Dit aangrijpende drama heeft de kwaliteit om de kijker vanaf het begin af aan te boeien. Niet dankzij een overload aan informatie, nee juist de vele dingen die niet gezegd worden maakt de kijker nieuwsgierig naar hoe het verhaal zich ontwikkeld. Een merkwaardige vriendschap is waar de film om draait, en dat gesitueerd in een zeer realistische omgeving. Dit leidt tot een mooi,boeiend, en niet al te zwaar verhaal dat de kijker niet vraagt te oordelen maar gewoon te kijken.

Conclusie: mooie originele film, tegen een achtergrond die bijdraagt aan een realistische kijk op Afrika.

Ook prima thuis te bekijken

Walau film UP udah rilis sejak bulan Juli 2009 (indonesia), tapi baru kemarin dapat DVDnya maklum hidup di kota kecil nggak bisa nonton di bioskop. Film buatan Pixar ini emang lucu, menarik dan sarat pelajaran hidup yang berharga. Film ini berkisah tentang perjalanan Carl Fredricksen mengejar impiannya, melihat kehidupan liar (the lost world) di America Selatan.

By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Jestem rychle po re-obejrzeniu “Boogie Nights” (P.T. Andersona). Świetny film, który z przymrużeniem oka przybliża widzowi branżę filmów porno w latach 70-tych. Ale nie jest to dokument typu “Inside Deep Throat” (który tłumaczy socjologicznie zjawiska popularności “gatunku” w tamtych latach), to zgrabna fabuła z interesującymi kreacjami aktorskimi (Marh Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore) i doskonała dbałość o szczegóły (której brakuje w rodzimej produkcji filmowej, a tak mogłoby być pięknie w filmach typu “Ile waży Koń Trojański?”).

Ale, ale… o czym ja tu! Mark Wahlberg, no właśnie. Pamiętacie jak ten – dziś już uznany i szanowany aktor – jako młodzian biegał po scenie i tworzył “biały hip-hop”, który przez purystów gatunku był odrzucany i raczej sarkastycznie traktowany, ale przez popkulturę wielbiony? Pamiętacie jak Mark Wahlberg zwał się Marky Mark i tworzył na początku lat 90-tych pop-rapowe pogadanki? Sprzedawał dużo, jego duo z panem Prince Ital Joe (mimo wybitnie quasi-reggae-pop-rapowego charakteru) okupowało pierwsze miejsca list przebojów po obu stronach oceanu.

To jeden z jego klipów, który znalazłem w przepastnych archiwach YouTube! Młodsi nie pamiętają, jak Marky Mark tą piosenką stawiał pomnik naszemu(!) pięściarzowi, Dariuszowi Michalczewskiemu (w teledysku, do obejrzenia).

Dzisiaj, kiedy nieśmiało mówi się o spadku popularności rapu/hip-hopu (zgrabnie o tym pisze Mariusz Herma w “Przekroju” nr 46/17.11.09), warto przypomnieć sobie jego korzenie! Na blogu Bartka Chacińskiego (http://chacinski.wordpress.com/) znajdziecie klip Sugarhill Gang z kawałkiem “Raper’s Delight” (uważany za jeden z pierwszych gadanych numerów). Może kończy się pewna epoka w muzyce, która nieśmiało wchodziła do naszej świadomości już od końca lat 70., skradała się i ukrywała w latach 80., by eksplodować w 90., na początku jako domena “niekolorowa” – później jako królestwo czarnych z Eminemem jako wyjątkiem. Oczywiście, w ogóle nie mam zamiaru wchodzić w polemikę typu “co jest prawdziwym rapem”, “kto się sprzedał”, “to przecież hip-hopolo”. Nie mam zamiaru dissować z rodzimymi tuzami sceny, nigdy nie wdziałem szerokich spodni. Jako obserwator “z zewnątrz”, przypominam sobie niemal z sentymentem pewne zjawiska, które dzisiaj zdecydowanie śmieszą!

