Como muchas personas, me preocupo de tener mi software y drivers actualizados. El problema viene cuando (como yo) tienes muchos programas instalados, ya que es realmente un engorro tener que comprobar manualmente si hay nuevas versiones de nuestros programas.

Para ello yo utilizo Filehippo Update Checker, que es un pequeño programa que revista el software instalado y que lo compara con las últimas versiones aparecidas en Filehippo (ejemplo).

Hay que decir que Filehippo es una buena página, pero no tiene tantos programas disponibles como Softonic o Softpedia, pero si tiene los más frecuentes, que es precisamente lo que yo necesito.

De Filehippo me gusta que en la página principal listen las últimas versiones de los programas más utilizados clasificados por categoría, de tal manera que no tenemos que utilizar el buscador.

Prima di tutto scarichiamo l’ultima versione da QUI!

Durante l’installazione consiglio di scegliere i seguenti parametri:

Così facendo non installeremo la Toolbar di Yahoo, il software non ricercherà automaticamente gli aggiornamenti e sarà visibile solamente nel menù contestuale del cestino non andando a piazzarsi con le icone sul desktop o nel menu start (d’altronde vogliamo tenere in ordine il computer giusto?)

Avviamolo con un click destro sul cestino:

Sulla sinistra troviamo diverse icone ecco a cosa servono:

• Pulizia: da questo menù possiamo avviare l’eliminazione dei file inutili che si sono accumulati nel tempo. Nella scheda “Windows” possiamo trovare diverse sezioni:

Internet Explorer: Selezionate tutto (Tranne i Cookie se volete conservarli)

Esplora Risorse: Anche qui spuntate tutto.

Sistema: non spuntate “Collegamenti Menù Start” e “Collegamenti Desktop” altrimenti, come potrete immaginare, vi fa sparire i collegamenti più utilizzati nel Menù Start e quelli del Desktop.

Avanzate: attivate “Vecchi Dati Prefetch” e se avete bisogno di spazio potete anche spuntare “Disinstallatori aggiornamenti di WinUpdate” in questo modo non potrete più disinstallare gli aggiornamenti che avete installato.

Nella scheda “Applicazioni” invece la scelta è solo vostra perché il suo contenuto dipende dai software installati sul sistema, resta il fatto che CCleaner non va ad intaccare file importanti per il funzionamento ma al massimo elimina i file temporanei delle varie applicazioni.

• Registro: Spuntate tutto, cliccate su Trova Problemi e dopo riparate. Se volete potete anche fare un Backup del registro. Questa procedura elimina le voci di registro non più utilizzate ,non abbiate paura,  rendendolo più leggero e performante.

• Strumenti: La prima area permette di Disinstallare i programmi oppure personalizzarne il nome (avrà effetto solo in Ccleaner e nel Disinstallatore di Windows). L’area “Avvio” serve per vedere i programmi in esecuzione automatica e in evenienza permette di eliminarli o di bloccarli temporaneamente. “Ripristino Sistema” ci permette di gestire i vari punti di ripristino.

• Opzioni: Questo software offre un buon numero di Opzioni utili: per esempio andando nell’area “Cookie” possiamo aggiungere alla whitelist i cookie che CCleaner non deve eliminare (per esempio quelli di login dei vari forum e siti internet). Nelle aree “Personalizzate” e “Esclusioni” i più esigenti potranno selezionare cartelle aggiuntive dove effettuare la pulizia o le cartelle da escludere.

• Dati di Prefetch: Windows crea una porzione di dati Prefetch sul disco fisso che sono immediatamente disponibili al sistema all’avvio. Questi dati sono utilizzati per velocizzare l’avvio di windows. Nel tempo però molti di essi diventano vecchi e accumulandosi causano l’effetto contrario rallentando l’avvio del sistema.

I use an application called “CCleaner” daily on my P/C and here is the description:

“CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. This product also informs the user when new updates are available and today when I updated this product, I decided to check for other “freeware” downloads at “FileHippo.com”, which is the site where the “CCleaner” update file is downloaded from.

When I arrived at the “FileHippo” main page I noticed at the top right of the window was a promotion “Download our FREE Update Checker NEW”, “and s Scan your P/C for the latest software updates”.

This caught my interest because I thought that most major application software would inform the user that there is an update available if the version of software they are using is out of date.  After installing and running “Updater Checker” I found that this was not true at all.  What this does is it scans your P/C and produces a list of all the application software that is out of date to a window.  Then you can select from the list which applications you wish to update to the most recent version by merely clicking on the down arrow. I was surprised to find three Google products I use on the list, which I went ahead and updated.  Of course my list also had “Explorer 8” and because of the fiasco I had a few days ago with Explorer 8, I did not choose that update.  After updating several selections I also found my P/C to be running faster, which was also a surprise, but it could also be because I was now using Firefox as my browser.

I invite you to check out these two applications because I have been using “CCleaner” for about three years without any problems and now I will continue to use the “Update Cleaner” to keep my P/C applications up to date.

I often find myself installing software for a specific purpose (testing, maintenance, etc.) and not using it regularly, which means it’s probably outdated when I need to use it again.  Sometimes it’s a game that is still being developed (like Frets on Fire, a free, great Guitar Hero style game for your PC) that gets updates pretty often.  When I go to use it after a while, I have to take the time to update it to the latest release before I can use it, which is kind of a pain.

Fortunately, there are a couple of programs out there that minimize the hassle of updating software.  While they don’t automatically update the programs that are installed on your machine, they make it easier for you to do it when you have some free time.  Let’s take a look at a couple of them.

FileHippo

The first is FileHippo.com’s Update Checker, which comes in two versions.  One is installed and runs automatically in the background, the other is a standalone version.  If you’re the type who just wants to be told when there are new versions available, go ahead and install it and let it run in the background.  If you’re worried about another background process taking up resources and don’t mind running it yourself, I’d recommend the standalone version.

Once it’s done running, a window is opened in your default browser with information about what programs need updating.  You’re presented with a list of installed software and version, along with what new version is available.  Each entry has a download link with it that changes to let you know what you’ve already upgraded.  All the files are hosted on their servers so there’s no hunting down every program from the publisher, which makes for easy updating.

AppSnap

The other program that I often use is AppSnap (official blog).  According to their website, 

AppSnap is an application that simplifies installation of software. It automatically figures out the latest version, downloads the installer and then installs the software in one seamless step. AppSnap is primarily designed for Windows which does not have any decent package manager such as APT and RPM as in the Linux world.

This one is a great way to find new software as well as updating the programs you already have installed.  In fact, AppSnap is how I found Frets on Fire (see above).  This program presents you with a long list of programs that can be filtered by type or status.  Once there, you can easily add, remove, or upgrade programs from one central window.  Since this is installed on your computer, you should click the “Update” button to make sure the database is the latest.  From there, it’s a snap (pun intended) to select what you want to install and let the program do its thing.
