalk for me since it will mainly involve the posting of videos and just enough analysis to keep you from wondering why I even bothered).

ROUND ONE – NICKI MINAJ, BUCKSHOT, CROWN ROYAL, and JOE BUDDEN

Meager attempt at analysis:

What the hell is wrong with Nicki Minaj? She doesn’t know whether she wants to sound like a slut, a Lil Wayne clone, or a hamster that inhaled helium. Personally, I believe she is secretly all three. I’m not gonna lie, Buckshot disappointed, because he didn’t sound anything like what you might expect an old-school MC would spit, and had next to no punchlines. Now I realize he’s not a punchline rapper, but I mean that is kinda the point of a cipher like this where you have so little time and are trying to prove you’re not washed up. Whatever. Crown Royal sounded exactly like I expected him to sound given that BET declared him their Hot 16 Winner of the Year, but Joe Budden surprisingly didn’t bitch about anything and actually did better than decent, having the best verse of this cipher easily, especially with his SICK ASS FINISHING LINE.

ROUND TWO – WALE, NIPSEY HUSSLE, GSAN, and KRS-1

Meager attempt at analysis:

I’m not gonna lie, for the most part Wale’s verse was pretty boring except for this AWESOME FUCKIN LINE:

“I’m in the Black Yukon, know what the ‘ell I mean?”

“I’m in the Black UCONN, know what the El-Amin?”

BAM. AWESOMENESS.

College Greatness, NBA (europe) Balla

Other than that, Nipsey Hussle was a bore, GSAN was unintentionally hilarious…well, let me explain.

Regardless of whether this sounds fucked up or not, I laughed during his verse. This is the second year in a row BET has had a foreign rapper come and spit on the cipher, which is not a problem, it just results in unintentionally funny things, like when all the people in the background don’t know when to yell “OHHHHH” and just do it at the end of the verse, or when GSAN starts looking at people when he’s spitting his verse and they have NO CLUE what he’s saying about them. It’s like a mix of Dylan from Chappelle’s Making The Band when he’s in the studio and the Barbershop Freestyle from the White People Can’t Dance sketch (I would have included links but copyrights suck). Also, he has some lines like this:

“I’m entering every spot, even when I don’t wear a tie”

Finally, KRS-1 ends up having the best verse, mainly because he appears to be the only one who is actually freestyling. All in all, a subpar second round.

ROUND THREE – MOS DEF, BLACK THOUGHT, and EMINEM

Meager attempt at analysis:

None needed. You already know this is going to be NASTY. I’m not even that much of an Eminem fan compared to others I know, and he murdered the FUCK out of this.

“Used to bomb ya like Saddam but now that I’m a little calmer

I’m a fuckin cross between Osama, Dahmer, Obama, and Dalai Lama”

SERIOUSLY?

Also, as a little bonus, I will add these two from previous years since I didn’t cover either of them when they came out:

ACE HOOD, JUELZ SANTANA, FABOLOUS, and JADAKISS (2008)

AKA the Mixtape Lover’s Wet Dream. Ace Hood manages not to royally fuck anything up, Juelz actually comes the hardest I’ve ever heard from him, Fabolous has some funny ass one liners, and then Jadakiss comes in for the kill.

STYLES P, PAPOOSE, and LUPE FIASCO (2007)

Needless to say, Lupe dominates this.

One of my favorite ciphers, however, is not from big name stars like the ones above. This heatrock is straight from a relatively unknown group, Die Prinzen:

You’re Welcome.

Great News for fight fans in Georgia! You’ll now be able to catch the great MMA action at Wild Bills without having to deal with the exorbitant fees charged by Ticketmaster.

But how much money could you save?

Consider this: on a $25 General Admission ticket to Wild Bills Fight Night 23, Ticketmaster will hit you up for $10.95 in fees. Yes. That’s a 43% markup. How many beers can you get for $10.95? I’d guess at least two.