Pamiętacie MC Hammera z jego samplowanym “U Can’t Touch This”? Nie możecie nie pamiętać! Toż to hit był. A pamiętacie Vanilla Ice z jego samplowanym “Ice Ice Baby”? Ten pierwszy posłużył się motywem z utworu Ricka Jamesa “Super Freak”, ten drugi (do końca zaprzeczał) uszczknął nieco z “Under Pressure” Queen+David Bowie. Wszystkie te nagrania, w dobie internetu, można natychmiast odszukać i cieszyć się nimi. To już archiwalia. Dzisiaj 10 lat w muzyce, to dynamiczna epoka!

W każdym razie Vanilla Ice był białym gniewnym mc, który “za bardzo się starał”! Był takim “one hit wonder“, który po “Ice Ice Baby” nie powtórzył już sukcesu (później nagrał “Hard To Swallow” pod okiem Rossa Robinsona i brzmiał jak Korn!).

Pośród tych wszystkich uroczych panów, był jeszcze niejaki Dee Dee Ramone! Tak, ten z Ramones. On też w pewnym okresie swojej podupadającej kariery, postanowił nagrać rapowy krążek. Jak postanowił – tak i zrobił. Pod koniec lat 80. powstała więc płyta, która przez wielu tytułowana jest dzisiaj “najgorszą płytą świata”. To “Standing In The Spotlight” sygnowane pseudonimem Dee Dee King! Ten niechlubny wyczyn chyba zniechęcił, nieżyjącego już dzisiaj muzyka – do dalszych eksperymentów.

No a potem rozpoczęła się era rapu/hip-hopu, która trwa do dziś, chociaż z tego cut & paste ostatnio widzimy tylko fade out! Warto tym samym przypomnieć sobie pewne marginalne wyczyny – opisanych wyżej panów, z sentymentu, dla zwykłej radochy. A impreza przy tej muzyce, to byłby niezły flow. Zatem zapraszam do obejrzenia/odsłuchania wczesnych ziomali, którzy “za bardzo się starali”. Tacy wcześni “wangster” - wanna be gangster!

Ich gehe gerne ins Kino – und Vampire sah ich dort schon oft. Nach Polanskis “Tanz der Vampire” mit der herrlichen Sharon Tate folgte “Dracula jagt Mini-Mädchen”. Herrlich die Szene, als Christopher Lee in ein eingefrorenes Mädchen beißen will.

Nach Bram Stoker´s Dracula 1991 (Francis Coppola) und dem “Interview mit einem Vampir”  1994 wurde es sehr ruhig um dieses Genre, mal abgesehen von “From Task till Dawn” 1994 und die Blade-Serie ab 1998.  Dracula mutierte zum Kinderfreund, war nur noch als “Vamperl” und “Der kleine Vampir” in den Kinderzimmern präsent.

Nun aber gibt es wieder Vampire auf allen Kanälen. Für mich begann der neue Vampirimus 2008 mit “I am Legend” – die vom Virus mutierten Menschen haben vampirähnliche Eigenschaften, ertragen ebenfalls keine UV-Strahlung.  Im Buchbereich begann mit Stephenie Meyers schon 2005 Twilight-Reihe (Biss zum …) . Wenn ich die Kritiken richtig verstanden habe, wollte Frau Meyers vor ungeschütztem Sex warnen. Ein HIVpositiver wird so in die Analogie mit Vampiren gesetzt??

Vor allem Frauen sind oft fasziniert von dieser anziehenden Mischung aus Eros und Thanatos. Der Vampir zieht an, ist attraktiv, erregt, steht für ungewöhnlichen Sex – aber natürlich steht er auch für Schmerz, Blut, Tod – aber möglicherweise auch für ewiges Leben und anhaltende Jugend.

Solange die Begegnung mit einem Vampir nur ein Gedankenspiel ist, kann frau bei offenem Fenster schlafen, legt vorbereitend die Kette mit dem Christus-Symbol ab und wartet auf Besuch. Der Prinz trägt schwarz. Er ist schweigsam, zielorientiert und ohne Rücksicht. Ein richtiger Mann?

Torsdag var en sånn dag for meg. Eller, ikke egentlig. Dagen var bare helt ok, etter skolen var jeg ganske sliten, jeg ville bare hjem, spise middag, slappe av utover kvelden. 

Men. Jeg hadde en avtale.

Med den fineste, med Anne fra skolen, med puben Raindogs, og med en film om Gil Scott-Heron, en fyr jeg ikke visste hvem var, men som så kul ut på filmplakaten arrangørene hadde postet på facebook.

Så jeg dro, da. Til Raindogs, for første gang. Det blir i hvert fall ikke den siste. 

Hvorfor ikke, spør du. Jo, det skal jeg si deg. Nummer én: lokalet. Lite og intimt, men likevel romslig, ettersom ingen lukkede dører skilte inne fra ute. Mørkt, med lamper som så vidt lyser opp området rundt med lune stråler. Nummer to: interiøret. Utdaterte radioer og fjernsynsapparater kombinert med fargerik kunst. Bordplater som forestiller gamle klokker. Nummer tre: Billig øl, i hvert fall før ni. 

I tillegg til alle disse suverene faktorene, viser de dokumentarfilmer hver eneste torsdag. Er ikke det suverent, så vet ikke jeg. 

Denne torsdagen handlet det altså om poeten og musikeren Gill Scott-Heron, i form av filmen Black Wax. 

Og jeg forelsket meg. Selvfølgelig i håret hans, og i skjegget, men først og fremst i poesien, i musikken, i ordene hans.

Some days, everything seems just to be right, and thursday was such a day. Or, it wasn’t, really. The day on school was just alright, i was tired, wanted to go home, just eat, relax, sleep. 

But i had an appointment. With my boyfriend, with Anne from school, with the pub Raindogs and with a movie about Gil Scott-Heron.

So i went, and i fall in love.

With the place. With Scott-Heron. Of course with his hair, but also with his poetry, music and words. It just seemed right.

Any person not living under a rock knows by now that New Moon has been released this weekend– while shattering the single day domestic box office record and the midnight screening record on Friday (per MSNBC). Evidently, 87% of the advance ticket holders were women. 87%! Consider also that the Twilight Saga was first written by a woman, followed by a female-written screenplay which was then directed by a woman (well, the first installment)– could this mean anything for women?

Over at Broadsheet, Kate Harding was wondering about this, if it could be a feminist triumph. Basically, women are showing themselves to be a major force to be reckoned with when it comes to the box office and Hollywood should take note and start making more movies that appeal to women.

Hellz yeah! Many, many, many more films should be made (written, directed, generally worked on) by women. For fuck’s sake, women only hold 19% of film jobs!  This is appalling but do I want Twilight used as a benchmark for women-made/oriented films? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

The whole saga of Twilight, besides being, in my opinion, anti-feminist, plays right into all kinds of antiquated ideas about women and what they want. Women will only go to see a movie about a love story (preferably one involving the ”romantic” notion of love at first sight). Women need men in their lives to feel complete, safe, happy. Women want the dangerous guy who will protect her and make decisions for her. Women really want to get married young and skip college. Women should (or would just be plum happy to) ditch their friends and family and any kind of life of their own to be with a man.

What about strong female characters that won’t tolerate a boyfriend who ignores her wishes? Or who don’t want to change their lives to suit their boyfriend’s? Or who don’t want to get married and have children? What about female characters who have goals and desires and interests of their own that don’t have anything to do with a guy?

Unfortunately, New Moon is demonstrating that a whole shit ton of women still want some dramatic, sweeping love story (with a vapid heroine and a super hot, controlling hero). But this is by no means defines or suits all women’s tastes, just like bromances don’t epitomize all male relationships. More women need to be involved in the film-making industry, in writing and creating projects that give voice to the varied experiences and interests of women everywhere. Vampires optional.