BattlePass’s fees on the $100 VIP table tickets are $10. No surprise order processing fees at the end either. Our total fees on a $100 ticket are less than Ticketmaster’s on a $25 ticket.

Anyway, if you’re interested in catching no less than 10 great fights, the chance to meet Wanderlei “the Axe Murderer” Silva, and of course, the *ahem* “scenery” at Wild Bills, we encourage you to buy beers, not fees. GET TICKETS TO WILD BILLS FIGHT NIGHT 23 AT BATTLEPASS.COM.

Oh, and in case you missed it – you could also hang with the Axe Murderer at Hooters on October 29 and get some free MMA schwag (including the chance to get a Wanderlei-signed axe). Yeah, we have tickets to that too.

My looord! I’ve been trying demos or fiddling with web games for probably six weeks straight.

My looord! I’ve been trying demos or fiddling with web games for probably six weeks straight. Next week, I’ll likely be able to get back to being thoughtful about games. Probably I’ll try to determine whether my demo-playing experiences can be culled for any insight as to what makes a given demo great. Below, you’ll find my thoughts on the final five demos I had yet to play.

Numero uno being Worms. It certainly lays on the charm. Those little guys are pretty darn cute, and their voicework is just HOPElessly adorable. Problem is, I don’t have the patience for them — the game’s relatively slow-moving. But I downloaded this one to get the whole experience more than anything else, so…mission accomplished.

“NaNaaa, na na na na na No-Na na na na NOna naaa.” God but I’ve missed Katamari Damacy. Still, Katamari Forever would have to be hiding a lot of tricks up its sleeve to get me thinking about purchasing something new right now. Then again, this cel-shaded art style looks bangin’. Was there a “Prince Bounce” in the last game? Doesn’t seem to be adding much if no. But wherever it is I’ve been rolling definitely made wayyy more sense as an actual PLACE than practically everything I remember in Damacy, which is a welcome change. Also, the water mechanic (wherein your katamari acts as a sponge) is promising. Maybe there’s more here than met my eye initially…

On to some TMNT. I’d forgotten how Krang lives in Andre the Giant’s weightlifting belt. Anyway. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled looks great, but the characters feel like balloon animals. Which probably wouldn’t be so bad if it were just the grunts. But my avatar — something about him suggests he could just up and blow away. Maybe it’s a Rafael problem? Nope; same feeling with Donatello. Definitely preferred my memories of this one.

Never considered myself a big boxing fan, but I have seen When We Were Kings probably like five times now. Haven’t played a single Fight Night title, though. The demo for Fight Night Round 4 has one fantastic introduction — there’s a voice-overed feature breakdown that I really appreciate. Also, game demos with required tutorials have a leg up in my book. I’m really diggin’ these controls; they remind me of Skate’s sim-y feel, but require less precision…the perfect combination, in my opinion. Alright. Time to dig in. And win the crap out of my first fight! Has this one dropped in price yet? If so, I’d definitely consider buying.

They probably didn’t need to mess with Ghostbusters, but what the hey, right? The Columbia Pictures trappings during start-up kind of freak me out a little bit. That copyright-infringing music really jazzes me up, anyway — I just can’t help it. My PKE Meter is pretty satisfying to use, but that green the screen gets bathed is isn’t a treat to look at. Hrm. Anyway. Not much to say about this one, folks. Glad there was a demo; I definitely had some fun with it. But this particular license being adapted as a video game just doesn’t appeal to me for some reason. It’s too loyal to the material, maybe? I wish Starbreeze had done it.

Whew. Finally through the stack that had piled up while I was occupied with house stuff. Still have plenty of painting to do, but not so much that it’d prohibit my downloading the new Fallout 3 DLC next week…

I know a couple of the last fight nights have been close battles or low scoring ones, so I figured it was about time we brought out Fight Night: The Bloodbath Edition, where we can show some people getting just what they deserve: being put in their place. Historically speaking, the Murda Mook vs. Young Hot battle was the biggest bloodbath on record, but considering I already aired that one, you won’t find it in this post.