So, bei Freund Engin gleich zwei Videotheken-Klassiker genossen! Zunächst “Tooth & Nail”. Benzin aus = Leute werden Kannibalen, nun gut, da muß man durch. Gleich danach “Dead Heist“. Det första jag tänkte när jag läst denna artikel var vilken otroligt bra långfilm detta skulle kunna bli.  Dvärgar går in i sin sista kamp för att en gång för alla få den respekt och upprättelse de anser sig förtjänar, trots att det kan komma att kosta deras liv. Filmens huvudsakliga ingredienser och ledord är mod, stolthet, lejon, laganda och kortväxthet.

Friday, opening night, I was lined up outside the Apollo Cinema waiting with a bunch of serious Twilight fans. Let’s get something straight, I’m a fan of the books but I don’t go in for that whole t-shirt-poster-scream-your-head-off things.  The was decent, alot better than the first (which means Stewart and Pattinson weren’t unbareable to watch during the first 30 mins) but it felt very superficial. The best things about it is;  Taylor Lautner and his pack without their shirts (in retrospect Robert Pattinson should definately keep his on in future) and the one liner shorts between Jacob and every other character. The film was a good laugh but did not meet my expectation; the actors seem to make an art out of doing nothing lol, nothing really happens until the end and then, well, it ends. And then everyone groaned that it had ended (not sure why, they all read the book). I’ll continue to see the next 2 films, but I’m not expecting miracles.

Through films little seen, and a genre little known, the Margaret Mead Film Festival brings ethnography the world over to the screens of AUC.

CAIRO – Ever seen a game of Cricket played Trobriand style? The trials nomadic Tibetan Pashmina herders face sending their kids to school? The life of umbrella-makers, job-hunters, soliders and farmers in China?

From Oct. 12 until Thursday Nov. 5, The Margaret Mead Film Festival, brought to the American University in Cairo for the second time by the department of Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Egyptology, filled the screens of the new campus and Tahrir Sq. campus with images from afar.

The annual festival in New York, founded by the American Museum of Natural History, selected six programs for the MMFF’s traveling edition – including films from Australia, The Himalayas, Swaziland, China, Italy, Abkhazia, Laos, and Papua New Guinea – which AUC was granted permission to screen. The films were introduced by AUC professors and often concluded in discussions.

“The festival gives students and the community a chance to screen rare films with images they may not have the chance to see elsewhere,” grad student and festival aide Sarah Leonard said.

“I love documentaries, but I don’t get to see them often enough,” visiting student Raina Zantout, 22, said after a screening of Donagh Coleman’s Stone Pastures (2008).

Among the films screened was AUC professor Jerry Leach’s 1976 film Trobriand Cricket: An Ingenious Response to Colonialism, “one of the most bizarre anthropological films ever made,” according to the MMFF. Leach shot the film while working on a PhD at the then-developing University of Papua New Guinea.

Skeptical as to whether or not the general AUC audience would be receptive to the title – cricket being little known in Egypt or the United States, Leach said that in viewing the film, audiences would recognize that the game “just cried out as something that had to be filmed.” The solid group who turned out the to screening didn’t go away disappointed, staying around to chat with Leach about his experience of the Trobriand Islanders and the process of making the film.

“It’s a great event and I’m very happy to [have shown] my film at AUC,” he said.

However, ethnographic film remains a fairly unknown medium with students, that many would be surprised to discover.

“Documentary is a strange beast in the region,” associate professor of anthropology Mark Westmoreland, who took over organizing the event this year, said. “Here people are much more accustomed to fiction film than documentary. Part of bringing people in is an educational process, teaching people how to view and gain from these films.”

AUC grad student Yasmine Khalifa, 24, is currently taking Professor Westmoreland’s visual anthropology class to “figure out the techniques” of ethnographic film.

“[The class] is my first experience with film,” she said. “so it’s great to have the Margaret Mead Festival here. The films I saw were very interesting.”

Festival volunteer and anthropology major Sam Walton, 22, isn’t considering a career in film, but enjoyed the opportunity to screen the films and help the festival.

“It is hard to choose a favorite film from the program,” he said, “but Stone Pastures really made me think. Seeing how difficult that life was made me reconsider my own.”

For Leonard, the film festival is a way to “engage students with the medium.”

“Ethnographic films are refreshing because they aren’t typical commercial documentaries,” she said. “Documentary doesn’t have to be boring or safe. These ethnographies are experimental, on the forefront of film. Come check them out.”

Though some of the fifteen screenings drew crowds of up to sixty viewers, others remained fairly intimate. One screening of Stone Pastures drew a small but dedicated crowd of 21 viewers, like visiting student Sarah Shipley, 20, who braved the Cairo traffic from new campus to make the screening.

“I really enjoyed the film’s large panoramic shots and work with available light,” she said.

Festival organizers attributed some of the low-turnouts to the changed schedule and the distance between the new campus and the Tahrir Sq. campus. According to Leonard, attendance was generally higher on the new campus with twenty to sixty viewers to the Tahrir campus’s ten or twenty.

“Considering the swine-flu break and condensed schedule, the turnout was good,” she said. “With Tuesday classes it was hard for some students to come, even for extra credit.”

However, this is being taken into account for the festival’s future with the idea of combining screenings in a day or weekend event. According to Westmoreland, the goal of this is to include the public and engage the city with the films and dialogue offered by the MMFF.

“I feel like showing the films downtown is a great way to bring people in,” he said. “I think next year we need to think about how to do that, [whether] we should be collaborating with cultural centers or embassies. I feel like if more people knew about it, more would come.”

With the curtain dropped on this years festival, students and Cairenes will have to wait for next years line up to feast their senses on a new buffet of global images and stories told by world renowned filmmakers. Have now dipped into the first part of Kluge’s Nachricten aus der ideologischen Antike, and it’s pretty interesting. Diary entries from Eisenstein concerning his plan to film Marx’s Das Kapital are interspersed with scenes from Potemkin, random other images, and all accompanied by the great Heather O’Donnell on piano. One clearly can’t watch this film all in one go, so I’ve been interspersing it with Volker Schlöndorff’s film of Max Frisch’s Homo Faber. Faber has lost his Swiss character from the book, and become more flippant than alienated, but a young Julie Delpy (this was 2 years before even Kieslowski noticed her) gives a convincing performance as his daughter [oops, spoiler]. More on Kluge later.

For ei daff helg dette har vore. Hadde ein artig kveld på Torgloftet på fredag der Årdal FK hadde sin årlege fotballfest. Mykje folk og god stemning. God drikka fekk ein i seg også, noko eg merka godt laurdagsmorgon. Vakna med ein helvetes skallebank og den satt i godt utover dagen. Det vart med andre ord ikkje gjort så frykteleg mykje fornuftig.

Fotballen gjekk til helvete også. Torquay hadde den dagen da ballen for alt godt i verden ikkje ville i mål. Dette enda sjølvsagt med at Rotherham putta på sine 2 sjansar og ranet var utført til 20 i stil. Kan ikkje anklaga spelarane for ikkje å prøva, men det hjelpe fint lite når det ikkje blir poeng.

Vart ein skikkeleg familiemiddag i Børtnes med nydeleg biff. Det gjorde godt for ein skranten kropp Men når dei skulle begynne å sjå Skal vi danse, så var det berre å komma seg derifrå. På menyen min stod film og etter litt fundering så vart det å leiga seg Transformers – Revenge of the fallen på epletv’en. Ein heilt grei film med mykje action om ikkje noko anna.

I dag går det i klesvask til den store gullmedalje. Lyte vel hiva seg rundt å vaska kåken også, men trur ikkje eg giddar å gå i gang med det heilt enda. Sofaen fristar litt for mykje akkurat no. Burde vel fått seg ei lita treningsøkt også, men når ein ser ut på vind og regn, så blir ein ikkje så veldig inspirert