If you’re unfamiliar with my Fight Night format, scamper back here.

Other than that, let’s step in the ring.

Honorable Mention Bloodbath

MATH -10

B BENZ -3

THREE POINTERS -None; If Math’s first line had been funny instead of just filler while he made fun of B Benz’s lisp, it would have been a 3, but the way he did it was only a 2.

Even though I can only find this one round, you kind of get the idea…once Math made fun of B Benz’s lisp you pretty much knew this one was over.

Third Place Bloodbath

MATH – 15

NEMS -2

THREE POINTERS -None

Now I know Math got two rounds compared to Nems’ one, and that might account for the score discrepancy. There’s also something in most sports called the mercy rule, and that’s what the hell happened here. They gave Nems a chance to come back in OT, but after Math’s verse about all the ways Nems should kill himself because he’s just that horrible, it was a wrap.

Second Place Bloodbath

(SKIP AHEAD TO 5 MINS)

(ROUND ONE)

SERIUS JONES -12

JIN -5

THREE POINTERS -

“Said you broke, that’s why you wanna come back and battle over here

But you been wack your whole career;

Ain’t there 2 billion people over in China? You can’t even go platinum over there” – Serius Jones

(ROUND TWO)

SERIUS JONES – 8

JIN -5

THREE POINTERS – None

(ROUND THREE)

SERIUS JONES -9

JIN -8

THREE POINTERS – None

(Now I have no clue why, but the judges decided to go to sudden death. Oh well, that just gives Serius Jones more time to wax Jin)

SERIUS JONES -13

JIN -3

THREE POINTERS -

“Why do muthafuckas always wanna plead ‘No Contest’ when they gettin slayed?

See you talkin about freestyle, nigga the objective is gettin paid

So you know what, you wanna see some freestyle dudes?

I’ma show you what they gonna say tomorrow on MTV news

See tomorrow they be like ‘Serius Jones from Jersey is officially a soldier,

And Jin from Ruff Ryder’s career is officially over” – Serius Jones

This makes the final score Serius Jones – 42, Jin – 21. Yea, he doubled him. I think that qualifies as a blood bath. Realistically, there was no reason for it to go to OT, but now that I think about it Fight Klub (when it used to be on) would always go to OT just to try to build up tension even in bloodbaths like this. Now, alot of these bloodbaths have been the case of mismatched opponents. Now, Jin is not necessarily a slouch, but my number one bloodbath gets the nod simply because it occurred between two “professional” rappers. Now I know alot of these battle rappers are making money off of it, but when two signed artists go head to head and this happens…well…I’ll just let you watch.

First Place Bloodbath

CASSIDY – 22

FREEWAY – 7

THREE POINTERS -

“Yo when I get hard wit rhymes I shine like lip gloss

You pissed off cuz your dick small so the condom slips off” – Cassidy

Now, at first glance that three pointer might not look that great (but that’s if you’re a real stickler, I think it looks sick as is), but when Cassidy says it the way he does, you can pretty much kiss Freeway goodbye. Yea, it seemed impressive when Serius Jones doubled Jin, but as of right now Cassidy is TRIPLING Freeway. Let’s go to the next part to see if Freeway can come back (spoiler…HE DOESN’T)

CASSIDY -21

FREEWAY -4

THREE POINTERS -

“Put on a beat” – Freeway (+3 for Cassidy)

This is pretty much one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. Cassidy demolishes Freeway until he is inches short of tears. As soon as Freeway starts crying about wanting to spit to a beat, the battle was over. Actually, forget that. This battle was over before it began. This brings the final score to:

Cassidy – 43

Freeway – 11

Cassidy is a single point away from quadrupling a “professional” rapper. Anyone else think that’s worthy of first place on our Bloodbath Edition? That’s what I thought.
